A Letter From Tke PresidentMusical Theater
Welcome ioStueeney Todd, the -Srci production of our 89th
Season! We are thrilled to present this classic Stephen
Sondheim show, one of the series of collaboralions between
Sondheim and Hal Prince. As it happens, this was the first
Sondheim show produced in our Franklin Street Theater -
for our last Sondheim you have to go back to Side by Sideby Sondheim in March 2010 (which was a review - for the
last regular show you have to go back to Assassins, another
year prior).
There are so many great things happening at SLOC right now! Thanks to some very
generous patrons, dedicated volunteers, and a little bit of luck, you will see a number
of changes around the theater in the next couple of months. First, 1 know many in
the audience will be happy to hear that a generous donation will allow us to replace
all of the seating in the theater. These chairs have lasted us more than 40 years,
but it is finally time to retire them. Second, we will soon improve the visibility ofthe theater's "front door" when we install a new lighted marquee. Finally, SLOC was
chosen from hundreds of entries of the "Let KREIOS Light You r Stage" contest, which
provides us with a dozen new energy-efficient LED work lights, that will be used toimprove the safety and visibility of the stage during rehearsal and set construction,
and also provide more pleasant, uniform, and easier to control lighting in the house
for the safety and enjoyment of our audiences. Look for all these to be in place before
the end of the season - we can't wait to share them with you.
In another bit of good news, we were honored to learn that last February's production
of South Pacific earned a spot on the Schenectady Gazette's Best of Theater 2015list. We shared the list not only with some of the region's best community theater
productions, but also with professional and touring shows, and regional theater
festivals, so it is a very special recognition. This is the second yeai' in a row that
SLOC has earned a place on that list, which is a te.stament to talent that we are
able to attract and the many hours of hard work that so many people put in to bring
quality theater to you.
The 2015-2016 season is racing by, and it will soon be time to announce the
productions of our 90th anniversary season. Stay tuned, because with think you are
going to love it.
Enjoy the show!

SLQC A Letter From Tke DirectorMiisica! Theater
The thing that has always been so distinctive about Sweeney
Todd for me is that 1 have never been able to identify just one
thing that makes it great, The storytelling is on point, the
characters are well-developed, the structure is solid, and the
music is beyond compare. There is so much to work with and be
fascinated by, so many aspects to explore. Not surprising that it
won 8 Tony Awards when it took Broadway by storm in 1979.
My first experience with this amazing musical thriller came
relatively late in my theatre education - the 2005 Broadway Revival, starring Michael
Cerveris and Patti LuPone. 1 became obsessed. 1 immediately purchased the cast
recording and listened until 1 knew all of the lyrics by heart. 1 had just directed my
first play and had completely fallen In love with directing, the holistic process of
mounting a production. So it only made sense WvidSiceeney Todd was quickly added
to my bucket list of directing projects. I could not have been more thi'illed to discover
last February that 1 would be given the honor of directing .SWcncy Todd here at
Schenectady Light Opera Company.
Early on in my research, 1 was intrigued by the history as well. The original story was
born as a penny dreadful. The Siring of Pearb, in 1846 and was primarily experienced
as staged melodramas throughout the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. It has
morphed from literature to silent film to the Broadway stage; there was even a
ballet version, performed by the Royal Ballet in 1959. It was, however, the adaptation
written by Christopher Bond in 1973 that eventually inspired Stephen Sondheim to
recreate Sweeney Todd as a musical. The result is arguably the most complex score
of Sondheim's long career.
To say it is a pleasure for me to welcome you to this performance would be an
understatement. Over the last several months, it has been a gift to work with some of
the most talented performers and designers In this area. A special thanks to Joanne
Dame Peal and Peter Caracappa, my producers, for their support and friendship. To
Michael Lotano, our music director, who drilled our cast on the most difficult music
in musical theatre, thank you! And to Chris Stefani, your artistic vision, support and
open mind have been Invaluable, a most heartfelt thanks. Cast and Crew-you all
worked so hard for this; have a fantastic time out there!
And to you, our audience, I sincerely hope that you enjoy this performance as much
as wc have enjoyed preparing it for you,
