Dear Members,

The Fall to-do list is done. We have completed the last greens aerification, applied pre-emergent on 115 acres of turf, raised the height on fairways and greens, rye seed is up and being mowed. The course is ready for the cold temperatures. The staff is not!! We have had a couple of days of needing layers in the morning. But the blood is still too thin for the cold blustery days.

The winter project list is not even started yet. We have a few things to get

through first. We are waiting on one more good frost to nip back the rest of the Bermuda grass before we mow the rough for a final time. And of course, leaves will be a daily task for the next few weeks to months. Once we get through those two things, we will assess needs and more forward on projects.

We have slowed down enough that staff is now cycling through personal

time and vacation time. When they are not here it makes me realize how important each and every one of the golf course maintenance staff are to our success. We have had a pretty successful year and I am grateful to each of my employees for the hard work and dedication they show every day. Sincerely, Daren Hazel Hillcrest Course Superintendent

From the Grounds up!

Kathy’s Tennis Report

Hello Tennis Players,

This month’s article deals with “controlled aggression”. Many players attempt to play aggressively and make way too many unforced errors. The other extreme is to take a lot of

pace off their shots and play too cautiously. If you are having trouble mixing up your pace and playing smart, consider improving your ability to play with controlled aggression. Controlled aggression means to hit the ball aggressively, deep and keep your opponent pinned to the

baseline, but it is not reckless. There is a purpose behind your shots and they are within your capability. You are not hitting shots you don’t have and instead are choosing shots you know

you own and are using them in the right situations.

To improve your ability to play in this mode, focus on the depth of the shots and moving your opponent around the court. Rather than trying to win the point in one or two shots, focus on

working the point in an aggressive fashion.

It is important to understand the benefit of playing in this way because otherwise you are not likely to embrace it. The truth is you will win matches if you can maintain a level of consistency

with offense. Hitting the right shots at the right time and dictate play with an attitude of controlled aggression will help you avoid the extremes of overhitting or playing too

conservatively. Try it in practice matches so that you will feel comfortable with this mindset in competitive match.

Hope to see you soon!! Kathy
