The Deciduous Forests of the World

• Temperate deciduous forests are an area with a high density of trees

• Temperate deciduous forests are located primarily in the eastern half of the united states, Canada, Europe, china, and Japan

• The temperate forests which are home to sugar maples are commonly tapped for their sap, which is used to make syrup.

Places to Visit

• One place to visit is the Great Smoky Mountains a mountain range along the Tennessee – North Carolina border. Most visited national park in the United States.

• Olympic National Park is another great place to go to experience the Temperate Forests. Its located in Port-Angeles Washington.Its home to giant western Hemlocks, Douglas-Firs and Sitka spruce tress. It receives over 12 feet of rain a year.

many different animals that live in their forests.

Some animals are only found in these forests:

Carnivores have been largely eliminated through the deliberate effort of humans but should include timber wolves, mountain lions, and bobcats.

Plants•Deciduous forests consist of trees that do not bear cones.

They contain seeds that dropped on the nearby forest floor. These trees tend to lose their leaves once each year when the weather turns cold. Since they lose their leaves, sunlight can reach the ground and plants can grow underneath them. Grasses and flowering plants grow in these forests.

• Many things affect this biome’s climate: – From the large masses of air that move

through the Biome– During the summer the sun is out much

longer, which causes longer warmer days 

Common Facts About This Biome• The average amount of rainfall in the forests are

about 30-60 inches a year.

• The average temperature is 50°F.

• In the wintertime, December through February, snow covers the ground.

• Winters can be well below 0°F.

• Summers are mild usually average around 70°F.

• Humidity in these forests is high from 60%-80%.
