Happy Birthday to the USA!!!! It is truly hard to believe that this year is half over. July the 4th is just 2 weeks away, as I

write this. Another indicator is that the July issue of Connecting Threads just hit my mailbox. The garden is just about ready to start picking and I REALLY want some fresh tomatoes, barbeque, watermelon, and boiled peanuts!!!

Your Board has been hard at work in reviewing the new proposed by-laws. This proposal will arrive in your in-box in just a few days. Please review and make whatever notes you feel are needed. We will be discussing and hopefully voting on them at the July meeting. Please direct any comments regarding additions or subtractions straight to me at [email protected]. That way we can work on getting everything consolidated for discussion during the general meeting.

Plans are also being made for programs and demos for next year. Any ideas that you have regarding them you can send to Donna Royson and me. We both keep a list of ideas for the future.I look forward to seeing all of you at the July meeting. Until then:Keep your stitches even,Joyce Greer-President

Programs

July 7 will give us a chance to learn from three of our talented members. We will divide into three groups and rotate every twenty minutes:

Beth Karr will demo her joy of open seams and precision pinning, which can be used for many projects

Judy Carroll will demonstrate both sizes of the Strip and Twist Ruler with hints the book doesn’t tell you. Included at no extra charge: how to use your leftover pieces so there is vir-tually no waste.

Nancy Aydlett has tips that your long arm quilter would like you to know. Many of these tips will help home quilters.

We have scheduled two workshops for the summer. The instructors are not charging us for their time. This is a wonderful opportunity to take an interesting class and support your guild at the same time. Our workshops and programs make up the budget for next year’s programs.

July 12th: Depends on How you See It class with Anita Bowen, Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, 9:00 – 4:00, $40 includes pattern and template

August 23: Machine Applique with Pat Whittle, Green Hill Baptist Church, 1734 Augusta Road, West Columbia, 9:00 – 4:00, $30 includes batting and stabilizer. Purchase pattern at Patchabilities.com. There are many patterns to choose from.

Our August 4 Program will be a trunk show and retail therapy with Quilter’s Gallery. You will see them at the Quilting and Knitting Expo, Jamil Shrine Temple, June 27 and 28.

September 8 is an important fund raiser for the guild. Members will purchase a table for $10.00, or $5.00 for half a table. You have the opportunity to sell your What Was I Thinking items or oops I bought too much of that fabric, two of the same rulers, or two of the same patterns and any other items. You are responsible for having change and must take anything that you don’t sell back home with you. We will also have a table with member made and donated items: food, quilted, craft, knitted, crocheted, etc. This is fun way for the guild to make money and we need your support.

REMINDER! November is the Challenge Reveal. We will have ribbons for participants and prizes for the winners

Demos @ 6:30pm

No demo this month due to the highly demonstrative program!Come as early as 6 to work on pin basting charity quilts and socialize.

Block of the Month for July

Based on a block from this book: Tula Pink’s City Sampler: 100 modern quilt blocks / Tula Pinkhttp://smile.amazon.com/Tula-Pinks-City-Sampler-Modern/dp/1440232148/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1399222731&sr=8-1All these are 6 inch blocks, so I had to resize it. SEE email attachment for sizes of pieces to make this as a 12.5” (unfinished) block.

Devine Quilters’ Guild Challenge 2014: Inspiration from Paintings

Participants are to take inspiration from the paintings listed on the slip of paper they draw from the basket. Take the colors, or forms, or whatever catches your imagination about the painting you are given and make it into a quit.

The quilt must measure at least 20 inches on any side and no more than 48 inches on any side. The quilts are due at the November meeting. I am very excited to see the results of everyone’s inspiration.

I will have more slips of paper with paintings listed at the next few meetings in case you did not attend the February meeting. Try a new technique, stretch your creativity, but most of all Have Fun! ---Pam

Update: Francine Gugger is now Francine Antoinette-Sterle

Charity Quilts Update  Thus far this year, we have donated 45 quilts and we have 20-30 quilts underway.  Our goal is 80 so we need to keep bringing them in.  Thank you most generous Quilters!

Based on the speakers at last months' meeting we know the quilts are appreciated at many levels by our 3 charities: Palmetto Children's Shelter, the VA Hospital System and the Lexington Extended Care.

By the way, we recently received an email from a daughter of a recently deceased cancer patient.  She had high praise for our program:  The quilt her mother received from us brought great joy.  She plans to donate fabric she has as thanks and to "keep us going".

What is needed? We have 11 quilts ready for quilting.  Most are just 40"x 60" or so.  Very doable on most home sewing machines.  Please see me at the meeting or feel free to call any time.We need more quilt top kits - so let's have a gathering:  I'd love to have a group come over to my house and we can brain storm best-use of the fabrics we already have and get the kits done. We already have Altered Rails, Split/Disappearing 9 Patch and Scrap Squares Patterns.  Anyone with suggestions for additional patterns or cutting process please let me know. I will propose 2 dates the night of our next meeting and have sign-up sheets.  Either way, please contact me if you are interested. I can serve healthy fruit or some mean brownies.

Any batting needed for charity Quilts?  Just call or email me with the size you need and I will bring it to the meeting or arrange to get it to you.

Mea Culpas!   It is difficult for me to keep up with who has done what aspect of quilting to which quilt.  Once a quilt top is completed I try to track it and I keep a piece of paper pinned to it.  I will be 'improving' that form to help insure I have everyone's name that has assisted with it.  I also am trying to do a better job of making sure that 1) anyone who wants a receipt gets one from the organization it goes to, and 2) that it goes to the organization of your choice. --Ann
