Handicraftscreate usesThe reception room of a house, from the past, has been a space where its owner engaged in academic pursuits and guests could take a rest. Therefore, the Korean traditional reception room is a place where home and society are combined in a natural way. The place where the warmth of a cup of tea served by the owner makes for an element of daily civilized life, where the study of the humanities flourishes, and Korean classical scholars spend time is a Korean traditional reception room, or today’s library.

Handicrafts make natureThe floor is a place that is open to the outside but belongs to a room, not the outside. The floor of a Korean traditional house embraces the outside nature, minimizes external shocks or impacts, and fills a space that may create a feeling of comfortableness. These are the features that characterize the floor of a Korean traditional house.

Handicrafts make a lifeIt is a kitchen where images of a family can be seen openly. Just as when people share a fire they are family and when they don’t they are strangers, a kitchen is a symbolic place that is crucial to the life of one’s family and represents its independence. Therefore, our ancestors would say that a kitchen is a space where the health, safety, and luck of a family start.

Handicrafts contain the heart, patience, time, and consideration of their makers. The exhibition “Handicrafts Create a Way of Living” shows both the unchanging uses and changing shapes of living crafts in the present space reflecting our traditions. We are also seeking to identify some links connecting our traditional and modern lives by reflecting the various possibilities of practical and beautiful handicrafts and the influence they have cultural life. We hope that the exhibition “Handicraft Create a Way of Life” will create the opportunity to rediscover the value of modern living crafts based on old traditions and crafts: the uses of a modern library that originate from a traditional reception room, stylish cooking tools made by reinterpreting the present kitchen, and a living room reflecting the characteristics of nature that are inherent in the floor of a traditional hall, the center of a Korean traditional house.
