The final line-up for the 2015 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, Presented by Best Western, has been decided.

Women’s teams met at the Golden Ears Winter Club from December 12-14 to battle for the final two berths for the BC Scotties, which take place at the same venue from January 21-25, 2015.

The A event winner was Team Van Osch who represent Nanaimo Curling Club. The rink was skipped by last year’s winning skip Kesa Van Osch, alongside her sister Kalia Van Osch who plays third, second Trysta Vandale and lead Kelsey Steiger.

The B event winner was Team Lewis from Royal City Club. The team, who played seven games over the weekend, is made up of

skip Kristy Lewis, third Jody Maskiewich, second Barbara Zbeetnoff and lead Jenn Howard.

These two rinks will be joined at the Scotties by the three teams who qualified at an earlier open event which took place at Kelowna Curling Club in November.

November’s A event winners was Team Wark who are skipped by Sarah Wark who was part of the team which recently came third in

the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships. She is joined by third Simone Brosseau, second Michelle Allen and lead Rachelle Kallechy.

The B event winner in Kelowna was Team Russett from Kamloops Curling Club. The team is skipped by Amanda Russett, third is Crista Sanbrooks, second is Ashley Nordin and the team is rounded out by lead Courtney Karwandy.

The Kelowna C event

winner was Team Knezevic from Prince George. The foursome is made up of skip Patti Knezevic, third Kristen Fewster, second Jen Rusnell and lead Rhonda Camozzi.

The field for the Championships in January is completed by Team Gushulak and Team Scott, who both qualified as Canadian Team Ranking System points winners, and the defending champions who are now skipped by Dailene Sivertson.

December 2014

The full line-up for the 2015 Tim Hortons BC Junior Curling Championships has been decided and it should be an exciting start to the New Year.

Eight Junior Men’s and eight Junior Women’s teams have now qualified for the provincial event which takes place at Parksville Curling Club from December 28 2014 – January 3, 2015.

Curling fans will be able to enjoy the event’s climax on January 3 on Sportsnet with the Women’s Final beginning to air at 9am on Sportsnet Pacific and the Men’s Final airing at 1.30pm on Sportsnet One.

On the Junior Men’s side, Team Tanaka will be returning to the Championships after defeating Team Horvath – a foursome which contained two 2014 gold medallists – in the A Event of the Coastal playdowns.

Another team competing is Team Henderson, from the Victoria Curling Centre, who qualified in the Coastal Playdowns B event.

They will be joined by fellow Islanders Team Croteau who qualified from the C Event alongside Team Carpenter.

The winner of the Kootenay playdown, and qualifier for the Interior region, is Team Bartlett, whilst Team Love and Team Schiman grabbed the qualifying spots at the Okanagan event.

The final team in the Men’s draw will be Team Loeppky of Prince Rupert Curling Club.

Whilst there will be quite a few curlers making their Championship debut on the Men’s side, the Junior Women’s draw contains several familiar faces including members of all three medal winning teams from last year.

Team Daniels, who qualified in the Coastal A Event, is made up of three gold medallists from the 2014 Tim Hortons BC Junior Curling Championships. Sarah Daniels (Skip), Marika Van Osch (Third) and Megan Daniels (Lead) will be

hoping to repeat last year’s success alongside their new teammate Dezaray Hawes (Second).

The 2013 Canadian Junior Champions, Team Brown, will also be competing after they qualified at the Okanagan playdown. It is the same rink that won the national title two years ago and took silver at last year’s BC Junior Championships.

Shawna Jensen, who was a bronze medallist in 2014, will this year skip a team made up of curlers from three different locations - Powell River Curling Club, Juan de Fuca Curling Centre and Delta Thistle Curling Club.

Vancouver Island’s Team Coulombe alongside Team Zucchet, who represent Chilliwack Curling Club and Team Egan from the Coquitlam Curling Centre.

They will be joined at the Championships by Team Fisher, representing the Vernon Curling Centre, who made it through the Okanagan A and B Event. The final team rounding out the field will be Team Connell from Prince George.

Admission to the championships is free. For information about the Parksville Curling Club, visit the Club’s website.

Begin the New Year with some great curling action

World’s best wheelchair curlers come to RichmondFrom November 19-23 disabled curlers from around the world

descended on Richmond Curling Club when the 8th Annual International Wheelchair Bonspiel, hosted by Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD), took place.

The event attracted teams from as far afield as Korea, Scotland, Russia and the US, as well as the Canadian Paralympic team and several other clubs from across the country.

The bonspiel attracted a great deal of excitement as 10 teams took part in a full round-robin schedule which peaked with a close gold medal game between Russia and Scotland which Russia won by just one point.

BC curlers of all ages have the chance to compete at the Sochi 2014 venue where Canada’s curlers won three golds – but only if you register now.

The Sochi Ice Cube Curling Centre will host the 2015 Mixed Doubles Championship, and the first step to get there is to enter the BC Championship which will take place in Peace Arch from January 29 – February 2, 2015. The deadline for registration is January 4, 2015.

The BC champions will then compete at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials which will take place in Ottawa in the spring, with the winners going on to represent Canada in Sochi.

This is the third year of the BC Championships, which debuted at the North Shore Winter Club in 2013 and ran at the Golden Ears Winter Club in 2014. It is an open event so the draw will depend on the number of teams that enter. Last year Bryan Kedziora and Colleen Hannah came through a field of 15 teams to be crowned the champions.

There are no age restrictions on who can play so entrants can be anywhere from juvenile (16 and under) up to masters level (60 plus). The inaugural BC

Championship in 2013 was won by the juvenile pairing of Tyler Tardi and Dezaray Hawes so it really is an event for all ages.

Shannon Aleksic, Curl BC’s High Performance and Competitions Manager, said: “The Mixed Doubles Championship offers teams a great chance to compete in this relatively new form of the game and have a shot at becoming BC Champions. You have to be in it to win it though so I’d encourage everyone to register by the deadline.”

Mixed Doubles was developed by the World Curling Federation in 1998 in response to a surge in interest in curling after the sport was added to the Olympic Games programme in Nagano. Since then Mixed Doubles has become increasingly popular and could be an Olympic event by 2018.

The discipline involves one male and one female curler and the game is played over eight ends (instead of the usual 10). Each team has only six stones and one of those stones from each team is prepositioned on the centre line before every end of play. One player delivers the first and last stones of the end while the other player throws the

second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next. Both team members are also allowed to sweep.

At the national trials in Ottawa, a total of 32 pairs will compete, with the teams divided into four round-robin pools of eight, with the top two from each pool and the next four best round-robin records moving onto the 12-team single-knockout playoff round.

Register your team by January 4 via our website.

Be part of the women’s Friendship Tour

We are looking for female curlers aged 55 and over to take part in a Friendship Tour to the US in November 2015.

In November 2012, BC hosted the US on a tour that visited seven curling clubs, and now it is time for the US to welcome teams from BC.

Tour coordinator Kathleen MacKenzie is looking for 16 senior women (55+) to make up four teams to travel to the US.

Interested curlers should email a resume outlining their curling experience, club affiliation, curling achievements and volunteer history to Curl BC to [email protected] by January 18, 2014.

The cost of the tour is the responsibility of the individual curlers and will include expenses for hotel accommodation when billets are not available, meals, ground transportation, team uniforms and tour pins. Individual curlers will be responsible for their airfare to Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Each curler will need proof of a valid Canadian Passport and travel insurance.

Any questions about the tour can be sent to [email protected].

We are pleased to announce that the best women curlers in BC will go head-to-head in Coquitlam in 2016.

The 2016 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, Presented by Best Western, will take place in January 2016 at the Coquitlam Curling Club but an exact date is yet to be announced.

The event will showcase the province’s top women who will be playing for the opportunity to represent BC at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Grande Prairie, Alberta from February 20-28.

Barry Ayers, Coquitlam Curling Association Vice President, said “We

are delighted to be hosting the 2016 Scotties in Coquitlam.

“We’re very proud of our facility and think that it will be the ideal home for such a great event and will be pleased to welcome everyone to the club.”

Curl BC CEO Scott Braley said: “We are looking forward to staging the 2016 Scotties BC Women’s Curling

Championship in Coquitlam. The club has successfully hosted several events for us in the past and they are part of a modern, multi-sport facility that will be ideal for the Scotties.”

The Coquitlam Curling Club is in Poirier Sports & Leisure Complex and is a six sheet facility with over 550 members.

2016 BC Scotties to be held in Coquitlam

On December 17, Gregor Robertson, Mayor of the City of Vancouver, announced that in 2016 the city will welcome over 7,500 amateur athletes from around the world as it hosts the first ever Americas Masters Games .

The event, which is for anyone aged 35 and over, will feature a mix of both summer and ice sports and curling is one of the sports under consideration.

Scott Braley, CEO of Curl BC, said: “Curl BC is actively promoting curling’s involvement in this prestigious international event.”

The programme of sports will be finalized by the end of April 2015 and we will let you know if curling is included.

For more information on the Masters Games, visit the City of Vancouver website.

Americas Masters coming to Vancouver in 2016

BY NORM SCOTT - on behalf of the Vancouver Ladies’ Curling Club Over the last few issues of The Curling Connection we have told you about some clubs that have celebrated some impressive milestones but this month we’re celebrating a curler who is nearing 100 and still going strong.

Lola Holmes, who plays out of the Vancouver Curling Club, is 96 years old but still takes to the ice every week.

Lola first discovered a love of the sport in Sudbury, ON, when she was aged 25 but unfortunately she had to stop curling just three years later when the combination of caring for her family and working as a nurse became too much.

She returned to curling five decades later when at the age of 80 she moved to Vancouver and wanted to find a way to stay active. Lola joined a novice clinic and before long she was playing in the Vancouver Daytime Ladies league.

Talking about why she enjoys the sport, Lola said: “It is an excellent way to keep my mind and body active, while at the same time being able to socialise.

“I’ve had lots of fun times over the years and, no matter what happens, I always make my weekly games with the other girls!”, she added.

Out of all of the fun she’s had over the years, Lola picks out one particular highlight which came in 2011 at the Club’s ‘Guys and Dolls spiel’ when Lola made a triple takeout that became the talk of the whole event.

Lola (in blue) still curls regularly at the age of 96.

With experiences like this, and her overall passion for the sport, it is no surprise that Lola says she wants to keep curling forever.

Do you know a remarkable curler like Lola? Let us know by emailing [email protected].

Faster than you can pick out just the right holiday gift, a thief can break into your car. Downtown Vancouver attracts thousands of visitors seeking gifts and cheerful winter attractions. Unfortunately, the city also attracts criminals who see ‘treasure-trunks’ of holiday loot in busy parking lots.“Criminals do their own holiday shopping from the trunk of your car,” warns Detective Phil Ens, VPD Auto Crime Enforcement Unit. “Whenever you leave valuables unattended in your vehicle, they’re at risk of being stolen. People think that gifts are safe in the trunk, but they’re not.” “Thieves will take anything and everything out of your car. And you’d be surprised how quickly they can do it,” says Colin Brown, Chief Operating Officer of Canadian Direct Insurance and sponsor of the Safer Parking Initiative. The VPD and Canadian Direct Insurance are encouraging shoppers to choose parking facilities with the Safer Parking Award, which identifies parking facilities whose managers and owners have taken extra steps to ensure a safer environment for customers. Many of the 59 accredited Safer Parking Award facilities report zero crime occurrences on a monthly basis, and the Safer Parking Initiative has helped reduce crime by an average of 47% in awarded Vancouver parkades. The VPD and Canadian Direct Insurance are urging holiday shoppers to be vigilant. Follow these guidelines to help protect your vehicle and property:

Safer holiday shopping parking tips from Canadian Direct Insurance1. Choose a parking lot with the Safer Parking Award logo.2. Don’t store gifts in your trunk. Thieves often follow customers out to their car and break in when they leave.3. Use an anti-theft device. Not only will your car be safer, but you can get a discount on your auto-insurance.4. If practical, remove garage door openers and keep insurance papers hidden in your car rather than in your glove box. Together they give a thief your home address, and a way to get in.5. Don’t leave ANY possessions in your vehicle.

If you do have personal property stolen from your vehicle you could be in for a shock as many insurers only offer a maximum payout of $2,500 but you can ensure this does not happen to you. As part of the affinity program provided by Canadian Direct Insurance, Curl BC members who qualify for the Association Endorsement face no limit on the reimbursement they receive if personal property is stolen from their vehicle. If you want to learn more about the home insurance affinity program offered to Curl BC members through Canadian Direct Insurance, call 1.888.225.5234 and identify yourself as a Curl BC member to receive the best discounts and coverages.

Thieves will be holiday shopping this Christmas too - from your vehicle

BY AL KERSEY Last month, Optimist junior curlers helped pay their own way by raising pledge money and participating in the Optimist Walk for Youth. For their efforts, the kids were given free hotdogs and hot chocolate and a free skate with a donation to the Food Bank.

Seventy-five per cent of the money they raised came back to them in a formal cheque presentation in a break during league play at the Langley Curling Centre.

After modest expenses, the Optimists donated the remaining 25 per cent back to non-profit groups in

the community. Also, each registered group was entered in a bonus draw. The winner of the bonus draw received a donation matching the pledge funds they raised.

Every year youth groups in a variety of fields use this event as their major fundraiser. Whether they are raising money for team uniforms, musical equipment or an end of year event, 75 per cent of all funds raised are returned to the group.

This year was the 35th annual Optimist Walk for Youth in conjunction with the annual Optimist Free Skate.

Optimists are delighted to work for the good of the community with many youth groups. Among other youth groups, cheques were presented to Optimist Junior Interclub Curling League (since 1989) $457; Delta Thistle Junior Curling $323; Peace Arch Junior Curling $825; Royal City Junior Curling $150 and; Coquitlam Junior Curling $300.

Festive fowl fun for all the familyBY PAUL MONTGOMERYOn December 6, Merritt Curling Centre hosted a one day Turkey Spiel which was a flyaway success. The spiel had an open mixed format (at least one person of the opposite sex on each team) with every team playing three 4-end games, and then the day finished with a turkey dinner. The entry fee was just $20 per person and there were even bird-themed prizes for the top three teams based on the total points scored. The local Cooper’s grocery store kindly donated four turkeys for first prize, four chickens for second prize and four dozen eggs for third prize as well as an additional turkey to be used for a draw to the button contest. The event was very successful with fourteen teams entering including a family team with two young children who curl in the Centre’s junior league. The day ran from 10:00a.m. until 5pm and the draw to the button competition raised $136 for the BC Children’s Hospital. We then enjoyed the festive feast which was cooked on site by Ryan Weatherbie.

Everyone was in very good spirits and had a great deal of fun with many teams using the day as a chance to introduce non-curling friends into the game. The competing teams were a mix of regulars from the Club’s leagues as well as people who do not take to the ice that often. The day was such a success that plans are already underway for another one next year.

Wishing you a very happy holidays and a prosperous New Year from all of the Curl BC team
