Department of Political Science
politicalscience.unc.edu
The Department of Political Science offers a range of courses across five subfields in political
science: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and po-
litical methodology to provide students with a broad understanding of the discipline of political
science and the flexibility to focus their coursework to specific areas of interest.
While Political Science is one of the largest undergraduate majors at UNC, there is ample oppor-
tunity for students to receive individual attention and assistance as they pursue their chosen
course of study. Our faculty members are committed to creating interesting and relevant class-
room environments.
The Department of Political Science sponsors events during the academic year and sends out
a weekly email to majors with information about relevant events and internship and employ-
ment opportunities. Students can also apply to become a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the polit-
ical science honor society.

Tar Heels Travel Together! The Dept. of Public Safety encourag-
es UNC students and employees to use alternatives to driving
alone (take transit, carpool, vanpool, bike or walk). Fewer carsmake the campus safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Also, theres
safety in numbers. When more people bike and walk together,
theyre less likely to be hit by motorists. Ridesharing and tak-
ing the bus are other great ways that tar heels stick together.
Free ride-matching is provided t hrough Zimride.UNC.edu and
UNC.ShareTheRideNC.org. Also, Chapel Hill Transit and Point-
to-Point (P2P) Express is fare-free! The Commuter Alternative
Program (CAP) rewards employees and off-campus students
who choose to give up their on-campus parking permits and
use alternatives to commute. CAP members get discounts at
local restaurants and shops, as well as entries into prize draw-
ings. In addition, CAP members can join UNCs car-sharing
program, Zipcar, for just $10/year. Employees and students
who commute from outside of Chapel Hill can choose to get
$20/month for vanpooling, or
a free GoPass to ride TriangleTransit from Durham, Raleigh
and surrounding areas.

Southern Rail restaurant and bar rests com-
fortably between active local freight tracks
in the heart of Carrboro. This is Chapel Hill
native Mike Bensons third restaurant design,
coupling beautifully restored vintage railroad

houses the Tiger Room, serving coffee and
pastries daily with a full bar. Its the newest
addition to the sprawling complex of patios,
