“Sharing Our Vision – Strengthening Our Society”

Merle’s Missive

“How do you identify someone who needs encouragement? That person is breathing.” Truett Cathey

Why? Why do we bother? Is it of any use? Does anyone care?Discouragement: The state of being deprived of confidence and courage. Like a dandelion in my newly planted bed of snapdragons, the feeling of discouragement creeps upon us and causes us to feel that our efforts are use-less.I perceived a feeling of discouragement in some of the annual reports from chapter presidents, but when examining the positive things our chapters are involved with, I found no basis for discouragement. Abraham Lincoln said, “Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed.”So, how can we rid ourselves of the strangling feeling of discouragement? First, look at the big picture of our Society – its mission, vision and purposes – and look at our contributions toward fulfilling those purposes. We are making strides in our service to early career educators, prospective future educational leaders, support of personal and professional opportunities for women and on and on…Yes, we have work to do to attract new members, find solutions to financial difficulties, develop innovative, interesting programs for our meetings that members will want to take advantage of and attend. The major issues we face need not overshadow our accomplishments. Focus on our strengths – our faithful members who assume leadership roles, those who ask, “What can I do?”, those who volunteer, those who assist without being asked. Include every member in planning the chapter activities and assign responsibilities to each. There are those who would like to contribute, but are reluctant to speak up.“An automobile goes nowhere efficiently unless it has a quick, hot spark to ig-nite things; to set the cogs of the machine in motion. So I try to make every player on my team feel he’s the spark keeping our machine in motion.” Knute RochneLet’s try to make every member feel she is the ‘spark’ that keeps our chapter moving forward!Be positive and look at those things that do not work out to our satisfaction as isolated incidents to either be discarded or revamped to make them successful. Encouragement: The act of giving courage, hope or confidence; to embolden, hearten; to give support to, be favorable to; foster, help.

Be an encourager.

Mu State Emergency Fund

Sharon Wallen, Chair

Mu State sisters, your support of our state's Emergency Fund was very generous throughout bien-nium 2013-2015. The purpose of this fund is to assist members with $250 each whenever they face loss or damages due to natural disasters.

All Districts found creative ways to contribute to Mu State's Emer-gency Fund. At each Mu State Fall Workshop in 2013 and 2014, membership supported the fund with over $1,000 collected each year. Our state's reserve funds for emergencies saw just over a 20% increase of the bienni-um's starting balance. Various chapters around Florida made donations to this relief fund, too. Rest assured, no penny was unnoticed. Over the biennium, we assisted two DKG members in Pensacola thanks to your gener-osity.

State Treasurer Beverly Staggs moved the account from one banking institution to another yielding greater interest for our funds. Also, Beverly is always updating, informing, and keep-ing me in the loop regarding Mu State's Emergency Fund growth and payouts. Beverly’s support is greatly appreciated.

Has your attendance at meet-ings been increasing? Have you been inviting guests to come to every meeting? If they couldn’t make the first meet-ing you invited them to attend, did you ask them to come to the next meeting? Have you looked at the list of mem-bers who have not renewed their membership? Have you been inviting them to attend your meetings? Have you been looking outside the box for teachers in non-traditio-na teaching situations? Your answer should be “yes” to all of these questions. It is important that all members be aware they are a part of the membership committee whether or not their name is listed on the commit-tee. Look for guests to invite to your meetings, but don’t stop there. Make sure when you have guests in attendance that they are introduced and made to feel welcome. Give them a reason to want to come back and be a part of our Society. Have you been making plans to attend the Mu State Convention April 17-19, 2015, in Lake Mary at the Marriott? At this conven-tion your chapter president will be presented along with the other chapter presidents. It is

nice when there are members from the chapter present to give her their support. This will also be when we have the elec-tion of the Mu State Officers for 2015-2017. All members present will be able to vote, so bring a car load and fill up a hotel room. Are you aware the Southeast Regional Conference will be in Savannah, Georgia, from July 15 - 18, at The Westin Savan-nah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa? This will be another opportunity to fill a hotel room with DKG members. Do you know that if you an-swered “yes” to all of these questions you are doing great? Keep up the good work, and we will see our membership in Florida increasing! I’ll be look-ing forward to seeing you at the meetings. Let me know if there is any-thing I can do to help you.

Strategic Action Planning

Barbara Van Diepen, Consultant ([email protected])

The SAP continues to rise. We are closer to reaching our goal, but we need every chapter to send us their SAP as soon as possible. It is exciting every time our emails indicate another SAP is being received. Our deadline to receive acknowledgement at Convention is March 15, 2015. Chapters which have sent us a copy of their Strategic Action Plan will be recog-nized at the Mu State Convention and will receive a certificate and gift from the committee.

The Mu State goal is 100% parti-cipation. If you haven’t sent your SAP to us yet, you still have time. We need your help to reach our goal.Send it to:

Gerry Hacker1216 Cordoba Court, Dunedin, FL 34698

or [email protected]

Wouldn’t it be great to send a letter or an article to International representing Mu State and our ac-complishment? Please send your SAP today. It can be very simple:one or two goals and a sentence or two suggesting ways you could reach them. Your help is much appreciated, and you will find it to be most beneficial for your chapter.

Function Planner

A “function” for Florida attendees of the 2015 Southeast Regional Conference (SERC) in Savannah, Georgia is in the planning stage. A minimal charge will be set to help cover cost of finger foods.

Invitation and more information

coming soon!

We hope all attendees will join us at this “function” (probably Friday afternoon) for a brief program at which we will acknowledge our 2013 – 2015 State President and welcome our 2015 – 2017 State President. As registrations for the conference are made, par-ticipants will receive a personal invitation, and one will be posted on our Florida Mu State website.

From Wikipedia:

Savannah is the oldest city in the U.S. state of Georgia and is the county seat of Chatham County. Established in 1733, the city of Savannah became the British colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia.

Siemer, Vicki Simms, and Diane Scheuerer from Delta Eta. The program was on membership – Retaining, Reinstating, and Recruiting which included raps and Annie’s Calling skit. This was followed by a silent auction of “sweets for your sweetheart” and luncheon. Beta Nu Chap-ter members gather below.

Beta Omega Chapter held its 17th Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on March 1st. The

purpose was to raise money for the Take Stock In Children/Doorways Scholarship Fund. In 1996, Beta Omega began its quest to sponsor this schol-arship awarded to Pinellas county students whose families lack the resources to afford a college education for their children. Special thanks to our sponsor, Patchington clothing store, for helping make our fashion show a huge success!

Alpha Omega Chapter in Palm Beach County is proud of Isabel (Izzy) Parado who was honored as a semi-finalist for the State of Florida by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). Izzy is a counselor and the coordinator at Okeeheelee Communi-ty Middle School. She was formally invited to travel to Washington to attend a Gala dinner and a presentation at the White House. We applaud Izzy’s devotion and fortitude in her continuing work with our students and parents.

Hot off the press! Congratu-lations, Myrna Santos from Beta Alpha Chapter! Her second published book, “An Introvert in an Extrovert World: Essays on the Quiet Ones,”

is an academic anthology now available at Amazon.

Two Beta Alpha Chapter members presented at the South Atlantic Modern Lan-guage Association Conference (SAMLA). Beta Alpha Chapter President Myrna Santos pic-tured above and Dr. Marlisa Santos pictured below, mother and daughter, chaired and presented on dif-ferent panels at the same pres-tigious conference in Atlanta. Marlisa was on the film panel, and her presentation was titled “Continuous Suffering: Noirish Sensibilities in Internal Affairs and The Departed.” Myrna’s paper was on fostering the humanities: “Preserving the Humanities through a Universal Language and Universal Com-munication.”

Dear DKG women,

Please consider entering the 2015 Betty Thornton Arts & Crafts Exhibit at the upcoming Mu State Spring Convention held April 17 -19, in Lake Mary, FL. The Educational Excellence Committee is hosting this event named after and in honor of a long time supporter of the arts. We are CELEBRATING our cre-ative spirit and acknowledging the talent that so many ladies possess in our MU State organization. We really would love to hear any musical performance live or on DVD played during the exhibition!

Purpose:To celebrate members who participate in the arts

This event will give members a forum to display their works. Share your talents with your DKG fellow members! All member participants will receive a certificate of participation. If you have any questions, please email Joann Higgins, Educational Excellence Program Planning liaison, at gammanuhig-gins@yahoo. The registration deadline has been extended to April 3, and all you need to do is just complete it and send to me ASAP.

Savannah... Check It Off Your Bucket List

Endless possibilities will be found at the Southeast Regional Conference July 15-18, 2015. The venue, Westin Resort Hotel and Spa, is in the heart of the Savannah River District. The Westin has Southern charm and incredible river views. The property is unique and sports a championship golf course and spa and members staying at the Westin will receive discounts to one or both!

Explore Savannah’s 22 picturesque squares and parks which are part of General Oglethorpe’s original design for the city. Many have been the inspiration and setting for several movies. Quaint restaurants, shops, galleries, museums, and historic homes are waiting for you to tour. Make your own history in Sa-vannah as you step back in time nearly three centu-ries to one of the oldest and largest historic landmark districts in the country. Enjoy dynamic keynote speakers such as Polly Le-tofsky. She richly details her journey by foot across 4 continents. You’ll also discover new partnerships and possibilities in DKG.

Embrace the “faces of change” throughout the conference, beginning with opening night. Surprises abound as the conference will be like a box of choc-olates! Opportunities will be around every corner to advance member connections.

Engage with dynamic breakout sessions that em-brace Dr. Schmid’s theme, “85 Years and Beyond: Advancing Key Women Educators for Life.” Strands will focus on the DKG Society, personal and profes-sional growth, technology, and 21st century learning.

Experience DKG and be a part of the Society at this regional conference. Make new friends, connections, and experience the change that is in the air!
