Drivers must tame school bus bullies, says father

The father of a child who took his own life because of bullying has called for better training for bus and coach drivers after issuing a second report into the problem.

His latest publication concludes that the drivers have inadequate training to deal with bullying on vehicles.

The “Vodden report: In the Driv-ers’s Seat”examines the views of bus and coach drivers who take children to and from school.

It was commissioned by Paul Vodden, who began to research the problem of bullying on the school bus after a family tragedy.

Paul, from Southwater, lost his son Ben, 11, in December 2006, when the distressed youngster took his own life at his home after being bullied on the school bus.

Since then Paul has campaigned tirelessly on the issue of bullying on dedicated school buses, call-ing for more action to address the problem and to put in place proce-dures that help protect both child and driver.

Paul says the latest research reveals a lack of training for bus drivers in how to deal with bullying on the school bus.

The new research was published during the current School Trans-port Safety Week that ended today.

Paul said: “After the publication of my fi rst report into bullying on school buses, I had the opportuni-ty to discuss school bus transport with a number of coach drivers.

“This strengthened my view that the driver is often in an unac-ceptable situation, being expected to be ‘in charge’ of their young passengers, more often than not without having received suitable training.

“Having responsibility fi rst and foremost for driving the bus, a task

demanding full attention and con-centration, it is unfair and danger-ous to expect drivers to undertake another task – supervising the be-haviour of their passengers - at the same time.”

The report recommendations include one that says a complete and comprehensive assessment of CCTV use on school coaches must be instigated and completed with-out delay, and installed if thought benefi cial.

In the meantime, another adult who has received suitable and ef-fective training, must be placed on each dedicated bus or coach transporting children to and from school.

The report reveals amongst other points that 67.4% of school bus or coach drivers had witnessed bullying on the school bus and 78% had never been given advice on how to handle instances of bully-ing. 73.6% of school bus or coach drivers had not received any train-ing in working with children.Vodden family on holiday in France

Jeans in order at the offi ce

Staff swapped their offi ce gear for something a little more casual for charity.

Workers at Southern Housing Group, Spire Court, Albion Way, Hor-sham, slipped into jeans for the “Jeans for Genes” fund raiser and made more

than £220.They also took part in activities for

the day, which raises money for chil-dren who are aff ected by some of the most serious and life-threatening ge-netic disorders. A Jeans for Genes cake was eaten to commemorate the day.

Former pupil opens Barns Green schoolA former local pupil of 92 helped children open a new school.

Ronald Baldwin, who attended Itchingfi eld Primary School in 1929, joined with current pupils, Isabella Onoufriou, six, and Sam Saunders, 10, to cut the ribbon with head mas-ter Simon Simmons to offi cially open its replacement, Barns Green School.

Villagers, councillors, pupils, teachers, and local dignitaries all gathered to celebrate the start of a new era in the village.

Mr Simmons w e l c o m e d guests, fol-lowed by s p e e c h e s from Ben A n n e t t s , sales and m a r k e t -ing director of develop-ers Berkeley Homes (South-ern) and Penny Simpson from Itchingfi eld Parish Council and a blessing from Rev Sandra Hall.

Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham, said: "The village school is at the heart of the community and it was wonderful to see a former Itching-fi eld pupil from the 1930's along-side today's pupils taking part in the opening ceremony. A new school means so much to the community and I congratulate the school, staff , governors, village and also Berkeley

Homes for a great achievement."Mr Simmons said: “The end result

is even better than we could have ever imagined.

“It is a spacious, light, bright and airy building and the acoustics are amazing – it is remarkably quiet, even when the school is full of pupils.

“One of the big highlights for me is having a school hall large enough

to hold a full school assembly, something we could nev-

er achieve in the old premises.”

Mr Simmons also presented a large outside wall mosaic, designed and donated by local art-ist Judith Petros, and unveiled the

old Itching-fi eld School

weather vane, transported and

restored by parent Jason Fisher and soon

to sit at the apex of the new building.

Visitors at the open day were able to experience fi rsthand that the new school is ‘shoeless’ because exten-sive under-fl oor heating provides warmth and comfort to maximise the naturally ventilated school.

Mr Annetts said: “Providing a new school for the community of Barns Green has been hugely rewarding for us as a company.”

The woman who died follow-ing a fall from a bridge on to the M23 on September 3 has been formally identifi ed as

Julie Davis, 48, of The Canter, Crawley. An inquest into her death has been opened and adjourned.

Masked man wields knife in store raidA masked man brandishing a knife abandoned a robbery after staff went to help a threatened shop as-sistant.

The raider had demanded money at the WarnhamVillage, but other staff heard the threats and came to confront the man. The intruder ran out of the shop empty-handed, turning right into Church Street, Warnham.

Police are now seeking informa-tion about the attempted robbery, which happened about 4.20pm on Saturday.

The man entered the store dis-guised with a stocking mask. He is believed to be about 5'8", and of medium build and wore a cap and a black jacket.

Detective Sergeant Peter Yarrow, of Sussex Police, said: "I am keen to speak to anyone who saw a man hanging around the shop before the incident or running from the shop or has any information about who may have been responsible. If you can help please contact us via [email protected] or call us on 101 quoting reference 1034 of 19/09. You can also contact the independ-ent agency Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111"

£12million sports centre unveiled for Broadbridge HeathThe village of Broadbridge Heath is have the biggest public dry sports and leisure centre in Horsham dis-trict, costing about £12.3 million.

Residents are being asked for their views on the project and the scheme will be displayed at exhibi-tions at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre and The Pavilions in the Park at Horsham until October 20.

The current leisure centre was built about 30 years ago to bring to-gether in one building various sport and leisure activities which had previously taken place elsewhere on the site. But Horsham District Council says the old building was not designed as a multi-sport lei-sure facility and is expensive to run.

The proposed facilities would be developed in Broadbridge Heath next to the site of the existing lei-sure centre, and adjoining the bowls club. It is designed accommodate future population growth.

The scheme is subject to district council cabinet approval on No-vember 19 and council approval on December 9 2015. If given the go ahead, work could start in 2017, with a completion date in 2018.

It would include a six court sports hall, 80-station gym, cycle studio and three fi tness studios, café and extended catering facility which serving both the leisure centre and adjoining Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club, a sensory room and changing for indoor and outdoor

activity, including a “Changing Places” disabled changing facility.

The council says the scheme op-timises the use of the neighbouring bowls club and would also provide an outdoor running track, either in its current location or on a site nearby. A range of multi-use games areas behind the new centre would also be provided. The council says it will continue to work with the two amateur dramatic groups which use the existing centre to help them fi nd new premises.

Cllr Jonathan Chowen, district council deputy leader and cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “We have worked very closely with our partners and many groups over the last few years. We now want to give the general public an opportunity to see what we hope we will be developing very shortly.”

The proposed facilities would be developed in Broadbridge Heath next to the site of the existing leisure centre, and adjoining the bowls club

Marathon heart attack runner tackles another challenge

A Horsham man who survived a heart attack during a marathon run is taking on another challenge this weekend for the team that helped save his life.

Dave Hatton, 56, had a cardiac ar-rest whilst taking part in the Steyn-ing Stinger Half Marathon in March.

He became unwell and decided to return to the start where he collapsed in front of the Worthing St John Am-bulance team. The fi rst-aiders im-mediately gave him life saving fi rst aid, using CPR and an automatic de-fi brillator to restart his heart.

After months of recovery and re-habilitation, Dave, who is a keen runner and hill walker, has decided to thank the team by taking on a spon-sored two-day mountain challenge this Saturday and Sunday.

The RAB Mountain Marathon is

a fell running and navigation chal-lenge, and Dave will have to carry his tent, equipment and food to last the 24 hours, whilst gaining points along the way.

Dave is taking part with a friend of 30 years, Robin Wilson, 56, from Horsham, and aims to raise money for a cause which has become very close to his heart.

He said: “I really wanted to do something to raise money for an-other defi brillator for the SJA team in Worthing. That piece of equip-ment, and the expertise of the vol-unteers, helped to save my life that day. Without it, I wouldn’t be here to tell the tale.

“Twenty years ago I completed the ‘Bob Graham Round’ which is 42 Lake District Peaks in 24 hours. That was my last sponsored event, but the

life changing experience I’ve had this year has made me want to take up a fundraising challenge again.

“I am very passionate about the mountains and it is what I miss most, so although I won't be able to com-pete to my usual level, just taking part in the RAB Mountain Marathon is good enough.”Dave is a busi-ness development manager for For-est Litho Printers who are currently based in Partridge Green, but will shortly be moving to Billingshurst.

The team of volunteers who treat-ed Dave included Julie Beynon, John Beynon, Mike Kerley, Graham Un-derhill, Julie Underhill, Chris Hol-mes, Cliff Baddock (Unit Manager), Unal Salih, Steven Harwood, and Ka-ren Kennedy.

Local dinosaur renamed after town

Horsham Museum reports that the town has now given its name to what it calls a “unique dinosaur” because of a review of remains on display.

The museum says: “The dinosaur Horshamosaurus was an amazing creature that roamed the area 125 million years ago.

Artists may change names for commercial reasons, pop stars for selling records or to be more distinc-tive – but dinosaurs, what is in it for them? Nothing really, except when world leading scientists undertake research and discover that a dinosaur

is not what they originally thought. That is exactly what has just hap-pened to the dinosaur fossils on dis-play in Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. What is even more impressive is that the dinosaur has been renamed after the town – the new name is Hor-shamosaurus by Dr William Blows, a specialist in armoured dinosaurs.

These unique fossils were found by Sylvia Standing, a former museum volunteer in the 1980s, at Rudgwick brick pits. They featured in an exhi-bition on dinosaurs where leading experts of the day realised they were

not iguanodon bones, examples of which had been previously found in Horsham and Southwater; but were from some other dinosaur.

Dr Blows visited the museum and realised they were probably a type of Polacanthus - a bit like an armadillo on steroids with spikes sticking up and so were name Polacanthus Rudg-wickensis after the village they were found. However after nearly 20 years of further research, Dr Blows now knows that they are unique type of dinosaur as the diff erences in bones shows that they are distinctly diff er-ent to a Polacanthus. It is a new ge-nus of dinosaur: a 125 million year old Wealden armoured dinosaur which has been renamed Horshamosau-rus rudgwickensis. What also makes Horshamosaurus unusual is that it is of a type of dinosaur that had previ-ously been found in the United States and Asia but not in Europe.

Dr Blows has published his ex-tensive fi ndings in his new work on British Polacanthid Dinosaurs, in which he sets out in detail his rea-soning and evidence. Suffi ce to say experts in the fi eld will debate his research, but the thousands of visi-tors to the popular Horsham Muse-um are happy in the knowledge that the dinosaur is now named after the district.”

The Horshamosaurus fossils can be seen in Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum which is open 10-5pm Monday to Saturday - admission is free.

Virginia McKenna praises ElephantasticActress and wildlife pioneer Vir-ginia McKenna chose the winners of the Elephantastic elephant-themed colouring competition when she visited STRADA restau-rant in Horsham.

Afterwards Virginia said: “Anything that can inspire and involve children is always top of my list. El-ephantastic was just that because of the fantas-tic artwork of all the children. So much care and thought had gone into the pictures and the decoration of the elephants. I wanted them all to win.”

The town’s Elephantastic trail kept local youngsters entertained during the summer school break. Partnered by Horsham Rotary Club, PMW and Horsham Unlimited, the Elephantastic scheme has support-ed 66 charities, including interna-tional wildlife charity, the Born Free Foundation.

From more than 50 entries, Vir-ginia chose two winners; ‘Sunny’ created by 13-year-old Cai and ‘Sally the Stomping STRADA Elephant’ de-signed by Finlay, aged six. Both will

receive a hamper of goods given by STRADA and Born Free.

Virginia was joined at STRADA by ‘The

by Amanda H o l d e n , ‘Lady Lol-lipop’ de-signed by Vic Reeves, ‘ T r e v o r ’ c r e a t e d

by Darren Turner and

Pet tortoises in danger after burglaryTwo tortoises stolen from a house could die unless they are cared for properly, police have warned.

Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses to a burglary at a prop-erty in Forest Road, Colgate, near Horsham, between 7.15am and 5pm last Friday in which laptops and jewellery were also stolen.

The two Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoises were a male called Lew and a female called Lyn. Lew is about 8" long and has a darker shell in part, while Lyn is about 7" long and has an overall lighter shell.

PC Ollie Pullen said: "Tortoises need specialist care. Lew and Lyn are unlikely to survive if they are not looked after properly. To legal-ly own or sell a tortoise in the UK you have to have the correct cer-tifi cate as they are an endangered species, if you do not have the rel-evant paperwork then you commit an off ence.

“Burglary is a callous crime that has a signifi cant impact on the victim. This incident is even more traumatic for the victims as two much loved family pets have been stolen.

"I would urge anyone, whether it is a member of public or pet shop or reptile centre, who has been off ered a tortoise for sale in sus-picious circumstances to get in contact with us. You can call Sus-sex Police directly or contact crime stoppers anonymously. We need your help in reuniting Lew and Lyn with their family."Any witness or anyone with information is asked to email [email protected] or call 101, quoting serial 1086 of 18/09. Alternatively, call the in-dependent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

New £14 million hospice hope hinges on 600 homes schemeResidents get the chance next week to see how people with life-limit-ing conditions in the Horsham and Crawley area could have a new £14 million hospice to help them if a joint scheme for a centre and 600 homes is approved.

People will attend a consultation session lasting fi ve hours to discuss the scheme.

It will be held at Cottesmore Golf Club, near Pease Pottage, on Tuesday from 3-8pm.

Business owner Bill Bridges, from Horsham, has off ered Crawley-based St Catherine’s Hospice fi ve acres for a possible move from its current Craw-ley base.

But the scheme hinges on wheth-er councillors will also approve 600 homes near the proposed new hos-

pice site to the east of Brighton Road at Pease Pottage as part of the same application.

Billingshurst developer Thakeham says it expects to submit a planning application to Mid Sussex District Council by the end of this year.

Meanwhile the hospice and Thake-ham have put the scheme up for pub-lic discussion.

Mr Bridges, 74, runs the GWandG Bridges vehicle spares, salvage and disposal business based just off the A23 near Crawley and owns the 112-acres land to be considered for the hospice and housing.

If the houses were approved it would help the district council meet its obligations to the Government to fi nd enough land for new houses, but no formal application has yet been

made.Thakeham Homes, appointed by Mr

Bridges, will hold the public consulta-tion on September 29 from 3-8pm.

Managing director of Thakeham Robert Boughton said of the public consultation: “We really want to lis-ten to their aspirations for the area.”

The hospice wants to move because it needs more beds than its present 18 and improved facilities to help the growing number of people living with increasingly complex conditions and support their relatives.

The cost of the hospice is expected to be £12-14 million. The hospice says it has a large amount of this in reserves through legacies, including John Shemeld who left about £6 mil-lion, but it would still need to raise £5-7 million.

Concern over missing man

Police said on Wednesday they were growing concerned for a missing elderly man from Slin-fold.

Ronald Davey, 84, was last seen at 4pm on Sunday leaving the Red Lyon pub on The Street in the vil-lage. However it is believed he never went home.

His family were worried about not hearing from him so went round on Tuesday evening about 10pm and found he was not home. But lights and his television were on and there was food in the oven.

Inspector Andy Sanford said: "We are extremely concerned about Ronald as he has not been seen at all since Sunday and the fact that his dinner was waiting to be cooked in the oven, it seems he intended to go home.

"Ronald does have health con-cerns due to age including using a stick, pneumonia, and problems with his feet. He is described as white, around 5' but walks with a stoop and has thinning grey hair and was last seen wearing black trousers, a brown anorak and can-vas shoes.

"We are appealing to anyone who saw him on Sunday afternoon or knows where he might have gone. Anyone with information is urged to call us on 101 quoting serial 1349 of 22/09. Or if Ronald requires ur-gent medical attention 999."

At the time of the Post going to press the whereabouts of Mr Davey had not been reported.

Relatives praise Cowfold’s World War 1 exhibitionPhil DennettNews Editor

Relatives of Cowfold residents who served and survived in World War 1 praised the exhibition staged in the village hall.

More than 300 people visited the extensive and painstakingly re-searched displays that featured de-tailed information and memorabilia about the lives of some of the soldiers who returned from battle, as well as recording those who did not.

Chimney sweep David Parker, from Kirdford, showed the District Post reporter a 1918 picture of his grand-mother Dorothy and three uniformed Jefford brothers in the West Sussex family and said: “It is a good show the organisers have put on. They have done really well.”

Mr Parker, dressed as a wartime sergeant major, has given talks on World War One for about three years and said: “I had been doing World War 2 talks for a while. I got inter-ested in doing them on World War 1

when I found some medals in a bin.”Pensioner Mary Waller (nee Mat-

thews) looked at a display about her old St Peter's School Cowfold school teacher the late Reginald J P Quick, a Royal Naval Air Service survivor, and said: “He was really strict, he knew how to use the cane, but he was well respected.” Mr Quick was head teacher at 27 before the war and re-turned afterwards, living until 92.

John Barton, from Lancing, saw displays on several relatives including the Stoner brothers and his grandfa-ther Coldstream Guard George Bar-ton who survived his wounds and a gas attack but did not collect his medals and was said to have set fire to his uniform after seeing the hor-ror of trench warfare at places like Cambrai. He said: “They have done a great job. I supplied some of the in-formation but what I did not realise was that they had picked up the war diaries. They did really well to find all the information out.”

Letters of love, longing and des-peration were sent by Private George Buxton to his wife Mary in Cowfold, one saying with massive understate-ment : “I am so sorry not to have written more often, but life here is not all honey.” He survived the car-nage and died in 1951.

Sue Crofts, who organised the exhibition for the Cowfold Village History Society with Karen Macau-ley said: “It took us quite a time. In fact it’s fair to say it has taken over

our lives. I think some of the military stuff can be a little too dry so we tried to focus more on the men. Everyone does stories on those who died and their names are on memorials but not everybody does stories on those that returned and they have valid stories to tell.”Information is still coming in, and some was volunteered at the session on Saturday, and the group hopes to publish a book eventually.

Horsham District Council gave £500 towards the exhibition project.

At the same session on Saturday a new book on Cowfold’s history compiled and edited by Michael Burt was launched and this will feature in next week’s District Post. Cow-fold The History of a Sussex Village (ISBN 9781785890178) is available at £9.99, publisher Troubador, from local outlets.

Church celebrates 175th anniversary

Holy Trinity Church at Lower Beed-ing celebrates its 175th anniversary with a series of events in October.

The church reports: “A focal point of the Lower Beeding Community since the 19th century, a small village church is this year celebrating a ma-jor milestone.

After an impressive innings, Holy Trinity Church, Lower Beeding marks its 175 years of service in October with a weekend of special events.

But how has the church reached this landmark age?

It was back in the 1838 that a pri-vate Act of Parliament was approved for the ‘erection and endowment of a chapelry for the District of Lower Beeding in the County of Sussex’. Up until this point, the inhabitants of the Lower Beeding had a long trip to worship at their Parish Church in Upper Beeding.

There is often geographical confu-sion with regard to Upper Beeding, as it is in fact situated further south than Lower Beeding. Upper Beeding

was more of an established settle-ment and this is where the ‘Upper’ comes from, with reference to sta-tus. Lower Beeding was originally re-ferred to as Nether Beeding and was an area where livestock grazed and this is why ‘Lower’ was adopted in the name.

Two years after being built, the ‘Parish Church on Plummers Plain, Lower Beeding was dedicated to the Holy Trinity and consecrated’. In-

credibly, the cost of the church’s construction was a mere £550 (as cit-ed in the Act of Parliament). In real-ity it is highly likely that it cost more than this.

In 1862, at the expense of William Egerton Hubbard of Leonardslee, two side aisles were added to Lower Beed-ing. Holy Trinity was then in the care of Perpetual Curate until 1866, when Rev James Hare Masters became the fi rst vicar of the Parish.

And in 1885 the building was com-pleted when a bell tower was con-structed and 130 years down the line, the bells are still actively rung twice a week.

And so after 175 years, the Church reaches this momentous milestone and on the weekend of October 3 and 4 , the harvest themed festivities take place. On October 3, the church will host a Folk Jazz Concert, beginning at 7pm.There will be a special family harvest service on Sunday the 4th at 10am, with the cooking of local pro-duce.”

Casting for scarecrows in Broadbridge Heath

A cast of scarecrows will be bid-ding for Oscars when Broadbridge Heath stages its showcase of the bird frighteners this weekend.

Residents have been challenged to make their scarecrows on the theme of fi lm or television charac-ters when they show off their crea-tions outside their homes or other venues in the village.

On Saturday and Sunday the scarecrows will feature in a trail in the village that residents and visi-tors can walk around and enjoy.

Pictured is Macy Ryan, 10, a Warnham Primary School pupil from Broadbridge Heath, with a scarecrow on the theme of Yoda, the Jedi Master in the worldwide popu-lar Star Wars.

Pulborough’s big day on SaturdayPulborough stages its free Harvest fair tomorrow.

The event opens at 11.00 am and will celebrate some of Sussex’s fi n-est attractions with local delicacies, Sussex brewers, bakers, craftsmen, musicians and animals. This year’s principle sponsor is Domino’s who have recently opened a new pizza take away restaurant on Lower Street, Pul-borough, where people can have a go at making dough.

In the LMC Autos Arena attractions will include dog agility and displays from Huxley’s fl ying birds of prey,

with audience participation. There will be music and children’s games and MP Nick Herbert, will open the event and judge the event and judge the annual scarecrow competition.

The fair takes place in the fi eld op-posite the Chequers Hotel and the ad-jacent parish church.

Support from Harwoods and Pul-borough Medical Group means there will be plenty of free entertainment throughout the day, including music from the West Chiltington Silver Band.

The food and drink section, spon-sored by So-India, includes beer tents

with local beers from Hammerpot and Hepworths, wine from Hennings, a shepherd’s hut serving delicious Sus-sex lamb, hog roasts, pies, pizza, cakes and lots more.

Dogs are very welcome and can be entered on the day for Arun Vet’s fun dog show for £1 each, with prizes and rosettes for winners of each fun class.

Free parking is signed to local car parks, all within fi ve minutes walk of the Fair and for those with walking diffi culties there is a free shuttle-bus from the Lower Street Car park in Old Pulborough village.

Creating fun fi gures won three chil-dren an award.

Sainsbury’s Horsham and Food Rocks invited children to create a Crazy Food Figure for the Little Nibble Children’s Food Festival.

The Crazy Food Figure Zone fea-tured a wide range of foods provided by Sainsbury’s Horsham for children to create fun fi gures on the day, prizes for the winners of 3 age categories.

Pictured are the over-10 winner Ja-cob, 6-9 winner Amelia and fi ve and under winner Chloe. Their surnames were withheld.

More than 120 children took part and Derek Boarer manager of Sainsbury’s at Horsham said: “The children really enjoyed making their fi gures and as each day progressed the designs be-came more and more inventive.”

Golds scooped by Scoobydoo and Enid in Duke of Edinburgh awards

Scoobydoo and Enid combined to score a big Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award success.

They were names of teams from Collyer’s College in Horsham who successfully achieved the award af-ter completing a challenging four-day 50-mile final expedition in the Yorkshire Dales.

James Gordon, college head of faculty for business, sport and so-cial sciences said: “The award re-quires participants to learn new skills, provide a voluntary service to the local community and complete a residential for a week. The students

completed a difficult practice expe-dition over Easter and then a gru-elling qualifying expedition in the summer.”

The class of 2015 were celebrat-ed at Collyer’s and gave informa-tive and entertaining presentations about their experiences to the next generation of Duke of Edinburgh students. “Team Enid” comprised Emma Eastwell, Saoirse Freeman, Hannah Bowdery and Helen Tyrrell. “Team Scoobydoo” comprised Dan Joyner, Natasha Kindgdon, Johanna Lynn and Justin Smallwood.

Saoirse Freemen said: “It has been

the best experience of our lives so far. We’ve made friends for life and will never forget the fun we shared”

Justin Smallwood said: “We will never forget the memories made.”

The expeditions were led by Mr Gordon ably assisted by Melanie Ka-vanagh. The full Duke of Edinburgh programme at Collyer’s is expertly managed by Head of BTEC Sport, Dan Watson.

Mr Gordon said: “We are incredi-bly proud of these talented students. This is a fantastic achievement, par-ticularly given the poor weather that they had to overcome.”

Love dangerous at Chesworth FarmA lover that eats partners has found a home in the country at Horsham.

New grassland management sys-tem at Chesworth Farm countryside site has encouraged the Wasp Spi-der.

The creature is a very large, col-ourful specimen that builds orb shaped webs in grassland with a characteristic white zig-zag stripe that runs through the middle of its web.

It is hoped that the spiders will stay and breed on the farm.

But experts say mating for Wasp Spiders is a dangerous game. As spi-ders grow they moult their old skins to reveal a fresh soft new skin un-derneath. The smaller male has to time his approach to a female very carefully, waiting until she has just

had her last moult before developing into her mature form. At this time her new skin and particularly her jaws are still quite soft and he rushes in quickly to mate with her. Before this time she cannot reproduce, but if he waits too long she will have de-veloped hard powerful jaws and he is likely to get eaten.

Horsham District Council has been managing the grassland at Ches-worth Farm as wildfl ower meadow and this management has attracted the spiders to an undisturbed fi eld area at the edge of one of the mead-ows.

Male Wasp Spiders are quite small with bodies of about 0.5cm in diam-eter but the females are much big-ger, they can be more than 5cm in diameter, legs included.

Additional new arrivals at Ches-worth this month include 16 Hebri-dean sheep and 2 Herdwicks.

Deputy leader and cabinet mem-ber for leisure and culture Cllr Jona-than Chowen said:

“The new grassland management system at Chesworth Farm is a cel-ebration of the sheer breath of the services our council provides. Man-aging grassland like this to enhance the habitat encouraging a wider va-riety of wildlife species for our resi-dents and visitors to enjoy is a core aim of the council.

I would urge as many of you as possible to come along to the Ches-worth Farm site during the coming autumn months to enjoy the ani-mals there and the pond dipping on our new platform.”

Concerns over building at a High Street site in Henfi eld have led to its referendum being postponed.

Instead residents are being given the chance of more consultation about the Setyres site in the vil-lage’s High Street.

Horsham District Council and Henfi eld Parish Council say they have carefully considered a con-cern raised by some members of the Henfi eld community about the process of consultation on the Neighbourhood Plan, and decided to postpone the referendum, due

to take place yesterday. The concern that has been raised

is about the allocation of land at Setyres in the High Street, which is currently a commercial site. The site has been changed from a housing site allocation under neighbourhood plan policy 2 to a mixed use site allocation under neighbourhood plan policy 3.

In a statement issued by the district council the councils said: “After much consideration the councils have decided to postpone the referendum to enable a further round of consultation to take place across the district so that every resident in the plan area will have the opportunity to comment on this proposed change.

“Any comments that are re-ceived will go back to the examiner who will re-examine this point and then re-issue her report.

“It is not thought that the post-ponement of the referendum will cause a signifi cant delay to the adoption of the Plan.

“All postal votes received remain unopened and will be confi dential-ly destroyed. Everyone in Henfi eld Parish with a permanent postal vote will receive one automatically once the referendum is reorgan-ised.”

Jess named top dog at showJess the Border Collie won herself a photo-shoot with her charm and agility at a dog show.

It was all part of the well-attend-ed Holy Innocents Church annual fair and fun dog show at Southwa-ter, which attracted a great variety of breeds.

Agile Jess, 13 months old and shown by Tracey Cunnington’s, captured the “Prettiest Bitch in Show” award. She also performed well in the agility contest and won the coveted prize of a photo shoot from Art’s Eye Photograph-ic. Tracey said Jess’s mother was brown and white while her father was a long-haired blue merle, pro-ducing her unusual colouring.

The most handsome dog, pretti-est bitch and cutest puppy attract-ed beautiful examples. However, organiser Edwina Crutchley said: “We had to reduce the size of the Bonio to just half a Bonio, to get anyone to compete.”

Some of the owners produced moments of hilarity in agility classes when they tried to squeeze through the tunnel to show their dogs what to do. The fastest was obviously an expert agility com-petitor completing the circuit in just nine seconds. Most took over a minute.

Christine DoyleRestaurant Review

When asked to do a restaurant re-view, there is nothing as appealing than knowing its Indian Cuisine.

Mostly because it is my favour-ite of all foods and also it’s where I am the biggest critic. Some think an Indian meal is just that, ‘shall we go for an Indian?’ well for me it’s now ‘shall we go Blue India?’

I have not eaten here before, so this was a much anticipated meal, I took a good friend of mine, who

has frequented here and spoke very highly of the restaurant. Being veg-etarian, Mim was a perfect partner for this occasion as I enjoy the dif-ference in vegetarian dishes. As generous as I am in sharing, I was not going to forfeit my meat so I ended up a little more full!

Firstly, what a fantastic building, located on Billingshurst high street in the beautifully listed premises, charming and full of character. This was complimented with friendly and helpful staff. We were taken to our table, at the front of the restaurant

with beams and a fireplace; it just added something special to ambi-ence. We were offered drinks and the faithful poppadum’s - Can you review a poppadum? Oh yes! As the first offering it can set the president for the rest of my dining experience. I am sure I am not alone in experi-encing the disappointment of greasy odd tasting poppadum’s and chewy onions salad. So both Mim and I know we were off to a good start when this arrived fresh crisp and delicious.

Given the extensive menu, both

of us asked for a recommendations, I enjoy hot and flavoursome and I could ask for a better match than the ‘GURKHA REVENGE’ tender grilled chicken in garlic and chilli sauce, this was hot and full of flavour, se-lected from the chefs specials. This was served with a lovely mushroom Palau another firm favourite of mine and Bombay potato, and a fine sam-ple too.

Mim, also chasing her chilli fix was recommended the ‘Vegetarian Garlic Chilli’ this was also really tasty, with a good mix of veg, potato and spices.

The one thing that stands out is the texture and freshness of this dish, filling and not missing anything. I have to say, this is something that I would certainly have again,

Undoubtedly, this is a fantastic restaurant, already proving popular with the locals. It’s not a surprise the great success they have en-joyed. After sampling their culinary delights you will agree that there is nothing but the best at Blue India. With signature dishes that got my attention, Mim and I have already booked to return!

The Forest School Brings out the Best in Boys

When you visit The Forest School you immediately sense the “Forest buzz” – it’s a welcoming, vibrant and energetic school, where pupils are happy and enthusiastic about their learning.

Headteacher Siobhan Denning is proud of the boys and their achieve-ments, and rightly so: “Achievement is at the heart of everything we do” says Headteacher Siobhan Denning, “we know how to bring out the best in boys; challenging, stimulating and inspiring them to want to learn, whilst at the same time giving them the space to develop and grow during their time here.”

We’re delighted that year-on-year our boys achieve excellent GCSE re-sults, whatever their starting point. I’m as proud of the boys who achieved – and in many cases exceeded - their expected grades as I am of those boys who left with ten or more A*/A grades. This reflects the high quality

of teaching and the excellent learning environment that the school offers. It also shows the high value we all put on hard work – staff and pupils alike.”

However, there is so much more to becoming a Forest boy. There’s also a strong emphasis on developing the personal skills, on building positive relationships and supporting and helping each other. The ethos of the school creates a strong sense of be-longing and a happy, safe and nur-turing place enabling every pupil to achieve his potential.

At Forest there are four small schools, called Communities, within the larger school and each is led by a non-teaching Community Leader, whose time is dedicated to ensuring the care and well-being of every pupil in their Community. “This structure allows us to know each of our pupils personally and to build positive and supportive relationships with their families.”

In addition to this pupils are in mixed-age tutor groups, known as Vertical Tutor Groups, a support-ive system whereby older boys are able to guide younger pupils. “This is key to the excellent relationships that thrive throughout the school” Ms Denning added. “We truly believe that boys succeed when they feel happy, safe and secure.”

The school culture of care and sup-port begins before pupils even join. “What is an exciting time can also be a worrying time for both pupils and parents” said Community Leader Sue Perry. “It is important to us that every pupil is supported during the transition from Primary to Secondary School”.

“Our relationship with our pupils and their parents begins in Year 5. As part of our Transition Programme there are plenty of opportunities to meet staff and pupils and to experi-ence life at Forest.”

“It is also important that once here pupils settle in quickly and Discovery Week at the start of Year 7 plays a big part in this. Pupils spend the week at Lodge Hill Activity Centre and South-water Country Park, learning togeth-er, making new friends and getting to know us” she added.

Learning at Forest is all about edu-cating the whole child. As well as a broad and balanced curriculum the school provides a wealth of opportu-nities beyond the classroom, includ-ing drama and music productions, inter-school competitions, trips, challenges and community projects.

“Last year our science teams se-cured their place in the 2015 National Final of the STEM Fest competition, the Greenpower Team built and raced their electric car at Goodwood, we ran a fantastic number of activities for older members of our community, as well as offering a wealth of trips - from a Maths trip to Paris, soccer in

Salou, white-water rafting in the Ar-deche and skiing in Italy” said Gareth Good, Senior Assistant Headteacher.

“These opportunities are fun and exciting; they broaden the boys’ outlook and help to build their con-fidence and independence. We want our boys to enjoy life and to leave us as confident, well rounded young men, ready for the exciting demands and challenges ahead of them” Siob-han Denning added.

To really feel what life at Forest is like come and meet the pupils and staff. Prospective pupils, parents and members of the local commu-nity are warmly invited to visit the school during their Open Evening on Thursday October 3 between 5.30 and 8.00pm or by appointment dur-ing one of the Open Days Monday 5 to Wednesday 7 October.

Dark Star announce cooking competitionWest Sussex brewers, Dark Star Brewing Co, has announced a cook-ing with beer competition, to take place at their brewery tap, The Par-tridge, in Partridge Green.

The company has invited budding chefs to produce a dish, cooked with beer, and enter it into their ‘Cooking with Beer’ competition, with judging to be held at the Partridge in Par-tridge Green. The competition will take place on September 27 – the fi -nal day of the brewers annual green hop festival, Hopfest.

The best dish will win a place on the menu at the Partridge and the award-winning chef will get to take home their weight in beer, direct from the brewery.

‘We’re really excited to see what entrants can come up with. They can enter any kind of dish - sweet, sa-

voury, hot or cold, as long as beer has been used to make up the dish – al-though we don’t mean just supping a pint in the kitchen as they cook! .... Hopfest will feature some fantastic locally sourced food, from the likes of Garlic Wood Farm and the Hun-gry Guest, so we thought it was the perfect opportunity to look for more gastronomic talent from West Sus-sex ‘ said Stephanie Chitty, Market-ing Manager at Dark Star Brew Co.

Judging for the event will take place from 5pm on September 27, at the Partridge in Partridge Green, and all entrants will need to bring their dish to the pub ready for 5pm. Dishes must be plated and dishes that need reheating, should be brought to the pub by 4.30pm.

Charity to receive 5p carrier bag proceeds from Pets Corner

Sussex based charity, Canine Partners, is to receive all pro-ceeds, from the sale of single-use plastic carrier bags sold at Pets Corner, when the new 5p charge law comes into eff ect on October 5.

As part of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Af-fairs’ strategy to tackle waste and recycling, large retailers, employ-ing 250 or more full-time employ-ees, will need to charge their cus-tomers, a minimum of 5p, for most single-use plastic carrier bags from October.

Dean Richmond, Managing Di-rector at Pets Corner, said: “We are fully behind minimising un-

necessary wastage and are already committed to recycling 99% of our waste. We believe businesses have a responsibility to the community, which is why we support the won-derful people and genius dogs at Canine Partners.

In addition to donating all the proceeds to the charity, we will no longer be providing small plastic bags to customers so that we can encourage them to minimise un-necessary usage.”

Canine Partners was founded in 1990 and provides Assistance Dogs that are trained to help wheelchair users with a range of practical tasks.

Cat Harvey, Trust and Corpo-

rate Manager at Canine Partners, added: “We are extremely grateful to Pets Corner for their incredibly generous support.

Donating 5p per carrier bag to Canine Partners is a fantastic way of raising funds and awareness for the Char-ity. We look forward to continuing our success-ful charity partnership.”

About 400 people of all ages and cir-cumstances attended Horsham District Council’s fi rst “Jobs and Skills Fair” at the Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham.

The fair provided an opportunity for job seekers, those thinking of chang-ing jobs, considering apprenticeships or setting up their own businesses to meet with some 40 diff erent employ-ers, recruiters and career advisors.

The council said: “Feedback from exhibitors on the day was extremely positive, with at least 100 vacancies potentially being fi lled from the day’s visitors and the possibility of many more being fi lled in the days and weeks following the event.”

The fair was organised by the council in partnership with The District Post, Horsham Job Centre Plus, Collyers Col-lege and the Federation of Small Busi-nesses In total, over 600 opportunities were on off er for those visiting the fair.

He said: ‘Businesses are grow-ing and to keep pace with their growth they need to fi ll vacancies at a local level. This type of event is very positive

positive event saying: ‘We were made very welcome and we have had a suc-cessful time. We hope to have many new members of staff from this.”

Ease away your stresses and strains at Horsham’s Cranfold Physical Therapy Centre!

A sparkling new physical therapy centre has opened in Foundry Lane, Horsham under the management of Wendyanne Harrison, a highly ex-perienced and successful Chartered Physiotherapist.

Cranfold Physical Therapy started in Cranleigh 16 years ago and provides facilities in other locations in the dis-trict but Wendyanne says: “We’ve been working in and around Horsham for some time and as our case load has increased we’re really delighted to

have our own bespoke centre. I live lo-cally and love Horsham – it’s a vibrant growing town and we’re looking for-ward to helping more people here!”

Horsham’s impressive new Cran-fold Centre is a private multi-disci-plined practice offering a compre-hensive range of treatments. All of the physiotherapists are members of The Chartered Society of Physiother-apy and registered with the Health Professions Council. In addition to physiotherapy clients have access to a

sports medicine doctor, sports thera-pies, acupuncture, reflexology, reme-dial and lymphatic massages, podiatry and clinical pilates classes, too.

Broadcaster John Inverdale took time out from his busy Rugby World Cup preparations to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony, saying: “I played rugby with Wendyanne’s hus-band Guy at Esher and opened their Centre in Cranleigh a few years ago and know this area well. Horsham is an excellent choice of place and I’m

sure that clients will really appreciate the clear, bright layout at this terrific new Centre. Never mind the World Cup – opening this Centre is the big-gest event of the week!”

The enthusiastic guests at the opening were welcomed by Cran-fold’s exceptionally friendly team of experts and were clearly impressed by the state of the art equipment and the professionalism displayed, admi-ration for the facilities on view being appreciated with gasps of “amazing”

and “fantastic!”Apart from private clients the Cen-

tre also deals with NHS GP referrals with “Getting You Back On Track” as the dictum. Wendyanne added: “We have ample parking spaces and invite people to come in to have a look round and discuss any health worries that we could assist with – our aim is to revi-talise and energise clients. We have a great track record in doing that, so we look forward to making some new friends in Horsham!”

We are delighted to announce that we are now open for business in Grove

House, Foundry Lane, Horsham

STEAMER TRADING

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business ourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners

decided to retire. When we had nished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Crazy Glue offers honesty, humour and heart

Single Shoe Productions embark on a nineteen venue, Arts Coun-cil England backed tour of their touching and critically acclaimed theatre piece, Crazy Glue.

This autumn, fresh off their cel-ebrated performances at Germany’s Recklinghausen Festival and Physi-

cal Festival Chicago, London-based, Single Shoe Productions, will launch their debut tour of England and will reach The Studio at the Capitol, on October 2. Inspired by award-winning author Etgar Keret’s short story of the same name, Crazy Glue sees Tomas & Smith communicat-

ing, solely through sound effects and their own invented language, as they tell a universal story of love and loss.

When a newly wed couple find their first love has given way to the thornier terrain of married life, they discover how far they will go

to fix their relationship, even when it seems beyond repair. The physi-cal comedy of Buster Keaton, com-bines the with the madcap absurd-ity of Looney Tunes, as Single Shoe Productions plunge into the mad, messy, sticky side of love.

The project first began in June of 2012, when Co-Artistic Director, Tomas, discovered the short story on Smith’s bookshelf. Now, after three years of devising with seven international collaborators, Crazy Glue - the show inspired by that discovery - has toured to popular and critical acclaim, across three countries.

“As we explored Etgar Keret’s short story, we were intent on cre-ating a universally accessible piece. What developed, was a theatrical language that blends the physical-ity of silent films, with cartoon-like sound effects. When we then paired this language with complex themes of love and loss, we were excited at how it allowed us to focus on them with honesty, openness and hu-mour.”

They're a happy couple with a car in the garage, a chicken in the pot and a child on the way. But is that enough to make true love stick? Crazy Glue is a wordless play about the mad, messy, sticky side of mar-riage, told through physical com-edy, mime and a 1930's soundtrack.

Coming to The Capitol Theatre on the 2nd October.

Town Centre Fair set to return as part of Horsham Sports Club Firework Festival

Following the decision to end the half-term Autumn traditional fair in Horsham Town Centre in 2012, Horsham Sports Club has worked to-wards the return of this family event on their town centre ground in Crick-etfi eld Road, Horsham.

Because of the success of last year’s sold-out fi rework event a decision was made to increase the size of the fair and this will be included as part of this year’s fi rework festival on Saturday 31 October 2015.

Last year, hundreds of children and their families fl ocked to the club ground to sample the food stalls, enjoy the rides and of course the magnifi cent fi rework display by Aurora Fireworks.

Family Fun, Fair, Food and Fire-works.

This year’s event will include a se-lection of local street food outlets of-fering a range of foods such as hog roast, Malaysian curry, chilli, gourmet sausages and burgers, noodles and piz-zas and, not forgetting those with a sweet tooth…pancakes/crepes, donuts and a pick and mix.

Horsham brewery, Hepworths, will be providing a variety of ales and the well established local Harris’ fair-ground will include traditional fair-ground music, dodgems, carousel, paratrooper ride and small children’s rides and stalls.

After the fi rework display you will be able to enjoy a performance in the club by local 80’s cover band, Cinna-mon Street, which is included in the entrance price.

Avoid Disappointment - Tickets now on sale.

The event sold-out last year and re-stricted ground capacity means that ticket sales this year will be on a fi rst-come fi rst-served basis with early bird tickets available from 31 August 2015 at £4.00 per person for the fi rst 2000 .Ticket prices increase to £6.00 per person thereafter prior to the event and an on-the-gate price of £9.00 per person should any tickets remain. Free entry to all children under the age of 5.

Tickets are available from: Horsham Sports Club offi ce and bar (tel: 01403 254628); M&J News in Denne Road; Capitol Theatre and on-line via www.horshamsportsclub.com

The event is generously supported by Berkeley Homes, Lifestyle Ford, Vision Express, Barclays, The District Post, Strategic Internet Consulting and Strutt & Parker

Horsham CC’s Barry Peay wins an OSCACricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham Cricket Club’s Barry Peay has been honoured with an OSCA (Outstanding Services to Cricket Award), presented by Sussex Coun-ty Cricket Club CEO Zac Toumazi at a ceremony at the County Ground, Hove.

The organisers stressed that the recipient had to be someone who had

“made an outstanding diff erence for a substantial period” and Horsham Chairman John Carter told the District Post: “Apart from doing a fabulous job organising our annual County Festival for many years, Barry has been an ac-tive member since the 1960s when he was an excellent opening bat. He’s one of the three trustees of the club, deals with fund raising and still umpires to a very high standard. This accolade is richly deserved – I can’t think of any-

one better to receive it.” Barry said: “This is a great compli-

ment to Horsham Cricket Club and I’m pleased to accept it on that ba-sis, following in the footsteps of our present and past Presidents – Hugh Thomas and John Dew.”

Barry will now attend a special lunch at Lord’s where he will be one of the representatives from 38 coun-ties up for consideration for a national award.

Good news for Horsham Cricket ClubCricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Estimated accounts for this year’s Sussex County Cricket Festival at Horsham have been released, in-dicating a profi t of approximately £8,000 – Horsham Cricket Club’s share of which is £2,000.

These fi gures are the profi t from entrance and parking payments and do not include raffl e collections on the ground and income from the tea marquee. While the fi gures are modest, they are greeted with some relief by Horsham Cricket Club as losses were feared because the four day game versus Nottinghamshire

was over in three and the main money spinner – the attractive Sun-day one day cup game against Lan-cashire – was abandoned without a ball bowled, resulting in loss of rev-enue through two days of inactivity.

However, looking ahead and more optimistically, the much-vaunted suggestions for revision of the do-mestic county schedule, opposed by Sussex, will not be implemented in 2016. The proposals had included a reduced number of championship matches, which could have ad-versely aff ected Horsham’s chances of staging a four day game, calling the very viability of the Festival into question.

With positive vibes coming from Hove, Horsham Festival organiser Barry Peay told the District Post: “The situation for 2016 looks bet-ter than it might have been, but the format for next year remains un-certain. There is the possibility of the county season starting earlier, perhaps in the UAE, and the way in which the diff erent competitions are to be fi tted in to the crowded do-mestic schedule has yet to be decid-ed. We are hopeful for the continu-ation of the Festival along previous lines but await the late November announcement of the provisional fi xtures for 2016 with considerable interest”. Despite poor weather the Horsham Cricket Festival made a profi t

Borough gave Gillingham a roastingSaturday September 19 – London 3 South EastPulborough 33 - 5 Gillingham Anchorians

RugbyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Pulborough started their new sea-son in the best possible way with a strong bonus point win – beating their Kent opponents convincingly.

At half time Borough led 21-5 af-ter Gillingham had crossed the line right on the whistle, their only suc-cess in a game dominated by the

hosts. Team Manager Roger Hunt said:

“What an absolute cracker to get our season going! Brad Game scored two tries and Dan Bullock, Dan Paige and Frazer Oliphant-Hope one each, with Frazer kicking all of the con-versions. There’s been some com-ings and goings among the players, mainly due to taking up and return-ing from university placements, but we played very well. We need to tighten up on a few disciplinary things, such as off sides and giv-ing away silly penalties, but we’re very pleased with the start we made.

And the fi ne weather enabled us to launch our season in style with a post match hog roast after Gilling-ham rocked up with a full coach and enough players for a second team friendly!”

Tomorrow (Saturday Sept 26) Pul-borough travel to Beckenham to take on Old Dunstonians, who were beat-en 21-12 by Eastbourne last week.

Pulborough Team: Blunden, Den-man, Clay, Nicholls, Reed, Bullock, Ledra, Hodkins, Hoey, F. Oliphant-Hope, Game, Burfi end, Curtis, Mill-er, Paige. Subs: Scrase, G. Oliphant-Hope, Ledra.

Colin Curryer’s epic London to Paris bike ride

CyclingMartin Read - Sports Reporter

Cycling is more popular than ever with many enjoying going on rides. But, some rides are longer than oth-ers as Horsham Cycling’s Colin Cur-ryer will attest, having just complet-ed an epic London to Paris run, by far the longest challenge that he has ever undertaken.

300 miles in four days may sound like purgatory but 39 year old Colin had a special reason for tackling the ride: “My dad was diagnosed with Par-kinson’s a few years ago so I’ve been looking for ways of fund raising for that cause. I love cycling, enjoy a chal-lenge and London to Paris has always held an allure that I can’t quite ex-plain.”

Colin took his preparation seriously

with a “dry 100” – that number of days alcohol free, combined with healthy energy foods and considerably in ex-cess of 1,000 miles in training. Nev-ertheless, he was understandably ap-prehensive as the big day approached, exacerbated by the 5am alarm call, until after setting off from Blackheath with a sizeable group of riders, adren-aline quickly got him going.

The weather was generally kind (except when the heavens opened en route to Dover). Colin, though, said: “Day three was the toughest. It was fl at across the Somme battlefi elds but the two full days already in my legs and the relentlessly fl at landscape dragged. I never thought I’d miss hills!”

Yet, despite the toll on his body, Col-in found the ride slightly easier than expected and managed to escape with-out too many physical and mechanical

problems after surviving a scare when the front grill of an oncoming lorry loomed menacingly. But the elation of fi nishing down the Champs Elysees from the Arc de Triomphe to the Eiff el Tower richly compensated for the de-manding preparations and the rigours of the ride, Colin saying: “It was quite emotional! My main thoughts were with my dad who had inspired me to do the ride.”

After the return on Eurostar had provided some welcome respite Colin was pleased to be reunited with his wife. He has raised over £1600 towards his £2000 target – anyone wishing to contribute can do so through https://www.justgiving.com/Colin-Curryer1

Would Colin consider another long ride? “Not sure! Paris to Geneva or Venice to Rome appeal, but I need to get my breath back fi rst!”.

Gulf in class evident in Horsham’s heavy defeat

Saturday September 19 - London 2 South EastTunbridge Wells 75 – 29 Horsham

RugbyRichard Ordidge – Horsham RUFC

In their fi rst league game of the sea-son away to Tunbridge Wells, Horsh-am faced a reality check of what they can expect to face in London 2 South East following promotion from Lon-

don 3 South East. The gulf in standard between the

two leagues was clearly evident as pre-season favourites Tunbridge Wells ran out 75 – 29 winners over visitors Horsham.

In mitigation, Horsham were miss-ing inspirational captain Paul Talbot, as well as Arun Thompson and Andy Gray in the back row who would have tightened up Horsham’s defence.

There was little sign of what was to

follow in the fi rst quarter. After Chaz Spence scored for Tunbridge Wells under the posts, Horsham’s Tom Johnson slotted a penalty and then on 19 minutes Johnny Ordidge was fi rst to react to a loose ball running in under the posts from 20 yards. With the try converted Horsham were leading 10-7 and it appeared to be game on.

This brought Tunbridge Wells to their senses. Horsham found them-selves being cut to shreds as they con-

ceded a further fi ve tries in 20 minutes before half time from Tom George, Ben Kennard, Nick Doherty, Hayden Pope and Charlie Harding. Only some brave last ditch tackling from Will Bell and Declan Nwachukwu kept the scoreline down to 40-10 at the break.

Horsham started the second half brightly and after some good han-dling in the three quarters, Bell and Nwachukwu combined well for Bell to sprint down the left touchline from

Chesworth Rovers overcame a plucky Hurstpierpoint side that tried to play the game the right way and continued to do so until the fi nal whistle in this Fred Sparkes Cup tie. After a slow start once Chesworth scored the fl oodgates opened result-ing in them scoring eight goals in the last 20 minutes of the fi rst half with Michael Murray bagging four, Ewan Rennison two, Connor Jones one and an own goal completing the fi rst half strikes. Chesworth were well held by Hurstpierpoint for much of the sec-ond half however Jones and Rennison scored again, with Tim Bennett and Ben Peppercorn, opening his Ches-worth account, rounding off the scor-ing for a comfortable win.Horsham Sparrows

Under 9 – The fi rst game of the sea-son saw the team play away to Par-tridge Green. Both games went the way of the hosts but the teams played well.

Under 12 – Lost at home to Lower Beeding and Handcross. The fi rst half ended goalless after both teams cancelled each-other out. The away

side scored early in the second half and then doubled their lead through an unfortunate own goal. Sparrows rallied to hit the bar and go close but could not make the required break-through. MOTM was debutant Leo.

Under 15 – The team hosted divi-sion A side Brockham Badgers and conceded two early goals then rallied with a goal from George V. The second half remained close with Brockham getting a third in the last few minutes. This was a strong performance by the whole team that capped by a man of the match Harry M.

Under 16 – The U16 Boys team faced their fi rst defeat of the season as they hosted Steyning Town Community, in the fi rst round of the Edwin Hill Cup Competition.

Marcus O scored for Sparrows but Steyning replied with two goals to lead 2-1 at half time. Sparrows for-tunes changed early in the second half as Steyning took their third goal, followed by two more to a full time score of 5-1. Man of the match was Jack B.

Under 11 girls – To start the season, the League arranged a mini tourna-ment which was the girl’s very fi rst games for the club. With 2 wins out of 3 they acquitted themselves admira-bly and had will now progress to the next mini league games

Under 14 girls – Travelled to Wor-thing for their fi rst game of the sea-son buoyed by the success of their Germany tour and with 2 players making debuts.

A defl ected shot opened the scoring for Worthing who grabbed a second before half time. Two further Wor-thing goals in the second half gave Worthing a 4-0 victory. There were good debuts from Liberty and Charley but girl of the game was Ella T with a strong performance in midfi eld.

Horsham Sparrows U14 and U16 girls complete German football tour

Junior FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Following a visit to Sparrows day last year by German club FFC Mon-tabaur twenty girls from Sparrows U14 & U16 teams went on a return visit.

After a ten hour coach trip the Sparrows arrived at their destination of the Youth Hostel in Montabaur, Germany where they met their host and Chief Executive of FFC Monta-baur, Alfred Muellers.

The fi rst game for the Sparrows U14 side was against local team TUS Ahrbach. The facilities were fabulous

and everyone was made to feel very welcome. In an exciting game both teams acquitted themselves really well but the German team came out victorious.

The following day both teams got to don their kits in games against the host’s team of FFC Montabaur. The U14’s had a much deserved victory with great performances through-out the team but the U16’s came up against an extremely skilful and dis-ciplined side who play at the top level for their age, despite losing the game the U16’s kept trying right to the fi -nal whistle.

The next day everyone travelled to

Andernach for the U16’s fi nal game. Again the facilities were exceptional but this time the teams were more evenly matched and the Sparrows girls fi nished the fi rst half with a 2-0 lead. However the second half saw some missed opportunities for Spar-rows and the German girls fought back to tie the game 2-2.

In between the football the girls went on tours of Montabaur, Kob-lenz and had a river boat tour on the Rhine.

The club thank the German FA, who part funded the trip, and especially Alfred Mueller and FFC Montabaur for making it a week to remember.

halfway to score. The mini revival was short lived however as Spence, Hard-ing and Lennin Malifa ran in further tries to the take the score to 61-17 af-ter 55 minutes. After a succession of penalties and two yellow cards, Simon Gaynor scored from a pushover scrum to reduce the defi cit.

Shortly afterwards Nwachukwu raced through to score from the half-way line for the bonus point try to reduce the defi cit to 61-29 but then Harding returned to the fi eld and fl y half Pope both scored their second tries to complete the scoring.

Horsham coach Richard Bell was refl ective in defeat. “We started well but we did not read situations and they executed a simple game plan very well running at our weak areas. At times I felt we looked fl at in the midfi eld area but Declan, Will Bell and Richard Tredgett stood out for their tackling. The league will be tough this year and we now know the level that is required. We haven’t become a bad side over-night. We will work harder at training this week and you will see a diff erent Horsham next Saturday.”

Rampant Hornets hammer the league leaders

Saturday September 19 - SCFL Pre-mier DivisionHorsham 4 – 1 Lancing

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Lancing came to Gorings Mead head-ing the table with a 100% record. They left - still heading the table -

but with their perfect start in tatters after being torn apart by a very fl uent and clinical Horsham side.

Having only conceded fi ve goals in their opening seven matches, Lancing uncharacteristically fell behind after three minutes when their ‘keeper Callum Fidler allowed a straightforward Joe Shelley down-ward header to go under him and

cross the line. For a ‘keeper with such a decent record this season Fidler again was at fault seven min-utes later when he allowed a Darren Boswell cross to go unchallenged and then hesitated to allow Terry Dodd to scramble the ball past him for 2-0.

Straight from the restart Lanc-ing showed a bit of the form that has given them such a high fl ying start

when Lewis Finney got behind the Hornets defence and beat Gareth Williams with a well taken fi nish to reduce the defi cit.

In the 34th minute Horsham re-gained the two goal buff er when in similar style to the Lancing goal Boswell got behind the visitor’s de-fence and made no mistake with only the stranded Fidler to beat. Horsham

continued to press and came close to a fourth through both Dodd and Pamment but were unable to add to the score before the break.

Despite a short early spell in the second half where Lancing looked dangerous the Hornets continued to dominate the play. Horsham got their reward with a fourth goal that eff ectively ended the match as a con-test in the 62nd minute when sub-stitute Samir Hadi connected with a Shelley head on to stab the ball over the line off the post. In the unusual position of being 4-1 down the visi-tors become frustrated collecting a couple of yellow cards and a straight red for Ben Bowra after he caught Jordan Clarke with a late tackle with ten minutes remaining.

Horsham saw out the last minutes in comfortable fashion to take all three points from this dominant and decisive win over a good side and to earn back the badge of championship favourites.

Horsham team: Williams, Hunt (Alex Duncan 73 mins) Knee, Clarke, Jones, Farmer (Gilbert 69 mins) Shel-ley, Lewis, Dodd, Pamment, Boswell (Hadi 58 mins).

Solitary Schaaf strike sinks Mavericks

Saturday September 19 - SCFL Premier DivisionWorthing United 0 - 1Horsham YMCA

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Horsham YMCA extended their un-beaten start to the season to twelve games last Saturday, as they battled to a narrow 1-0 Premier Division win away at Worthing United.

Sam Schaaf’s fi rst half strike was enough to separate the two teams, but YM manager Peter Buckland was disappointed with his side’s ‘tired’ display.

“It was another under par perfor-mance, but three points. We won’t appreciate the three points from this game until the end of the season, and

we might look back and remember the day that we were not very good at Worthing United, but won. They (Worthing) actually surprised me somewhat. I wouldn’t say that they were a better footballing side than us, but they worked harder. A lot of our players weren’t quite at it today. We’re only a dozen games in, but to me some of them looked tired. We defi nitely looked lethargic.”

The hard working hosts were per-haps deserving of a point, but three frantic fi rst half minutes in an other-wise uneventful encounter ultimate-ly decided the fi xture. After some early Worthing pressure, visitors’ defender Luc Doherty’s searching ball forward freed Nick Sullivan and he was upended in the penalty area by Grant Philpott. Dan Sullivan’s re-sulting spot kick was then saved by

Mavericks’ goalkeeper Matt Evans, although the drama wasn’t fi nished yet. The stopper immediately rolled the ball out to Philpott, but he was robbed of possession by striker Sul-livan, returning to the fi eld from the corner fl ag following treatment on the sideline, who squared for Schaaf to tap home from close range.

Buckland concluded: “It was a dis-appointing performance, but it’s not a disaster. I said to the players before the game that I couldn’t see us con-ceding, and I can’t really recall any-thing too close to them scoring, so it was just a question of nicking a goal or two.”

YM Team: Fox, D. Sullivan, Do-herty, Gathern, Evans, Dugdale (c), Hunter (Gedling 62), D. Brown, N. Sullivan, Wright (Hibbert 43), Schaaf. Unused subs: White, Hosier.

Heath keeper Chester helps secure away pointSaturday September 19 - SCFL Premier DivisionAFC Uckfi eld 1 - 1 Broadbridge Heath

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Broadbridge Heath had an inspired display from goalkeeper Michael Chester to thank for this away draw that extended their unbeaten run to six games.

Chances came and went for both sides in the open-ing twenty minutes; Familton, Andrade and the i n - f o r m B h u j u n for Heath and twice Grenall had eff orts for the hosts, one of which forcing the fi rst of a number of fi ne stops from keeper Chester.

On 22 minutes however it was Heath who grabbed the opening goal. Tom Familton played a long pass into the path of Scott Weller on the left fl ank, the Heath midfi eld player cut inside a defender and hit a right foot shot wide of home ‘keeper Collick.

The home side rallied and Ches-ter was called upon to pull off an in-credible save from Uckfi eld’s Steve Dallaway. Then what looked a cer-tain penalty when Merv Bhujun was dragged back in the area was turned down by referee Humphries leaving Heath to go into the break with their slender lead.

Much the same was to follow in the second half with Bhujun and Godfrey going close for Heath and Chester again producing heroics in goal to once again deny Dallaway.

A reshuffl e following an injury to the infl uential Ollie Moore unset-tled Heath and gave the home side increased possession in midfi eld. Again Chester was called on to keep

his side in the game, this time tipping a shot from Scott

Taylor over the bar. Chester was fi nally

beaten in the 84th minute

when a foul in the area by Famil-ton was punished with a p e n a l t y that Tay-lor des-p a t c h e d

passed the Heath man

of the match for the equal-

iser. There was still time for Bhujun

and Mcdermott to have secured all three points but the

fi nal whistle left each team with a deserved point apiece.

Heath Manager Steve Painter said of his keeper, “Michael (Chester) was superb today one particular save to his right was unbelievable. We didn’t play well and we were hanging on at times but on this pitch they will cause a lot of team’s problems but despite that we should have won the game in the fi nal minute”.

Heath team: M.Chester, Robin-son (Sultan 70), Wicking, S.Chester, Familton, Waddingham, Moore (Mc-Dermott 55), Godfrey, Andrade, Bhu-jun, Weller (Legrange 80).

Slick Horsham looking good as they hit seven

Tuesday September 22 - SCFL Pre-mier DivisionHorsham v Wick & Barnham

Following the emphatic demoli-tion of table toppers Lancing at the weekend the Hornets welcomed third bottom Wick & Barnham United to Gorings Mead on Tuesday evening and gave them an even big-ger thumping.

Horsham dominated from start to fi nish, knocking seven past visiting ‘keeper Billy Nash in a display that demonstrated that manager Dom Di Paolo has the Hornets buzzing.

Another early goal set Horsham on their way as it did last weekend. This time Jordan Clark began and fi nished a fi ne move to put his side 1-0 with 5 minutes gone.

The visitors had to use one of only two substitutes they had available and were then soon two down. Minutes after Darren Boswell had an eff ort well saved by Nash the Horsham man picked out Joe Shelley who, with only the ‘keeper to beat, found the bottom corner.

Immediately upon the restart Hor-sham gained possession and after a good passing Samir Hadi put Bradley Lewis through to make it 3-0 with 27 minutes played.

Just before the break the visitors had their fi rst shot on goal; an eff ort by Wick’s Joe Matthews being com-fortably saved by ‘keeper Williams to leave the Hornets a coasting three goals to the good at half time.

If the match was not over at half time it was within 2 minutes of the restart when a good pass from Terry Dodd put Boswell in on the ‘keeper Nash who he rounded and fi nished in superb fashion. Three minutes later it was Dodd’s turn to get on the score sheet when after an error in the visi-tors shell-shocked defence he made

it 5-0 from close range. Dodd was then replaced by Scott Murfi n but the change never put the Hornets out of their stride as the continued to pound the Wick defence. Just under the hour it was six when Boswell hit his sec-ond and probably the best goal of the match. Again through one on one with Nash he dummied the stranded ‘keeper before chipping him to fi nd the net for a superbly taken goal.

The goals for the evening came to an end in the 65th minute when Adam Hunt’s cross was met by substitute Murfi n who’s shot was blocked only to fall to the waiting Shelley who was left to tap in number seven. A number of chances came and went for Horsham to hit double fi gures but in the end seven proved to be the magic number.

Tomorrow (Saturday Sept 26) Hor-sham visit the leagues whipping boys St Francis Rangers, who lost 0-11 at home to Pagham last weekend. Per-haps this Saturday the Hornets will hit double fi gures; playing as they have in the last two matches you wouldn’t bet against it.

Tuesday September 22 - SCFL Premier DivisionEast Preston 2 - 2 Broadbridge Heath

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Broadbridge Heath extended their unbeaten run to seven matches and maintained their top half po-sition with this point at East Pres-ton.

However It looked very unlikely that Heath would take anything from this match at half time as they trailed their hosts 2-0 at the break.

Alfi e Gritt gave East Preston the lead in the 8th minute and when Dan Huet added a second fi ve min-utes before half time things looked bleak for Steve Painter’s side.

Whatever manager Painter said at half time produced a much better second half. Heath had numerous chances to get back into the game and just after the hour mark fi nally got a goal; Scott Weller scoring on 62 minutes.

With that one goal in the bag it did not take long for Heath to com-plete the comeback when striker Tiago Andrade levelled four min-utes later.

Heath now go into tomorrow’s (Saturday Sept 26) home match against Arundel looking to continue the run of form for eight unbeaten.

Last weekend two young Christ’s Hospital rugby players had the op-portunity of a lifetime after they were invited to train with members of the All Blacks World Cup squad at Harle-quins RFC.

Lennox An-yanwu (U15) and Samuel Odu (U14), b o t h m e m b e r s of the Har-l e q u i n s Academy, were part of a special group of 23 young rugby players who had won their chance having been identi-fi ed the previous Sunday as having outstanding potential when 92 young rugby players were as-sessed.

After enjoying a light breakfast followed by some warm-up exer-cises the young players were joined – much to their surprise – by New

Zealand fl y-half, Dan Carter, no. 8 Kieran Read, scrum-half Aaron Smith and hooker Keven Mealamu. For the next hour the young hope-fuls were put through their paces by the international rugby stars who

gave them valuable insight into the correct meth-

At the end of the session

they chatted at length with the youngsters and posed for photo-graphs.

125 years at Horsham Lawn Tennis ClubTennisDave Smith – Sports Editor

In its 125th anniversary year, Hor-sham Lawn Tennis Club held its end of grass court season tournament in lovely September weather condi-tions and on a playing surface that was in its usual excellent condition; thanks to the skills of groundsman Jim Askew and his team.

After a hard fought tournament between the club players, Kerem Ergene and Christine Clarke even-tually came out victorious and were

presented with their awards by the Club Secretary Debbie Malins prior to an end of season after tournament supper.

To celebrate the club’s 125 years in existence several players brought along old racquets to show to the younger members. All of the young-sters commented on the heavy weight and small head size of the racquets, some of which were ‘state of the art’ in their day. No records relating to the setting up of the Club remain in its possession but by 1892 members played on a court in Wor-

thing Road near a brewery, probably on the site of the new Waitrose and John Lewis development.

In 1894 Horsham Cricket Club cre-ated lawn tennis courts close to its cricket pitch in Cricketfi eld Road and this location is where they have re-mained ever since.

The club have a 1902 thank you note that went to a Mr. Luing for providing a fl ock of sheep over the winter months to improve the grass. In its fi rst decades lawn tennis was a game for the wealthy young mid-dle and upper classes. Several local

roads and landmarks were named after the families of the tennis club members from its early years - Pad-wick, Bostock, Agate, Prewett, Mil-

lais and Allcard amongst them. Nowadays, the club draws its

members from all walks of life and all ages from 4 to 80+.
