When you encounter the passage

• Do not panic! Read the passage twice if you do not understand.

• Write down one main idea for each paragraph sets the context and gives you a gist of the passage.

Types of Questions to look out for

• Factual questions direct lift from passage– What, Who, How etc (in most cases)

• Inferential questions*– Why, Explain..

• In-Your-Own-Words questions*– In your own words..

• Combination of inferential and IYOW– Explain why…. in your own words

In-Your-Own-Words

• Highlight, from the passage, the words that you need to rephrase

• Replace them with your own words• String them into a coherent sentence

(without changing its meaning!)

In-Your-Own-Words

• Synonyms• Antonyms• Related phrases and groups of words

In-Your-Own-Words

• DO NOT USE ROOT WORDS FROM THE PASSAGE check, check, check!

Inferential Questions

• Higher level thinking skills required• Based on what you read (i.e. the

evidence), come to a conclusion about something to help you answer the question

• THE ANSWERS CANNOT BE LIFTED OFF THE PASSAGE!!

What does it mean to infer?

• I will show you a series of questions.

• Write down your answer before you go to the next slide.

Example 1After looking at her scores on her Maths paper, Jo sighed. “This is worse than I thought,” she mumbled to herself. All her efforts had gone to waste. All she wanted to now was to bury herself under her blanket and wallow in self-pity.

Her thoughts were disrupted by a chirpy voice.

“Hey Jo, do you want to go for lunch? We are thinking of trying out the new Japanese restaurant at the corner of the street,” Sammie asked.

“Sorry, I think I will give it a miss. I’m having a headache,” Jo stuttered, before rushing out of the classroom.

Question 1

• Why didn’t Jo join Sammie and her friends for lunch? (1 mark)

“Hi Junny, we are having a party at Zul’s house tonight. Want to come along?”

“Sorry, I think I will give the party a miss. I have to finish writing two essays, complete four stacks of English vocabulary worksheets and three summary practice worksheets,” Junny rattled off.

Example 3“Please grant me two weeks of leave during the June holidays. I haven’t had a break since I started working for you three years ago,” Helen pleaded with Ms Liao.

Helen had promised her son she would bring him to see the Great Barrier Reef in Australia since two years ago. Every June or December holidays, she found herself having to apologize to him for being unable to take him on the trip.

It would be different this year, she promised - again.

• Why was Helen desperate to have her leave granted in June? (2 marks)

working three years ago.• (x) She has not fulfilled her promise to her

• She had promised to take her son on a holiday to Australia two years ago, yet she had failed to fulfill it year after year (1). Hence, she was desperate to do so this June holidays as she did not want to disappoint her son again (1).

In conclusion.. To infer means to..

• Use available information and evidence to come to a conclusion!

• Ask yourself, “What does it (the evidence) imply?”
