MeetPatrick Dennis

In a period of less than two years, Patrick Denniswent from being the most winning head basketball coachin the history of the Citadel to mopping the floor at aMcDonald’s restaurant. Bad luck? Not at all – it was partof the plan!

Most of us don’t have the chance for two successfulcareers, but Patrick Dennis may be the exception. Abouttwo and a half years ago he was accepted into an eighteenmonth training program to become a McDonald’s owner. It covered everything from wiping tables to grilling bur-gers, customer service to successful business manage-ment. “That eighteen month program was like getting anMBA in how to run a restaurant and may be the best

investment I ever made.” When three stores became available in Coweta Countyhe quickly purchased them, feeling it was the right fit for him and his family.

You won’t hear Patrick saying much about hispast accomplishments (and there are many); he pre-fers instead to talk about his respect for his employ-ees and the good job they do. “I feel very blessed tohave such good workers, and I thank them every daywhen I leave the stores.” He seems to be one ofthose rare individuals who can motivate others to dotheir best. This surely comes from his twenty-eightyears of coaching as well as inspiring thousands ofboys and girls over the years at his PAT DENNISBASKETBALL CAMP in Charleston.

Pat understands that success first comes fromserving others – employees and customers. “I neverminded getting my hands dirty and I’ll do whatever ittakes to be successful.” He runs the day to day opera-tions at the three restaurants while his wife, Sherry, who has been a “huge factor in the project”, handles thebusiness details from her office. They are a winningcombination with the right attitude, and that can onlylead to a profitable business and satisfied customers!

The Dennis family now lives in Newnan and willcertainly be an asset to our community. We encourage you to drop by one of theirstores – near the Thomas Crossroads Kroger, the Lower Fayetteville Road Kroger, and at Wal-Mart – to welcome them to our beautiful county.

want to take this opportunity to introduce myself as new

owner and publisher of The Coweta Shopper. Having

been born and raised (for the most part) in Newnan, I

have gotten to know many of you over the years. I’ve been

involved in civic, community, and church activities as time per-

mitted, and my wife and I raised our family here. In 1972 I

established Joe Williams Homes, a company which has provided

new homes for hundreds of families in this area.

This is not my first venture into the world of print media. Beginning in 1959,

I was affiliated with The Decatur Daily News in Alabama. I delivered over 100 papers

each day from the seat of my bicycle, and revisited each home on Saturdays to collect.

I was the “paper boy”, earning about ten dollars a week!

Since its beginning in 1989, millions of copies of The Shopper have been

mailed to the residents of Coweta County announcing the wares and services of mer-

chants and professionals. Earlier this year I took the opportunity to purchase The

Shopper from the retiring owner, and it is my goal to make it even better than ever.

Fortunately, Rusty Kuehl and Ruth Harris Doyal, who have been with The Shopper for

many years, will continue with our publication. You’ll be seeing interesting and infor-

mative articles about new businesses and products, and the owners and managers

behind the counter. We will give special recognition to

employees who go beyond what is expected to solve problems

and provide exceptional customer service. You’ll see “How

To’s”, recipes, and gardening tips as well as information on

land, homes and mortgages. But most of all, our advertisers

will tell you about their products and services and what they

can provide at a better value than their competitors.

The Coweta Shopper is direct mailed to 15,000 addresses weekly. With 3

consecutive runs, we can provide our advertisers with total market coverage in just 15

days. Whether you’re in Newnan, Sharpsburg, Senoia, Moreland, Turin, Grantville or

just out in the country, you should receive The Coweta Shopper at least once every

three weeks.

My genuine thanks go to all our loyal advertisers, and I sincerely look for-

ward to developing new relationships with many more readers and businesses. As

always, I invite your suggestions and comments in order to make The Coweta Shopper

an excellent publication.

You’ll be seeing a lot more of us now!

Two army rules:

#1. The commanding officer is always right.#2. If the commanding officer is not right, see #1.

***

A private asks a sergeant:

- Is it true that man descended from a monkey?- Yes, privates possibly were. But not sergeants.

***

Bragging about old times - Two men were boasting to eachother about their old army days.

“Why, my outfit was so well drilled,” declared one,“that when they presented arms all you could hear

was slap, slap, click.”

“Very good,” conceded the other, “but when my companypresented arms you’d just hear slap, slap, jingle.”

“What was the jingle?” asked the first. “Oh,” replied the other offhand, “just our medals.”

***

At one Army base, the annual trip to the rifle range hadbeen canceled for the second year in a row, but the semi-annual physical fitness test was still on as planned. One

soldier mused, “Does it bother anyone else that the Armydoesn’t seem to care how well we can shoot, but they are

extremely interested in how fast we can run?”

***

One airman asked another: “I hear they are dismissing Lieutenant Coolidge

from flying. Was it on the ground that he was incompetentas a pilot?”

“No, in the air,” corrected another airman.

***

Like any mother, I worried when my son joined theMarines. But later on, when I asked him how things were

going, he put my mind at ease.

“Let me put it this way, Mom,” he said. “Living with you prepared me for boot camp.”

Go on a Treasure Hunt – the High-Tech way At Line Creek Nature Area

Try a fun outdoor adventure game at Line Creek NatureArea on Saturday, May 15th from 1 – 3 p.m., led by MikeSwanson of Fayette County Parks & Recreation. Geo-caching (pronounced “geo-cashing”) is basically an out-door treasure hunt using a handheld GPS unit – similarto the type found in cars. It’s a great activity for familiesto share and helps kids learn about navigation in thenatural world.

Here’s how it works: a geocacher can place a geocache, pinpoint its location using GPS technology, then sharethe geocache's existence and location online. Cachescan include trinkets, coins or other items and some-times include a log book. Anyone with a GPS device canthen seek the geocache. Once it’s found, the geocacherlogs his name and can replace the cache item withanother of his choice and notes the find online.

With over 70 hidden caches in Peachtree City, and hun-dreds more nearby, Peachtree City and its 90-mile net-work of multi-use paths are a geocacher's paradise!

Mike Swanson, with the help of local geocachers, willgive a brief lesson and lead a demonstration hike begin-ning at 1pm at the Line Creek gazebo, weather permit-

ting. According to Mike, "you'll enjoy the hunt and theopportunity to get out in nature. This is a worldwidesport so you can find caches anywhere you go."

There’s lots of information about geocaching on theinternet: learn about the sport at www.geocaching. comand find out more about the Georgia association atwww.ggaonline.org. You’ll find that Line Creek is a pop-ular destination known for the beauty of the creek andshoals.

This event is one of a series of informative programshosted by the Trust throughout the year. Just recentlythere was a spring bird walk at another Trust preserve, the Sams Lake Sanctuary outside Fayetteville. South-ern Conservation Trust is a community land trust basedin Peachtree City that owns, manages and protects over1,300 acres of conservation property in the SouthernCrescent, including the city-owned Line and Flat CreekNature Areas.

The Trust encourages attendees to pre-register for thefree program by Friday May 14th. Call 770-486-7774 oremail [email protected] to pre-register, check for aweather cancellation or for more information. Direc-tions are available on the Trust website www.sct-landtrust.org

Help Kitty Think Inside the Box

DEAR PAW’S CORNER:Regarding the letter from areader (Frustrated inPhiladelphia) whose catwas soiling on top of her bed:

I didn’t get the impression that the person was keep-ing the cat in a cage as a matter of course, but ratherwas doing that, or considering doing it, as a result ofthe kitty relieving herself on the bed.

Therefore, I wonder if the kitty wasn’t doing thatbecause of a urinary tract infection or other healthproblem, or didn’t like the type of cat litter used, thelocation of the litter box or something else in the homethat was probably stressing her.

Just wanted to bring up these possibilities, for whatit’s worth. — Jonathan N., Mayer, Ariz.

DEAR JONATHAN: My thanks — advice and sug-gestions from my readers is always welcome andworthwhile! Frustrated in Philadelphia should cer-tainly discuss the possibility of a health issue, like aurinary tract infection, with her cat’s veterinarian, and bring her in for a complete checkup.

Litter-box location can be an issue with some cats,as can multiple cats sharing a litter box. An ownerdealing with a cat “going” in areas other than the litterbox could try placing a clean litter box over the area ofthe latest mess (after cleaning it up of course) andthen gradually move it away and back to a more desir-able location.

Cats also react to stresses we humans might notnotice or see as a stressful situation. Pay close atten-tion to a cat’s behavior, particularly when it’s exhibit-ing problem behaviors like soiling outside the litterbox, and see if it is reacting to a person, a new item inthe home or something else.
