The Death of Democracy in Venezuela

By Juan José Herrera

In view of the facts and events that have occurred recently here in Venezuela, as wellas the tolerance by powerful nations to “allow” this megalomaniac of Hugo Chavez toplow his course throughout Latin America, Africa and beyond the Middle East- withhis so called “Socialism 21st Century, ” which is a subterfuge of simple communism; the nation and its people are the recent victims of regime measures that violate the ruleof law, as well as human rights .

The recent attempt to expropriate more than 27,000 Hectares from private owners, must be with the hidden pretext of providing the Russians the most fertile land in

Venezuela. This land that produces bananas, beef, milk, cheese and plantains (atropical type of banana used as a food staple that provides 40% of red beef proteins),{in} a joint venture with a Venezuelan investor, who still is not known to us.

IRAN CUBA

This has caused the most irate response by many Venezuelans in more than one state, creating solidarity to confront the regime in its path to eliminate productive land inprivate hands, to be passed into the Venezuelan Government administration whichalways ends up in shambles.

We have seen it with the sugar cane fields, cattle ranches and plantations like “La Carolina ,” Agroisleña,Hato* El Frio, Hato* el Charcote and quite a few more. They produce nothing now, since either theyhave eaten the farm animals within it or commercialized what was left; not taking into account breedingmore offspring. This conflict must simply be a ramification of a deal made by Chavez in his recent tripto Russia.

What is more alarming is the complacent or genuflecting Chavista National Assembly, that is violatingthe present Venezuelan National Constitution in a lame duck attitude after the Chavistas lost a greatdeal of seats in the new National Assembly to be installed on January 6, 2011.

They have given Hugo Chavez dictatorial rights to legislate by decree, and what is worse they havechanged the Assembly floor rules for debate, silencing the opposition by only allowing them to debatefor 10 minutes only- once on an issue, and not to exceed more than two hours of debate on any issue.Too, they will only convene once a week when the president of said assembly decides.

Some democracy we are having, thanks to world tolerance of powerful nations in doing nothing to stopthis insanity.

There is the elimination of University autonomy in which the professors will be appointed by the regimeand not by contest by various faculty members, as well as the Dean of studies, throwing down collectivebargaining of many decades of democratic agreements between the university and the faculty members.

Far worse is the designation by the “Communist regime” of H ugo Chavez as to what courses are to bestudied and where- moving certain degree studies to another state if it suits them. What also sets analarming concern is the law pertaining to “ Leyes Comunales, ” or communal laws, which has minimumage requirement of 15 year olds within them, which will handle state and municipal budgets and otherschool zone administrations.

RUSSIA

Any similarity with a throwback into the movie “ The Planet of the Apes” is a mere coincidence here. I

only wonder if George Orwell´s ”Animal Farm” comes close to what we are witnessing here inVenezuela or is it like he wrote it that we are now living it in the flesh?

Annexed/attached are some interesting links that explain more in detail what we are facing here. I donot know for how long I will remain free to write out the truth to the world, since the complacentChavistic National Assembly passed a law regulating the Internet in which we cannot say anythingnegative about the government or its officials. They want us to become disciples of Josef Goebbels,“dressing up ” this mess or else.
