Bord Gáis exorbitant price hikeAn increase of a fifth in Bord Gáis prices seems excessive and I have no doubt it will be too much for many people to bear. Bord Gáis was seeking an increase of 39% which the energy regulator refused. A public consultation must now be conducted by the regulator before a final decision to hike prices up by 22% at the end of August is made. I am calling for everyone concerned to see sense on this matter. There is currently an estimated 110,000 Bord Gáis customers in arrears. A price hike of this magnitude will undoubtedly push this figure skywards. Much has been made in recent months about the ease with which energy customer can switch providers. I am urging people to use their purchasing power, if they are not happy with the value they are getting, and to examine which energy supplier can meet their needs at the lowest possible cost.

Dumpty DumpDear Editor In a recent issue of the Douglas Post I read a letter from The Douglas Tidy Towns Group. I must say they are to be congratulated on having the right attitude towards our locality and for the wonderful work they are doing. Each and every member is to be admired for their exemplary example of true community spirit, they are surely the envy of every resident in the area and they deserve our full support, cooperation and participation.A few days ago I was taking a shortcut from Frankfield Church, down the glen towards Vernon Mount and across the open field to Douglas when I was stopped by a gentleman who said he was the owner of the land. He asked if I was dumping rubbish. When I assured him I was not that kind of person he went on to explain that an increasing amount of refuse, garden and household was being dumped on his property all along the boundary with Alden and the lower Shamrock Lawn area adjoining Inchvale Lane. He told me he could understand that some of offenders probably had something in their background that allowed them to think that the dumping of refuse along the edge of the road or behind hedge grows was acceptable behavior. But the real fear was that the tolerance of this kind of practice devalued the property in the area and there may even be some unscrupulous developer secretly promoting it with a view to acquiring houses at reduced prices. He went on to say he had taken the matter up with the Council and that the Litter Warden would shortly be carrying out an investigation. He then bid me good day, walked to a jeep parked in Alden and drove off.As I continued my journey I looked around for evidence of what he was talking about and sure enough the man wasn’t telling any lies about the dumping of refuse. As for the Council taking

action I’d say he’s dreaming and as for the Litter Warden I’d say he can forget that too. Then I remembered The Tidy Towns and realized that they have the right attitude. We should all join the Tidy Towns and clean up our own estates and the surrounding areas and not be waiting for someone else to do it because it will never get done. Dogs Abuse

Dear Editor As the nefarious deeds by elements of the Irish religious community are laid bare, can we hope that sometime in the future a similar spotlight will expose the nefarious deeds perpetrated on the non-human members of our society.In a similar vein to those innocent children, domestic, farm and wild animals are subjected to daily and ongoing abuse and death. Many of these acts carry the legal imprint of legislature.

From companion animal abuse, factory farming, live hunting, vivisection, circuses and zoos, live shooting, the many forms of animal abuse is only limited by the perpetrators imagination.This dedicated animal abuse leaves in its slipstream injured and dead voiceless victims. For them, they did not ask or consent to be part of this abuse but have ended up as playthings for the mentally and emotional stunted individuals that populate the animal abuse community.Tears are flowing for the abused human victims who stories in the various abuse reports have exposed their hurt and pain. Can we hope that when a similar report is drawn up on the treatment of the non-human members of our society there will be enough tears left in our emotional reservoir.Will ears echo with the mantra;

‘we knew things were going on but could do nothing or would not do anything to stop it’.Animal abuse is taking place during every one of the 1,440 minutes of the day both in public and private forums. That is the scale of the abuse.It matters little if the abuse is legal or illegalThe result is the same; an injured or dead non-human member of our society reflecting the image of its abuser in its frightened and fear laden eyes.

Hand Me the KeysMy friend Carin was driving home from a few days in the mountains on assignment. It was 1982, and she was excited to see her family again. She came up behind an erratic driver, and wondered if he was falling asleep, suffering a heart attack, or drunk at the wheel. Then she saw him toss a beer bottle.She drove around him to safety, and put distance between the two cars. Then her conscience nagged, "I can't just drive away, I need to get him off the road; someone might be killed!"She slowed to move back behind the drunk, never pausing to think about repercussions. As the drunk approached again and passed, her plan took root. She would pull up beside him, honk and motion for him to pull over.When she did that, however, he just looked confused and decelerated. After two repeats, he was driving at city street speeds, but she was no closer to stopping him. One more time... he slowed, and pulled over onto the shoulder.

Then she watched in horror as he lost control of his car.The ditch was roomy with gentle slopes. A good driver could drive in and out easily. He skidded in -- and stopped. Was he hurt? Carin dashed down to his vehicle. He sat slumped.She rapped on the window, "Are you all right?" He nodded yes and rolled down the window. "Give me your keys. I can't allow you to drive," she demanded. He stared, reached for his keys and handed them over."You could cause an accident," she said, "a death that would haunt you throughout your life.""I've been up all night. I worked late, there was a farewell party... I needed to get home...." he replied, then wilted again. Carin took him to her car, drove his out of the ditch, suddenlyrealizing she had no further plans. What to do?Back up on the highway, inspiration struck. As if on schedule a car appeared on the horizon. With the stranger leaning against her

car to steady himself, she entered the road. She waved her arms, and the car slowed to reveal four male passengers."One of you must drive this man's car to his home, as he's too drunk to drive." The passenger in the front nodded "yes". Everyone else agreed.Carin returned to the drunk, told him of the arrangements, and assured him both he and his car would arrive home safely. He

took her hand, smiled and said, " Thank you for caring. No one has ever done something like this for me. I just...thank you."To this day, almost years later, Carin doesn't remember what she said in response. None of us know what that driver thinks of this incident today. Yet I wouldn't be surprised to learn that, in addition to perhaps saving his life that night, her one act of kindness made a lasting change in his life.

The old man had been determined to treat the grandchildren equally, and in a way he did, but each got a different sum of money. How?

In Greek Mythology a song in honour of Dionysus is called a dithyramb. Dionysus, also commonly known by his Roman name Bacchus, appears to be a god who has two distinct origins. On the one hand, Dionysus was the god of wine, agriculture, and fertility of nature, and was also the patron god of the Greek stage. On the other hand, Dionysus also represents the outstanding features of mystery religions, such as those practiced at Eleusis: ecstasy, personal delivery from the daily world through physical or spiritual intoxication, and initiation into secret rites. In this week’s thought provoking poem, David Jordan of the Ballinlough Writers Group blends mythology and reality while contemplating the effects of over indulgence and a soul searching remedy. Whereas David’s poem is not exactly honouring Dionysus, it does awaken something that is partially lost in all of us, and indicates that we can, in the not too distant future, await with enthusiastic expectation a lot of great poetry from this new undiscovered author.

Out and About with Fergus O’LearyI see that the growth on either side of the path has been cut back. What is most pleasing is that plenty of thick cover has still been left as a habitat for small wildlife, butterflies, moths, bees and birds and small mammals. I can remember when I was young ( I was brought up on the fringes of suburban London ) the hedgerows filled with wild flowers and alive with all sorts of birds and insects. If the verges of the walkway are left to their own devices, that’s what we should be able to have again.Talking of the walkway, it doesn’t really have a name. I mean, it’s sometimes called the line, sometimes the river-walk. But what to call it? How about Bikers Boulevard? For those dealing with the night before, Penitents Path? Or it could be Joggers Joy or Roller Bladers Run? And, of course Dogs Delight. But I thought for the likes of me we could call it Dicky Ticker Trail.Whatever we call it, it’s great to have it and to use it.I don’t know if you saw on the Beeb a programme on meteorology the other night. They showed some of the early weather programmes, which made me grin. Grainy black and white with a forecaster who was a civil servant press-ganged into doing it, looking thoroughly uncomfortab le . What interested me most, however, was the forecasters talking about the average type of weather we have in this part of the world at this time of year. I was a little shocked to hear them describe

July and August as the time of the European monsoon. Which explains a lot, especially as we are the first in line to have half the Atlantic dumped down on us. And why had we not been told before?

Charity ICA Bootcamp takes 16 personalities out of their comfort-zone to face the wrath of the ICA mentors and it’s all for a good cause!

This August 16 well-known personalities will shed their ‘glad rags’, give up their champagne lifestyles and travel to the ICA training headquarters in An Grianán, Termonfeckin to take on the challenge of Charity ICA Bootcamp. Only the toughest and bravest of all these recruits will survive to claim the grand title of Charity ICA Bootcamp Recruit of the Year 2011 with over €100,000 raised for charity in the process.The recruits are male and female, young and not so young with varying levels of domestic ineptitude: The 16 personalities include: Paul Gogarty (former Green Party TD), Peter Clohessy (former Munster and Ireland prop forward), Dr. Eva Orsmond (Operation Transformation), Emma Quinlan (snake charmer), Dickie Rock (legendary entertainer), Kamal Ibrahim (Mr World), Emma Waldron (Ms Ireland), Siobhan O Connor (Broadcaster), Jessica Kuerten (Showjumper), Keavy Lynch (Pop Star -Barbarella), Frankie Gavin (De Danann - trad musician), Derek Burke (Crystal Swing), Mary McEvoy (Actress - Biddy from Glenroe), Dave Young (Entertainer & Comedian), Stephen Carter ( The Carter Twins), Leanne Moore ( singer).All 16 will be based in An Grianán, they will be schooled in the domestic sciences and along the way taught the value of thrift, camaraderie, independence and the glory of brown bread! Gardening - Things to do This WeekThe wonderful thing about gardening is that it is always 'that time of year again'. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Start planting new hardy perennials while the soil is warm. Check lilies such as L. tigrinum for bulbils at the base of leaves, and pot these up under glass. Layer border carnations, cutting the stems where they touch the soil and applying hormone rooting powder.

Kitchen GardenSow cold hardy lettuces in a frame, or outdoors for transplanting to frames. Finish harvesting herbs for drying. Sow a second batch of spring cabbage. Check early

apples and pears for ripeness. Stop outdoor tomatoes one leaf above the third or fourth truss.

Aisling Quinn, who released her album ‘Let the Games Begin’ in May, is performing in Crane Lane Cork on Saturday 6 August with her band The Hallidays. Her new single is called ‘On My Way’. For some people music is a hobby, for others it’s a way of life. For others it’s a series of incomprehensible squiggles on a page of sheet music. For Aisling Quinn it’s about using the inner squiggle.“There is a unique note each person has inside them- like an inner squiggle. The challenge is to capture it and let it out!” Born in Galway, Aisling spent her formative years devouring music, without prejudice to particular styles or genres. Their home was full of instruments and Quinn was tinkering on pianos and strumming guitars for as long as she can remember. Piano was the first instrument Aisling learnt formally but like most teenagers, the discipline to practice escaped her. “I always felt the piano was like a close friend but it’s hard to stay friends with someone when you have to pass an exam on them every year." In 2009, the track ‘When You Come’ achieved a semi final position in the ISC (International Songwriting Competition), a prestigious US based competition that recognises new songwriting talent from across the world. And just recently, it was announced that her track ‘Song I Wrote For You’ also achieved a semi-final position in the ISC 2010. Judges included Tom Waits, Rhianna, Jeff Beck, Robert Smith, Jerry Lee Lewis and a host of industry names. Both tracks feature on the debut album.Lenny Kravitz is set to release his ninth studio album Black and White America on August

19th. Kravitz has already sold over 35 million albums worldwide in his career, but this will be his first release on his new lable Roadrunnder Records. His new single Stand will hit the shelves a week prior to the album, on August 12th. Kravitz wrote, produced and arranged all 16 tracks on the album.

Many US independent record stores have voiced their concern over exclusive release deals for the upcoming Jay-Z and Kanye West album in an open letter addressed to the two stars. The trip to Fort Camden in Crosshaven was very enjoyable, it is a real "Jewel in the Crown" on our doorstep. The fort is surrounded by 45 acres and open to the public since last September. It has been handed over to the Rescue Camden Group, help with the major clean up. The aim of the group is to get Camden Fort to a position where it facilities could be used for the betterment of the community and beyond and restore this beautiful but neglected fortress to her former glory.There are many volunteers involved including firefighters, painters, electricians, etc. They have already renovated two rooms but it will take many years

to renovate it completely it is so big. Our tour guide on our visit was Paul Brierley whose passion, commitment and knowledge was inspirational. I have no doubt Fort Camden is in good hands with the commitment of Paul and his colleagues. I would highly recommend you visit and listen to the stories of times gone by. I was very humbled to receive July "Person of the Month" award and I would like to thank those who nominated me and all the kind words and messages i received during the week . This award is for all our Young at Heart friends and supporters who make Douglas the vibrant and close community it is. We will

aim to continue that our older people have a special place in their community. People in our society are living longer but not always living better for this reason it is often said that we must seek not only to add years to life but to add quality of life to years. History of Douglas TalkCllr. Kieran McCarthy continues his exploration of the heritage and local history of the south east corner of Cork City by shifting his focus on Douglas Village and its environs. This takes the form of a lecture as part of heritage week on Thursday, 25th August 2011 at 11am entitled Perspectives on the History of Douglas at Douglas Library. Commenting Cllr. McCarthy noted that: “The story of Douglas and its environs seems to be in part a story of experimentation, of industry and of people and social improvement; the story of one of Ireland largest sailcloth factories is a worthwhile topic to explore in terms of its aspirations in the eighteenth century; that coupled with the creation of 40 or so seats or mansions and demesnes made it a place where the city’s merchants made their home it and also these suburban spaces make for an interesting place to study in terms of ambition. Those landscapes that were created still linger in the environs of Douglas Village.” The District of Douglas takes its names from the river or rivulet bearing the Gaelic word Dubhghlas or dark stream. As early as the late thirteenth century King John of England made a grant of parcels of land, near the city of Cork to Philip de Prendergast. On 1 June 1726, Douglas Factory was begun to be built. Samuel Perry & Francis Carleton, became the first proprietors. The Douglas Sailcloth Factory is said to have been founded by a colony of weavers from Fermanagh. The 18th century was a golden age for wooden sailing ships, before the 1800s made steam and iron prerequisites for modern navies and trading fleets. The era was also a golden age too for maritime exploration, with the voyages of James Cook amongst others opening up the Pacific and the South Seas. Douglas in its own way added in part to this world of exploration.

BRIDIE’S NIGHTThe biggest charity Céilí & Old Time event in the Carrigaline GAA will be held on Friday 19th August. The annual fundraiser for Marymount Hospice and MS Ireland is organized by Bridie Mulqueen and her friends and over the years has become known as “Bridie’s Night”. CARRIGALINE TWINNING ASSOCIATION25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN CARRIGALINE AND GUIDEL BRITTANYOn Sunday 3rd July last a long procession of Irish and Bretons walked in friendly banter behind Breton pipers to a chosen spot where a fire tree was planted and a plaque unveiled on Rue Carrigaline in Guidel, Brittany. The occasion was the 25th Anniversary of the signing in 1987 of the twinning charter in Guidel between the towns of Guidel and Carrigaline. A staggering 86 people travelled this year to Guidel for the adult

visit which takes place every two years. We look forward to receiving our Breton friends next year with equal hospitality and warmth.

WALKING GROUPThe Carrigaline Active Retired Association has extended their weekly activities to include a walking group. The members interested in taking part are

welcome to join the group in the church car park any Monday morning at 10.30 am or on Monday afternoon at 2.30pm. The walkers have a wide variety of easy routes to travel in and around the town. The CARA knitting club continues to meet and flourish every Tuesday in the Library and is very appreciative of the number of people who presented them with generous supplies of wool. KNITTING CLUBThe Carrigaline knitting club which meets in the library every Tuesday from 2.30 pm to 4.30pm are making a beautiful selection of small blankets to cover the knees of hospital patients. The club wishes to thank the many people who donated wool including one anonymous person who donated a wonderful selection of wool. The club would welcome more wool at any time. New members are always welcome to join the club any Tuesday in the Library from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

G.A.A. FOCUSSnippets from the Local and National SceneBy Pat HarringtonStoriesTwo stories from the Munster hurling final are worth recording here. I was seated next to an elderly gentleman from Mitchlestown. He conveyed to me that he had hoped Tipperary would beat Kilkenny in the all-Ireland final last year. After the Premier County won the game he felt compelled to explain to his father, R.I.P. in the grave, that he would not shout for Tipperary again but he felt the Cats had won enough.On my other side was a father with three young children aged 8, 6 & 4. The father had to take the two eldest to the toilet and a lady seated nearby offered to look after the four year old. This lady gave the boy a bar of chocolate, half of which he quickly consumed. The other half he planned to share with his two brothers. By the time his siblings returned the chocolate was gone to mush in his hand. On seeing the mess one of his brothers innocently asked what happened to his hand? Oh! The joys of youth.This story brings back some happy memories to me. You see my brother and I used to go to a match every Sunday with our dad. Now my brother will skin me for telling this one. There was a rather big crowd at the game and he got lost. He ended up in the commentary box where he had a bird’s eye view. In spite of the public announcements regarding his plight my father didn’t rush to collect him until after the game.

Under 21Cork under 21hurlers had a fine win over Tipperary in the Munster championship in a hugely entertaining game. Both sets of forwards were on top in a contest played out with purpose. The Cork forwards got a plentiful supply of ball evidenced by a final tally of four goals; a very positive result. Aidan Walsh, Conor Lehane, Luke Farrell and Gavin Moylan made huge contributions up front. Yes, Cork have some fine hurlers in the team but let’s keep our feet firmly on the ground. Cork hurling has just had a quick fix. It is certainly a step in the right direction, not a cure for all our ills. Next up is Clare or Limerick.Some interesting information was brought to my attention recently. Cork has eight fulltime coaches – Dublin has fifty plus. Of course Dublin would have a bigger population but surely eight is a small number for Cork. Dublin are reaping the benefits presently in winning minor and under 21 provincial titles in hurling this year, along with minor and senior football titles. Add to that a senior and national league title.

KerryMy Goodness, Kerry lost no time in appointing new selectors for their minor and under 21 football teams. Micky Ned O’Sullivan is in charge of the minors. He captained Kerry in 1975. Kerry won but Micky Ned didn’t last out the game as he was taken out by Alan Larkin of Dublin in a horrific tackle. Micky Ned was also Limerick senior football manager for 5 / 6 years. He did a magnificent job during his reign. Former Kerry full back John O’Keeffe will be assisting.. Former Kerry player and Kerry

selector Eamonn Fitzmaurice is in command of the under 21s. All these ex players come with a very big pedigree and huge experience.
