This month is noted on my calendar as the end of my fi ft h year as owner of Th e Coweta Shopper. It seems almost like yes-terday that I decided to pursue this second career in the “Pa-
per” business. Actually it’s just a continuation of a career with about a 50-year hiatus in between, as I got my start in business delivering newspapers from the seat of my bicycle. Th ere are some similari-ties, and a few diff erences, in “delivering” the paper and “owning” the paper, but business is business and you have to do whatever it takes. Here’s how I remember those days and how they compare with what I do today today.
Back then (c. 1961) I started work right aft er I got out of school for the day. Now I start work right aft er I get out of bed. (Or about 10:00, which-ever comes fi rst) I had 100 customers, then, who expected the arrival of their newspaper on time, 7 days a week. I now deliver to 12,000 homes and businesses each week. In the old days, I was not allowed to miss a single day of work with only one accept-able excuse – a death in the family, and even then it had to be “My” death. Th at is also true today – the Shopper has not missed a deadline in 26 years. I used to throw those 100 papers from the seat of my bike. Th is time I contracted with the Unit-ed States Postal Service in order to avoid a good bit of “Pedal-ing”! But their delivery fee for just one week is more money than I would have earned in 4 years of bicycling! And back then, I had to go to most of those homes each Saturday to collect the “fi ft y-two cents” they owed me. Yet, if they didn’t pay me, I still had to pay for my papers, and the same is true today. If my advertisers don’t pay me, I still have to pay for the paper. (And the rent, and the utilities and salaries, and postage etc, etc, etc.) But, thankfully, that rarely happens, as we do business with some pretty nice folks! Th ere is one more thing, however, that hasn’t changed signifi cantly. In 1961, I made about $10.00 per week aft er expenses. Th ese days, I usually make at least that much. Usually.
I constantly hear and read that the demise of print media is close at hand, however, I will continue to try to make adjustments to our publication to keep it popular for the readers and a good value for our advertisers for as long as possible, using the same philosophy that got us started. My mission from the fi rst day was simple: Connect the citizens of our community with the products and services available here, and do so in a positive and encouraging way. But at least 99% of the success we have enjoyed is because of the talent, discipline and hard work of our team who make it all happen. And for that, I am quite thankful.

March brings St. Patrick’s Day with green everywhere in every thing. “Going Green” environmentally is in vogue. When I think green, I think trees. They give shade, cooling, wildlife habitat and beautifi cation to our personal and public landscapes.
As an extension of that thinking, our forests, both private and public, provide wildlife habitat; control of rainwater runoff and soil erosion; help to clean the air and add oxygen to the environ-ment; and provide recreation as well as renewable resources.
We all receive benefi ts from our forests: physical - exercise; mental - stress relief; emotional - connecting with nature and our inner selves; and spiritual - nature gives a sense of something larger and greater than ourselves. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “In forests we return to reason and faith.”
During the 1930’s, under FDR, natural resource conservation was largely implemented by the Civilian Conservation Corps. De-pleted forests and worn out farm lands were reclaimed and trans-formed with the planting of huge numbers of trees.
Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA is a great example of worn out farmland and forest being recreated over time into a wonderful natural and recreational area. Dunaway Gardens in Coweta County preserves forest land, wetland and historical gar-dens. Chattahoochee Bend State Park provides forests and water recreation and preservation.
Green burial is a new concept that could help to preserve for-est lands and prevent development of forests.
When reminded of green in March, think trees. Please help to protect and preserve our private and public forest lands.

Beth Dow is the owner of Home Helpers and Direct Link of GA & AL. She is a Certified Senior Advisor, Certified in Alzheimer’s Care and Geriatric Case Management. She understands firsthand what it means to be a caregiver and knows how hard it can be. Beth started Home Helpers because she wanted family caregivers to know that they didn’t have to feel alone. To submit your question, please email: [email protected]. For more information about Home Helpers and Direct Link of GA & AL, please call 678-876-5118 or email: [email protected].
BETH: Just asking this question shows that you are of sound mind. The folks that don’t need to be driving, usually do not recognize that they do not need to be driving.
First take a walk around your car. Do you see dents or scratches? If you do, this may be an indication that your driving is not up to par.
Be sure your vision is good. Have your vision checked every year. Depth perception is not as precise as we age. Be sure you are able to see what you need to see when you drive.
As we age our reaction time slows. It doesn’t matter how good of a driver you are, if your reaction time is not where it needs to be and someone pulls out in front of you, you will hit them.
One final test you can do is to have someone ride with you. Ask them to be honest about your driving. If after the drive their knuckles are white and they are holding on to the handle over the door for dear life, you probably don’t need to ask.
Just AskBethBeth Dowwith
QUESTION: “I am an independent, healthy minded 72-year-old. I am a good driver, but I don’t want to be one of those old folks that drive past when they need to. How will I know when it is time to stop driving?”

Baby Dimensions is Newnan’s ultimate place to see your baby while you are pregnant. We have an upscale, spa-like boutique that can accommodate very large parties. It is also cozy enough that if you and your husband want your ultrasound to be just the two of you, you can do that too. Baby Dimensions is able to show your baby to you in 2D, 3D, 4D and the new HD Live! We purchased a new machine recently, and we are only one of a handful of places in the state of Georgia that has this new technology. It is absolutely mind blowing at how detailed you can see the baby’s features. Stacey, our registered sonographer, will make you feel like the baby is actually interacting with you during the session. There will also be a web cam video of the entire session. It will record every-thing that goes on during the session as well as what the baby is doing on the ultrasound screen. It makes a great keepsake to put in your Baby book. If you are expecting or have friends or family that are, a Gift Certificate makes the perfect gift. You can purchase one in any amount. We also host Baby Showers if you need the perfect spot to have one. There is nothing like having all of your friends and family be there to watch the show. Over the next few months, our Owner/Operator Stacey Livingston RDMS, will be answering some frequently asked questions that we have heard over the years. Not only is she registered, but she has been doing ultrasounds for 25 years. She has answered will continue to answwer many questions regarding baby ultrasounds. Feel free to text, call or e-mail us at [email protected] if you have questions about your ultrasounds during your pregnancy. Stay tuned for our first question next month: “Why do I have to drink so much water for my ultrasound?”** PLEASE NOTE – The answers that Stacey gives are strictly her opinion as a sonographer. They should not be taken in place of your physicians instructions. She is not a physician and has never claimed to be one.

Details have been released for the sec-ond annual Hats & Hooves Derby Day event to benefit Communities In Schools of Coweta County. Local supporters are expecting great results once more for the program’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The 2015 Hats & Hooves event will be held on Saturday, May 2 at the McRitchie-Hollis Museum at 74 Jackson St. in Newnan. The event runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Those attending will be treated to a live broad-cast of the Kentucky Derby on several big screen TVs. Food and beverages will be served and activities include live music, a silent auction and door prize giveaways. Tickets for the event are $75 per per-son and may be purchased online by reg-istering at ciscoweta.org. All proceeds benefit Communities In Schools of Coweta County, an affiliate of the national and Georgia CIS organiza-tions. “We were overwhelmed by the success of last year’s first Hats & Hooves fund-raiser,” said Gina Weathersby, Execu-tive Director of CIS of Coweta County. “Coweta County has really embraced
the program and we are achieving great things for our students. That work is only possible because of the support of both our corporate sponsors and local indi-viduals who have been so generous with their time, talents and resources.” The Coweta CIS program began re-building at the beginning of the 2014-
15 school year under Weathersby’s leadership. The program is already serving over 60 students at East Coweta High School and continues to grow. A new CIS staffer will be added to the EC program later this year.
Newnan Utilities General Manager Dennis McEntire is Chairman of the Board of Communities In Schools of Coweta County. He praised the CIS pro-gram and encouraged everyone to come out for the Hats & Hooves event and sup-port a great program. “The Communities In Schools pro-gram is vital to maintaining Coweta County’s already great reputation for quality schools,” McEntire said. “The program supports students who are in danger of dropping out of school and CIS’ efforts to make those students pro-ductive members of the community are already paying off.”

Piedmont Newnan Hospital is kicking off another season of Walk With a Doc starting with a physician who can offer plenty of advice as we near the start of allergy season. All members of the Coweta County community are invited to join up with John Vickery IV, M.D. of the Center for Allergy & Asth-ma of Georgia on Saturday, March 28 at Carl Miller Park at 70 Sewell Road in Newnan. Dr. Vickery treats children and adults for asthma, allergic disease and immunologic disorders. He is a member of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), American College of Physicians (ACP), and American Medical Association (AMA). Walkers are encouraged to gather at the park by 8:15 a.m. as the walk begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Vickery will take five minutes to talk about asthma and allergies before leading participants on a walk through the park while he answers questions from participants. Participants will receive a pedometer to help them keep track of the number of steps taken, as well as a choice of a free T-shirt or water bottle. While the event is free, registration is required by calling 877-527-3712 or visiting piedmont.org/walkwithadoc. Registration will also be available on site starting at 8 a.m. Piedmont launched Walk With a Doc after their health needs assessment showed that one in four adults in Coweta County is physically inactive and nearly one in three is considered obese. The walks not only encour-age physical fitness, but they give participants one-on-one time with a physician. The walks will be held the fourth Saturday of each month through September.
