Editor’s/Plates Notes I am back!!!!!! I should have never removed my input from the Crankhandle, it was done to try and stop certain members from personally attacking me. It has not worked and the personal attacks continue. I have a totally clear conscious knowing that I have not done anything that could be remotely called bringing the club into disrepute.

My apologies to Bernie Rutter and Kevin Broad for not including them in last month’s minute’s apology.

Welcome new members Dean Angove and his BMW 318i and Jayme Langfield with a Mack Prime-Mover My sincerest apologies to Bruce Wells, I had his surname wrong in the minutes. He is a really nice guy and it is great to talk about what is happening in the club scene, in particular about log books, modified cars and how registrations are done, plus many other items. Our clubs are very similar in just about everything, 3 years for a president Cowra 2 years. Brake testing the same, it is a pure pleasure to talk; I believe a lot more clubs should communicate.

For any member that has doubts about self-regulation of clubs send questions to Julie Williams. The President of the CMC, Terry Thompson, is the author of both the HCRS & CVS schemes, and was awarded an OAM for his trouble. If they want it verified have them email me and I’ll send it on to Terry for him to answer. mailto:Julie Williams <[email protected]> Regards Jules

FOUNDATION OF BMW BMW was the product of three manufacturing companies that became Bayerische Motorenwerke in 1917. Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke were separate companies until the year 1918 until they were merged into a new public limited company. In 1918, Rapp Motorenwerke had been restructured and taken on the name BMW when it absorbed the struggling Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW).

1) Rapp Motorenwerke Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH manufactured aircraft engines in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. It was founded by Karl Friedrich Rapp in 1913. The company suffered during the early years of World War I until it was ordered by the Prussian army to produce 600 aero engines. This order saved the company from collapse. Soon after, the founder, Karl Rapp was forced out of the company. This prompted a restructuring that led to the

name change to Bayerische Motorenwerke GmbH. Newly restructured Bayerische Motorenwerke was the first company to use the moniker BMW.

2) Bayerische Flugzeugwerke Gustav Otto, a Bavarian aviator, founded the Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik in 1913 near Munich. Because of unnamed issues in the quality of their products, the company was not ordered to provide armaments to the Prussian military during World War I. The company suffered financially before it was purchased by investors and closed in 1918. After its closure, Bayerische Flugzeug Werke (also known as BFW) was merged with the newly restructured Bayerische Motoren Werke to complete the transformation into BMW.

3) Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach was founded as a stock company

in 1896. The company initially made bicycles but after two years in business they began to produce the Wartburg,

Cowra Crankhandle Page 4

a motor car. This was the third automobile manufacturer to be founded in Germany, the first two being Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. The company was acquired by BMW in November 1928. This acquisition contributed to BMW’s shift from manufacturing airplane engines to creating civilian automotive vehicles. The first BMW logo was created in 1917, and it includes the colors blue and white which are the Bavarian state colors. The logo was reimagined several times throughout the years, but it still retained its basic form – including the blue and white colors. Many people believe that the alternating colors in a circle are an interpretation of an airplane propeller. In fact, the BMW logo was an interpretation of Karl Rapp’s former logo. The letters ‘BMW’ are arranged similarly to how Rapp’s original logo was designed. Rapp Motorwekre struggled severely because of quality issues until halfway through World War I. When the Prussian army ordered 600 aeroplane engines from Rapp Motorwerke. Overnight, the company went from being on the brink of extinction to genuinely contributing to the German war effort, and this allowed them to acquire BFW in 1918. Two years after the end of the war, in 1920, Camillo Castiglioni, an Italian-Austrian financier with a passion for aviation, injected capital into the company and gave it a new life. Camilo Castiglioni was the wealthiest man in Central Europe during that what period. He is widely known for having owned over 170 different companies. He is often recognized for having provided the financing and guidance BMW needed to become the successful automotive manufacturer it is today. In 1922, the company relocated the production center to the Oberwiesenfeld airfield near Munich. These new headquarters would become the parent plant for the entire BMW group. Today, the Munich headquarters employ 9,000 employees who make over 200,000 cars every year. In 1923, BMW expanded its operations from aeroplane engines to motorcycles. They announced their first motorcycle that would be called the R32. This was a big step for the company because it has previously only made motor engines and not entire vehicles. BMW created a motorcycle design that was so efficient that the 1923 concept plan is still used in modern BMW motorcycles. In 1928, BMW began working on their first car after they purchased Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, the third automobile manufacturer established in Germany. Cars were not produced in the Munich production center. Instead, the company continued to use the former Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach plant located in Thuringia region of Central Germany. The first car manufactured by BMW was a design borrowed from the Austin Motor Company. It was not until 1932 that BMW utilized its own designs and built its first car. BMW DURING WORLD WAR II During World War II, BMW manufactured war materials for the German military. This was not uncommon as most of the manufacturing facilities, and production plants in Germany came under the control of the government following the Nazi invasion of Poland. During this time, BMW was devoted almost entirely to making aircrafts for the German air force and motorcycles for the German army. Civilian automobile production came to a complete stop until after the war. BMW had a dark history during the Second World War. To keep up with production demands of the German military, BMW began to employ foreign workers in the year 1940. These workers worked on the factory floor taking over the roles that had been left open by German men who had been drafted into the military. These workers were not enough to keep up with the required pace of manufacturing. Beginning in 1942, BMW began to employ POWs from Eastern Europe as well as forced laborers from Western Europe. These workers worked alongside prisoners from Nazi concentration camps. All of the workers in these plants worked in conditions that are considered to be inhumane. Suitable working conditions were sacrificed for efficiency. BMW has publically recognized this history and has expressed sincere regret over the fate of the workers in their plants during this tragic period. Because BMW provided armaments to the German military, the Allied forces took control of each of the BMW plants and dismantled them. To prevent the total destruction of their company, BMW began to produce pots, pans, and other kitchen utensils until they could once again produce motorcycles and automobiles.

Cowra Crankhandle Page 5

All BMW plants were dismantled by the Allies following the war. BMW had little to no influence over its organization at its Munich plant until 1949. In the Allach plant, BMW was not allowed any power until the year 1955. As a part of war reparations, many of the machines in the Munich plant were taken apart and then shipped overseas as a part of Germany’s post-war reparations. BMW – POST-WAR REBOUND Rebounding from the costs of the post-war reparations was not an easy task for the German economy or its industry leaders. Thankfully, the costs of World War II did not lead to the same economic instability that followed the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I.

In 1951, BMW was able to produce its first automobile since the start of the war. The car was called the 501. The 501 was a large saloon vehicle that could seat as many as six people comfortably. Although it was designed to be a luxury car, it did not succeed in the luxury market. However, it did play an important role in re-establishing the company’s reputation as one of the leading manufacturers of vehicles that were not only high-quality but also technologically advanced. The BMW 501 lived a short life and was taken off of the production lines in 1958. After nearly 15 years of uncertainty,

BMW was able to negotiate its independence for a second time in the year 1959. Daimler-Benz had its eye on acquiring BMW through a restructuring package, but the shareholders of BMW rejected this generous offer at the end of the year. With the help of financial assistance from the German government, BMW was restructured under new management in 1960.

Dip into egg wash, then into panko crumbs and press lightly to make sure fish is well coated with crumbs and is evenly coated. Carefully lower fish fillets into the fryer for 2–3 minutes, or until golden, crisp and cooked through. Drain immediately on paper towel and keep warm. Whilst fish is cooking toast the buns in the grill until lightly toasted. To assemble the burger, put tartare sauce on both insides of bun, place one fish fillet on bun and place cheese on top. Layer pickle evenly across cheese, put tartare on top of pickles, repeat this for the next two layers. Season with salt and pepper. Joke

Murphy, a furniture dealer from Dublin, decided to expand the line of furniture in his store, so he decided to go to Paris to see what he could find. After arriving in Paris, he visited with some manufacturers and selected a line that he thought would sell well back home. To celebrate the new acquisition, he decided to visit a small bistro and have a glass of wine. As he sat enjoying his wine, he noticed that the small place was quite crowded, and that the other chair at his table was the only vacant seat in the house.

Before long, a very beautiful young Parisian girl came to his table, asked him something in French (which Murphy couldn't understand), so he motioned to the vacant chair and invited her to sit down.

He tried to speak to her in English, but she did not speak his language. After a couple of minutes of trying to communicate with her, he took a napkin and drew a picture of a wine glass and showed it to her. She nodded, so he ordered a glass of wine for her.

After sitting together at the table for a while, he took another napkin, and drew a picture of a plate with food on it, and she nodded. They left the bistro and found a quiet cafe that featured a small group playing romantic music. They ordered dinner, after which he took another napkin and drew a picture of a couple dancing. She nodded, and they got up to dance. They danced until the cafe closed and the band was packing up. Back at their table, the young lady took a napkin and drew a picture of a four-poster bed. To this day, Murphy has no idea how she figured out he was in the furniture business RuthyG

AUSSIE COLLOQUIALISMS I was chatting with a colleague at work the other day and he spouted this fantastically vivid line that almost made me dizzy with delight. It got me to thinking about the Aussie colloquialisms (yes I had to google search that to spell it correctly! I hope I’m not alone in that), this also ties in with a discussion I had with Tony Talbot on Facebook, to assist him with coming up with some neologic profanity for his new piece of work. What does that have to do with Aussie slang and colloquialisms you ask!? Well Tony actually asked me if I knew of any Aussie slang that might be appropriate. Now I don’t know if the ideas I provided Tony will make it into his new book, but I thought I might share some of the interesting, quirky, humorous and otherwise bizarre lines and words us Aussies may or may not use in everyday life. Hold onto your hats people, things are about to get a bit ocker in here! Just in case you didn’t know what ocker means: A thing or person characterised by their (usually extreme) Australian-ness. Especially refers to persons with heavy Australian accents and mannerisms. Let’s begin: Flat out like a centipede skipping ~ had a busy day The winner is harder to pick than a broken nose ~ it’s really hard to pick the winning entry Couldn’t pull the skin off custard ~ referring to an old powerless car Full as a Dr’s wallet. Full as a bull’s bum in the spring time ~ after eating a huge meal Dumb as a box full of hammers ~ referring to someone who is stupid Blind as a welders dog ~ to be extremely drunk Lower than a snakes belly ~ an expression of contempt about someone It’d put a horn on a jellyfish ~ when something is incredibly awesome To live off the smell of an oily rag ~ to live extremely cheaply Bushman’s clock ~ a kookaburra Two pot screamer ~ someone who gets drunk on very little alcohol And we’re off and racing… you might need a drink to quench your thirst. Earbashing ~ to talk incessantly Dag ~ an affectionate insult for someone who is, or is perceived to be, unfashionable, lacking self-consciousness about their appearance and/or with poor social skills yet affable and amusing Blotto ~ Incredibly drunk Tucker ~ food Galah ~ a fool (but is also a grey and pink native bird)

Cowra Crankhandle Page 9

Yabber ~ to talk Bodgie ~ fake, inferior, worthless or poorly made Hoon ~ a lout or hooligan That’s just a few choice words and sayings for you.

One final thing for you, just because I stumbled across this rather amusing photo while looking for the photos I picked above: photo credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ratinasock/4975448831/in/photostream/ It reads: Dear Bogans, It’s ‘You’, not ‘Yous’, there’s no such word. Sincerely, The English Language

Gooloogong Markets 12th February

What a glorious drive, just wonderful and relaxing. Although it has and is hot the countryside out to Gooloogong looks picturesque. Markets had lots of stalls, but not much for the males. After wandering around the markets, then sitting outside for a drink, we discussed what we should do next. Decision was pretty easy – home to air-conditioned comfort. Always a great day, with vehicles of every shape, size and colour to suit everybody's taste, The added attraction of a flyover went down very well. It although took a long time. Announced at 11:00

an, then 12 noon, finally after 1:00 pm the plane flew over. We had a good display but even better was the cruise up to Orange and the drive home - just fantastic. 5

cars from the CAVC made a nice display. It never fails to amaze me how some of the vehicles got onto H plates - not even close to the RMS Policy

as being as close to original as possible. The worst offender was a Rolls Royce, sitting on the ground, massive wide wheels and fitted with a modified 350 Chev. Great looking car but how on earth did it get on club plates.

This year there were fewer vehicles that I wondered how they drove them, let alone registered them. The new modified vehicle plates "D Plates" in my opinion aren't pretty at all.

A great day and a fantastic array of absolutely beautiful vehicles, trucks and bikes. There was an incident near the end of the day that some-one should have photographed. OH!!!! WHAT A SIGHT!!!! Russell running chasing the clubs gazebo across the paddock, yes he has got, no it got away. Shorts falling down – one hand trying to catch gazebo the other trying desperately to hold his shorts up. FOR SALE 42 CHEV BLITZ TRUCK, Made in Canada, assembled in Melbourne Australia. It was on a working farm in Stanthorpe for almost 30 Years, Prior to that time is/was working on the Qld Railway line as a Sleeper truck. It was refurbished into the colour shown in the past three years and is located on the mid north coast (our place) in Taree, NSW. The Engine is a beauty. A very quiet straight 6 and it can run all day. Original 161 Engine, matching the Engine number and Compliance plates to the Truck! We think it was originally a C15A Blitz Truck. Works well, although we are sure that the gears can do with some adjustment to improve the speed. We purchased it in 2009. Sad to sell but need space for other valuables. Want to find someone to take care of the Truck as we have. Could be a terrific Vintage Collection for an enthusiast or somehow use in a Business. Please email [email protected] and we can set up time to speak or give more information/pictures.
