FUN THINGS TO DO ON A BUDGET!

1. Take the 15­minute Jamestown Ferry across the James River for a great view of the shoreline. It runs 24 hours a day from Glass House Point.

2. Check out the Farmer’s Market in Merchant Square on Saturdays to experience the fascinating bustling small­town ambience.

3. Colonial Williamsburg is free for students. Check it out sometime – whether or not your last tour here was with a 3rd!"#$%&!'&(%!)#*+,!-./!0*((!'1%!2.3&)4*1"!interesting now.

4. Second Sundays Festival of Art and Music provides free visual and performing artists every second Sun­day of the month on Prince George Street.

6. Aromas often has free jazz nights – look out for those to enjoy good food and great music.

The William and Mary Rowing Club began this fall season by dedicating its newly built Tack Family Boathouse. Alums and current rowers alike were present for this special day in the history of the WMRC. “This is a huge accomplishment for

the team. Although WMRC has existed 8.#! )4&! +$2)! ?@! -&$#2,! 0&! 1.0! 8*1$((-!4$A&! $! +&#3$1&1),! +4-2*7$(! 4.3&! *1! )4&!7.33/1*)-,B! 2$*%! )4&!C6DEF2!G#&2*%&1)!Lindsay Oakley (’12). The event was catered by Paul’s Deli and

featured alums from as far back as the club’s founding in 1985 as well as recent graduates. 54&#&!0$2! $! #$8H&! $1%! 2*(&1)! $/7)*.1! )4$)!featured the naming rights of the men’s varsity Pocock 8+ racing shell as well as the naming rights to the three boat bays. The ceremony itself took place after a

regatta on the Chickahominy River attended by the rowing clubs of James Madison I1*A&#2*)-,! I1*A&#2*)-! .8! D*743.1%,!Old Dominion University and Liberty University. Amid all the revelry there was a distinct feeling of accomplishment amongst )4&!$))&1%&&2,!$2!)4&!2)#/""(&!).!"&)!).!)4*2!moment was well known. Boathouse construction began in early

In previous years the WMRC has used the ;.$)!#$7>2!'8)-!-$#%2!8#.3!)4&!%.7>!8#.3!which the rowers launch every morning. The racks were less than desirable due to the fact that the boats were open to the &(&3&1)2Q!!!P.0,!0*)4!)4&!1&0!;.$)4./2&,!the shells are safely tucked away in a structure that can withstand the harsh weather of James City County. S&8.#&,! #.0&#2! %&$()! 0*)4! +#.;(&32!

grand appointments of the shell houses of ;.$)4./2&!#.0!*1!G4*($%&(+4*$,!G9!$1%!)4&!;.$)4./2&2!.8!N$#A$#%!$1%!6<5,!)4&!5$7>!Family Boathouse is a tremendous step in a growing program that shows it is willing and able to compete with established club and varsity programs from around the world. Last season’s stellar showings at

the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing 922.7*$)*.1F2!#&"$))$!*1!L$>#*%"&,!5P!(&8)!WMRC with a silver medal in the grand '1$(2Q! ! <1! $%%*)*.1,!C6DE! 2&)! $! 7./#2&!record in the Occoquan Chase head race in )4&!8$((!.8!?JVJQ!!54*2!2&$2.1,!;.)4!)4&!3&1F2!and women’s teams have received bids to row at the Head of The Charles regatta in S.2).1,! )4&! it without any of these people and are so A&#-!"#$)&8/(!8.#!)4&*#!7.1)#*;/)*.12,B!2$*%!Lindsay Oakley (’12). The boathouse was funded by the

donations of patrons and alumni as well as )4&!#.0&#2!)4&32&(A&2,!04.!0.#>&%!%$-!*1!and day out to raise money for their new construction. Each member participated *1! $! +#."#$3! 7$((&%! Y0.#>!0&&>&1%2,B!which had rowers complete household chores and yard­work for members of )4&!7.33/1*)-,!*1!.#%&#!).!4&(+!8/1%!)4&!construction of the boat house. “The boathouse will allow the team to

better maintain and preserve its current equipment and also provides room for "#.0)4!$1%!&:+$12*.1,!$((.0*1"!C6DE!to share the sport of rowing with more students on campus and the Williamsburg 7.33/1*)-!$)!($#"&,B!L$>(&-!2$*%Q!!The sentiment toward the boathouse

Current freshmen and sophomores cannot remember a time when there wasn’t some restoration occurring in any given corner of the campus. This change has left many students to wonder why these +#.M&7)2! $#&! .77/##*1"! *1! 2/74! 8#&Z/&17-,!and why their school is channeling so much money into these endeavors. Y92! ).!04-!0&!$#&!%.*1"! )4*2!1.0,!0&!

have massive infrastructure on campus that needs to be maintained so that it is 2$8&,! &8'7*&1)! $1%! 8/17)*.1$(,B! 2$*%! ^$1&)!S#$24&$#,!S.$#%!.8!_*2*).#2!6&3;&#Q!Y5/7>&#!is not usable right now. Roughly half the dorms cannot be air conditioned because )4&!/)*(*)-!*18#$2)#/7)/#&!*2!2.!%&'7*&1)Q!91%!other old buildings and dorms are also in states of disrepair. If we did not spend 2.3&)4*1"!1.0,!*)!0./(%!7.2)!3/74!3.#&!($)&#QB!<1! ?JVV,! )4#&&! +#.M&7)2! 4$A&! 3$%&! *)!

currently underway is the Historic E$3+/2! I)*(*)-! G#.M&7),! 04*74! (..>2! ).!update the utility instillations of several academic buildings and dormitories to modern standards. The goals of this $22.3 million dollar project include the installation of new lines to 11 out of the 27 buildings on Historic Campus and south of Jamestown Road as well as the installation of three new water line 2&"3&1)2! ).! *3+#.A&! '#&! 2/++#&22*.1!water pressure. This massive undertaking is divided

*1).!3$1-!+$#)2,!0*)4!1&0!2/;`+#.M&7)2!).!be completed and started throughout the semester until at least winter break. The

College website provides monthly updates on the status of each of these sub­projects. One project which has recently found

1&0!(*8&!*2!)4&!#&2).#$)*.1!.8!5/7>&#!N$((,!the old English Department building that was closed after Commencement 2009 once it was deemed unsafe for students and faculty members. The project hit a snag in the following semesters after a lack of funds prevented the $12.1 million undertaking from going forward. <1! 6$-! .8! ?JVV,! 2.3&! ($2)`3*1/)&!

funding of $11 million was allocated in )4&! E.33.10&$()4! .8! _*#"*1*$F2! 7$+*)$(!budget. The Tucker Project was part of several construction projects occurring *1! _*#"*1*$! 7.((&"&2! )4$)! #&7&*A&%! 2/74!funding in the state’s most recent budget.YE/##&1)(-,! 0&! $#&! 7.3+(&)*1"! )4&!

consumer protection advocacy and still wishes to combat companies engaging in unethical behavior. To a majority of non­Government majors

future student body composition. Cur­rently 35% of students at the College are out­of­state. Chohany would presumably seek to decrease that percentage. Of course there exist issues beyond

education and the College’s future. Follett .88&#2!)4&!&:$3+(&!.8!"&##-3$1%&#*1",!)4&!practice of contorting voting districts so that they cover areas where demograph­ics will provide an advantage to one party. This results in intractably Democratic or

Republican seats and absurd district out­lines. “The Senate districts are gerryman­dered against both parties’ interests. If the Republicans win the Senate they can break )4&!7-7(&!.8!*17/3;&17-,B!2$*%!].((&))Q!“If the students of the College value

Preserving the R#&$3!4.(%2! )#&3&1%./2!+.(*)*7$(! 2$(*&17-,!if for no other reason than the fact that the Dream of old no longer seems realistic given the nation’s current condition. The argument from the left mostly follows former president Clinton’s line of logic: corporations brought these woes with their reckless risks and unfair treatment of their middle and working class &3+(.-&&2,!04*(&!1/3&#./2!(..+4.(&2!*1!)4&!tax system favor wealthy individuals. The right makes an argument from the opposite point of view: corporations and well­off businessmen offer a vital incentive for people ).!2)#*A&!8.#!2/77&22,!$1%!)4$)!*17&1)*A&!8.#32!the backbone of the American Dream. Overregulation and a heavy tax burden 4/#)2!&1)&#+#*2*1"!;/2*1&223&1,!04*74!.1(-!discourages the American people to takes risks in the business world. Both sides make 7.3+&((*1"!$#"/3&1)2,!$1%!#&"$#%(&22!.8!)4&!*33&12&!;*$2,!&$74!$#"/3&1)!8&$)/#&2!$!8$*#!amount of truth. My purpose here is not to give a verdict on the role of the private sector in the waning .8! )4&!93&#*7$1!R#&$3Q!<12)&$%,! <!0$1)! ).!focus on the role of the American people

in the waning of the American Dream. The 1990s saw the true beginning of the Internet 9"&,!04&#&!)&741.(."-!)-7..12!8#.3!\*(*7.1!_$((&-!*1A&1)&%!+&#4$+2!)4&!3.2)!*3+#&22*A&!+*&7&2!.8!3$74*1&#-,!.1!27$(&!0*)4!)4&!04&&(!and the printing press. Technology began to #$+*%(-!"#.0,!$1%!*1%*A*%/$(!+#.%/7)2!;&"$1!).! Z/*7>(-! .;2.(&27&Q! P.! 3$))&#,! )4./"4,!because consumers gladly purchased the ($)&2)!A&#2*.12!.8!7&((!+4.1&2,!7.3+/)&#2!$1%!music players. One consequence of this technology craze was increasing purchases made on credit. A study from the St. Louis Federal Reserve shows that outstanding consumer credit debt has increased exponentially from the 1970s to 2008. The national consumer debt in 2008 0$2! cVW! )#*((*.1,! $2! .++.2&%! ).! *1H$)*.1`adjusted $4 trillion in 1984. People are ;.##.0*1"!3.#&!3.1&-!0*)4!7#&%*),!04*74!has led to skyrocketing household debt. We the people essentially added consumerism to the American Dream in our eternal quest to Y>&&+!/+!0*)4!)4&!^.1&2&2QB That is not to say that consuming goods is inherently bad. Consumption drives our &7.1.3-,! $1%! 0&! 1&&%! 7&#)$*1! *)&32! M/2)!).! 2)$-! $H.$)! *1! 2.7*&)-Q! ].#! &:$3+(&,! )4&!College requires us to have a personal laptop because of the level of connection around which we have come to build our education $1%!;/2*1&22Q!N.0&A&#,!$)!$!7&#)$*1!+.*1),!0&!began to consume beyond our means. Not surprisingly (to some tea­drinkers) almost 57% of those surveyed said )4$)! )4&-! %.! 1.)l! 4.0&A&#,! /+.1! 8/#)4&#!questioning about whether or not they use 2+&7*'7!+#."#$32,!iWs!.8!)4$)!@js!$%3*))&%!they did use government programs. Well )4$)! 3&$12! )4$)! .8! )4&! V,WJJ! 2/#A&-&%,!only 48 people—or about 3%—do not use government programs. Interesting. How is it that only 3% of our population does not use 8./#!.#!3.#&!".A&#13&1)!+#."#$32,!;/)!@js!believe that they don’t use any? Whether -./!(*>&!*)!.#!1.),!)4&!".A&#13&1)!4$2!$!A&#-!active role in everyone’s lives. As Elizabeth C$##&1,!$!7$1%*%$)&!8.#!)4&!I\!\&1$)&!2&$)!

This begs the question: why do the majority of people think that they don’t use the government and thus don’t really need it? Maybe people don’t count programs like the Home Mortgage Interest Deduction or the Child and Dependent E$#&!5$:!E#&%*),!04*74!4&(+!8$3*(*&2!$88.#%!4.3&2!$1%!74*(%#&1Q!N.0&A&#,!<!)4*1>!)4&2&!+#."#$32!$#&!vital for supporting everyone’s conception of the American Dream. We all think people should have children and own a home. The government helps this by effectively subsidizing home ownership and parenting. It is only with these tax breaks )4$)! *1! ?JJi,! 2.3&! V,WjJ! 4./2&4.(%2! #&+.#)&%!$1!*17.3&!.8!.A&#!cV!3*((*.1,!04*(&!+$-*1"!b&#.!8&%&#$(! *17.3&! )$:Q!C4*(&! )4*2! *2! $1! &:)#&3&,!it shows how much help the government is willing to give in order to support its people. The )4*1"!*2,!1.!.1&!)4$1>2!)4&!".A&#13&1)!8.#!)4&2&!programs; no one is willing to acknowledge the government for many of the things it does. In )4*2!7$2&,!)$:!&:+&1%*)/#&2!$#&!.8)&1!.A&#(..>&%!as something every person deserves without question. Why should we deserve this tax cut? <1!E4*1$,!-./!4$A&!).!+$-!).!4$A&!3.#&!)4$1!.1&!74*(%,!;/)!*1!93&#*7$!-./!"&)!$!)$:!7/)Q One journalist compared my generation to my grandparents. In my grandparents’ "&1&#$)*.1,! )4&! 3&1! 7$3&! ;$7>! 8#.3!World War II with the GI Bill that funded )4&*#! &%/7$)*.1,! 04*74! (*>&(-! ($1%&%! )4&3!a good job. They had a concrete example of the government affecting their lives for "..%Q! <1! 3-! "&1&#$)*.1,! +&.+(&! %.1F)! 2&&!the welfare and food stamp programs that keep people alive and help people get back on their own two feet. No one sees tax expenditures as the government doing good by its citizens; tax cuts are a right for us and not some government initiative. Unemployment insurance? Of course the government must do that. Food and Drug Administration? Of course the food at Bloom will be inspected and safe for consumption. Families earning below the poverty line? Of

course the government will ensure that there is adequate low­income housing. In each of )4.2&!7$2&2,! )4&!".A&#13&1)!4$2! 8$*#(-!0&((!.#"$1*b&%! 2.(/)*.12,! ;/)! *1! 3$1-! .8! )4.2&!cases a business would have no incentive. 54&#&! *2! 1.! +#.')! ).! ;&! 3$%&! 8#.3! (.0`income housing. Especially in urban areas 04&#&!#&$(!&2)$)&!7$1!;&!A&#-!A$(/$;(&,!;/)!)4&!%&3$1%! 8.#! (.0`0$"&!0.#>&#2! *2!4*"4,!low­income housing is desperately needed. Government is the only option. Our problem is that we don’t acknowledge the need for and reliance on government.! ! <8!0&,! .#! #$)4&#! )4&!fLG! 7$1%*%$)&2! $1%!S$#$7>!L;$3$,!$#&!".*1"!).!%*27/22!)4&!#.(&!of domestic government then the public 1&&%2! ).! >1.0!04$)! Just take a look at what happened in Texas: Rick Perry cut the Fire Department budget by 75% and then was forced to request Federal Emergency Management 9"&17-! U]a69X! $*%! ;&7$/2&! )4&! '#&!department couldn’t handle the raging 0*(%'#&2Q! 54&! Steele was a highly polished and well­educated candidate with impeccable 7#&%&1)*$(2,! $1%! $)! )4&! )*3&! 2&&3&%! (*>&! $!logical answer to Obama. Over the next 8&0!3.1)42,!4.0&A&#,!4&!+#.A&%! )*3&!$1%!again what a fatal mistake it was to put him

in such a highly public position. Whereas President Obama is one of the best orators .8! ./#! $"&,! $1%! 4$2! -&)! ).! 3-! >1.0(&%"&!to utter anything on the level of even the 3&$1&2)!YS/24*23,B!%/#*1"!4*2!)&1/#&!\)&&(&!ceaselessly spouted myriad gaffes that could 3$>&!&A&1! ^.&!S*%&1!0*17&Q!93.1"!)4&3,!was the notable instance in which he posited that he felt most members of his own party feared him due to his race. Along with the highly embarrassing instance of essentially calling the Republican Party racist went dozens of other such follies. And so it should have come as a shock to none that when they had the chance to boot Steele out .8!4*2!.8'7&!$8)&#!)0.!4.##*;(&!-&$#2,!)4&!fLG!.8'7*$(2!%*%!2.!0*)4!$!7.((&7)*A&!2*"4!.8!#&(*&8Q!What’s interesting about Steele’s failure is not )4$)!4&!0$2!#&+($7&%,!;/)!;-!04.3Q! Michael Steele has now been replaced by D&*17&! G#*&;/2,! $1%!04*(&! )4$)!3$-! ;&! $1!*1)#*"/*1"! $1%! /1*Z/&`2./1%*1"! 1$3&,! )4&!3$1!4*32&(8!7./(%!1.)!;&!3.#&!.8!$!;($1%,!3*%`0&2)&#1!04*)&! He seemed like a logical choice in light of the growing political power of Latinos in this country; a demographic that the GOP needs to start making some serious headway into soon *8!)4&-!0$1)!).!2)$-!7.3+&)*)*A&Q!g&)!)4&!"(.0!around Rubio has waned of late.!!<8!-./FA&!0$)74&%!&(&7)*.1!7.A&#$"&!($)&(-,!it’s almost impossible that the name Chris Christie hasn’t caught your attention.
