About Worship

We follow an ancient pattern through the liturgy (which literally means “the work of the people”).

Some parts of the service may change each week, but there is a consistent flow: praising God, hear-

ing God’s word, offering our prayers and gifts, celebrating communion, and being sent into the world

for service. The format remains fairly constant, but the style will vary widely. Sometimes we sing with

the pipe organ, and the ministers chant. Sometimes we worship accompanied by piano, guitars,

drums, violins, flutes — or whatever our folk play. We range from Bach to blues, because we know

that different styles connect to different people. So we all worship together, and change the style eve-

ry few weeks. It’s one of the ways we minister to and with each other and build community. Thank

you for being part of our worship and community today!

*At the asterisk, stand as you are able.

Gathering Together in Worship

*Confession and Forgiveness P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have

been saved. In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, your sins are

forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. C. Amen. *Prayer of the Day P: King eternal, you are the ruler of our hearts. Show us through your humble example what it truly means to lead, by giving all of yourself for the sake of your beloved. In your name, we pray. C: Amen.

Responding to the Word of God

*Gospel Acclamation “Lord, Let My Heart Be Good Soil” ELW, # 512 The Gospel (please be seated) John 12:12-27 P: The Holy Gospel according to John.

C: Glory to you, O Lord.

12The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was

coming to Jerusalem. 13

So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord — the King of Israel!" 14

Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written: 15

"Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!" 16

His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified,

then they remembered that these things had been written of him and had been done to him.

17So the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of

the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify. 18

It was also because they heard that he had performed this sign that the crowd went to meet him.

19The

Pharisees then said to one another, "You see, you can do nothing. Look, the world has gone after him!" 20

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21

They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus."

22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went

and told Jesus. 23

Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and

dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25

Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant

be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. 27

Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say — 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. L: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Continued from previous page Baptism: (11:00) Cherri Lynne Lauret Bernas (see insert) *Apostles Creed A: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Prayers of the People After each petition of the prayers: A: King of Kings.

C: Hear our prayer. *Passing the Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us share the peace. Offering *Offertory Response “Take My Life, That I May Be” ELW, #685

*Offertory Prayer

gifts unto your service and according to your will, O God. Teach us

the joy of giving, that we may truly know the depths of your love for

all.

C: Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the king-dom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

The Distribution of Communion

The body and blood of Christ are present in this sacrament, for the forgiveness of sin and the strengthening of faith. All people are welcome to share in this meal with us. Parents, if you have a young child who receives communion, please indicate that when the minister comes to you. Those who do not receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing; simply keep your hands folded. Come forward and receive the bread from the minister. Gluten-free wafers are available. The gold chal-ice contains wine; you may drink directly from the cup or dip your bread into the wine. The pottery chalice contains non-alcoholic grape juice, which you may receive by dipping your bread into the juice. Return to your seat by the side aisles.

If you would like communion brought to you, simply let an usher know.
