W ith Valentine’s Day just a few days away,

I think it appropriate to share some of

what I’ve learned, through trial and

error, about this important day. Let’s call this a

“warning shot over the bow” of those unsuspect-

ing men who would otherwise run afoul of their

sweetheart this February 14th. Inasmuch as this

is written for men, I ask that our lady readers not

continue past these opening remarks. (We’re on the honor sys-

tem, you know.)

I am writing this from the point of view of a long time married man, however, similar results may be had with this current, younger genera-tion, too. Here are some important rules to follow: (1) DO NOT buy your wife or girlfriend a bar-b-que grill, vacuum, coffee pot or a piece of fur-niture. Women like shinny things with a lot of bling! (2) Don’t dare wait until the afternoon of the last day to purchase a gift. You may have a nervous breakdown in the store and end up buying a grill, vacuum or coffee pot by default. (3) Flowers, along with a nice card, will usually soften the blow of an ill-advised gift. Show her the flowers first. If done correctly, you can then announce the fishing trip or golf day you have planned with the guys for the following weekend. Don’t wait more than an hour to bring it up.

There’s one more rule which I am still trying to learn. If we treat our wives and loved ones with love, kindness and respect during the other 364 days, the gift we give on Valentines Day may not be nearly as im-portant as we thought. This is a special day for most women, so, if it’s important to my wife, it’s important to me .

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medi-um.

Blue? Pink? Neutral!Have you ever been to see a house that has a

pink bedroom for the girls and blue for the boys?

What if that house was for sale and the buyers looking at the house were interested, however

1) don’t have children the appropriate age for the “baby” colors

2) have different gender children than the seller, or

3) don’t have children at all?

They’d have to paint the walls in order to make the house livable for them. Perhaps the house for sale down the street has a more neutral color palette and is move in ready for any buyer. Guess what? Most likely, that is the one that they are going to put under contract.

Why take that risk and send your potential buyer to your competi-tion?

If you are one of the many home sellers that have “decorated” your children’s rooms and painted the walls a “special” color specifically for them, it’s time to bring out the paint supplies again. Choose a neutral color and let the “theme” of the room show through the accessories that will be moving with you.

Example 1: you have a boy that is all about Toy Story and wants everything in his room Toy Story themed. Choose a cream or tan color and let the bed spread be a solid blue, red or green, with Toy Story sheets. Then display the Woody and Buzz Light Year acces-sories to create the theme for your son.

Example 2: your daughter wants her room decorated in a Disney Princess motif. Choose a neutral paint color (not pink or pur-ple) and have a poster framed of her favorite princess. Use a few choice dolls for display and place a pink, purple or white com-forter on her bed with Disney Princess sheets.

Occasionally, I’ll have a client that has painted a mural in their child’s room. They always ask, if they need to paint over it … the an-swer is … YES! What are the chances that the buyers looking at your house are going to want monkey’s painted all over the walls?

Inform your children that this is a temporary solution and let them negotiate a new theme for the next home.

Newnan’s H.E.L.P. SPAY NEUTER CLINIC To Participate in

HSUS Spay Day™

Local Citizens Urged

To Spay or Neuter Pets

The Newnan Coweta Humane Society affiliate, H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic will participate in Spay Day™, an international campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, to promote the life-saving benefits of spay/neuter, when H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic hosts their “Beat the Heat” spay neuter campaign at their clinic in Newnan, GA.

The event, that will be conducted during the en-tire month of February, will feature even greater discounts than their regular low prices. Female dogs $70, Male dogs $60, Female cats $50 and Male cats $40 and all surgery packages include FREE Rabies and DHPP vaccines for dogs and FVRCP vaccines for cats.

As always, there is no extra charge for in heat or pregnant cats or dogs. “Spay/neuter saves pets’ lives while lessening the burden on animal shelters and taxpayers,” said LouAnn Jones, Ex-ecutive Director. “We are inviting our citizens to sponsor the spay or neuter of at least one ani-mal—their own, a friend or family member’s, or a shelter animal awaiting adoption—in honor of Spay Day™ 2011.”

This year marks the seventeenth annual Spay Day™. Since Spay Day™’s inception in 1995, it is conservatively estimated that participants have altered more than 1,518,000 animals. It has been a proud achievement of Spay Day™ participants like H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic and Newnan Coweta Humane Society and other spay/neuter programs that the number of homeless cats and dogs euthanized in the U.S. has fallen from ap-proximately 13.5 million in 1973 to fewer than four million currently.

The H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic, a 501(c)(3) organization, holds as their mission to provide a non-lethal solution to the companion animal over-population. They offer a unique blend of services at a stationary clinic, combined with an active transport program where they travel to a central point in outlying counties and bring animals with appointments to the clinic. The H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic operates as an outreach affiliate of the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society.

For more information, please visit www.NCH-Srescue.org or www.helpspayneuter.org Appoint-ments can be made by calling the clinic directly at 770-304-7911.

Interpreting Dreams

After she woke up, a woman told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me

a pearl necklace for Valentine’s day. What do you think it means?”

“You’ll know tonight” he said.

That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife.

Delighted, she opened it - to find a book entitled “The meaning of dreams”

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

A Thoughtful Valentine’s Day Gift

Jim asked his friend, Tony, whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine’s Day.

“Yes,” came the answer from Tony who was a bit of a chauvinist,

“I’ve bought her a belt and a bag.”

“That was very kind of you,” Jim added,“I hope she appreciated the thought.”

Tony smiled as he replied, “So do I, and hopefully the vacuum cleaner

will work better now.”

A Fool In Love

After a quarrel, a wife spoke to her husband, “I was a fool when I married you.”

And the husband replied, “Yes, darling, but I was in love with you,

due to which I failed to notice it”

Eugene S. hurwitz, M.D.Dr. Erinn Gardner, M.D.

To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

As the World Spins

Dear Dr. Donohue: Will you please explain vertigo? I fell asleep in a chair one evening, and when I woke, I was slightly dizzy. The next morning when I woke up and sat up, I was extremely dizzy. Everything was going back and forth. When I tried to walk, I was bouncing off the walls. The room was moving. My doctor prescribed Dramamine. I still wake up dizzy, but not as bad as the first two nights. I am 69. -- E.B.Answer: Vertigo is a hallucination that everything is moving. It’s not. What you describe fits the defini-tion. Many causes of vertigo can be traced to the inner ear, which has two important functions: hearing and balance, the orientation of our body to the things around it. That function is handled by the vestibular system of the inner ear.Sometimes a viral infection of the ear can trigger vertigo. The only way to handle it is to take a medi-cine such as you’re taking and wait for the infection to clear in about three to six weeks.Or it can come about because tiny calcium particles in the inner ear have made their way to places where they shouldn’t be. This is benign positional vertigo. When affected people move their head or change position from lying or sitting to standing, the calcium particles activate the vestibular system abnormally, and profound dizziness strikes. When you woke up and sat up, you became dizzy. You changed positions. Calcium particles activated your vestibular system.

A doctor easily can prove benign positional vertigo by provoking a dizzy spell through a series of head and body movements. He or she can coax those transplanted calcium specks back to their site of origin through another series of movements, called the Epley maneuvers. The medi-cine you mention often lessens symptoms. Antivert is another useful drug. So is scopolamine -- in its oral form, not in its patch form. I made vertigo sound like an easy diagnosis and an easy treatment; it isn’t. Many other serious conditions have to be considered by the examining doctor. The booklet on vertigo discusses this common malady in detail. To

obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please al-low four weeks for delivery.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Stand up for your schools and be counted! Vote YES to extend E-SPLOST on March 15

Candace Boothby President Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce

Coweta County has one of the best school systems in Georgia. We now boast SAT scores that are higher than the national average and well above the state

average. In addition, we prepare our graduates for the job market so that expanding and re-locating businesses can confidently expect a supply of competent work force for their future.

How fortunate we are in Coweta that we do not face the prospect of attempting to raise our school system to a more acceptable level. Keeping a lead in educational superiority is far less expensive than trying to get there. And when a large percentage of the education sales tax is raised by non-residents’ spending in our stores and restaurants, the continuation of the E-SPLOST is less expensive than raising the monies through increased property taxes.

Our high rate of growth has meant that our schools have had to absorb an increasing number of students. These students require buildings in which to learn, school buses to transport them safely and other capital expenses that ensure Coweta can continue to benefit even during high growth. The March 15 vote is entirely for capital improvements. It allows us to continue to be a superior school system with adequate and basic infrastructure requirements of a productive system.

No one likes to pay taxes but every one of us expects our 911 calls to be answered and public safety personnel to come when we are in need. We expect parks and recreation, road maintenance and other services to be provided. And if we don’t get this level of service, we will probably move to where we can.

I encourage every single voter in Coweta County that wants to stand up for our schools and our community to be counted on March 15! This is very important to our future as a top-quality county in Georgia. Please help continue this blessing by voting “YES” on March 15.

Legal Briefs:

Bill Stemberger

Chances are that sometime during your life you will be affected by the courts of Georgia, either by participating, or by the decisions made both at the trial court and the appellate court levels. Today’s article will be a brief primer on Georgia’s court system.

There are two (2) levels of courts in Georgia, trial courts and appellate courts. Each court’s jurisdiction, the power to hear and determine a case, is outlined in Georgia’ State Constitution. Trial courts are described as either limited or general jurisdiction courts. Courts of limited jurisdiction generally hear less serious cases. Municipal Courts, or city courts, hear cases that involve violations of city ordinances. Magistrate Courts, some-times known as small claims court, hear civil suits under $15,000.00, try viola-tions of county ordinances, handle bad checks, dispossessory writs, and also issue search warrants for the local law enforcement agencies. A person looking to obtain a marriage license or firearm license would go to Probate court. Pro-bate Courts also probate wills, administer estates, and in some counties handle traffic cases. Cases involving children under the age of seventeen (17) would appear in Juvenile Court. This would also include some juvenile traffic cases. State Courts hear civil cases and misdemeanor criminal cases.

The basic court with general jurisdiction for any cases involving state law is the Superior Court. Any civil or criminal case may be tried, and all felonies, serious criminal charges, must be tried in Superior Court. All domestic issues, which would include divorce, must be heard in Superior Court, along with title to land or equity matters. The Legislature has divided Georgia into 48 Superior Court Circuits and each Circuit containing from one to eight (1 to 8) counties and served by one (1) or more judges.

Finally, Georgia has two (2) Appellate Courts, the Court of Appeals of Geor-gia and the Supreme Court of Georgia. Most lower court appeals which would include Juvenile, State Court and Superior Court matters would go directly to the Georgia Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals has appellate jurisdiction over lower court cases in which the Supreme Court has no exclusive appellate jurisdiction. The Court of Appeals has twelve (12) judges broken down into four (4) panels of three (3) judges. The Supreme Court of Georgia has what is called exclusive jurisdiction power. The Supreme Court reviews cases involv-ing capital felonies (the death penalty), divorce, constitutional issues, titles to land, and wills. The Supreme Court of Georgia is also the last resort should you not succeed at the Court of Appeals level. The Georgia Supreme Court has seven (7) Justices and hear cases on a regular basis. Both Appellate Courts are set up to correct legal errors or errors of law that were made at the trial level. There are no trials held at the appellate level, instead, the judges review writ-ten records, briefs, and hear oral arguments from attorneys.

Although not all encompassing, hopefully this brief explanation of these courts will shed light on our Judicial System in Georgia.

Camellias ~ Part I

The ArmchairGardener

The ArmchairGardener

The ArmchairGardener

In the South, the most beloved winter bloom-

ing shrub would surely be the camellia. Its

blooms range in color from white to pink to red

and variagated. Camellias bloom from Septem-

ber (sasanqua) until April (japonica). Some camellias are fragrant. Mature height ranges

from 4 to 8 feet; but older specimens may reach a height of twenty feet. Camellias are

broad leaf, evergreen shrubs.

The first camel-

lia to come to the

United States was

Camellia sinensis,

the tea plant — tried

in both Savannah

and Charleston.

Middleton Place of

Charleston claims

to have the oldest

camellia japonica

dating to late 1700s.

Magnolia Gardens

in South Carolina also has a wonderful collection that began in the early 1800s. Camellias

originated in China and Japan. They were known to be in England in the early 1700s.

Camellias prefer acid soil (with organic matter) that is well-drained. Semi-shade such

as under tall trees — like pines — is best; dense shade produces more foliage and few

blooms. They are shallow-rooted and do not like competition for nutrients. Mulch pro-

tects roots and conserves moisture. Northern and eastern exposures are usually the best

locations. Do provide protection from strong winds. In extreme cold — especially a sud-

den drop in temperature — extra protection is necessary. Cover with a bed sheet or light

plastic weighted down with stones. Blooms are damaged below freezing point. Buds are

damaged below 15º and the plant may be hurt below 10º. A few new varieties bred to be

cold hardy will stand temperatures below 0º. They usually have the words Snow or Winter

in their names.

Sasanquas are more cold tolerant and can take more sun than the Camellia japonica.

Some espalier well and others may be grown as a hedge.

annual Forestry report shows tree Growth in the Black

More timber was grown than was harvested last year in Georgia, a trend that has endured for nearly four decades. According to Forest In-ventory and Analysis (FIA) data released by the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Georgia’s forested acres remained stable at 24.4 million acres in 2010. The annual FIA survey conducted by the GFC and USFS shows forested acreage change of less than two percent since 1972.

Georgia continues to have the most acres of pri-vately owned forestland in the United States. Ninety-one percent of Georgia’s forestland is held in private ownership, with the remainder held by federal, state and local government. While forest-ed acres are being lost to development in Georgia, acreage is gained annually when owners plant tim-ber on land that was previously used for pasture or row crops. FIA statistics show that since 1972, 25 percent more wood was grown in the state than

was harvested.

A relatively small but important component of Georgia’s forestland is its cypress acreage, which accounts for one percent of the state’s forested total. FIA data shows that cypress coverage actu-ally increased by nearly 8,600 acres from 1997 to 2010. The 2010 FIA data detailing all categories and trends can be viewed in its entirety at http://www.GaTrees.org/ForestManagement/ForestIn-

ventory.cfm

The forest industry has a $27.2 billion annual economic impact on Georgia, with $472 million generated by the forest industry in tax revenue for the state. Forty-four of Georgia’s 159 counties are moderately to critically dependent on the forest industry for employment and income, and more than 118,000 jobs statewide are supported by for-

estry.

The Georgia Forestry Commission provides lead-ership, service, and education in the protection and conservation of Georgia’s forest resources. Healthy, sustainable forests provide clean air, clean water, and abundant products for present and future generations. For more information about services of the Georgia Forestry Commis-

sion, visit GaTrees.org.

Noelle Masonheimer is proud to join the team at

Parks & Mottola

Hailing originally from Pennsylvania, Noelle Ma-sonheimer is now pleased to call Coweta County home, and says she looks forward to assisting clients in finding their own homes here. Masonheimer, the latest addition to the Parks & Mottola Realty team, brings years of experience in sales, plus numerous awards and accolades for top performance. She says that her own research of the area’s real estate com-munity led her to the firm.

“As much as my family loves being involved in all that Newnan and Coweta County have to offer, I don’t believe that I’ll have much difficulty convincing others that this is the right location for them,” she adds. The claim seems credible; Ma-sonheimer was named Top Listing Agent within four months of hire – and then Top Producer within 12 months – at the realty office for which she worked and was a bro-ker in North Carolina. “Frankly, a glut of inventory and dismal economy weren’t on my radar; I knew the benefits of living in Asheville first hand, so I believed in my product. I feel the same way here!”

Among the area’s most established real estate firms, Parks & Mottola specializes in residential, commercial and industrial real estate and development. Masonheim-er will work out of the firm’s offices in Newnan’s Calumet Business Park.

Been following the gold and silver market lately? Well if you have a jewelry box or lock box full of gold or a coffee can full of old coins you should be according to Ohio Valley Refinery spokesperson John Miller. “The gold and silver markets have not been this strong for over 30 years,” said Miller. Typically when the U.S. dollar is weak and the economy is flat gold and silver markets soar. “That’s good news if you are sitting on a few gold necklaces or an old class ring,” says Miller. Next week, starting Tuesday at 9am and every day next week through Saturday, the Ohio Valley Refinery will be setting up a satellite refinery right here in PeachTree City at the Hampton Inn. During their 5 day stay, anyone can bring gold, silver or platinum items and turn them in for immediate payment, explains John Miller. “Just about everybody has some amount of gold or silver just lying around collecting dust and next week anybody can sell theirs direct to our refinery. Typically, selling direct to a refinery is reserved for larger wholesale customers like jewelry stores, pawn shops, and laboratories,” says Miller. “We are changing how business is done,” he explains. “We want to do business with everybody so we took our business to the streets. Our teams visits various cities around the country hosting 5 day events allowing the general public to take advantage of our services. The turnout has been overwhelming,” says Miller. “Usually each day is busier than the previous day. It seems once people come to us and sell something, they are so amazed by what an old ring or gold coin is worth that they go home and start digging around for more and tell relatives, friends and neighbors. It’s like a feeding frenzy by the third day. People line up with everything from gold jewelry to sterling silver flatware sets to old coins. I think during this bad economy everybody can use extra money but most people say they are taking advantage of selling direct to our refinery because of the higher prices we pay.” During this special event anyone is welcome to bring all types of gold, silver and platinum to the refinery and turn it in for instant payment.
