Dexter Daze 2010 met all ofthe benchmarks for success

this year despite a scorchingFriday and a humid and rainySaturday.

The two-day event was anextravaganza of music, arts,crafts, food and odds and endsprovided by local businesses.

Jessica Cox and Anne MarieTavares of Dancers Edge werea couple of the volunteers help-ing out this year.

We typically do well by wordof mouth, but several peoplehave been by, and were expect-ing folks to participate in ourcommunity dance classes,Tavares said.

In the next tent over, BrandonLockman was giving inexpen-sive board breaking lessons for$2 to $5 donations.

Weve had about 50 peoplein our tent, Lockman said onFriday.

Dexter Rotary volunteer andDexter Community SchoolsBoard of Education trusteeJulie Schumacher was oneof several volunteers sellingtickets for the Rotarys yearlyplayhouse raffle, in whichparticipants can win a smallplayhouse replica of a villagebuilding.

This years playhouse was areplica of a residential buildingon Dover and Fourth streets.

Our goal was to have $500and we had $3,000 by Fridaymorning, Schumacher said.

Federal officials are inves-

tigating the cause of a planecrash near McGrath, Alaska onAug. 13.

John and Delores DollyGraybill, formerly of Dexter,were killed in the accidentwhen their Piper PA-18 crashedin the mountains.

According to a press release,Alaska State Troopers werenotified of the crash around11 p.m. Aug. 12. Another pilotin the area reported the crash,and the U.S. National Guardlaunched a search shortly aftermidnight.

The love of the outdoors and

adventure were a part of theireveryday life experiences,Lynda Boham, a family friendsaid.

The Graybills spent the earlyyears of their marriage andraised their children in Dexter.The family moved to Alaska

in 1968, and John became oneof the finest bush pilots in theworld.

Johns compassion for oth-ers and the great state of Alaskais what made him the remark-able man he became, Bohamsaid. His love for his wife Dollyand her love for him was a sight

few will ever forget. His love forhis children and grandchildrenwas brighter than the northernlights in the state he loved somuch.

For years the Dexter Kiwanis

Clubs annual Dexter Dazeraffle has been a big draw forthe community, and this yearwas no different.

Kiwanians sold 1,800 of their3,000 grand prize raffle ticketsleading up to Saturdays draw-ing.

This years grand prize$10,000 winner was Dave Agnew

of Elmhurst, Ill.The second prize $1,000 win-ner was Larry Brennan ofDexter.

The third prize $500 winnerwas Dale Boychuck of Dexter.Boychuck was the only win-ner of the three present at thetime of the drawing, and wasawarded an extra $500.

Brennan said this was thefirst year he participated in theraffle.

My wife purchased the ticketand we were surprised whenour friends called us to tell usthat we had won, he said.

Brennan said he and his wifedid not attend the festival thisyear due to a back injury he suf-fered last week.

We usually go every year,

but with all the nerve pills the

doctor put me on, we decided itwas best to just stay home, hesaid.

Though he wasnt eligiblefor the extra $500 incentive forbeing present at the raffle, hesaid he is content with the prize.

Every little bit helps intodays economy, Brennan said.

Kiwanis member JoeScheuring said the grand prizeand third place tickets werepurchased during the DexterDaze weekend, while the secondplace ticket was bought off of afamily pack of tickets the weekbefore the festival.

Last year, Dexter resi-dent Janet McDole won the

$10,000 grand prize with a fam-ily pack ticket purchase fromBuschs two months before thedrawing.

Scheuring said ticket saleswere down this year comparedto recent years.

Our sales were down onFriday. Saturday we movedthe raffle back an hour, whichgave us about 10 percent moretime in the day to sell tickets,he said. Even with the timechange, we sold exactly thesame amount of tickets onSaturday as we did last year.

Scheuring said Kiwanismembers sold $5,000 worth oftickets on Saturday, $3,700 worthof tickets on Friday and $8,000worth of tickets in the monthsleading up to Dexter Daze.

Nobody registered to runagainst Dexter Village Councilincumbents Paul Cousins,Jim Carson and Donna Fisher,whose four-year terms are uplater this year.

The deadline to file applica-tions with the Scio Townshipclerks office to be added tothe November ballot was 4 p.m.Aug. 10.

Its a nice feeling thatpeople must feel confident thatthe council is doing the rightthing, said Carson, adding

that the council is currentlyhandling arelativelylargenumber

of issues including discussionof a general obligation bond,fire and municipal facilities, theUnited Methodist RetirementCommunities tree replacementfund and management of thewastewater treatment plant.
