Commentaries by Trijang Dorje Chang & Geshe

 Lam-rimpa

Compiled & Translated by Lama Zopa Rinpoche Many people ask, What can I do to make my life

meaningful? — especially when facing problems and

depression. One answer is to take the Eight

Mahayana Precepts.

These precepts are a set of eight vows that are takenbefore dawn in a short, simple ceremony and kept

for twenty-four hours. No matter whether you are

ordained or lay, once you have received the

transmission, you can take the precepts at any time

for as long as you choose.

These Mahayana Precepts enable you to live in the

essence of pure moral conduct, and since you take

them with the strong motivation of cherishing and

wishing to benefit others, their value is

immeasurable. Taking these precepts is a powerful

and effective way for you to build, maintain andincrease deep propensities for spiritual practice and

attainment and thus is a profound method for giving

meaning to your precious human life.

This book is a practical guide. It explains the

benefits of the vows and the meaning of the

ceremony for receiving them, and for easy reference

contains the ceremony itself, written out clearly for

regular use.

Unfortunately this book is out of print. A new and revised edition has been published by the FPMT

Education Department and is available through

the Foundation Store.

Those who want to accomplish their own goals

and those of others must find happiness, but ifyou don‘t abandon harming others—which alsomeans harming yourself—you can never findhappiness.

Whatever you do, you do in order to be happy,

but in reality negative actions create the causefor you to suffer; thus you harm both yourselfand others, and there‘s no benefit whatsoever. The eight abandonments (of killing and so forth)explained here, ill will towards others and theten non-virtues, which harm others either

directly or indirectly, are all negative actionsand bring no happiness at all, only suffering.

With respect to karma, positive actions causehappiness and negative actions causesuffering. For example, in this life you havereceived the body of a happy migratory beingthrough having practiced morality in the past.

There are three ways for ordinary beings torealize the way phenomena exist. Somephenomena can be realized through trueperception, some through inferential cognition(realizing the presence of fire from seeingsmoke, for example), and others throughdependence on valid quotations in which onehas faith. Since you have neither clairvoyance

nor omniscience, the only way to realize karmais to depend on the Omniscient One‘squotations, in much the same way as youbelieve historical facts by depending on theknowledge and explanations of past andpresent historians.

If you harm others you might feel guilty in thislife. Even if you don‘t feel guilty, harming otherscauses you to have many enemies and bringsneither happiness nor relaxation to your mind;instead, it makes you insecure and fearful. Thiscan be seen by examining the experiences ofpeople who have done such negative actions.Cancer and AIDS, for example, are results ofprevious negative karma. By observing theresults of non-virtuous actions you can developa definite understanding of how worthwhile it is

to abandon them. This is the foundation of allhappiness.

Page 5: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

Others don‘t want you to harm them; all theywant is benefit and happiness, just as you don‘twant any harm from them, only benefit. Youare completely responsible for bringinghappiness to all sentient ix beings. By yourmaking a vow to abandon harming them bykilling them and so forth, the numberless othersentient beings stop being harmed by you and

instead receive happiness. In this way youbecome completely responsible for thehappiness of all sentient beings.

Practicing the eight-limbed Mahayana Method

of Restoring and Purifying is the suprememethod for avoiding harm to all sentient beingsand bringing them happiness and benefit. It iseasy to do and has immeasurable benefit. Withthis fundamental practice of morality— abstaining from harming others—you can help

effect world peace. No matter how many meetings are held in thename of world peace, there will be no benefituntil people begin to abstain from harmingothers. Keeping the Eight Mahayana Precepts

for one day, or even one hour, and thus

Page 6: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

protecting your mind from disturbing negativethoughts becomes a contribution to peace notonly for the human beings of this world but alsofor all other sentient beings. So, while you havethis precious human rebirth, it is most essentialto make your life as meaningful as possibleand not cheat yourself.

I have prayed that those who read this

teaching, let alone who practice it, will never bereborn in the lower realms, and especially thatthey will generate bodhicitta and quickly attainenlightenment.

For the sake of all mother sentient beings, may

I actualize this book. May those who read itgenerate the wish to take the Eight MahayanaPrecepts and, until they achieve enlightenment, may they always be free from rebirth in thelower realms and never be separated fromqualified Mahayana teachers.

By sentient beings‘ seeing this book and by thepractice of the Eight Mahayana Precepts, mayall epidemic diseases, cancer, AIDS, and allother sicknesses by cured; may all disputes, wars and famines stop immediately; may the

rains fall at the right time and may all harvests

be abundant; may sentient beings experienceall enjoyments and an abundance of all that isgood; may there be peace in the world; andmay everyone find happiness.

 THE SHORTCOMINGS OF DEGENERATINGTHE PRECEPTS

It is said in the Vinaya teaching, Vinaya Transmission , that even if one transgressesthe great word of the Lord only a few times, one still experiences ill effects. Being non-

virtuous and transgressing Buddha‘s teachingslead to rebirth in the animal realms, as with thenaga Elapatra.

In former times, when Shakyamuni Buddha, the Destroyer, the Qualified, the One Gone

Beyond, was giving a discourse, Elapatra, Kingof the Nagas, whose name means ―havingbranches of the ela,‖ transformed himself into awheel-turning king to attend. Knowing who wassitting before him, Buddha said, ―You harmedthe teachings of Buddha Kashyapa [the

previous Buddha] –are you now going to harmmy teachings as well? Please listen to theteachings in your true form.‖

The next day an enormous serpent withan eladub tree growing out of its head came to

the discourse. When the wind blew through the

Page 9: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

branches of the tree it caused intense paindeep inside the serpent‘s brain. The serpentwas so huge that when its head had reachedBuddha its tail was still leaving the village ofDorjun. Buddha‘s disciples were terrified andbegan to run away, but Buddha said, ―Youneed not be afraid. This serpent is the verysame being that appeared here yesterday in

the form of a wheel-turning king.‖ They askedBuddha what had caused the naga king to beborn with such a monstrous body. Buddhaexplained that once, during the time of BuddhaKashyapa, the naga king had been a fullyordained monk who, while circumambulating

an eladub tree, had hit his head on a branchand become angry. This disturbanceweakened his precept [of abstaining from theunnecessary destruction of plants], and helopped off the branches of the tree. This wasthe action that caused his present rebirth.

Reflecting on the shortcomings of breakingeven this small precept, we should protect ourvows properly.

THE ACTUAL BENEFITS OF PROTECTING

THE PRECEPTS

The specific benefits of protecting the eight branches of the Restoring and Purifying Ordination

The benefits of abandoning the taking of life . Inthis life and in all future lives one‘s life will belong, magnificent and free from illness.

The benefits of abandoning taking that which is not given . In this and in all future lives one willhave perfect enjoyments, and others will notharm them.

The benefits of abandoning the sexual act . Inthis life and in all future lives one will have agood body with a beautiful complexion andcomplete sense organs.

The benefits of abandoning lies . In this life and

in all future lives one will not be cheated, andothers will take heed of what one says.

The benefits of abandoning intoxicants (including alcohol, cigarettes, mind-altering drugs and any other substance that loosens

voluntary reserve). In this life and in all future

lives one will have stable mindfulness andawareness, clear senses and perfect wisdom.

The benefits of abandoning large and high beds and thrones . In this life and in all futurelives one will receive praise and respect fromothers, one will have proper bedding (soft, warm, whatever is needed), and one will have

vehicles and animals for traveling. The benefits of abandoning food at improper times . In this life and in all future lives one willhave abundant and perfect crops and willobtain food and drink without effort.

The benefits of abandoning perfume, ornaments , and so forth. In this life and in allfuture lives one‘s body will have a pleasantscent, color and shape and many auspiciousmarks.

The benefits of abandoning singing and dancing . In this life and in all future lives onewill have a subdued body and mind, and one‘sspeech will continually make the sound ofDharma.

The general benefits of protecting the eight branches of the Restoring and Purifying Ordination

The great benefit in dependence upon time .In Victorious Concentration Sutra , Buddhasays that if with a calm mind one makesofferings of umbrellas, victory banners, light

and jewel ornaments to a hundred billionbuddhas for eons equal to the number of sandgrains in the Ganges River, a great deal ofmerit is acquired. However, if, during thesedegenerate times when the holy Dharma, theteaching of the One Gone to Bliss, has almost

ceased, one keeps just one precept for a dayand a night, the merit acquired is far greaterthan that of giving all those offerings to anuncountable number of buddhas over such along period.

Therefore, if the Restoring and PurifyingOrdination is protected just once in one‘s life, the amount of merit accumulated is equal tothe vastness of the sky and, as oneaccumulates this merit, one gradually achievesperfect happiness. By understanding this, one

can see how fortunate one is to have the

Page 13: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-direct-and-unmistaken-method-8-precepts 13/73

opportunity to take the ordination and howmeaningful it is during these difficult anddegenerate times. It is like finding billions ofwish-fulfilling gems.

Even though one may not own one atom of aprecious gem or have a single dollar, bykeeping this ordination one can attain both

temporary and ultimate happiness. The personwho owns enough wish-fulfilling gems to fill thesky but does not keep even one branch ofmorality cannot attain rebirth as a human or agod, cannot practice Dharma to accomplishany of the three great purposes (higher rebirth,

liberation or enlightenment), and cannot enjoyperfect helpers and enjoyments.

The great benefit in dependence upon the place . If one practices pure virtue in a purerealm for eons, the merit accumulated is not as

great as that acquired by practicing virtue in animpure realm for the duration of a finger snap.

The benefit in dependence upon the nature of the precepts . In the sutras Buddha explainedthat if the most vicious of serpents, the great

black naga , cannot harm those living in perfect

Page 14: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

morality, then there is no doubt that otherscannot harm them.

The fully ordained monk [gelong ] who liveswithin morality glows (with purity). Living inmorality brings peace and happiness. Infinitebenefits of morality can be described. (Thebest way to protect oneself from outer harm is

to protect the inner ordination.) Just as aperson without eyes cannot see shapes, aperson without morality cannot attainliberation.

The benefit of creating the cause to meet the

teachings of Maitreya Buddha . MaitreyaBuddha promised that anyone who listens withdevotion to the teachings of ShakyamuniBuddha and protects the Restoring andPurifying Ordination will be born amongst hisretinue as a disciple.

Therefore, if one wants to bring one‘s cyclicexistence to an end in the future by meetingthe teachings of Maitreya Buddha, then now, while one has this precious human body withits eight freedoms and ten endowments and

has met Buddha‘s teachings and Mahayana

Page 15: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-direct-and-unmistaken-method-8-precepts 15/73

teachers, it is extremely worthwhile to take theordination of the Eight Mahayana Precepts andto protect these vows well.

The benefit of receiving protection from the gods . Many sutras explain that if one protectsthe precepts properly, the gods who are fond ofvirtue will protect one day and night.

The benefit of great power . Merit accumulatedby one who protects the precepts is verypowerful. A person living in the precepts whooffers the Triple Gem a drop of butter that isonly enough to cover the tip of a needle

creates far greater merit than one not living inthe precepts who offers the Triple Gem anocean of butter. Merit accumulated over manyeons by one not living in the Restoring andPurifying Ordination cannot be compared to themerit accumulated in just a short time by one

living in the ordination.

The benefit of obtaining, without doubt, whatever one wishes . During this degenerateage, one who takes the Eight MahayanaPrecepts and keeps them purely will definitely

receive whatever one prays for.

Page 16: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

8/3/2019 The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-direct-and-unmistaken-method-8-precepts 16/73

The benefit of receiving the good body of a human or a god . If one protects the EightMahayana Precepts just once, one will attainthe special bodies of gods or humans. Storiesproving the benefits of such rebirths are toonumerous to mention here.

The benefit of being an object for the accumulation of merit by others . One whotakes ordination becomes an object for theaccumulation of merit by others throughbecoming a (proper) object for offerings, prostrations, and so on. The higher number of

precepts held by monks and nuns are thecause for others to create greater and morepowerful merit by making offerings and soforth.

The benefit of simplicity . The Eight Mahayana

Precepts has the advantage of being easy totake. It is said in A Guide to the Bodhisattva’sWay of Life that if while bearing hardships ofrecitation over a long period, even many eons, one is distracted by other objects while reciting, the recitations will bear no fruit. To cultivate

virtue through recitation there must be great

Page 17: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-direct-and-unmistaken-method-8-precepts 17/73

concentration and no mental wandering fromthe beginning, through the middle to the end.Without proper concentration, all the difficultiesborne during the recitation becomemeaningless.

On the other hand, with the Eight MahayanaPrecepts one need pay attention for only the

few minutes it takes to complete the ordinationceremony; afterwards, even if one‘s mind isdistracted, the benefits of taking the preceptsare not diminished. Also, there are fewerprecepts than in other ordinations and theyhave to be kept for only one day, a very short

time. For myself and others like me there is nopractice easier than this. When done, it hasgreat meaning.

The benefit of liberation and full enlightenment .Protecting the Eight Mahayana Precepts

(which are also known as the Eight Fast- DayVows) becomes the cause ultimately toachieve full enlightenment. In Sutra Requested by Deva , Shakyamuni Buddha said, ―Goshika,by protecting the Eight Mahayana Precepts onthe eighth and fifteenth days [of the month] and

during the month of Buddha‘s Great Miraculous

Page 18: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

Deeds, one attains no less than Buddhahood.‖

There is no question that one will receive thebody of a god as well as peerlessenlightenment by taking and maintaining theprecepts. Furthermore, the qualities of abuddha‘s holy form body, the thirtytwo holysigns and the eighty holy exemplifications, are

achieved by having protected the eightbranches in the past. Shakyamuni Buddha, who completed the mind-training incompassion for every sentient being, would notlie and can be fully trusted—if not because ofhis omniscient mind, then because of his great

compassion. Since we do not have theclairvoyance to see karma and all its effects,we must rely on the explanations given byShakyamuni Buddha, the fully enlightened one,who possesses great compassion, omniscientmind and perfect power. If we cannot trust the

words of such a compassionate, fullyenlightened being, then who can we trust tohelp us to complete the inner development ofour minds?

In Sutra Requested by Kundu Sanring , the kind

and compassionate Buddha was asked, ―What

Page 19: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

previous karma did you, the Destroyer, theQualified, the One Gone Beyond, collect inorder to achieve the vajra holy body, theBuddha body possessing all qualities up to theinconceivable ushnisha [crowning top-knot]?‖

The Destroyer, the Qualified, the One GoneBeyond answered, ―This is the result of having

practiced in past lives the morality ofabandoning killing by pacifying the mentalafflictions that would cause me to shorten thelives of others.‖

―Why do the Buddha‘s hands have thousand-

spoked golden wheels and long fingers withwebs of light?‖

―This is the benefit of having practiced in pastlives the morality of abandoning taking thatwhich is not given.‖

―Why does the Buddha have complete sensesand a fully developed body?‖

―This is the result of having practiced in pastlives the morality of abandoning sexual

misconduct, which is caused by mental

afflictions.‖

―Why is the Buddha‘s body pervaded by the

fragrant scent of morality?‖

holy signs?‖

―This is the result of having practiced in pastlives the morality of abandoning singing, dancing and wearing ornaments out of mentalaffliction.‖

―Why does the Buddha enjoy the three seats of

―This is the result of having practiced in past

lives the morality of abandoning telling lies outof mental affliction.‖

―Why does the Buddha have an inconceivablyhigh ushnisha ?‖

―This is the result of in past lives having

touched the ground with the five parts of thebody [the four limbs and the head] inprostration and having made offerings toBuddha, Dharma, Sangha, the guru, the leaderof the disciples [preceptor] and the abbot.‖

Infinite benefits could be mentioned, but only afew are described here, most of which are

specifically mentioned in the benefits of thenear-abiding pratimoksha [self-liberation] vows. The eight precepts of the one-day MahayanaRestoring and Purifying Ordination are similarto these pratimoksha vows, so one can restassured that the benefits are also similar.

THE METHOD OF COMMITMENT

The eight branches of the near-abidingpratimoksha vows and the eight branches ofthe Mahayana Restoring and Purifying vows

are the same in their observation of the eightabandonments, but vastly different in otherways.

The first and foremost difference is the sourceof the ordinations. The practice of the near-

abiding pratimoksha method comes from Sutra

Page 23: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

8/3/2019 The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-direct-and-unmistaken-method-8-precepts 23/73

of Dam-say Ne-jo , whereas the MahayanaRestoring and Purifying Ordination is takenfrom the tantric text Don-zhag Zhi-moi .

The second difference is that the near-abidingpratimoksha vows cannot be taken by thosewith the ordination of renunciation [rabjung ],but the Mahayana Restoring and Purifying

Ordination may be taken even by a fullyordained vajra master.

The third difference is in the motivation fortaking the ordinations. The near-abidingpratimoksha ordination is taken in dependence

upon the attitude of seeking the sorrowlessstate for oneself alone, while the MahayanaRestoring and Purifying Ordination is takenwith the attitude of definitely achievingenlightenment for the sake of others.

The fourth difference is in the method of takingthe ordinations. The preparation for taking thenear-abiding pratimoksha ordination is torequest attention and go for refuge, as in thesutra Dam-say Ne-jo . The preparation for theMahayana Restoring and Purifying Ordination,

as explained in the tantric text Don-zhag Zhi-

Page 24: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

moi , is first to request the attention of all thebuddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directionsand then to promise three times to protect theprecepts by following the example of theprevious Victorious Ones.

The final difference is in the result achieved. The holder of the near-abiding pratimoksha

vows will achieve, according to his or hermotivation, the sorrowless state of both thelower and greater vehicles, whereas the holderof the Mahayana Restoring and PurifyingOrdination who does not degenerate the vowswill definitely achieve full enlightenment.

Waking early, wash and refresh yourselfproperly and then set up an altar for the TripleGem in a clean and beautiful place. Theofferings should be as plentiful and delightfulas you can make them. The precepts are taken

in the early hours just before dawn, when thelines on the palm of your [outstretched] handare just visible.

Contemplate the shortcomings of ordinarysufferings and their true cause in relation to

yourself. Remember the pitiful state of allmother sentient beings throughout infinitespace, and from the depths of your heart thinkthat you, the fortunate one, are able to seekand attain enlightenment. Now, in the presenceof the holy objects and with great respect and

devotion, take the Mahayana ordination.

After the invocation, visualize that yourinfinitely kind root guru Avalokiteshvara,

―Even though I and all sentient beings, whoequal the extent of infinite space, haveexperienced countless forms of suffering frombeginningless time until now (such as thegeneral sufferings of cyclic existence and, particularly, the sufferings of the three lowerrealms), still I am unable to generate a single

thought of aversion or frustration at thisexistence. Instead, because of the power ofmisguided habits such as grasping at sufferingas happiness and grasping at that which isselfless as having a self, I am under the controlof the afflictions and their actions (karma), and

once again I will have to experience andendure without choice the sufferings of cyclicexistence and the three lower realms, evenmore extensively and abundantly than before.

―If I were to really consider this situation it

would definitely bring pain to my heart, angerand upset. However, even ShakyamuniBuddha and all the other buddhas of the pastwere not always buddhas. Like me, they oncelived in cyclic existence and then, through thekindness of just one virtuous friend they had

met, they generated the thought to definitely

emerge from cyclic existence and theawakening mind of loving concern for each andevery sentient being. Then, by taking thisMahayana ordination and protecting theprecepts purely and by training in the path, they attained enlightenment.

―Similarly, having met the Mahayana teachings

through the kindness of my virtuous teacher, Itoo will generate the altruistic aspiration toattain enlightenment and train in the path. Inthis way I shall definitely attain the state ofenlightenment—this (thought) is the closefriend from which I must never be separated,

on the basis, on the path and at the result.

―Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, mother sentientbeings, who equal the extent of infinite space, are the source of all the collections ofexcellence in this and future lives. Since

beginningless time, all mother sentient beingshave held me dear and are still doing so, andthey will continue to do so until the end ofcyclic existence. If I renounce them, and inearnest devotion seek the means for myhappiness alone, this would not only be unwise

and foolish but would also make me not the

slightest bit different from an animal. Therefore, for the benefit of all sentient beings, who equalthe extent of infinite space, I must attain theprecious state of perfect and fully completedenlightenment. For this purpose, before allbuddhas and bodhisattvas as my witness, Ishall take the Mahayana precepts and protectthem well until sunrise tomorrow.‖

TAKING THE PRECEPTS

The precepts should be taken with such greatcommitment that tears come to your eyes andyour hair stands on end.

Visualize Guru Avalokiteshvara before you andrepeat the prayer for taking the precepts threetimes.

On completing the third recitation, think that

you have received the vows in your continuumand rejoice.

Then regenerate the thought of bodhicitta, thealtruistic aspiration to attain enlightenment forthe sake of all sentient beings, by thinking,

―Just as the previous arhats abandoned all

Page 30: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

faulty behavior of body and speech, such askilling and so forth, and mentally turned awayfrom them, similarly, I too shall properlypractice the trainings by avoiding those faultybehaviors for one day for the welfare of allsentient beings.‖

Recite the commitment prayer to keep the

precepts.Recite the mantra of pure morality twenty-onetimes.Finally, recite the prayer to keep one‘s moralitypure, make three prostrations and dedicate themerits.

In this way, the practice is adorned by prayerand dedication and has been described forthose taking the Mahayana precepts bythemselves. If you are taking the preceptsbefore a master, offer him a mandala. The

master himself will have first taken theprecepts (that morning) alone and is requiredto explain well the thoughts and visualizationsof the practice, from beginning to end. In theprayer for taking the precepts, the line thatsays, ―Master, please pay attention to me,‖

must be included. The prayer for taking the

Taking the Mahayana Restoring and

Purifying Ordination

by His Holiness Trijang Dorje Chang 4

EXPLANATION OF THE ORDINATIONPRAYER(See pp. 17 –19)

Just as the previous tathagatas . The previousbuddhas, those who have gone beyond,

(placed the mind in meditative equipoise) withtranscendental wisdom similar to the reality ofall existence, suchness and the sphere ofemptiness. Another meaning of theword tathagata is found in the text Expressing the Names of Manjugosha : ―As the Buddha

speaks, thus he acts,‖ which means just as thesentient beings, who are the object to besubdued, were shown practice andabandonment (the path), similarly in the pastthe Buddha himself entered that path andpracticed until he reached the state of

Buddhahood.

Page 51: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

8/3/2019 The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-direct-and-unmistaken-method-8-precepts 51/73

Foe destroyers (or arhats ) refers to those whohave destroyed without remainder all fourgross and subtle hindrances (maras ).

Perfectly completed buddhas refers to thosewho have completed purely all the qualities ofrealization and abandonment without exception;

who are purified of the darkness of ignorance, which constantly disturbs with the subtleimprints of the mistakes of the hallucinateddualistic view; and who have developed thewisdom that is able to perceive all objects ofknowledge of the two truths: the way things

exist (the absolute truth) and how many thereare (conventional truth).

Like the divine wise horse refers to the (wise)horse that is fit to be ridden by a wheel-turningking and follows a pleasant path without

danger, protecting its rider. Such a horsecarries its rider to a place of happiness, withoutdisturbance. Likewise, the Buddha takes uponhimself indefatigably the responsibility ofworking for others; that is, leading sentientbeings to liberation and omniscient mind by not

disturbing the three doors with mistakes of the

Page 52: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

vices.

The great elephant is an elephant that cancarry a load no ordinary horse or elephant can.Similarly, the Great Compassionate Onecarries a load that cannot be carried byHearers (shravaka ) or Solitary Realizers(pratyekabuddha )—the constant responsibility

to accomplish for all sentient beings theirunsurpassable benefit and happiness withouteven being asked (by them to do so).

Did what had to be done means went to thelimit of abandonment (of one‘s own work).

Performed actions means voluntarily took theresponsibility of working for others in whateverway was necessary to subdue their minds.

Laid down the burden . The Buddha‘s mental

continuum left the burden of the defiledreceiver aggregates born from karma andafflictions.

Subsequently attained their own welfare .Having accomplished the works for others—the

deeds of the Sons of the Victors

Page 53: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

having given up working for oneself.

In order to benefit means to bring all sentientbeings temporarily to higher rebirths.

In order to liberate means to lead themultimately to definite goodness (liberation andenlightenment).

In order to eliminate famine refers toeliminating the poverty of not having Dharmaand material needs.

In order to eliminate sickness refers to the

sicknesses of body and mind and to thechronic diseases of the three poisons (anger, attachment and ignorance).

In order to fully complete the practices harmonious with enlightenment refers to the

four close contemplations and so on.

And in order to definitely actualize the unsurpassed result of perfect, complete enlightenment refers to the attainment ofenlightenment, with the result abandonment

and the completion of all realizations.

Page 55: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-direct-and-unmistaken-method-8-precepts 55/73

Perfectly performed the Restoring and Purifying Ordination means the EightMahayana Precepts.

Similarly, also I, who am called (say your name), from this time until tomorrow sunrise, for the welfare of all sentient beings, in order to

benefit, in order to liberate… and so forthmeans thus, for the sake of sentient beings, tobenefit and liberate them, from this time untilsunrise tomorrow I shall also correctly take andprotect the eightlimbed ordination, whichrestores the Mahayana root of virtue and

purifies negative karma (non-virtue). With thisattitude, recite the prayer verbally.

PRAYER OF THE PRECEPTSWith the thought of protecting the precepts, thecommitment prayer should now be recitedonce. (See pp. 19 –20)

The second part of the commitment prayerconcerns the meaning of and the need fortaking the precepts.

―In order to benefit sentient beings, to liberatethem and so forth, from now until tomorrow

Page 56: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

sunrise I shall restore the Mahayana roots ofvirtue and purify all non-virtue by also takingthe eight-branched ordination.‖ Thinking in thisway, recite the prayer.

Explanation of the eight branches  Recitation of the commitment prayer isfollowed by the method of protecting the

precepts. It is not sufficient merely to receivethe precepts; one must protect them frombecoming undermined by recognizing the eightabandonments and observing them purely. What are these eight? They are theabandonments of the four root and the four

branch vows.

The four root vows The first root vow is to abandon killing: From now on I shall not kill . The basis of killing isanother sentient being. Recognition of the

object is the thought that identifies the object. The motivation is the intention to kill, motivatedby one of the three poisons. The actioncompletes the wish to kill by means of poison, weapon, mantra and so forth. Completioncomes when the other sentient being dies

before oneself. ―I shall not kill‖ means making

Page 57: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

the commitment not to take the life of a singlesentient being, from a human down to thesmallest insect, from now until sunrisetomorrow.

The second root vow is to abandon taking thatwhich is not given: (I shall not) take others’ possessions . The basis is something that is

claimed by another to be his or her own.Recognition is the thought that identifies theobject. One of the three afflictions gives rise tothe motivation, which is the wish to take theobject, even though it has not been given. Theaction is performed by means of force, stealth

or deceit. The completion of the action is thesatisfaction that one has obtained the object. ―Ishall not take‖ means making a commitmentnot to take wealth or possessions that have notbeen given, from the most valuable to the mostinsignificant, such as a needle and thread, as

long as the object is claimed by another to behis or her own.

The third root vow is to avoid sexual activity: (I shall not ) engage in sexual activity . The basisof sexual misconduct is improper objects (such

as one‘s parents), wrong organs (such as the

deceive. The action can be telling a lie oneself, getting another to lie for one, or even deceivingwithout actually speaking, for example, merelynodding one‘s head or making some other facial or physical gesture. Completion is whenanother person understands the (false)meaning of the action. ―I shall not speak falsewords‖ means making the commitment not to

lie, from the most serious way, such as lyingabout one‘s spiritual realizations, to the mostsimple way, or even as a jokeThe four branch vows The first branch vow is: I shall avoid intoxicants, from which many faults arise. Intoxicants, such as beer, wine and so

forth, are mixtures of several ingredients. Theiruse can unbalance the mind and definitelycreate the conditions for many non-virtuousharms and mistakes to arise, either quickly orgradually, depending upon one‘s mind. Ingeneral, ordained people are not allowed to

drink even a drop of any intoxicant and, duringa Mahayana ordination such as this, even laypeople must abstain completely from takingintoxicants.

The second branch vow is: I shall not sit on

large, high or expensive beds. This also refers

Page 60: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

to large thrones made of gold, silver, sandalwood, medicinal woods, precious jewelsand so forth, and one must avoid seats madeof glossy silk and tiger or lion skins as well.

The third branch vow is: I shall not eat food at the wrong times. In general, ordained peopleshould take food at the proper time, which for

them is between sunrise and noon. Upontaking the Eight Mahayana Precepts, one mustavoid black foods, such as meat, eggs, garlicand onions, and eat food of the three whitesubstances before noon, in one sitting, and notget up to take a second helping. One must

then abandon eating food at the wrong time—from noon that day until sunrise the next.

The fourth branch vow is: I shall avoid singing, dancing and playing music, and I shall not wear perfumes, garlands or ornaments. One

should not use, out of attachment, scents ofincense and flowers, such as jasmine, saffron, crocus, marigold and calendula. One shouldnot wear on the head or neck garlands ofturquoise, coral, pearls or flowers. One shouldnot wear ornaments of gold or turquoise. One

should abandon dancing to rhythm, clapping

Page 61: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

one‘s hands or stomping one‘s feet for thesake of splendor or pleasure. Also to beabandoned, when done just for fun, are playingmusical instruments and singing, and, for thesake of grace and charm, putting on rouge, nailpolish and so forth. Massaging the body withointments and oils should also be avoidedcompletely.

However, there is no harm or negative karmain singing, dancing and playing musicalinstruments as offerings to the Triple Gem, orin sitting on a high throne to give teachings. Infact, such activities cause the accumulation of

merit.

The way in which these eight branches shouldbe protected is:

Just as the arhats have avoided wrong actions,

such as taking the lives of others,So shall I avoid wrong actions such as takingthe lives of others.May I quickly attain enlightenment,And may the living beings who areexperiencing the various sufferings

Be released from the ocean of cyclic

existence.

If one wonders how one can possibly protectthese vows, one should think of the previoustathagatas, who protected the precepts forever, and the shortcomings of not holding the rootand branch vows of avoiding killing and soforth. One should practice these

abandonments and protect them purely with allactions of body, speech and mind for thebenefit of all sentient beings, thinking: ―Fromnow until sunrise tomorrow I shall abandon theeight actions of killing and so forth. Byabandoning them and observing purely the

eight branches, may I quickly attainunsurpassable, complete enlightenment.‖

And may the living beings who are experiencing the various sufferings be released from the ocean of cyclic existence refers to the

fact that even after one attains full andcomplete enlightenment, mother sentientbeings will still be living in fear, constantlytossed by the violent waves of the threesufferings (suffering of suffering, suffering ofchange and pervasive suffering). Think: ―By

myself, I shall liberate them from the four

Page 63: The Direct and Unmistaken Method (8 Precepts)

floods of birth, aging, sickness and death,‖ andgenerate the altruistic Mahayana thought, aspiring to attain enlightenment for the sake ofothers. The importance of the need to train inthe two aspirations to liberate sentient beingsfrom cyclic existence cannot beoveremphasized.

The first four vows (to avoid killing, stealing, sexual activity and lying) are the branches ofpracticing morality; abandoning intoxicants isthe branch of practicing conscientiousness;and the remaining three (to avoid high andexpensive beds and seats; singing, dancing

and so forth; and taking food at improper times)are the branches of penitence.

If, having committed oneself to observing thesevows, one conducts oneself carelessly, one willaccumulate the shortcomings not only of not

observing them, but also of telling lies. Therefore, one must protect these vows withmindfulness and awareness. If, throughcarelessness, the vows are degenerated, oneshould recite the mantra of pure morality threetimes to purify and restore them.

Special Allowances for Taking the Precepts

by Geshe Lam-rimpa 5

It is said in the auto-commentaryto Abhidharmakosha that it is acceptable forpeople such as butchers (who do not kill at

night) and prostitutes (who do not work duringthe day) to take the precepts for less than aday and a night. If such people take the EightMahayana Precepts they will have the fruits ofthe practice, and therefore, if the precepts aretaken for just half the period and protected

during that time, there is no fault; in fact, theywill become very meaningful. One should try toobserve the precepts for the entire period of aday and a night, but if one cannot observethem for the complete twenty-four hour period, one can observe them for half that time, or for

even a half-hour. When the precepts are taken, the exact duration for which they will beobserved should be stated: ―from now untilsunset tonight,‖ for example.

In the teachings of Gelong Jangchub Zangpo it

is said that since (the Mahayana) accepts the

taking of the bodhisattva vows from now untilenlightenment, this principle also applies to theEight Mahayana Precepts, which can also begenerated from now until that time.

Compendium of All Explanations (Kun-tu Nam- sha), composed by Gyaltseb Je, also says thatthe Eight Mahayana Precepts can be

generated for more than twenty-four hours. Hesays that the assertion that the fast-dayprecepts are generated for only a day and anight and no longer is found in the traditionpropounded by one particular Hearers‘ schoolof thought and is a mistake.

In the teachings of Maitripa, the request whenthe precepts are given is, ―Venerable(Tib. dzumpa , ‗firm in avoiding nonvirtue‘),please pay attention to me. I, the upasaka [layholder of precepts] whose name is…, until the

essence of enlightenment….‖

According to Kunkyen Jamyang Shepa, themethod of the nearabiding eight precepts takenuntil enlightenment is stated in theexplanations of various sutras and tantras. The

Mahayana Restoring and 31 Purifying

Ordination is definitely generated up untilenlightenment because it incorporates themind generation of bodhicitta.

Even the Lesser Vehicle tradition, which doesnot accept that the vow of near-abiding can lastfor more than one day, contains the opportunityof taking the vows for many days at one

ceremony. The texts of Thubten Jhidor statethat one is allowed to take the precepts formany days at a time. Even though the eightfast-day precepts are definitely a branch of theone-day approaching and abiding precepts, onoccasions such as the celebration of Buddha‘s

Great Miraculous Deeds, if the precepts are tobe observed without interruption for half amonth, they may be taken just once for thatduration. Besides, if the ceremony of the one-day vows is recited up to fifteen times, there isno mistake in this becoming the one-day vows

for as many days as the number of recitations.

The commentary to Abhidharmakosha saysthat if one is taking the fast-day precepts for acontinuous period of half a month or so, it isacceptable to take them at one ceremony by

reciting the prayer the same number of times

afternoon, and he could not refuse. Due tobreaking this precept he was unable to attainrebirth in the human realm, but because heobserved the remaining seven precepts he wasreborn as a king of the nagas. Eventually, bothattained the state of a foe destroyer. Like thetwo beggars, one receives separately both thebenefits of protecting the precepts (one keeps)

and the shortcomings of not protecting theprecepts (one doesn‘t keep).

Even if one falls short on one precept, oneshould protect the others as much as possible.Even if one precept, such as fasting, is broken

for some reason, one should not abandon itentirely for the rest of the day—wheneverpossible one should still protect it. (Thedegenerated vow should be immediatelypurified and restored by reciting the purificationmantra three times.)

As explained before, if one protects just oneprecept for even a second, one receivesimmeasurable benefits—benefits that are notreceived merely by not engaging in harmfulactions (without having taken the vows). One

should have the preliminary thought, ―In the

presence of the holy object I shall protect thevows from now until….‖

In short, if one wishes not to let oneself down, even though one can protect only one precept, one should protect it. Furthermore, even if thatone precept can be kept for only a briefmoment, one should protect it for that time.

Reading about the Eight Mahayana Precepts, observing them or even rejoicing when othersobserve such a practice creates great positivepotential in our minds. In order that this[positive potential] be of greatest benefit to usand to others, it is very helpful to dedicate itfollowing the example of the bodhisattva

Shantideva.May all beings everywherePlagued by sufferings of body and mindObtain an ocean of happiness and joyBy virtue of my merits.

May no living creature suffer,Commit evil or ever fall ill.May no one be afraid or belittled,With a mind weighed down by depression.

May the blind see forms,And the deaf hear sounds.May those whose bodies are worn with toilBe restored on finding repose.

May the naked find clothing,

The hungry find food;

May the thirsty find waterAnd delicious drinks.

May the poor find wealth,Those weak with sorrow find joy;May the forlorn find hope,Constant happiness and prosperity.

May there be timely rainsAnd bountiful harvests;May all medicine be effectiveAnd wholesome prayers bear fruit.

May all who are sick and ill

Quickly be freed from their ailments.Whatever diseases there are in the world,May they never occur again.

May the frightened cease to be afraidAnd those bound be freed;

May the powerless find powerAnd may people think of benefiting each other.
