29 April 2016 Issue 14/2016 The DHS Herald Durban High School has produced some fine leaders in the past and here the following come to mind immediately: Gavyn Arthur (Mayor of London), John Oxley (SA Ambassador to Australia), Major Edwin Swales (Military), Chris Seabrooke (Business) and Hashim Amla (SA Test Cricket Captain), etc to name a few. There are many, many more and in an internet article a few years ago we were ranked number one in SA in terms of producing leaders. I have no doubt that with what I have seen here at DHS in my time, this legacy will continue. This week we announced the Cultural Captains but we also have the Prefects, the RCL, Captains of Sport teams and Class Captains. Last week our Grade 8s attended the first of our Outdoor Leadership programmes at Spirit of Adventure. The opportunities are there and all we need is for boys to step up and grab these opportunities. Two definitions of leadership that I have mentioned before and that I have come across are; 1. “The action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this.” 2. “The process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.” From the Head Master’s Desk The key elements mentioned are “leading a group”, “ability” and “support of others.” There are a number of groups or teams that are ably led by our boys. Sometimes boys do have the ability to lead but they do not make themselves available or they are never given the opportunity to lead. Very important is whether a leader can inspire others to follow him or her. We all know about the three leadership styles namely; authoritarian, democratic and laissez–faire. A good leader must have the ability to use all three of these styles. As a school it is our challenge to identify, guide, nurture and create opportunities for boys to develop leadership skills. The onus is also on our boys to show what they are capable of and to use the opportunities on offer at the school. Mistakes they will make and hopefully they will learn from these mistakes. It is also important that these leaders are prepared to serve. They are not there for the glory or material rewards. Our Rugby boys are in Port Elizabeth where they will play two matches with the last one being the main game on Monday against the hosts Grey High School. I want to wish them well for both their matches. Grade 8 Leadership Trip to Spirit of Adventure The Outdoor Leadershipprogramme offered by our schoolis indeed what sets it apart fromother schools in our country. Theenjoyment and value of outdoorexperiential learning cannot beunderestimated, and our Grade 8shave really embraced this fromday one when I addressed themabout their campout. Theenthusiasm and energy that thisevent sparked carried over intothe Spirit of Adventurecomponent. Participation was atan extremely high level of 97% andthis made organizing thisexcursion an absolute pleasure. Interms of communication the gradewas briefed and this was followedup with individual class visits tonurture the enthusiasm and dealwith the many questions – theanswer to some being “you willfind out when you get there”. The boys exhibited great maturityin dealing with issues and makingsure they were equipped for theadventure ahead of them. Thegrade was divided into two groupsand their camp took place overtwo and a half days at in theShongweni Dam and GameReserve. The 1700 hectare reserveis approximately 40km fromDurban and contains buffalo, rhino, giraffe, a variety ofantelope and 200 species of birds. On arrival the boys werewelcomed by the SOA facilitatorsand briefed on the “Survivor”style structure of the course. Inorder to divide the groups fairlythe first activity, a road race, definitely sorted out the boys, fortunately the weather was more

forgiving than that experiencedduring the grade 9 course. Once intheir groups the boys enjoyed awholesome lunch and readiedthemselves for the afternoonrotation of Assault Course & SnakePit, Rock Climbing, and the Canoe& Tunnel Race. Although mostactivities attract points some, such as the climbing and abseilare there purely for theexperience and to prepare theboys for their Grade 9 coursewhere things are turned up anotch or two. After a busy afternoon the boysdisplayed their culinary skills bypreparing tasty (in most cases)chicken potjie over a fire. I amglad to report that on the wholethe boys were quite capable whenit came to cutting vegetables andfollowing the simple cookinginstructions. After dinner the boys played“Stalk the Lantern” and finallyafter hot chocolate and biscuitswere off to bed. On day 2 the boys were up earlyfor breakfast and then had a shortpresentation on STAR leadershiptheory. This theory was carefullylinked to those activities that theyhad already done and those thatthey were about to do; as well asshowing how the concepts fittedinto the classroom and on thesport’s field. Day 2’s rotation included the everpopular Raft Build & Race, andAbseiling the Dam wall. In thelatter activity the boys were takenout of the safe zone and

encouraged to overcome theirfears and develop confidence inthemselves and the instructors. In the evening the boys enjoyedtasty macaroni bolognaise andthen the camp area was filledwith lots of excitement as thenight activity Mini Olympicsbegan. Day 3 dawned with a quite wearybut enthusiastic group boysgetting up for breakfast. On thefinal day the boys complete theelements of the rotation that theystill had to do and also enjoyedkayak races. Once all theactivities were concluded thepoints were tallied to work outthe winning teams. I would like to thank the staff ofDHS and SOA who assisted inmaking this event a great success.I would also like to thank theparents who had faith in what weoffer at DHS and entrusted theirsons to us for the duration of thecourse. “Walk into the woods. Keepwalking. Walk off tracks. Do notplan where you are going. Takewhatever directions appeal in themoment. Keep walking. When(without realizing) you are lost, look into the eyes of the dragon, then your adventure begins.”

Eu4ria : Matric Fundraiser Friday 11 April 2016 was not anordinary set up in the hall. Thefundraising event incorporated acompletely new concept. Anamazing line up of performerspreceded the Fashion Show andthe evening ended with NicholasSingleton Dropping the Beat. Live Art was done by an old boy,Luke Molver aka Billy Pineapples,Nivesh Rawatlal and currentGrade 11 learner; ShivanDelamoney. Standup comedy was eloquentlydelivered by Guy Kwande, one ofDurban’s up and comingperformers who had theaudience in stitches. His performance was closelyfollowed by Fluffy Not Fat; arock/pop band that featuresregularly at Zaks and JackRabbits. Musical items rendered byLujabe and his crew, T Shabalalaand his crew, Mr Pete Skevingtonand Jo-Kim (another old boy)were really entertaining. Llyod Mtshali displayed his talentfor poetry with a wonderfulrendition. Raheem Kemet a poet/rapperwas simply amazing. His dynamicpersonality and rapport with theaudience was phenomenal. Lex LaFoy ended the eveningwith her mind blowing

performance. She can certainlybelt out those high notes!!! The Fashion show segment wasagain choreographed expertly byShaun Sander, owner of MobileModel Management. The youngmen and ladies gave thissegment their all and gave creditto the brands which theyrepresented. It is always good to watch ouracademically and sport inclinedlearners get out of their comfortzones and take to the spotlightof a different kind. This is anexcellent fun way of raisingfunds for the Matric Dance, which takes place on 30 Julythis year. Our models looked likesupermodels as they took to theramp in the various garments sokindly lent to us by variousFashion Stores in and aroundDurban. We even had garmentsdelivered to us from Cape Town! The showstopper had to be, onceagain, the DHS staff modellingsegment. Thank you to the staffthat embraced the themeMusicians Through the Ages andtook to the ramp in style. A special thank you to PrevenReddy and his team from RedBox Productions for photographyand videography. Thank you toall our sponsors for the evening.

Extra Mural Results DHS strode to a comfortable 40-10victory at home over Clifton onSaturday. This score line hasbecome a trend in recent yearsand the DHS outfit convincinglyran away with this game fromearly on. The DHS team would be slightlydisappointed in their overallperformance as they spurned afew opportunities by forcing toomany 50/50 passes in the game. However, the Horseflies turned onthe style when ball did go to hand, running in some magnificent triesin the process. The try fest started early asPhendulani Buthelezi and ChamZondeki scored within the first 5minutes of the game. Manythought the scoreline would be alot more but the Clifton boysrallied together and produced aneffort they could be proud of.They put together some solidpieces of play and managed to geta try on the day. It is clear that DHS is fastbecoming the neutral’s team towatch as they play an excitingbrand of rugby based on quick ballretention and shifting the ballquickly into space. The rotationalroles of halfbacks Sanele Nohambaand Gert Coetzee give them avariety of different decisionmakers on the ball at all times. They are also a threat on counterattack with fullback Cham Zondekiproviding much of the impetus. The interlinking between the DHSforwards on the day wasinconsistent but when it did comeoff they managed to gain seriousinroads into the Clifton defence, scoring tries through hooker,Kamvelihle Fatyela, two forwinger Asande Chonco, SaneleNohamba and tighthead, Tiaan DeJager. DHS will be happy with thedominant win which stands themin good stead as the make theirway down to Port Elizabeth this

weekend to take part in the GreyHigh Rugby festival. The 1st XV play IthembelihleComprehensive High School onSaturday 30 April at 14h30 at GreyHigh in Port Elizabeth. On 14 March 2016, twenty one Grade 11 learners completed their seven weeks of training in Leadership, Communication and Public Speaking skills and a formal graduation dinner was held in the AJ Human Room. DHS staff, parents and invited guests were in attendance to witness these fine young men graduate. This training was run by the uMhlanga Toastmasters Club, which is affiliated to Toastmasters International. The training requires that each Grade 11 learner prepare and present two speeches on topics that they have picked, as well as present two impromptu speeches, evaluate both impromptu and prepared speeches, whilst running and co-ordinating the meeting themselves. They learn skills necessary to hold the role of Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Sergeant-at-Arms, Secretary, Timekeeper, Impromptu Topics Master, Fine/Jokes Master and

Chief Evaluator. These roles were held by the learners at the final dinner and they fulfilled them successfully. At this dinner each learner who had completed the above received an internationally recognized certificate from the uMhlanga Toastmasters Club. The following graduates received first place in the following categories: Prepared Speech: Matthew Henley Evaluation: Jarod Naidoo Impromptu Speech: Katlego Ncala

These gentlemen who came first in the above categories have progressed to the Semi Finals and Finals in the KZN Region. The evening was not only about the speeches as two of our music learners, Akil Majnadas and Ntokozo Nsibande, entertained us with beautiful music and songs between speeches. This night was a night of speeches, good music, tasty food, a great company of people and a tastefully decorated venue. The graduates will cherish this moment for many years to come.
