Wf Premier, on a recent visit to Eng- -

js, land, is supposed to have been the; promotion of this sclicmc. If the

' annexation bo consummated, it willadd greatly to the commercial iin- -

t portance of Canada. In 1881 thepopulation of Canada was 1,350,000,and that of the British West Indies, including tho Bahamas and Bcrmu- -

m das, about 1,230,000. In the periodfrom 18G5 to 1879, tlic last of whichstatistics arc available, tlic annualaverage of exports of those Islands

revenue of tlic Islands, from theapplication of tlic Canadian tariff, would more than make up the costof protecting them fiom internaldisorders, now borne by the BritishGovernment. The matter is notwithout interest to the Hawaiian

f Kingdom, for if the annexation takesplace, and "the reciprocity treaty,

"negotiated between the Governmentsof the United Slates and Canada, beratified by tlic legislatures of bothnniiiiti'ip.o. nn imiini'l.-iii- vpault in fl,nu . : ' ' . .::American sugar market will ensue.

h if reciprocity is to be the order ofthe day among American countries, this nation should have all the sharepossible in the affairs of the happycommercial family. Therefore, our

?, Government may well take stens to&' add to the proposed treaty with

Mexico one with Canada. ThePacific trade of tho uoith country, upon the completion of the CanadianPacific Railway from ocean to ocean, will bo vastly increased. Steamersarc being now provided for a linefrom British Columbia to Japan nnd

fJCliina, and tlic probability is that aInline between tlic Canadian Pacific

PCoast and tlic sister colonics off Australasia will only bo a matter ofKjtimo, which the prize of Hawaiian

trade tnrown in would materially'promote. Reciprocal trade witli

r'Caiiatfa, as wo pointed out before, would inevitably enlarge the market

and lumber supplies.L . .
