Biography – Prof. Ella Naparstek, MD
Prof. Ella Naparstek is the Chairman of the
Hematology Institute and the Department of
Hematology and Bone Marrow
Transplantation at Tel Aviv Sourasky
Medical Center in Tel Aviv.
Prof. Naparstek received her M.D. form the
Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School
in Jerusalem.
She completed her training in Medicine and Hematology at Hadassah University Hospital,
and then spent two years at Dana Farber Cancer Center, Harvard University Medical
School in Boston, studying stem cell biology and its regulatory mechanisms.
In 1991-92 Prof. Naparstek was a visiting scientist in the Clinical Hematology Branch at
the National Institute of Health (NIH), Bethesda, where she was involved in basic research
projects, involving the use of retro-viral vectors for gene transfer into hematopoietic stem
cells.
Until 1998 Prof. Naparstek was a senior physician in the Department of Hematology and
then in the Dept. of Bone Marrow Transplantation at Hadassah University Hospital in
Jerusalem, and an associate Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew
University and Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem.
In 1998 Prof. Naparstek had joined the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, where she
launched the Bone Marrow Transplantation program. In 2001 she became the Chairman of
the Hematology Institute and the Head of the Department of Hematology and Bone
Marrow Transplantation at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.
Prof. Naparstek's major clinical interest is stem cell transplantation. She performed the
first bone marrow transplantation in Israel and is one of the leading figures in this field.
Prof. Naparstek's current research projects include development of new strategies for
detection of micro-chimerism; cellular immunotherapy using dendritic cell hybrids;
regulation of immune recovery after stem cell transplantation and control of normal and
malignant hematopoiesis.
