The U.S. Army Air Forcesprovided 16 B-25 Mitchellmedium bombers. Eachplane held a crew of fivemen. These bombers,which had never been usedin combat before, had therange and the wingspanthat would allow forcarrier takeoff. Lt. Col.Doolittle flew the first B-25 to launch in this raid,
the ships
The U.S. Navy provided twoaircraft carriers: USS Hornet(CV 8), commanded by CaptainMarc A. Mitscher, from whichthe B-25s would launch andUSS Enterprise (CV 6) whichprovided support. Vice Adm.Halsey commanded the taskforce in this plan.
After being spotted byenemy vessels and having tolaunch at approximately 650miles from Japan vice 400miles as originally planned,the B-25s still managed tohit at least five major areas:Tokyo, Yokosuka, Yokohama,Kobe, and Nagoya.
Taking off 250 milessooner than planned hadthe planes nearly empty onfuel as they headed towardthe eastern cost of China.Of the 16 planes, 15 eithercrash-landed or the crewbailed out. Only one planelanded – in the USSR –where the crew was heldas prisoners with liberalprivileges. Seven DoolittleRaiders were killed in themission.

In the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle, U.S. Army Air Forces, and ViceAdm. William F. Halsey, Jr., U.S. Navy, led a joint Army-Navy bombing operation on the Japanese
mainland aimed to inflict both material and psychological damage upon the enemy.
