The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

We live within a few hundred feet of neighbors we hardly know, and have casual friends we don’t see often enough.

This, however, does not take place in the aisles of the local grocery store. When carts meet, we seem to be “best friends” with those folks we would not usually visit. The store’s aisles put us all on a level playing field, socially and economically. But, it’s a funny thing. When your carts are going in opposite directions, you will probably meet again on almost every aisle. After about the third “crossing”, there is little left to be said, and on the fourth, you don’t even make eye contact anymore. It’s just being polite.

My wife and I usually go food shopping together, but awhile back, she gave me a list of about 15 items and where they would be. Almost finished, I left the shopping cart and walked to the other end of the store for a forgotten item, then saw my “best friend” as mentioned above. I guess I wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing. I never found the buggy containing my food and list, and had to start over. At check out I had another surprise. Although I quit drinking many years ago, I had included a package of “non alcohol” beer with my other items. The girl at the register apparently didn’t know the difference and asked to see my ID. After seeing the driv-ers license, she politely said, “thanks – you’ll be getting the senior dis-count”!

Nadine and I don’t go grocery shop-ping often enough, and when we do go, the amount spent is shocking, at best. At our store, the check out counter has a computer screen facing the customer, showing a running total of what you are purchasing. As the total amount increases, my blood pressure goes up proportionately, becoming “stroke level” at the final tally. (By the way, you know you’re an over-spender if you have to take the rear seats out of your SUV just to get the groceries in!) But to make us feel better, the employees kindly offer to take our two overloaded carts to the car. Because of a “neurological hiccup” last year, I sometimes have an unsteady gait, and my wife has trouble with her hip. So, we just thank them and say …

… “We want to take the carts ourselves. It’s the only thing between here and the car holding us up!”

Sometimes it’s better just to laugh about it than to worry about it.

JoeAs always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Here’s another car that might have been in your garage. The series of ’55 thru’ 57 Chevrolets represented a huge improvement from the old and stodgy cars seen after WWII and were leaders of the shiny, colorful, and powerful cars of a new automotive era. These cars represent one of the most coveted series of cars to restore and customize. They are also one of the most expensive to procure.

Stanley and Phyllis Sutton inherited theirs when Stanley’s brother-in-law passed away. Since he was an old car enthusiast and had had many over the years, Stanley knew the value of the car and decided to restore it. But he wanted it to be as it was when it was new, not some monster updated to today’s standards with big tires, huge chrome wheels, and a killer stereo. The way it could (might?) have been in 1955 was just fine.

That’s why it has a two-tone paint job in colors that were available at the time – Cashmere Blue and White. That’s why it has the fender skirts that were fash-ionable, no de rigor, at the time. That’s why it has the three speed automatic transmission on the column as was typical of the time. That’s why it has fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror, Oldsmobile spinner wheel covers and wide whitewalls. All were popular accessories at the time.

Being a long time car buff and hot rodder, Stanley, of course, had to person-alize his car in some way. He chose to redo the interior, but again keeping it similar to the way it came from the factory. It certainly is consistent with the conservative exterior restoration. Most hot rodders get carried away in the en-gine compartment, though. Stanly did not (well not too much anyway). Many hot rods and street rods are dipped in chrome. Accessories, brackets, and little pieces that were never chromed at the factory get the beauty treatment on many cars. Like the exterior and the interior, Stanley’s Chevy is… well, con-servative. Kind of like Stanley himself. He did have to put in a contemporary 350 cubic inch Chevy mill, however, instead of the real conservative 235 cubic inch six cylinder engine that came with the car.

Although Stanley says he spent too much on the car (don’t we all?), Phyllis is aware of the cost of the restoration, but is as happy with the results as Stanley is.

First in Area to Achieve Certificate of Additional

Qualification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine (CAQ).

To be awarded a CAQ, a surgeon must complete a rigorous process, including a review of his practice and an examination which covers the medical and musculoskeletal aspects of sports medicine offered by the American Board of Ortho-paedic Surgery (ABOS). To qualify to take the exam, an orthopedic

surgeon must show significant sports medicine experi-ence through a comprehensive analysis of his practice. Dr. Gruber’s practice at Georgia Bone and Joint is pri-marily focused on treatment of sports or activity related injuries, including knee, shoulder, and other joints, as well as adult reconstructive surgery (joint replacement) of the hip and knee. Dr. Gruber is on staff at Piedmont Newnan and Piedmont Fayette Hospitals, as well as the Summit Surgery Center. He serves as a volunteer team physician to the local sports teams at area high schools and is a member of the Summit YMCA Board. He is actively involved in medical education as a preceptor for the Mercer University Physician Assistant program and is a volunteer physician for the Coweta Samaritan Clinic. He has enjoyed providing the same level of care to athletes and non-athletes in our area for the past 17 years. Dr. Gruber’s group practice, Georgia Bone and Joint, offers a full range of orthopedic care, including sports medicine, joint replacement, workers compen-sation, foot care, and outpatient surgery.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital has kicked off an $8 million capital campaign entitled “Building on our Promise.” Campaign Chairs Jennifer and Jim Thomasson announced that approximately $5.8 million has already been pledged, including a significant gift from Newnan Hospital Inc. The new 136-bed Piedmont Newnan Hospital replacement facility is scheduled to open in May.

Several prominent local families, as well as Newnan Hospital Inc., have been integral to the hospital’s growth and development and have made major gifts. The campaign includes annual gifts and giving from employees and the hospital’s Auxiliary.

The new hospital chapel will be named in memory of the late Myrtle Arnall Mann. In the mid 1950s, Mann supported a foreign mission in Germany that eventually led to the construction of Immanuel Baptist Church in Wiesbaden. Because of Mann’s strong ties to Newnan Hospital and her steadfast belief in church missions and philanthropy, her

Piedmont Newnan Hospital Announces Capital Campaign“Building on Our Promise” campaign hopes to raise $8 million for new hospital

family felt it fitting to name the chapel Immanuel Memorial Chapel. In keeping with the hospital’s design, it will be light, open and airy, leading to a proposed healing garden.

“Thanks to the generous donation by Mrs. Mann’s family, this won’t be your typical chapel,” said Kelly Loftin, director of Philanthropy at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “We are incorporating stained glass influenced, in part, by the windows in the church in Germany. The chapel will also house custom furnishings to make this a sacred setting for healing and restoration.”

J. Littleton Glover and his family have committed funds to provide enhanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) services to Coweta County’s most critically ill newborns, who are now transported for care. The donation is a tribute to the late Doctors Howard and Nat Glover, who were among the county’s first pediatricians, as well as Glover’s father, John Littleton Glover, who began his law practice in Newnan in 1935 and for 65 years served as general counsel

to what is now the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home and Family Ministries, Inc.

“The Glover NICU will serve some of our most fragile patients and their families,” said Michael Bass, president and CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “It is truly a gift that will positively impact the future of our entire community.”

“The Coweta community has a rich history of supporting healthcare that dates back to 1919 when community leaders rallied to raise $50,000 to build Newnan Hospital,” said Bass. “By launching this capital campaign, we are asking the community, once again, to step forward and help us elevate our hospital to a place of distinction of which we will all be proud,” he concluded.

For more on how to support the Piedmont Newnan Hospital “Building on Our Promise” Capital Campaign, contact Kelly Loftin, director of Philanthropy, at [email protected] or 770-304-4147. Visit donate.piedmont.org.

Are You Attracting Flippers?Flippers are real estate investors that search the mar-

ket for low priced properties that need small inexpen-

sive repairs. They make the repairs at a low cost, put

the property back on the market and sell it, often for

a good profit.

If your house needs repairs, it may be putting buyers off and attracting flippers.

Buyers approach a property and see needed small repairs and they automatically

start thinking, “Hmmm, I wonder what else is wrong with this house” and that is not the

seed that you want to plant in a buyers mind. Small repairs says “differed mainte-

nance” to a buyer.

Are you attracting flippers by not mak-

ing the necessary repairs BEFORE list-

ing your property? If your house needs

work, selling to flippers can be a viable

option to get your house sold, but you

are not going to get the price you want.

They want to purchase at a price below

market value.

Studies show that we have more 1st time home buyers under the age of thirty

than ever before and they are willing to pay MORE for a MOVE-IN READY house.

If there is a similar house to yours down the street that doesn’t have a “honey do”

list that comes with the selling price, that is most likely the house that the buyer

will choose.

Go ahead and make these repairs before you put your house on the market. If

you can find a buyer that is willing to buy, the offer that they are going to make

will be much less than what it would have cost you to make the changes in the

first place.

There is always a “New Listing” buzz whenever a new property goes on the market

and that usually is the best time for your house to be shown and go under con-

tract. Why risk losing a buyer by having them see your property before it’s ready

to be sold? Go ahead and make the house appeal, not to flippers that will make

low ball offers, but make it appeal to the first time home buyer.

Take it from Whoa to Wow! Make it 1st time friendly.

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Last month we discussed what you should do if you are in an auto accident. Today’s article in-volves insurance claims do’s and don’ts.

Do call your agent as soon as a covered event takes place.

Do review and understand your insurance coverages. Read the coverage and exclusion sec-tions of your policy in particular.

Do take and keep detailed notes of conversations with the insurance company representative. Get names, job titles, and phone numbers of the people with whom you speak.

Do consider whether you might have insurance coverage under some other insurance policy as well. Many people have “umbrella coverage” under their homeowners policies.

Do take pictures of injuries or the damaged or destroyed vehicle.

Do be honest and forthcoming with your insurer. Failing to be candid with your insurer might invalidate your policy or cause a denial of cover-age.

Do keep all receipts of any out of pocket expenses that may have oc-curred in regard to your wreck.

Don’t give any recorded or written statements to your insurer until you are sure you understand your coverage.

Don’t automatically accept the estimate and appraisal of your losses given to you by the insurer. Research the value of your vehicle.

Don’t accept any checks that say “Final Payment” unless you are ready to do so.

Don’t ignore time limits set by your policy. Don’t forget that you have a contract with your insurer. Your insurer has a legal obligation to provide the coverage promised.

If you or anyone in your family have been involved in a vehicle wreck, please call Stemberger & Cummins, P.C..

Piedmont Newnan Hospital Receives “Grants to Green” Award

NEWNAN, Ga. (January 31, 2012)—The Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta has presented Piedmont Newnan Hospital with a $50,000 “Grants to Green” award to pipe untreated water for landscape irrigation to the hospital’s new campus.

The goal of Community Foundation grants is to give local nonprofits the oppor-tunity to build healthier work places that are energy, water and environmentally efficient. The foundation believes that increasing the cost-efficiency of operations ultimately saves money that could go toward providing more services.

The grant was used to offset the expense of laying purple, industry-standard pipe to transport non-potable water from the Coweta County Water and Sewerage Au-thority to the hospital to be used for landscape irrigation. Piedmont Newnan Hos-pital shared in the expense of running the pipe to the edge of the property, as well as from that edge to both the hospital and the new Piedmont Medical Plaza.

“As part of our plan to build green, we are seeking certification by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™,” said Ken Flynn, senior project manager for construction management at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “This is just another example of our long-term commitment to energy ef-ficiencies, environmental controls and cost savings.”

The new hospital is being built on a 105-acre campus where as much green space as possible will be preserved. Landscaping will feature drought-tolerant plants and materials, and high-tech moisture sensors will gauge the need for watering. Select areas will have roofs with growing vegetation.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital will be the tallest building in the Southwest Atlanta area. The new campus is set to open in May. To learn more about Piedmont Newnan Hospital, visit piedmontnewnan.org.

39 Oak Hill Ct., Bldg. C, Newnan, GA 30265located in Oak Hill Professional Park. Cancer Survivor Recognition

Sunday, February 19, 2012“Celebrating Cancer Survivors and Striving to Find the Cure!”

Sunday, February 19, 2012 has been proclaimed RELAY FOR LIFE SUNDAY by the Coweta County Board of Commissioners to recognize and honor Cancer Survivors countywide.

The American Cancer Society’s Coweta County – 2012 Relay for Life begins on Friday, April 27- Saturday April 28 at the Coweta County Fairgrounds on Pine Road. The Opening Ceremonies begin Friday evening at 6:00 PM. The Relay For Life Survivor Committee would like to invite members of all our churches who are Cancer Survivors and their Caregivers to participate in this wonderful event. Survivors will begin checking in at 5:00 P.M. on April 27 and will participate in the Honorary First Lap around the track at 6:00 P.M. Golf Cart transportation is available to assist with ambulation. Following these opening events, all Survivors will enjoy a wonderful feast hosted by Mt. Gilead Methodist Church.

The evening is a family event filled with entertainment, games, and the beautiful Luminary Service which begins at 9:00 P.M. A hospitality tent will be provided for Survivors and their Caregivers near the stage for the evening festivities.

Luminaries and Torches can be purchased in Honor of someone who has won their battle over Can-cer, in Memory of those who have completed their battle with Can-cer, or in Appreciation to a Care-giver. The track will be encircled with lighted candles in Luminary holders, each bearing the name of a loved one being Honored or Remembered. Team members will be reminded of those being honored or remembered as they walk for “The Cure”. Those who purchase a Luminary are invited to come out on April 27 and light their Luminary, which will burn throughout the night.

Questions about Survivor Recognition Sunday on February 19, Relay for Life, or sponsoring a church team or volunteering to assist in a support role, may be answered by contacting any of the persons listed below.
