The Distributor October 2016
Director’s Corner October 2016
As summer comes to an end, our Model A adventures are now a memory, but what memories we’ve made! It’s
great to see new faces and cars we haven’t see before on the road! We had a busy and fun summer filled with
tours, trips, and cruise nights!
A special thank you to Jim and Myrna Patterson, who on Sunday, September 11, led us on a well planned trip
to the Civil War Museum in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Jim took Sheridan Road north-what a treat in a Model A!
With 40 members and 16 Model A’s, it was followed by lunch on the harbor at The Boat House in Kenosha.
Looking towards fall, we have some excellent activities coming up. Roger and Paulette Halvorsen and Dan and
Melinda Pritchett have a fabulous weekend planned with the fall overnighter going to the Newport Antique
Antique Auto Hill Climb. If you haven’t been before, this is the year to go. This is the weekend of September
30 to October 2. Frank Smith and George Lettner will take us on a fantastic tour of Rosehill Cemetery on
October 23, with lunch across the street at Fireside Tavern and Grill. Dan and Millie Pritchett will conclude our
driving season on November 6 with the third annual Turkey Dinner. We are adding a brand new event to the
calendar. Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo is a celebration with over one million twinkling LED lights. Mike
Kochevar will be hosting this event on December 10. These are all great events for the entire family! Remember
to show off your warm and stylish Illinois Region fleece jackets (see Mark Maron to purchase one if needed).
November is election time for the Illinois Region. Please let me or any board member know if you have any
questions. I will again be running for Director and the rest of the Board will seek reelection. If the current board
runs unopposed, balloting shall be waived and motion made and seconded for uncontested election by
acclamation allowed at the November meeting. We are following the National’s lead on this and it has also
been changed in our own constitution.
Remember to pay your dues starting this month-you must be a member of one of the national clubs (MARC or
MAFCA) to be a member of the Illinois Region. Hope everyone lucky enough to go to Hershey this year has a
fun and safe trip! -Christine One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he
couldn’t do-Henry Ford

Illinois Region – Business Meeting September 6, 2016
Meeting was called to order at 7:31pm by Christine Rozny.
Christine welcomed everyone. Motion made and seconded to
approve the August Business Meeting Minutes as printed in The
Distributor.
Old Business
Our club received a thank you letter from the Village of Skokie for our
participation in their 4th of July parade from the parade
Chairman/Producer. It was a star studded parade with many local
celebrities and our participation was appreciated. We were invited back to
participate in their 2017 parade.
It was a beautiful night for Mundelein’s cruise night. The Model A was
the featured car and our club brought 8 Model A’s. There were over 500
cars in attendance and Ken Ehrenhofer even brought his fire engine.
Ken Ehrenhofer reported on the August 27th MAFFI A & T Swap.
Although the day began rainy, it cleared up and they ended up with a great
crowd. Ken thanked everyone who helped at the swap. The swap raised
$1530.00, which is being donated to the Model A Museum in Gilmore.
The money raised goes towards the upkeep of the museum, which costs
around $33,000 per year. The museum does have a self-funding account
which will eventually reach one million dollars.
New Business
Treasurer’s Report- Don Mormon reported we have a balance of $9409.81.
The financials are printed in this magazine.
Editor-Mike Goode encouraged members to send him more pictures and
articles for The Distributor
Activities Report- Roger Halvorsen reported on the following.
-Jim Patterson reported on the Civil War Tour on September 11. All
participants will leave the Winnetka McDonald’s at 9:30am and drive up
Sheridan Road to Kenosha. The Civil War Museum tour will begin at
12:30pm. The Kenosha Museum can also be toured. Lunch will follow at
the Boat House Restaurant.
-The Fall Overnighter To Newport Hill Climb will take place on
September 30-October 2. Dan Pritchett reported they will take Route 59 to
Newport with a stop in Momence for lunch. The Hotel in Danville is only
$68 per night. Dan suggested that participants pre-register for the hill
climb to save time. There will also be a club sponsored pizza party on
Friday.
The Cemetery Tour will take place on October 23. George Lettner reported
that the Cemetery Tour is replacing the Pumpkin Rally this year. It will
take place at Rosehill Cemetery at Western and Petersen. There will be a
guided tour for $5 per person. After the tour the cars will be parked in the
cemetery and all participants will walk to a nearby restaurant (Fireside Inn)
for lunch.
The world famous Turkey Dinner will take place on November 6 at the
Lions Club in Elburn. Dan Pritchett that the cost is $23 per person for a
complete turkey dinner served on china. The event was originally run by
the Fox Valley Model A Club, but our club picked the event up when they
dropped it. Last year there were 125 people in attendance but the facility
can handle 250 people. We have invited several other car clubs to join this
wonderful event.
Mike Kochevar presented a new event for December, the Brookfield Zoo
Christmas Lights. The tentative date is Saturday December 14 (please see
Christine’s update on this event in Director’s Corner of this issue.
Correct date is December 10. There is no club discount but Senior tickets
are only $12.50
The Awards Dinner will take place on January 7 at Moretti’s. Deb Sarasin
offered to handle coordinating the banquet once again.
National News-Ken Ehrenhofer reported that the fall tour is being planned
for Newberg, NY-Hudson Valley. It will take place the week after
Gilmore. There will be a welcoming party at the Orange County Choppers
Headquarters. There will also be a bus tour to the 9/11 Memorial and West
Point.
The Membership Meet for 2017 will be in Shipshewana, Indiana. The host
hotel is the Blue Gate Garden Inn. Shipshewana is a great Amish town
with many craft and hobby shops.
The 2017 National Meet will take place in Gettysburg. If you are planning
to attend, please be that the host hotel is already almost completely booked.
MARC will have their tent at Hershey again and they will be having their
“Chili Day” for those who stop by to say “hello!”.
Club Sales- Bob Friskics reported that they are offering several parts for
sale as well as driving logs.
Announcements- Sue Symanski reported that the good news this month is
the Podgorski’s are great grandparents for the seventh time! This baby is
special because the he is the first Podgorski boy (you can relax now, Mike-
ed).
Guests/New Members-Dan Pritchett announced that about 48 members
signed in. There was one guest, Roy from Melrose Park, who owns a 1929
Coupe.
Membership-Mike Kochevar reported that there were no new members.
Director’s Comments-Chris began her comments by asking John Murphy
to talk about the upcoming cruise night on Friday at Hawthorne Woods
Community Park. It is a “mini Ravinia” with a car show prior to live
entertainment. Flyers were available to all who are interested.
A block party will take place on Saturday, September 10, from 12-4 at the
Presbyterian Homes in Evanston. There will be music, a petting zoo, and
games for all. They would like to see some classic cars attend their block
party, so please take your Model A if you are able to attend.
Chris mentioned there are some 10% off coupons from Eastwood
Corporation and offered them to anyone who is interested.
Elections are coming up. If anyone is interested in any of the positions,
please step forward. In the Constitution of the club, if the election is
uncontested, there will be no ballots. A motion will be made and
seconded to approve the current officers at the November meeting.
A suggestion box was put out for any tech talk ideas.
Comments from the Membership-Ken Ehrenhofer suggested that we
request that the blower located towards the rear of the meeting room be
repaired. It is extremely loud and squeaky and prevents the members
from hearing comments during meetings.
Steve Sarasin read an email from Paul Levine discussing an upcoming
car show at the Wilmette Historical Society on September 18 from 12-
3:00pm. They would like to see 20-25 cars from different decades.
Jerry Tiesch held the 50/50 raffle, Blanche told a joke.
Motion was made and seconded for adjournment at 8:21pm.
A Tech Talk on brakes was presented by Ken Ehrenhofer.
Respectfully Submitted, Susan Holmes
Tech Talk: Laser Rust Removal
Thank you to Steve Sarasin for introducing this month’s
Tech Talk topic, Laser Rust Removal. As we know, rust
is every car lover’s worst enemy. It creeps up slowly
and deceptively, often hiding behind paint, and costing
us a vast sum of money and time to get rid of. If rust
gets a full grip onto your project, the only way to truly
get rid of it is by replacing the panel or section of metal.
For rust that is caught earlier, there are other methods
of removing it-sanding, blasting it using sand, soda, or
other material-and more recently, laser blasting. Clean
and fast, the laser device aims 1000-watt laser pulses at
the rusted piece, producing micro plasma bursts, along
with thermal pressure and shockwaves, to sublimate the
rust and separate it from the metal without damaging the
piece. Material removal is halted when the laser is
applied to a clean surface because it only sublimates rust
(Sublimation is the transition from a solid to a gas).
Halloween in the Days of the Model A
What was Halloween like the days of the Model A
Ford? Like a lot of things, not as far off of the way it is
today, from what I tell. A lot of people liked to be scared
back in those days, just as they do now! There were a
number of scary movies out-in the 1931. Aome popular
horror films included Frankenstein, Dr Jeckyl and Mr.
Hyde, Svengali, and not one but two Draculas.
Costumes then-as now, could be scary, funny, sexy, and
often based on popular characters. Minnie Mouse first
saw the light of day in 1928, and by 1930, was a very
popular Halloween costume. Produced, as opposed to
home-made costumes, continued to rise in popularity
during this period as well, although I for one might not
answer the door if the two characters at the lower right
came Trick or Treating to my house-terrifying in 1930-
Like many new technologies, the downside here is cost
of equipment-a lower power laser used for removing
rust starts at $50,000, but will hopefully become more
affordable as it becomes more available. In the
meantime, it may be worth seeking out a shop that does
this work currently as it is clean, fast, and precise
according to various articles I was able to find. You can
also see laser blasting in action on YouTube.
and in 2016 .Trick or treating, pumpkin carving, and
pranks were popular just like they are today, as were
ghost stories, but so were fortune telling games and
cards

out and return it. With money, please!)
Your continued support is appreciated!

Model A Day, Gilmore
ON THE COVER: A Peterson Heritage-Bruce Peterson’s Fordor
Back in the late 1960’s, my parents saw this 1930 Model A in a farmer’s field up to its running boards in mud. They
fell in love with the car, so they visited the farmer and purchased the car from him. (the first image below is Bruce
Peterson’s father with the car).
Jill and I dated while in high school and upon getting engaged, my Dad promised me he’d have the car ready for our
wedding. The car restoration process started in the early 1970’s when my dad hired Eagle River Collision Center to
restore the car and then the car was painted by my uncle’s shop, Cream City Auto Body in Milwaukee. Unfortunately,
the restoration project ran longer than expected (I hear this is not unusual) and didn’t get completed until the later
1970s, missing our wedding in 1977. My parents retired to Shawano, Wisconsin, but my dad rarely took the A out for
a drive, except on special occasions. My dad was a WWII vet and my mom was in the area DAV where they drove the
car in Memorial Day and 4th of July parades.
The car pretty much sat in his garage until five years ago. I asked my dad if we could take the car out for a ride, but we
were unable to get it started. I took the car back to Eagle River Collision to find the engine had rusted tight. I had the
engine rebuilt and added Mitchell Overdrive to speed it up a bit. Special Thanks to Ron Ehrenhofer for coaching me
on how to drive the Model A from Eagle River, Wisconsin, to Crystal Lake, Illinois. I had the good fortune of seeing
my dad light up with pride when he and I drove his car. He was thrilled that I joined a Model A group and he enjoyed
meeting other Model A’ers when he attended Ken Ehrenhofer’s overdrive garage meeting in 2014. Before he passed
away a few months later, he was able to see his car from his hospice window, all decked out for Independence Day.
I am not very mechanical, so I am blessed to live near Ken’s garage where I’m hoping they’ll help me learn more about
my car so I can care for it and “make it better” for the next caretaker!
-Bruce Peterson
