A message from the President’s Office Dear LC Alumni and Benefactors,

My deepest appreciation and thanks to all of you who have donated to Lansdale Catholic High School and are represented here in our 2015-2016 Annual Report. In particular, I am grateful to Rich Lanahan, Director of Institutional Advancement and Major Gifts and Aisling Ardiff, Director of Alumni Events and Database Manager, for their dedication and tireless efforts in not only producing this Annual Report, but in all they do for our community every day.

Those names shown in the next few pages have given generously to our various requests over the past year. This financial support assists many of our current students and their families and signifies your belief in the core values and mission of Lansdale Catholic. Our recent graduates continue to gain entrance to prestigious colleges and universities, receiving over $140 million in scholarships and grants; including full tuition undergraduate and graduate scholarships.

As you can see with the alumni giving statistics section of this report, we can only reach higher for increased support. I encourage alumni to engage your fellow classmates to step up, follow your lead and give back to LC for the 2016-2017 Crusader Fund. Let’s focus together on making Lansdale Catholic High School the best secondary school in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

God bless your generosity and may our Patroness, St. Therese of the Little Flower, continue to “…let fall from heaven a shower of roses…” on our great community. Sincerely,

James W. Casey President

A message from the Advancement Office Dear Alumni, Benefactors and Friends of LC, I am excited to share with you our Lansdale Catholic Annual Report for 2015-2016. I am thankful that we have benefactors like you that make it possible for our students to experience an LC education. If your company matches gifts, you can make your donation to our school go twice as far! Usually, matching gifts are equal to the amount given by the origi-nal donor, i.e. a 1:1 ratio. For example, if a donor makes a gift of $100 to an or-ganization, the matching company will also give $100, making the total gift worth $200. Some corporations offer matching gift programs to the spouses of their company employees and retirees. Below is the list of companies, that supported Lansdale Catholic through a Matching Gift.

Since 1992, thousands of high school students have participated in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), where teams from across the world build and program robots to complete a different challenge every year. The game changes year to year so students can have a wider array of experiences and try different things each season. The season begins in January with an international kickoff, and teams then have six weeks to complete a robot. From there teams compete in several competitions in the hopes of qualifying for the FIRST World Championship held every year. By participating in robotics, students gain hands-on engineering experience and learn a physical application to physics. Students have the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and learn skills they will use for life. With the increase of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) in both the classroom and real-world jobs, the popularity of robotics has soared in recent years. Last year alone over 75,000 high school students competed in FRC.

In the midst of all this excitement, Lansdale Catholic’s team prepared for their nineteenth season. Known as FRC Team 272 the Cyber Crusaders, the team began meeting in October to prepare for the season. Stu-dents held an election for the co-president representa-tives of the team as well as three manager positions. The managers are the heads of three different de-partments: engineering, programming, and business. Those in the engineering department are responsible for the design and construction of the robot, and the programming department, in layman’s terms, makes the robot move. The business department is in charge of anything not involving the robot: team website,

business planning, imagery, photography, award sub-missions, and social media.

Students were well prepared for the new challenge when it was revealed in early January. Early one Saturday morning thirty nine team members gathered at LC to watch the reveal of this year’s challenge. To the delight of the team, the challenge this year is called Stronghold, and the basic premise is that robots storm a “castle” by crossing various defenses and throwing “boulders” at the opposing alliance’s fort. As the Cyber Crusaders, this challenge corresponds perfectly with the team’s theme and image. With only six weeks to build a robot, the team immediately got to work. With meetings six times a week, students worked extremely hard to create 2016’s robot. When the time finally came to complete the robot, everyone was thrilled to see their efforts and team work pay off.

Both my wife and I are LC alums. Mary, my wife, in 1966 and I, in 1965. Last year I received an invitation to attend a Golden Anniversary Graduation Ceremony. It would be held in conjunction with the Class of 2015’s Graduation Ceremony. I was hesitant to accept however my wife insisted and even replied for me. She wanted me to be the test case since her 50th would be this year and she wanted to see what she might expect to do. The ceremony was a great event. The Class of 1965 sat up front at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa. As I sat there and watched each member of the Class of 2015 climb UP the steps to receive their diploma I could clearly remember being in their shoes not so long ago. Life’s joys and successes all in front of them and I felt their excitement and anticipation right there with them. Realization of my actual state in life came quickly to the surface when the Bishop and his entourage came DOWN the steps to present each member of my class with our 50th year diploma. Guess they realized that some of us might not be able to CLIMB up those steps as easily as we could 50 years ago. Discrimination or consideration… ??? Actually a very thoughtful gesture since even the Bishop is much younger than my class members. The luncheon reception back at LC and the tour of the “Old School” was the final touch on a very memorable day. And YES Mary did attended her Golden Graduation this past year. Thank you LC for all that you have done and continue to do for us and all of your grads!!!

STEM: Not Just for Men By: Sabrina Antoni, Class '15

STEM Analysis

The following is an excerpt from a college research paper, STEM: Not Just for Men, written by 2015 graduate Sabrina Antoni. Sabrina researched and analyzed data on the reasons for the current disparity between males and females in the STEM workforce. She noted that the number of Lansdale Catholic females pursuing STEM majors are significantly higher than the national average. Additionally, Lansdale Catholic has some unique faculty statistics that provide the ideal environ-ment for both males and females to investigate STEM careers, build confidence and create networking opportunities in STEM fields.

The reason for women choosing non STEM careers may not be just environmental nor purely biological, but rather a combination of both factors. However, it is also possible that the way STEM careers are presented to women is not activating the correct neural patterns to entice women into the field. Since women are more attracted to both human faces and humanitarian efforts, they are more aware of societal needs and more empathetic than men. The ability to be empathetic also makes women more dependent on role models. Huhman emphasizes the need for role models for young women by stating, “We need more visibility when it comes to the work

female engi-neers have already ac-complished, so young girls know it’s not just men who are behind tech-nology they use in their everyday lives”. In order to

increase the number of women in STEM fields, there needs to be available female role models and roles in

STEM that they may pursue. These role models are essential as girls become aware of themselves and the opportunities in STEM. Positive female STEM role models produce female STEM talent. Rankins, Rankins, and Inniss explain, “In fact, Bettinger and Long (2005) have shown that one of the greatest influences on and de-terminants of success in STEM disciplines for female students is access to same-gender role models (Rankins, Rankins, Inniss). To test this concept of girls responding to female role models and the impact of female STEM role models, a survey was conducted at Lansdale Catholic High School with the graduating class of 2016. Of the 114 respondents, 51 students plan on pursuing STEM majors. Of the 51 students, 27 were male and 24 were female. Contrary to the national statistics there exists a very small STEM gen-der gap at Lansdale Catholic High School. In addi-tion, the number of women entering a STEM intent major is above the national number. Two unusual facts which likely play a role in Lansdale Catholic’s STEM statistics are: a full-time, female STEM coor-dinator who specializes in STEM career advising, and a STEM faculty consisting of 85% females with ad-vanced degrees. This environment provides female students with STEM role models that are not typically present at most high schools. The opportunities for STEM counselling, networking and career guidance are offered to both males and females equally but the research data shows that 83.3% of Lansdale Catholic

Alumnus Peter Walsh speaks to LC students about Stress & Anxiety for our STEM Lecture Series.

In 2001, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program to enable private businesses to receive a tax credit on specific corporate taxes when making donations to a nonprofit scholarship program. The EITC program enables Lansdale Catholic High School to provide financial aid to students. Companies will receive a 75% tax credit for donations for a single year commitment to EITC. The credit increases to 90% if the company commits to making the same donations for two consecutive years. A business can receive up to $300,000 in tax credits annually.
