Skerries 100I travelled with some club mates from the Cork Motorcycle Racing & Vintage Club to Skerries in North County Dublin last Friday for the Skerries 100 motorcycle road races. The weather was how summer weather should be and the racing was just fantastic with no mishaps or major injuries. I met up with many of my friends in the the sport and made many new friends along the way too. Next month WCMC and Timoleague will host the Munster 100 road races and with all the stars from Skerries and more attending, be sure to make the trek west and see for yourself the spectacle of motorcycle road racing at its best. Buy My Dress is a Huge Sucess

Dear Editor, On behalf of Down Syndrome Centre and myself, I would like to say a big thank you to all the Cork ladies who kindly donated dresses to this year’s Buy My Dress charity dress sale, which took place in The Clarion Hotel, Lapp’s Quay, on Saturday 28th May. The event was a phenomenal success, with over 7,500 dresses donated countrywide, nearly 1,000 of which came from Cork ladies, resulting in €95,000 raised countrywide in one day! The Cork event contributed an amazing €7,300 towards this total! Who would have thought so much money could be raised from once loved dresses! I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the businesses, Credit Unions and pharmacies who kindly acted as dress collection points, making it easier for ladies to donate. We would also like to thank all the volunteers and committee members who gave

up their spare time to ensure the event was a success; the businesses who donated their services and premises free of charge to keep costs low; not forgetting all ladies who came through the doors on the day and bought dresses! So many people were so kind and supportive that it’s impossible to thank everyone personally! All monies raised through Buy My Dress goes to support Down Syndrome Centre’s Liaison Nursing Service, which offers advice, support and counselling to parents of newly born children with Down syndrome. As a result of the success of our 2011 campaign and the online dress shop www.buymydressonline.ie Down Syndrome Centre hopes to fund further liaison nurses countrywide. Many thanks again. We look forward to your continued support in 2012.

Best wishes. Sinead O’BrienBuy My Dress Co-ordinator, Cork

EllenI have a friend called Ellen. She was my best friend from the age of five when we were in ‘Babies’ together right up until she got married and moved to Boston in 1988. We went to Eglantine school when the desks still had inkwells; you could lift up the tops and store your books inside and had benches that could sit two pupils. Our desk was up against the wall. Ellen sat on the inside next to the wall and when she got bored, she would raise her right leg and shove me onto the floor. She was half blind and I had a hearing aid; as a pair we functioned quite well. Our teacher often remarked, “The lord made ye but the devil matched ye.”

We were both manic readers. My library of Enid Blyton books was bigger than hers. It was so big that several weeks passed before I realised that Ellen was quietly stealing them from under my nose. One afternoon when we were in Ellen’s house, she proudly showed off her newly extended collection. Impressed, I took down a book and looked through it. My name on the inside cover had been clumsily scrubbed out. I looked at Ellen and said, “But these are my books!” Ellen panicked and snatching the book back said, “No, they’re mine now.” I had to fight her for them. I lived very close to the school and walked home every day for my lunch. On the way, I passed Ballingcurrig Stores, outside of which were several bubble gum and gob stopper machines. I discovered one day, by accident, that one of the machines was faulty i.e. that you could turn the handle and still get a bubble gum without putting in the penny first. I couldn’t believe my luck. I cherished my secret stash and modestly rationed myself to two bubble gums a day. I let Ellen in on the secret. The day I told her, I went home for lunch as usual and passed the bubble gum machine. The glass bubble was half full. I nodded kindly at it and thought ‘See you on the way back, my friend.’ But when I returned the

machine was empty. I assumed I had been rumbled and that the shop keeper had removed the loot. Back at school I sought out Ellen and told her that sadly our supply of bubble gums was no longer. She winked at me and cackled, “No I have them.” She told me that she had ran home at lunch time, got a large shopping bag and cleared the machine all in one go. I was stunned. “Give me some”, I said. “No, she replied, “They’re mine now.” When we were both seventeen, we went up on the train to Dublin for a one day shopping extravaganza. We were like Ivana Trump and Paris Hilton on speed: we managed to get into every single shop on Grafton and O’Connell Street. We didn’t buy anything because we had almost no money but that didn’t slacken our fervour. Ellen warned me at the outset that we weren’t wasting any time stopping for lunch. However, around mid-afternoon; I crumbled and told her that I could not go on unless we ate something. Ellen rolled her eyes and consented to stop for five minutes. We went into a large fast food place on O’Connell Street which thank God no longer exists. We sat down at a table. My legs were killing me. I said, “OK, I’ll go up. What do you want?” Ellen pulling out a tin of tuna and a bread roll from her vast

hand bag said, “A can opener.”In our early twenties, we loved going to night clubs not for the men but to dance. We had no shame, the emptier the dance floor the better. Sometimes we wouldn’t be let in at the door. Ellen would assume her thickest country accent and whine, “But we’re all the way from Fermoy.”

It worked every time.I was chief bridesmaid at her wedding. Ellen’s mother said we were a disgrace in my blood red dress and Ellen, head to toe in dangling pearls and a plunging backless dress. Cork couldn’t contain Ellen: she was outrageous. I miss her.

SECADOver the coming months, South & East Cork Area Development (SECAD) will be using a collaborative process to stimulate a debate about creating a regional brand for the SECAD area. SECAD will be seeking inputs from stakeholders throughout the SECAD area regarding the creation of the brand. The brand will be used to market the area under the following headings: food, tourism, enterprise and recreation. SECAD initiated the process earlier this year when, secondary schools in the SECAD area were

invited to submit designs for a logo which could potentially be used in branding the area. The SECAD area extends from Youghal to Ballincollig and encompasses both rural and urban areas, countryside and the coast. The judges were looking for creativity and versatility and also asked the applicants to explain how they came up with the final design. The successful entry was designed by Alex Nugent who is a student in the Christian Brothers Secondary School in Midleton. The main purpose of the brand will be to create a regional identity for the South and East Cork and the products and services produced and delivered in the area. In order to develop a credible and sustainable brand, SECAD will be involving all sectors in the process and looks forward to hearing proposals from all groups with an interest in developing the brand. If you would like further information, please contact SECAD at 021 4613432.

Last Week’s Teazer Jim White watched in exasperation as the soccer team he had led to world fame over five years was trounced by Brazil. It was just awful! No matter how much he bellowed advice and encouragement nobody took the slightest notice. He almost wept with sheer frustration. At last the whole dismal affair was over and Brazil won by such a huge margin that it went into the record books. Yet, oddly, when the next day’s newspapers came out, Jim, far from being attacked was extravagantly praised.

Why ?

Last Week’s Answer Jim had retired as captain and was watching on T.V. The papers compared the teams current miserable performance with it’s fame under Jim’s captaincy.

This Week’s Teazer A man went to the garage to have an electrical fault on his car repaired.Unfortunately the mechanic was ill and therefore the work could not be done, determined not to waste his trip the man decided to put his car through the car wash. He closed the sun roof, retracted the radio aerial, drove the car into the tunnel and then got out and waited outside for the washing to begin. It was only when he pushed the button that the man began to bellow with rage. Why ?

Described by American writer Steve Winnick as “the spiritual

godfathers” of today’s Irish music groups, The Dubliners were

to the fore of the Irish ballad boom of the Sixties and went on

to became one of the most successful Irish Ballad groups in the

world. Tragedy struck when Luke Kelly collapsed on stage in Cork

with a brain tumor. Luke returned to the stage and struggled to

maintain his profile. Sadly he died four years later. It is hard to

believe twenty seven years have elapsed since that tragic event.

John Sheehan, violin player with the Dubliners, sent us this

poem to commemorate Luke’s 21st anniversary. As this week we

celebrate Luke’s 27 anniversary we though it might be fitting to

re-print it and rekindle a few golden memories.

LUKE Kelly…21st ANNIVERSARY

You’ve come-of-age in death,

Keeper of a golden key;

Forever young, since you

Abandoned time,

While we’ve aged visibly

Weathering the scar.

We linger in your shadow,

A legacy of songs to savour,

While you have risen

To a new consciousness

Where music is imagined, and words

Are scattered among the stars.

WrinklesDefinitionWrinkles are a natural part of aging, but they're most prominent on sun-exposed skin, such as the face, neck, hands and forearms. Although genetics are the most important determinant of skin structure and texture, sun exposure is the major contributor to wrinkles. Environmental exposure, such as to heat, wind and dust, as well as smoking, also may contribute to wrinkling. If your wrinkles bother you, you have more options than ever to help eliminate or at least diminish their appearance. Medications, skin-resurfacing techniques, fillers, injectables and surgery top the list of effective wrinkle treatments.SymptomsWrinkles are the lines and creases that form in your skin. Some wrinkles can become deep crevices or furrows and may be especially noticeable around your eyes, mouth and neck.TreatmentsIf your wrinkles bother you, you have many options to help eliminate or at least reduce

their appearance. Wrinkle treatments include:MedicationsTopical retinoids. Derived from vitamin A, retinoids that you apply to your skin may be able to reduce fine wrinkles, splotchy pigmentation and skin roughness.Nonprescription wrinkle creams. The effectiveness of anti-wrinkle creams depends in part on the active ingredient or ingredients. Retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, kinetin, coenzyme Q10, copper peptides and antioxidants may result in slight to modest improvements in wrinkles.

Surgical procedures and other techniquesA variety of skin-resurfacing techniques, injectables, fillers and surgical procedures are available to smooth out wrinkles. Each works a little differently and has its own set of potential results and side effects. Some studies indicate that a combination of treatments may yield the most satisfying results.PreventionHere are ways to make the most of your skin's appearance:Protect your skin from the sun. Protect your

skin — and prevent future wrinkles — by limiting the time you spend in the sun and always wearing protective clothing and hats. Also, use sunscreen when outdoors, even during winter.Choose products with built-in sunscreen. When selecting skin care products, choose those with a built-in sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Also, be sure to select products that are broad spectrum — meaning they block both UVA and UVB rays.Use moisturizers. Dry skin shrivels plump skin cells, which can lead to premature fine lines and wrinkles. Though moisturizers can't prevent wrinkles, they may temporarily mask tiny lines and creases.Don't smoke. Even if you've smoked for years or smoked heavily, you can still improve your skin tone and texture and prevent future wrinkles by quitting smoking.Eat a healthy diet. There is some evidence that certain vitamins in your diet help protect your skin, particularly vitamins A, C, B-3 and E. More study is needed on the role of nutrition.

For more information on wrinkles contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Ghost housing estates in Cork a worry – ICSAThe Cork branch of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) has expressed its worry at the growth in vacant housing estates in the county. The ICSA is calling for a definitive strategic policy to tackle this issue.According to the preliminary set of figures from the 2011 census released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) it shows that Cork county has one of the highest rate in the country for vacant

dwellings. Approximately 17% of houses in Cork are marked as being vacant with the majority of those dwellings making up “ghost” housing estates.Dermot Kelleher, Macroom farmer and Cork ICSA member, said: “This is indeed very worrying and something needs to be done as a matter of urgency to solve this problem. Galway has one the highest rate of vacant dwellings in the country since the 2006 census and this has been mainly due to greedy developers attempting to make profits on the back of our county. Subsequently we have been left with vacant, sometimes half finished housing estates, which are not only an eyesore on the landscape but are also a financial burden on the State. There is also the whole issue of single built houses that are left idle along the side of a road or are half finished as people cannot obtain a mortgage. This is a significant issue for rural Ireland and for rural Cork.“A number of weeks ago Minister for State Willie Penrose announced a budget of over €1million to help clean up these estates and, in some instances, finish them altogether but this is only a stop gap. There needs to be a definitive plan to tackle the issue. Housing in Cork is affordable presently and it’s a fine county to live in so we shouldn’t have this issue. We are calling on the Government to address this issue and it’s a major issue in the county.”

WOOD CUTTING SERVICE

GArDENING - Things to do This WeekAs usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden- but there might be something. If not this week maybe next week.

FlowersContainers of all kinds will need frequent watering, even daily if the weather is hot and dry. While it increases the work load, warm weather also improves the results from flowers in pots. Most of them need warm weather to perform to their best. Feeding is also essential and can be given every third or fourth watering.

LawnsLawns are generally looking good. Soil moisture levels have fallen but rain has arrived before the effects started to show on the grass. If a lawn is pale or yellowish, it probable could do with feeding: lawns need to be feed at least twice a year, taking the spring feed as the first, most need a second one now. Feeding at this time can be a bit tricky because it will be counter-productive if the weather turns dry.

Trees, shrubs and Roses

Soil moisture has been adequate to keep young trees growing, but check new plants. It is time to clip hedges of all kinds before

the wood gets tough. Any heavy cutting back should be left until the start of the season next year. Roses have suffered plenty of blackspot disease with the warm spells shrivelling the diseased leaves.

Greenhouse and house plant

Take cutting of all kinds, especially roses and clematis now. Spray a grapevine if it shows mildew

to keep the fungus of the tiny grapes. Continue watering and feeding greenhouse Plants. Be especially careful to water plants in pots or grow-bags regularly. These can easily dry out. Train and side shoot tomatoes and cucumbers.

Fruit and Vegetables

There has been quite a lot of potatoe blight and control should be kept up, especially for main crop potatoes. Remove vegetables that have gone over because of the warm weather. There has been good growth of sweet corn, which likes heat. Make some late sowings of lettuce and radishes.

Young @ Heartby Phil Goodman

The annual outing to Sherkn Island was enjoyed by all. The sun shone fish and chips delicious, Dinny Carroll got a sing song going with everybody joining in, more of the same this week on the outing to Kenmare. We have the best country in the world, best of food, best of scenery, best people all we need is a little more sunshine- maybe the promised 'heat wave' will come in August we live in hope.

This weekend is the beginning of Know Your Neighbour Week. Many people don't know their neighbours which really is very sad. People’s lives are so busy that we sometimes forget the affect loneliness can have on people. Loneliness can become almost like a physical pain. We need to ensure our older people are valued they are the ones who made sacrifices for the benefit of the next generation. We need to acknowledge the immense contribution that older people make to Irish society. An 'age friendly’ Ireland is one that enables people as they grow older to maintain and improve their physical, social and mental well being, that offers them opportunities to participate in society. Engaging in the kind of activities that enhance their well being learning new skills, meeting and socialising in their own community. Start this weekend by saying a friendly hello to all your neighbours. Look around you and if you know of someone who needs a smile and a friendly wave, do so!!! Such a small gesture can make such a difference to someone who feels lonely and isolated.

On July the 12th we go to Freemont in Mallow to record two shows for 'Around the Fireside' with Jimmy Reidy. If anyone would like to join us maybe tell a story, sing a song etc, please contact me on 4363867.

On August the 9th we visit the new Marymont Hospice on

Curraheen Road. Here we will be shown around the new facility which is scheduled to open its doors in September to continue on with the wonderful and amazing care that we are all so familiar with.

By Pat Harrington

Dual PlayersThe subject of the dual player has so often been the central theme when the pros and cons of G.A.A. matters are debated. Going beck to the ‘70s there were two household names, Jimmy Barry Murphy and Ray Cummins to name just two. Through the ‘80s and ‘90s the most celebrated of them all was Glanmire man and intercounty stalwart Teddy McCarthy, a dual all-Ireland medal winner in 1990.There are greater demands on players nowadays than there was in the past. They are not just expected to train collectively but also to work out in the gym on their own. The intercounty player of the present time would be far more diet conscious and would curtail his social life during the championship season. This player is serving four masters, being involved in intercounty hurling and football, while at the same time playing hurling and football at club level. Of course he is predominantly involved with the intercounty scene. Other activities must play second fiddle. The training for each game would vary. With the season commencing in February the player would be involved on alternative Sundays in hurling and football as per agreement between both management teams. Then come the championships and with a county such as Cork there are more championship games at senior level due to the high standard of Cork teams. The back door system has greatly increased the pressure on players and the whole situation is very taxing

both physically and mentally.Currently the most celebrated dual player in Cork is Douglas man Eoin Cadogan, a very determined and committed young man. He is most approachable and very accommodating in relation to presentation of medals or in offering advice to young players. Eoin has often been quoted in print as to the accommodating manner of both Conor Counihan and Denis Walsh. But one has to question the decision of the hurling manager to play him in both games against Laois and Offaly within a seven day period while knowing that he had a club championship game sandwiched in between. There is no indication of player welfare to be seen here. There are those who feel Eoin should play hurling and football at intercounty level. Equally there are those who hold the direct opposite view.In expressing an opinion I do not claim to represent in any way the viewpoint of my club Douglas. I believe there is too much pressure on the player to perform at the highest level. A surfeit of games will eventually impact on the player’s performance. That said, no doubt there is great credit due to a player who represents his county in both hurling and football.

Cork HurlingThe Cork team is progressing as one would expect through the qualifiers. Sadly the Laois encounter was a farce. A number of Laois players would not commit to the cause. I expect so many heavy defeats quashed their appetite for intercounty hurling. Or could it be

G.A.A. FOCUSSnippets from the Local and National Scene

a lack of pride? Cork could only beat what was put in front of them. Yes, the Leesiders scored ten goals; an impressive feat at any time but one has to factor in the poor quality of the opposition.Truthfully I thought Cork would defeat Offaly by 7 or 8 points. On the day they were lucky. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise that the Rebels were not at their best. Their challenge now is to refocus as the opposition will be improving as the competition moves on.

Dublin vs. KildareThe all-Ireland championship had its fair share of controversy, none more so than the Dublin vs. Kildare Leinster championship encounter. Eoghan O’Gara was booked for a foul on a Kildare player. Later he got booked again and was consequently sent off. In my book he should have got a straight red for the second offence. What I found mystifying was an incident where a Dublin player pushed a Kildare man over the line using two hands and the referee who was just fifteen yards away awarded a line ball to Dublin. The incident that caused most controversy was a free awarded to Dublin in the 71st. minute which to say the least was questionable. As it turned out it produced the winning point for the Dubs. Probably the most controversial of all is when a player in possession is pulled and tugged all over the place and the referee awards a free against him for over-carrying, and though it is often a difficult one to judge there is little or no consistency in the call.

More next week,Pat.

This Friday night J90 take to the stage at the East Village, Saturday and Sunday will play host to resident djs Alan O’ Dwyer and Pat Ahern.Good news for all those heading to Indiependence on the August Bank Holiday Weekend. The festival has been granted a late bar licence by Fermoy District Court, meaning the alcohol will be served at the bars until 1am. Shane Dune, festival organiser, had this to say, "Naturally we're delighted to have been granted the licence. This gives the adults who attend the festival the opportunity to buy a drink on site as they would normally in any pub".Tickets are still available for the three day festival. However, its Oxegen this weekend and Jessie J has been forced to pull out of a series of her summer shows - including Oxegen - because of a broken foot sustained when she fell off a stage last month. The London-based singer had performed recently while wearing an orthopaedic boot, including a performance last weekend at Glastonbury, but was forced to spend the entire set sitting.Jessie J said in a statement: "Sorry doesn’t feel enough to say, I am devastated for my fans that I know have been waiting see me and working hard for tickets. I was so excited about the summer and I'm as upset as you all are. But unfortunately these things happen."Along with Oxegen, Jessie has had to cancel 10 other shows including Paris: Orange Rock Corps, T In The Park and the iTunes Festival.Jarvis Cocker told the crowd at Wireless

Festival in Hyde Park that they were witnessing a "homecoming" gig from Pulp. The pouting, posing Brit pop star had thousands dancing and singing along as he strutted the staging performing the band's hits, in a dazzling show that saw the crowd covered with streamers and confetti.Jarvis told the crowd: "Although Pulp are predominantly from Sheffield this is like a homecoming gig for us as most of the songs you will hear tonight were written as a result of moving to London." The Different Class stars had everyone joining in from the start with Do You Remember The First Time, and played an energetic set including classics Disco 2000, Something's Changed, Mis-Shapes and Underwear.Jarvis dedicated the song Babies to his mother and his son, who he said were both in the audience. The 47-year-old musician impressed with his moves throughout the show, at one point lying on his back and cycling with his legs in the air.Jarvis introduced the final song, Common People, saying it expressed the mixture of cultures he had first experienced when moving from Sheffield to London.Kelly Osbourne and Pixie Geldof were among the celebrities in the crowd.Earlier Swedish rockers The Hives played an equally lively set dressed in top hat and tails.During their final song, Tick Tick Boom, frontman Howlin' Pelle Almqvist told the audience he was trying a "psychological experiment" by asking everyone to sit down on the floor,

before ordering them all to stand up and dance.Taylor Swift has had to postpone a show for the first time in her career. The country star had to postpone her sold-out show on July 2 at the Yum Centre in Louisville under doctor's orders because of an illness. She tweeted the bad news to fans: "This BOOK ONLINE CORKCINEMAS.COM & COLLECT AT TICKET POINT. is my first time having to do this. I'm so, so sorry."Within 20 minutes hundreds of followers had responded with get-well wishes, which were already among the most popular international trends on Twitter for the day.Taylor postponed the show until October 11. She's due for a short break, before returning to the road on July 8 in support of her multi-platinum album Speak Now.The U2 "claw" which has been the centrepiece of the band's two year-long 360 Tour looks like it'll have a life when the tour finally reaches its conclusion. The band, who had three of the

massive 29,000 square foot steel structures manufactured, are in talks with promoters across the globe about installing them at various spots across the globe.U2 tour manage Craig Evans told Billboard that "it's certainly our intention to see these things recycled into permanent and useable ventures", suggesting that they could be manipulated into permanent stages and amphitheatres. The "claw" is the largest stage rig ever constructed for a concert tour and has a sound system built into each leg, as well as a cylindrical video screen, various effects and

hovers above the performance area.In other U2 news, the band are to re-release Achtung Baby to celebrate its 20th birthday.

LAZILY branded as “The Hang-over for Women” by some outlets, this genuinely hilarious flick is a new benchmark in female-led comedy, which had seemingly peaked with bile like Bride Wars and the odd witty Sex and the City line. Bridesmaids has been a mammoth hit Stateside, and it’s easy to see why.

So why not get yourself and the girls or even drag that man of yours to Bridesmaids, now show-ing at Cinemaworld, Douglas.
