A remarkable proportion of AAAI members have chosen to enroll in the AAAI-M as well. We now have well over 200 members, many of whom are actively working in the field of medical AI . A membership list is enclosed to help members identify others in the field. Much of our first year has been spent getting organized. We had a good turnout at the first AAAI-M business meeting held in Pittsburgh during the NCAI, and several suggestions were made regarding the most appropriate role of the AAAI-M in the years ahead. I have thus far concentrated on providing a mechanism for notifying one another of publications relevant to the field, on helping to identify those individuals who are most active in the AIM community, and on encouraging efforts to increase the visibility, coordination, and impact of the field -- both within the larger AI community and within the field of medical computer science. It's our hope that the communication and coordination issues will be well handled by a mailing to the membership two to three times per year. In addition, we've arranged to facilitate on-line communication via ARPANET and CS-Net for those who have access to one or both. Mail sent to AAAI-M§SUMEX-AIM will automatically be forwarded to all members who have electronic mail addresses on one of the two networks (but please don't try this until after January 1, 1983). What I need from you in order to make all this work is information and suggestions. First, review the membership list, find your name, and let me know if there is an error in name or address. In addition, check the electronic mail address we've noted there, if any, and let me know if yours is incorrect or missing. Then send me a brief description of your specific AIM research interests and we'll update the membership file accordingly. Second, whenever you write (or encounter) an article of interest to the AIM community, send a copy to the AAAI-M liaison (currently me, but we'll be electing a successor in the autumn of 1983). We'll compile titles and abstracts for distribution in the next AAAI-M membership mailing. Although we agreed in August that this would be a good idea, I have thus far received no articles to include. I see this as one of the major potential benefits of AAAI-M membership, but early announcements of what is going on in AIM research labs will only be possible if you remember to tell us what you are doing. Third, send announcements or other information that you would like to see included in a mailing. The number of mailings will largely depend upon the amount of information received (as well as on my own energy and the funds available from AAAI to cover mailing expenses).

From: Ted Shortliffe, AAAI-M Liaison

I'm pleased to have this opportunity to bring you up to date on theAAAI-M as the organization enters its second year. A remarkable proportionof AAAI members have chosen to enroll in the AAAI-M as well. We now havewell over 200 members, many of whom are actively working in the field ofmedical AI . A membership list is enclosed to help members identify othersin the field.

Much of our first year has been spent getting organized. We had agood turnout at the first AAAI-M business meeting held in Pittsburgh duringthe NCAI, and several suggestions were made regarding the most appropriaterole of the AAAI-M in the years ahead. I have thus far concentrated onproviding a mechanism for notifying one another of publications relevant tothe field, on helping to identify those individuals who are most active inthe AIM community, and on encouraging efforts to increase the visibility, coordination, and impact of the field -- both within the larger AI communityand within the field of medical computer science. It's our hope that thecommunication and coordination issues will be well handled by a mailing tothe membership two to three times per year. In addition, we've arranged tofacilitate on-line communication via ARPANET and CS-Net for those who haveaccess to one or both. Mail sent to AAAI-M§SUMEX-AIM will automatically beforwarded to all members who have electronic mail addresses on one of the twonetworks (but please don't try this until after January 1, 1983).

What I need from you in order to make all this work is informationand suggestions. First, review the membership list, find your name, and letme know if there is an error in name or address. In addition, check theelectronic mail address we've noted there, if any, and let me know if yoursis incorrect or missing. Then send me a brief description of your specificAIM research interests and we'll update the membership file accordingly.

Second, whenever you write (or encounter) an article of interest tothe AIM community, send a copy to the AAAI-M liaison (currently me, but we'llbe electing a successor in the autumn of 1983). We'll compile titles andabstracts for distribution in the next AAAI-M membership mailing. Althoughwe agreed in August that this would be a good idea, I have thus far receivedno articles to include. I see this as one of the major potential benefits ofAAAI-M membership, but early announcements of what is going on in AIMresearch labs will only be possible if you remember to tell us what you aredoing.

Third, send announcements or other information that you would liketo see included in a mailing. The number of mailings will largely dependupon the amount of information received (as well as on my own energy and thefunds available from AAAI to cover mailing expenses).

Finally, send suggestions to me if you have other ideas about what'the AAAI-M ought to be doing. One suggestion from Bob Engelmore and LouRobinson of the "AI Magazine" is that we encourage frequent submissions ofarticles from the AAAI-M membership. There is a medically oriented articlecurrently under review, and it would be great to see more appear in thefuture.

For now, Ido have a few announcements. First, you should have heardby now about the first book devoted to the subject of AI in medicine. Editedby Peter Szolovits and entitled "Artificial Intelligence in Medicine", thevolume appeared this summer and is published by Westview Press. It is basedon a series of papers presented at a AAAS meeting a few years ago, andincludes articles on INTERNIST/CADUCEUS, MYCIN, TEIRESIAS, GUIDON, ABEL, theDigitalis Advisor, CASNET , and EXPERT. Much of the book is excellent andI'd suggest you take a look at it if you haven't already done so.

In addition, there are several medical computing meetings in 198 3at which there are proposed sessions on AI and decision making. Among theseis the AAMSI meeting in San Francisco next May for which I have enclosed abrochure. The first meeting last year was well recieved, and this year Dr.Bob Blum is chairing the session on medical decision making and AI . TheSymposium on Computer Applications in Medical Care, which has evolved intothe biggest annual medical computing meeting, is scheduled for October 23-26in Baltimore. Notifications of intent to submit a paper are due February 14,and information can be obtained from Ruth E. Dayhoff, MD, SCAMC, 2300 XStreet, NW, Washington, DC 20037. Additional meetings of interest includethe NCAI in Washington in August, IJCAI in Germany (also in August), MEDCCMPin September, and the Society of Medical Decision Making meeting in Torontoin early October. I'm sure I've missed others; in the future I hope thatconference organizers will specifically send announcements for inclusion inthese mailings.

On a more personal note, I'd like to announce the recent approval byStanford of a formal training program in Medical Information Sciences. Wewill be offering both MS and PhD degrees in the field beginning in the autumnof 1983 and would be happy to send copies of the approved curriculum toindividuals who are interested in learning more about it. Just send a noteto Darlene Vian (VIAN@SUMEX or the address listed with my name below).

In closing, let me remind you once again to send me abstracts ofyour publications in the AIM field as they are completed and to let me knowif your entry on the enclosed membership list is inaccurate or incomplete. We'll plan on another mailing in mid-1983 after we begin to receive enoughabstracts and announcements to warrant putting together another memo. I'lllook forward to hearing from you if you have other ideas or suggestions toconvey

Best wishes for a joyous holiday season.
