II - GHS Clinical Trials Report 1st Quarter, Fiscal Year 2018

1 Clinical Trial: For the purpose of this report, a clinical trial is defined as a prospective, biomedical or behavioral research study of human subjects that is designed to answer specific questions about biomedical or behavioral interventions (drugs, biologics, treatments, devices, or new ways of using known drugs, biologics, treatments, or devices). This definition incorporates the major points of the term as defined by the NIH, DHHS, ICMJE, ICH GCP E6, FDA, WHO and the clinicaltrials.gov website. 2 Other types of clinical trials include prevention, treatment, vitamin, symptom management and radiation.

Fiscal Year 2018 – Quarter 1 The Office of Sponsored Programs reports that GHS faculty and staff members submitted the following 24 proposals, totaling $4,085,081, during the first quarter of fiscal year 2018. Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Elena Huston Nurse-Family Partnership National Service Office Nurse-Family Partnership - Laurens County Expansion This grant will fund the addition of three new Nurse Home Visitors to serve Laurens County. Project Dates: 01/01/2018 - 12/31/2020 Total/Direct Cost: $474,675; Cost Share: $949,349 Dr. Amy Crockett March of Dimes Supporting South Carolina OB Providers to Reduce Preterm Births through CenteringPregnancy Group Prenatal Care** This project will support the obstetric providers who are implementing CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care throughout SC by providing training, technical assistance, and materials. It will continue to provide data analysis of the birth outcomes resulting from CenteringPregnancy. Project Dates: 02/01/2018 - 12/31/2018 Total: $25,929; Direct Cost: $23,572; Indirect Cost: $2,357 Dr. Kacey Eichelberger National Institutes of Health (NIIH) via University of North Carolina Medical Optimization and Management of Pregnancies with Overt Type 2 Diabetes (MOMPOD)* This is a multi-site randomized clinical trial in which the use of insulin + placebo vs. insulin + metformin will be evaluated in pregnant women with a diagnosis of overt type 2 diabetes mellitus. It will assess whether pharmacological treatment of overt type 2 diabetes mellitus during pregnancy with insulin + metformin improves neonatal outcome or maternal morbidities. Project Dates: 01/01/2018 - 06/30/2021 Total: $78,826; Direct Cost: $50,400; Indirect Cost: $28,426 Dr. Jeffrey Elder Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer via USC Educational Foundation Immunologic and Inflammatory Markers of Endometriosis Associated Ovarian Cancers This project will explore whether the genetic characteristics of endometriosis that allow its unrestricted growth, when combined with the local inflammation that the endometriosis creates, cause some women with this disease to develop cancer. Mike Walls Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Public Access Bleeding Control Stations The grant requested support to purchase public access bleeding control stations, which would assist in the event of a mass casualty incident or an incident involving severe bleeding. Dr. Anjani Jammula Pfizer via University of South Carolina Integrating a Personalized Patient-Specific Priority Tool to Enhance Shared Decision Making for Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease GHS will serve as the clinical research partner by allowing the project to be conducted in the GI Clinic. GHS will provide feedback on how to make the survey tool fit within the flow of clinical care provided for IBD patients and how the priority graphic can be designed to be most useful for providers. Project Dates: 01/01/2018 - 12/31/2019 Total: $14,846; Direct Cost: $11,598; Indirect Cost: $3,248 Dr. Meenu Jindal American Cancer Society Decision Aid Implementation for Colorectal Cancer Screening in Primary Care Settings This project is aimed at increasing opportunity for discussion between primary care physicians and patients regarding colorectal cancer screening. Decision aid will be used to help initiate discussion regarding screening intervention. This project will also involve education of internal medicine residents in shared decision making and use of decision aid. Project Dates: 01/01/2018 - 12/31/2018 Total/Direct Cost: $5,000 Michelle Stancil Department of Defense via Clemson University STOP T2DM: Redesigning the DoD's Mobile Health Care Environment for prediabetic patients seeking to prevent incurring type-2 diabetes* GHS will provide clinical insight to advance the MHEC technology to support individuals with prediabetes make behavior modifications to prevent development of type 2 diabetes or delay onset on type 2 diabetes. GHS will aid in the conduction of formal user-centered design research activities of the new MHCE prediabetes technology to ensure the new design/product meets the needs and challenges of individuals living with prediabetes. Dr. Ron Pirrallo NASA via Clemson University Enhancing the Meaningfulness of Work for Astronauts through Targeted Experiment Involvement and Feedback GHS will facilitate interviews with 20 emergency medicine physicians regarding the role of patient feedback in enhancing the meaningfulness of their work, participate in the construction of the interview schedule, and help analyze interview responses. Project Dates: 10/01/2018 - 09/30/2019 Total: $16,350; Direct Cost: $10,454; Indirect Cost: $5,896 Dr. Stephanie Bailey NASA via Clemson University Validating Physiological and Neurological Measures of Teamwork The goal of this project is to produce guidelines on prospective neurological and physiological metrics for functional and dysfunctional aspects of teamwork, namely affective, attitudinal, and motivational aspects that can be captured with physiological indicators. Dr. John O’Connell Department of Defense Sequencing of targeted kinetic nanotherapies with decoupling of deiodinase regulated thyroid hormone signaling to extinguish breast cancer metastases The objectives of this study are to determine if the following are possible and to what extent: 1) radiation and electricity can be delivered to cultures of breast cancer cells in a sequenced fashion that completely extinguishes the breast cancer cells; 2) depriving cancer cells of access to an increased supply of energy at the time of severe damage caused by electricity, radiation or their combination can lead to fewer surviving cancer cells with minimal harm to normal tissues. Dr. Jonathan Markowitz National Institutes of Health (NIH) via University of North Carolina Tooth matrix biomarkers to identify early life environmental risk factors for eosinophilic esophagitis This study aims to collect and analyze teeth from children with EoE and controls. GHS will be responsible for identifying subjects and healthy controls appropriate for inclusion in the study and ensuring that study procedures are followed for the collection of study material. Dr. Kevin Kopera South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund Prospective Study Registry of Individuals in South Carolina with Spinal Cord Injuries The purpose of this project is to continue development of and enrollment in a prospective Registry Database of patients with SCI. Demographic and Injury Related Common Data Elements are being collected from spinal cord injury (SCI) patients and their clinicians from Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital. Project Dates: 06/01/2018 - 05/31/2021 Total/Direct Cost: $750,000; Cost Share: $489,093 Candice Hipp The Duke Endowment Accountable Communities / Health Extension Project** GHS and Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service seek to continue and expand the Health Extension program in Greenville County while applying lessons learned from the initial pilot. Health Extension will target efforts and evaluation on Hypertension self-management and continue to serve the underserved populations with Hypertension education and resources. Jane Witowski Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Applying Technological Innovations to Support Family Engagement in Developmental Promotion, Early Detection, and Referral and Linkage to Community Resources GHS, through its Help Me Grow Program, will participate in this pilot project to implement the Well Visit Planner within the care coordination process and share experience, strategies, and successes with peers to evaluate the use of this tool intended to improve well-child care by collecting information and concerns from parents prior to pediatric care visits.
