On June 22nd, I had an opportunity to take a tour of the new

Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s new facility here in

Newnan. Our visit, which was organized by the Newnan-Coweta

Chamber of Commerce, was to introduce us to their fifth cancer

treatment hospital which will open in late July this year. The fin-

ishing touches were not yet complete, but I was quite impressed

with the modern architecture and sophisticated interior design

which gives it a comfortable, welcome feel. Although it will house

some of the most cutting-edge techniques and equipment in use

today, there’s more – much more.

CTCA’s philosophy is to “treat the whole patient, not just the cancer”, an attitude which is the

foundation of their relationship with the patient. Everything they do is purposefully designed to

make a difference in the lives of people with cancer and to give those people, and their families,

comfort, hope and encouragement, along with a high level of medical treatment. If you’ve ever

been the “customer” in a hospital, I’ll bet you know the routine. “Dr. Zorba will be here tomor-

row to look at your test results, but we won’t know what’s wrong with you until he can discuss

your case with Dr. Welby. I leave at three, but the next shift might hear something.” This was,

of course, the old way, and hopefully not

used in modern medical facilities today.

The new cancer treatment hospital will

have all caregivers involved meet with

the patient, and their families, to dis-

cuss the diagnosis, treatment and prog-

nosis in a group meeting, so everyone

can be on the same page at the same

time. Sounds like a plan to me.

But there’s more to this story than

just good medical care. In the first five

years here, CTCA will hire about 500 em-

ployees (referred to as “Stakeholders”) and generate up to five hundred million dollars of eco-

nomic activity for Coweta County. It’s also estimated that about two thirds of patients will travel

here from up to 500 miles away for treatment. That’s going to have a tremendous financial im-

pact on our community.

So, along with Piedmont Newnan Hospital, Coweta County has opened two new state of the art

hospitals in one year. I’m proud of “Coweta – County of Opportunity”! I think we all are.

Joe

Postscript: Modern technology is great, but as long as I don’t have to go down the hall in

one of those open back gowns with my fanny “open to the public”, I’ll be a happy patient!

“CTCA’s philosophy is to“treat the whole patient,

not just the cancer”, an attitude which is the

foundation of their relationship with the patient.

Brain Bleeding From Aneurysm

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend of mine, 46 years old, with a wife and two children, died of a stroke. I also heard he died of a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Are they the same? He was the picture of health and was de-voted to exercise. Could his exercise be responsible? He was almost a fa-natic about it. -- P.M.

ANSWER: A subarachnoid hemor-rhage is a special kind of stroke. It’s due to the bursting of an aneurysm on one of the brain arteries. Aneu-rysms are small, balloon-like protru-sions of a brain artery. They’re weak spots. “Subarachnoid” indicates that the artery is below one of the brain’s coverings -- the arachnoid. It’s the same place where cerebrospinal fluid circulates. A rush of a large volume of blood into this space compresses the brain and compromises its function. The increased pressure on the brain adds to the threat of death.Sometimes these weak bulges have been there from birth. In most in-stances, they arise during life. High blood pressure, smoking and exces-sive intake of alcohol contribute to their development. From 10 million to 15 million Americans have a cere-bral aneurysm. Only a small percent-age of these people die from it.At the onset of bleeding, the involved person complains of a terrible head-ache, the worst he or she has ever had. The person then becomes unre-sponsive and slips into a coma. This sort of stroke has a high fatality rate, around 50 percent. Answering your question about your friend’s devotion to exercise and its influence on his death is hard. Exer-cise did not cause the aneurysm to form. In unusual circumstances, it might have caused the aneurysm to break. Straining to lift a very heavy load while simultaneously holding the breath has been described as a possible reason for rupture of this kind of artery problem. The booklet on strokes describes the more common stroke causes and their treatment. People can or-der a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 902W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please al-low four weeks for delivery.

***Readers may write Dr. Donohue or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Volunteers for Affinis Hospice

All you need is a caring heart! Your involvement will communicate value to these patients and their families as you pro-vide companionship and a brief respite for caregiv-ers. You will not need to provide any medical or physical care to the pa-tient, just a caring heart and a listening ear. You can provide caregiver relief for 2-4 hours each week to allow the care-giver to enjoy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and talents to impact someone in their last stages of life in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-trained, equipped, and supported. Please call Lynn Yeager 678-897-3136 with inter-est or questions.

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

In a past article I had explained the definition of a ‘tort’. A tort is a private or civil wrong other than a breach of contract for which the court will provide remedy in the form of an action for damages. Today’s article discusses intentional torts.

An intentional tort is defined as a wrong perpetrated by one who in-tends to do that which the law has declared wrong. This is contrasted with ‘negligence’ in which the tortfeasor fails to exercise a degree of care in doing what is otherwise permissible.

Intentional torts include five (5) basic causes of action: 1) trespass, 2) assault, 3) battery, 4) false imprisonment, and 5) sexual harassment. Tres-pass includes trespass upon the land of another, trespass to personalty which would include the wrongful taking of a person’s property, or tres-pass by conversion which would be asserting any act of dominion over another person’s property.

Assault is defined as an intentional causing of fear or apprehension by unauthorized physical contact. Battery is a completed assault by having actual unlawful physical contact with a person.

Consent is an affirmative defense for anyone accused of any intentional tort. As a general rule, most intentional torts cannot be committed against a person who consents there to with the exception that the consent is free, not obtained by fraud, and is the action of as sound mind. An example would be one who consents to having a medical procedure by a physician could not later claim that the act constituted a battery.

If you or anyone in your family has been injured or involved in a vehicle wreck, call Stemberger & Cummins, P.C. to discuss your questions and concerns with our experts.

The majority of the roads and bridges we drive on today were built when Coweta’s population was only 50,000. Our transportation infrastructure wasn’t built for our current population of 127,000 much less our 2040 projected population of 250,000. Transportation is a key ingredient for economic development. Our community needs to start educating itself on our transportation needs so that we don’t get choked down and begin to lose jobs.

Thanks to the hard work of our County staff, our plan for the future is in place. Regardless of what happens with the TSPLOST vote on July 31, our transportation needs and our plans remain relatively constant. Our challenge as a community is to figure out how we will finance future transportation and encourage our state legislators to find ways to fund the projects.

Consider these Coweta facts: Total 20-year budget for projected transportation projects is $408 million Road maintenance costs at a minimum $8 – 10 million annually Road repaving costs average $300,000/mile with 900 miles of paved roads to maintain

Good things come to our community with improvements and infrastructure investments. What would our quality of life be without transportation improvements like the following?

o The widening of the Hwy 34 corridor to Peachtree City o The Newnan Bypass connecting Hwy 34 to Poplar Road and the new hospital o The Green Top replacement bridge o Widening of the 34 Bypass into 4 lanes o The Greison Trail roundabout

The more we grow and prosper as a community, the more we need to keep up with our transportation needs. Join us on July 9 for this important community conversation.

“Gardening Tips”Check potted plants and hanging baskets daily for the • proper moisture level.

Water early, unless using drip irrigation, to avoid evapo-• ration. Watering at night is sometimes recommended to conserve water, but this practice may lead to disease, mil-dew, fungus, etc. Drip irrigation is best because it doesn’t waste water, can be directed exactly where needed, and doesn’t evaporate quickly as spraying does.

Deadhead (remove spent blooms) and groom plants reg-• ularly to promote good sanitation and healthy plants.

When pruning plants, dip pruners in disinfectant before moving to other plants to prevent the • spread of diseases.

Pick flowers early in the morning when the sugar and moisture levels are high. Take a bucket • of water to the garden and place cut flowers in it as soon as they are gathered. Soak cut flowers in water (stems) for several hours or overnight in a cool shady location before arranging them. A little lemon-lime soda (or sugar) and a teaspoon of bleach in the water will help to feed the cut flowers and keep the water clean. Floral preservative solutions are also commercially available.

Freshly picked tomatoes should not be stored in the refrig-• erator.

Follow the manufacturer’s directions for fertilizing or use • half-strength. Don’t fertilize when the temperature is ex-tremely high. This stresses plants. Water before and after fer-tilizing during summer months to protect plants.

Wait until Fall to divide and replant or to plant new plants • and shrubs.

For a great tree, death comes as a gradual transformation. Its vitality ebbs slowly. Even when life has abandoned it entirely, it remains a majestic thing. On some hilltop a dead tree may dominate the landscape for miles around. Alone among living things, it retains its’ character and dignity after death. Plants wither; animals disintegrate, but a dead tree may be as arresting, as filled with personality in death as it is in life. Even in its’ final moments, when the massive trunk lies prone, it has moldered into a ridge covered with mosses and fungi and arrives at a fitting and noble end. It enriches and refreshes the earth. And later as part of the green and growing things, it rises again.

~ Edwin Way Teale

TRAIL FACTS

The Appalachian Trail is one of the longest, continually marked foot paths in the world. Beginning in Springer Mountain, Georgia, it covers over 2150 miles through 14 states, with its terminus at Mount Katahdin, Maine.

Known as the “A.P.”, it has been es-timated that 2-3 million people visit yearly. About 1800 people attempt to “thru-hike” each year, however, only about 1 in 4 will complete the entire trail in one long walk.

Completed in 1937, The “Trail” is a unit of the National Park System and is maintained by the Appa-lachian Trail Conservancy, along with thousands of volunteers from 31 local trail maintaining clubs.

Nature At Its Best… Scott Wilson Takes A Hike

Henry David Thoreau once said, “I think that I can-not preserve my health unless I spend time walking – sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields, absolutely free from worldly engagements”. There are few who understand this philosophy better than Newnan’s Scott Wilson. An avid hiker, Scott, with some friends, has realized his goal of walking the entire Appalachian Trail, some 1,268 miles from Georgia to Maine. He not only has a spirit of adventure, but en-joys an appreciation of the beauty, serenity and healing power of being close to nature. “A long stroll in the woods will heal anything”, says Scott.

The “Walk” was completed in 1997, having taken 18 years of vacation time from his responsibilities, but “family and business came first”. Scott also introduced several friends to hiking and many joined him on dif-ferent sections of the trail. Bill Headley went along most years and they finished the trail together. Scott’s sons Pitts and Scott, Jr. joined him several times, as well as Bill Berry, Jackie Binion, Geno Smith, Carl Wil-liams and others. “We would walk 10-14 miles each day, with the longest (and hardest) covering twenty-one miles”, Scott remembers. He enjoys Spring and Fall trips for the milder weather and has slept in a tent when the mercury would fall as low as ZERO!

Yes, a walk in the woods can be a healing balm for our bodies and our minds. But left alone, a forest will be in a constant state of life and death, regenerating it-self and becoming a new and different place each sea-son. Understanding and appreciating this, Scott took this photo of a fallen tree, promoting new life from its horizontal trunk. He also provided us with a copy of a writing by Edwin Way Teale describing this regenerat-ing miracle of nature. I believe Scott Wilson is quite in agreement with Mr. Thoreau and Mr. Teale. He un-derstands, first hand, that the mountains and forests of Appalachian Trail can provide “nature at its best”.

Publisher’s note

I have known Scott Wilson for about forty years. He has always set a good example as a father and husband, businessman and community leader. He’s given his time and talents to help make our community a bet-ter place, and his positive attitude has always been an inspiration to me. And as founder of Bank of Coweta, Scott helped build a respected financial institution which has been a source of pride in our community. Now retired, he and his wife, Billie Zane, who are life long Newnan residents, have 3 children and 5 grand-children.

Tips On SellingYour Home With Pets!

We love our pets! Pet lovers can't imagine having a complete family without our beloved Fido or Princess. Sometimes pets become the surrogate children for empty nesters. I've often heard grown children of friends remark "I've been replaced by a dog!"

However, once you decide to put your house on the market the game plan changes for everyone living there, including the pets. Although it's difficult to believe, some folks don't like pets! Can you imagine?

Seriously, some people have allergies to animals, while others may be afraid of them. Oth-ers don’t want Fido jumping on them while they are try-ing to look at the house, or don’t want cat hair on their clothes when they leave the house. The odor from the cat litter box, aquarium, ger-bil and hamster cage is not the most enticing fragrance. How do you prepare your home and staging when it is occupied by your pets, their scents, their shedding, and their items?

p Repair any pet damage prior to listing your house. Teething puppies can ruin the corners of baseboards, scratch the doors, tear the screens and rub against the walls. We begin not to see these types of flaws while we live there, but a buyer will notice right away.

p Clean! Hire a professional or do a really good DEEP CLEAN. Steam clean all carpets or replace carpet & pad and treat subfloor below the pad if there are urine stains. Wash, professionally clean or remove all area rugs to remove pet dander and odor. Remove pet hair and steam clean furniture if they have been on it.

p Keep a blanket on any/all furniture that your pet may use to cuddle up. That way, it’s easily thrown in the washing machine, right before you have a showing.

p Regularly clean the nose prints off the doors and windows. No buyer will think those cute little dog smudges are as cute as you do.

p Minimize pet accessories in the house. Remove all pet beds, toys etc. prior to home showings, including feeding bowls and food. Sometimes the food smells worse than anything.

p If possible, remove the pet during showings or if not, have a neighbor or pet sitter help out with this. Many veterinarians offer a daily pet sitting service. Leave pets outdoors or in a crate in the garage, laundry room or screened porch if removing them from the house is not an option.

p Be sure to “police” the yard for any dog “droppings”. You don’t want a buyer to step in that and then walk through your house.

p Hide the cat litter box in the spare bath tub and close shower curtain 90%. The litter box must be kept clean daily.
