There are all kinds of products on the

market and recommended exercises that

claim to help our minds stay as nimble

and agile as possible.

I know a product that will have a

remarkable impact on your mental

function … and as an added benefit to

your spiritual well being.

Every so often, we can’t recall a name, a fact, a

place or where we left our keys. Just give me a

second, I’ll remember what the next sentence is

… Ah, got it. When this happens, many people

immediately say “A senior moment.” That is a

phrase that somehow is never forgotten. I wish it

were. Did you ever ask a five year old a question

and they answer in a sort of sing song voice “I

forget?” To a twelve year old, “Did you do your

homework?” “I forgot!” To your spouse “Did

you pick up the cleaning?” “I forgot.” No one

says “A senior moment.” I vividly remember

forgetting things in my thirties, forties and fifties.

So what! So let’s stop saying “A senior moment”

ourselves. Or say it in a different context. When

we say something especially wise and insightful,

perspicacious with great sagacity, let’s then say “A

senior moment” because only someone who has

lived more than a few decades and has aged like a

fine wine can be the fount of such fine thoughts.

There are all kinds of products on the market and

recommended exercises that claim to help our

minds stay as nimble and agile as possible. Some

make great sense. Physical exercise is said to have

a cognitive benefit. Learning new topics and

skills, adopting new hobbies, keeping up with your

crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy can all be

helpful and there is much more.

Some play on our concerns and make no sense.

There is a commercial about a product which

assures your mental well being that was originally

discovered in a jelly fish. Why in the world would

I take something for my mind that comes from a

jelly fish? Did you ever meet an intelligent jelly

fish? If you stepped on the same jelly fish twice in

the water would it remember the feel of your

foot? Has a jelly fish ever won a Nobel prize or

made any advancement to the plight of other jelly

fish? Never.

I have a different product I am marketing. I

promise you this works. I promise you that if you

start out and stay with it, it will have a remarkable

impact on your mental function and as an added

benefit, to your spiritual well being. I am

marketing a product called … make sure you’re

sitting down for this … Torah! That’s right,

Torah.

Have you ever read a portion from the Torah? If

you have and you are not blessed with a

photographic memory, you know what a challenge

it is. If you would ever think of taking a short

Torah portion to read, the more reasons you

might have to say it is not for you, the more

beneficial it can be mentally and, of course,

spiritually.

If you say, “I can’t read Hebrew,” there is your new

discipline to learn. It might take a few months but

what’s the rush? If you say that you can read

Hebrew with vowels but how can you read Hebrew

without vowels the way it appears in the Torah,

there is a mental exercise that will exercise your

memory. If you say you are tone deaf, that could be

an impediment but don’t be dissuaded. You won’t

be the first tone deaf Torah reader. Actually,

memorizing what is called the trope, the musical

notes of the Torah reading is a major mental

exercise in itself and you could do it.

We take for granted some of the things that make

our synagogue as special as it is. Visitors are always

impressed by the number of congregants who read

Torah on any given Shabbat morning. Some have

been reading for years and others for some months.

Some read flawlessly and some read with flaws

which I hope are music to G-d’s ears in the holy

effort they are making. As time goes on, the flaws

diminish.

Memory is central to Jewish life. We recently

observed the Sabbath of Remembrance right before

our celebration of Purim. Regarding the Holocaust

we say Zachor-Remember. One of the Ten Great

Declarations is Remember the Sabbath day to keep

it holy. We will soon be sitting around the Seder

table engaged in a familial exercise of remembering

the Exodus from Egyptian slavery. Like physical

exercise can enhance our bone density, strength,

and cardiovascular functioning, our exercise of

remembering the Exodus is to enhance our

compassion for all those yearning for freedom today

at home and in so many parts of the world.

If you are in any way interested in what I am

marketing, Torah and specifically Torah reading,

please be in touch with either the Cantor or me.

Perhaps one of us could work with you individually

or we can pair you with one of our Senior Torah

readers. They will meet you where you are today in

terms of your Hebrew capability and help you reach

the point of taking a short, three verse Torah

part. This may help to prepare you to read at your

child’s or grandchild’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah or at any

given Shabbat morning. It will be spiritually

impactful and enhance your mind and memory while

you’re at it.

If you decide instead to take the pill originally

discovered in jelly fish what can I say? I’ll stick with

Torah!

My best to you for a Zissen Pesah!

Hello Everyone,

Happy beginning of spring.

This is a very busy time of year for the officers and

the board of directors. We are in the middle of

working on the budget for the upcoming year.

This is no easy task as we have so many areas to

review. There are always challenges each year but

we have a great group of people who put in so

much time and effort to make sure that we can

present a balanced budget to the congregation.

I know that I mentioned this last month but it

should be an amazing program. On April 7th we

will be hosting Divas on the Bimah. This is a

phenomenal group of Cantors from the Tri State

areas and our very own Cantor Ocanto-Romo will

be performing with them. Please try and attend.

Sunday May 5th is our Gala to honor two very

special people, Rachel and Carl Goldstein. They

are longtime members of Ohev and have given so

much to making Ohev the place it is today. I hope

that you be able to attend and show your love and

support for this wonderful couple.

Please mark your calendars for May 8th. That is the

date of our annual congregational meeting. We will

be discussing the events of this past year and the

financial status of the synagogue as well as

presenting our Annual Shalom Award. It is an

important time for all of us to get together to be

aware of what is going on at Ohev.

Are enjoying our O-Happenings and Oh-Events?

Are you reading them? Have they been keeping you

informed about all the programs going on at Ohev?

We have been working very hard to streamline how

we send you the upcoming events. They continue

to be a work in progress and your comments are

always most appreciated.

I am looking forward to seeing you at Ohev.

If, as the great scientist and thinker Albert Einstein once said, “It is

every person’s obligation to put back into the world at least the

equivalent of what he or she takes out of it,” then Holly Goldberg,

our April Congregant of the Month, has met (or maybe even

surpassed) those expectations.

Holly grew up in Northeast Philadelphia with loving parents

Dolores and Milton Fleishman, brother Rick, and twin sister Hope.

They were longtime members of Adath Zion Congregation, which

instilled in Holly the importance of being affiliated with a synagogue.

In October of 1995, she and husband David joined Ohev Shalom,

having just relocated to the Philadelphia area from New Jersey and

in search of a Conservative synagogue with a pre-school for their

daughter Anastasia, who was three at the time. Younger daughter

Alexa entered pre-school two years later, and both children

attended Kindergarten Enrichment, pre-Aleph and Hebrew School,

and each celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at Ohev.

Holly’s involvement at Ohev Shalom began right away. She was

active in the pre-school PTO, acted as a substitute assistant

teacher, helped out with the Lunch Bunch, and provided after-

school assistance. Inspired by her mother, a very active member of

Sisterhood at Adath Zion, Holly has been extraordinarily involved

in Sisterhood at Ohev; she has served on the Sisterhood Executive

Board as Co-Vice President of Membership, Religious and Cultural,

Ways & Means, as Financial Secretary, on the General Board as

Fashion Show Co-Chair, and as the ongoing Chair for Sisterhood

mailings. Holly has been an active force behind retention and

recruitment of members, Paid-up Membership dinners, Rosh

Chodesh events, Rabbi’s Book Review, Sisterhood Shabbat,

Sisterhood Bingo, the biennial Fashion Show, and Shalach Manot.

As if that weren’t enough, many other synagogue activities including

Bingo, Comedy Night, Rummage Sale, Auction, aerobics and Mah

Jong lessons have been supported by Holly’s presence.

We are known as People of the Book. Holly considers herself

fortunate and most grateful to Rabbi Perlstein and Cantor Annelise

for the opportunity to have been a part of the Adult Confirmation

Class, Torah Trope Class, The Torah Initiative, Hebrew Part II,

Women of Exodus, and the Adult Hebrew Class with Dr. Ira Sharp.

She reads Torah occasionally, and you can “Count Her In” at

evening minyan throughout the year.

Holly, a graduate of Temple University, had a career in Medical

Technology, and husband David, a Regional Sales Manager for

Florida’s Natural, consider their greatest achievement to be the

successful navigation of the adoptions from Russia of their beloved

daughters. Anastasia, now 26, holds a degree in Communications

from Penn State and is a Technical Recruiter for Goldman Sachs.

Alexa, 23, has a degree in Athletic Coaching Education from West

Virginia University, was a nationally ranked NCAA Division I gymnast,

and is now coaching gymnastics at West Virginia Gymnastics Training

Center.

In her own words, Holly loves the sense of community and friendship

so prevalent at Ohev Shalom. She has always looked forward to the

variety of events offered – religious, social, and educational.

Volunteering enables her to work with inspiring, enthusiastic, and

creative women in Sisterhood and Congregation who are motivated

to ensure the success of Ohev Shalom year after year, as well as to

have fun and to build confidence. She claims it is her small way of

“not showing up to the party empty-handed.” I’m sure we all agree

that her contributions overflow in abundance and generosity, and we

congratulate her on being selected as April’s Congregant of the

Month!

We had a very good season and the boys and girls enjoyed playing as a team. We were 5-1 in the regular season but fell in the

Championship. This year Shir Ami had a stronger team and played better. We played hard and did the best we could and that’s all we can

ask. Three out 4 years winning the championships isn’t too bad!

We will greatly miss our graduating eighth graders: Ari Berkowitz, Ethan Cheifetz, Brett Frajerman, Sam Reiter, and Tyler Brooks. The

underclassmen on the team will carry on our winning tradition, including Jessica Pachman, Jordan Levin and Jacob Goldberg.

I’ve really enjoyed coaching the team the past four years but it’s time to pass the torch to the next generation. Brian Levin has been

‘volunteered’ to take over the team. I was ably assisted this year by Eric Frajerman and extend much thanks and kudos for his help.

Ohev Shalom of Bucks County

According to Jewish law and tradition, we neither eat, own or have any benefit from food that is Hametz ~ leavened ~ during the eight days of Pesah. During these days we are to eat only foods that are Kosher for Passover. Our Social Action Committee is sponsoring a Hametz drive. You are invited to bring unopened Hametz food to Ohev Shalom Jerry and Zelda Gottesman Grand Hall on Thursday, March 28 through Friday, April 12 and it will be given to feed the needy.

For Hametz that we may want to use after Pesah, according to the laws of Pesah, we are to take it out of the kitchen to a place in the home where we will not enter during the days of Pesah. Since we are not permitted to own the food, there is a custom of "selling" the food that remains in our home to a non-Jew. Technically, the non-Jewish individual owns the food for the eight days of Pesah. At the end of Pesah, it reverts back to you, as the owner.

You may appoint Ohev Shalom as your agent to sell the food to a non-Jewish individual. In appointing Ohev Shalom as your agent in this transaction, it is traditional to also offer a gift of Tzedakah. This is probably one of the few, if not the only business transactions where you "pay to sell" something. Your gift of Tzedakah will be used for a Maot Hittim Fund called The Passover League. The Passover League helps to buy Matzah and other Passover items for needy Jews.

The following form may be used in this regard: Please mail your donation payable to The Passover League and completed form to: Ohev Shalom, 944 Second Street Pike, Richboro, PA 18954, Attn: Hametz Sale.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For Selling Hametz

I hereby appoint Ohev Shalom to act as my ַשִליח Agent in selling the Hametz that may remain in my home in an area closed off during Pesah to a non-Jewish individual for the period of the days of Pesah. I understand that this will revert back to me after Pesah.

Enclosed, as an act of Tzedakah and to help fulfill the words of the Haggadah "Let all who are hungry come and eat," please find a donation payable to The Passover League. This donation will be forwarded to The Passover League.

Presidents’ Message

As I drove home from work today, I realized it

was 5:45 pm and it was still quite light out. We

have turned the corner to a new month and our

days will certainly be getting longer. So many

more hours to be part of the many things your

“sisters” of Sisterhood are doing.

Our Winter New Member Dinner was very

successful. Current board members and 9 new

members got to know one another, exchange

ideas, laugh, schmooze and share a meal. Thank

you to all who participated in our annual Shalach

Manot event this year. Finally, the blue birds are

chirping, and Sisterhood is “buzzing” with our

upcoming events:

• Our Annual BINGO April 4th will have the

ladies praying for “B-15”, shouting “BINGO”

and winning raffle baskets!

• On April 28th at 5 pm, please join Sisterhood

as we honor Cantor Annelise at our “Annual

Torah Fund Dinner”. Come show your

support for Cantor Annelise.

• Friday May 10th is our annual “Sisterhood

Shabbat” so mark your calendars for services

and dinner.

• Our Donor Dinner / Sisterhood Closing

Affair always promises to be unique and fun.

Save the date for Tuesday June 11th.

If you find you have time to share, want to make

new friends, re-kindle friendships, then reach out,

we would love to have you be a part of our

Sisterhood!

B’Shalom,

Susan Berk and Ivy Graff, Co-Presidents

With the weather not reminding us that the

ground hog didn't see his shadow on February

2nd, we continue to struggle through March. But

spring will eventually be here. And with the

coming of spring comes Purim.

This year we again will have a fun-filled Purim

Carnival and the Men's club will be hard at work

assembling and giving out the yellow Yom

HaShoah Candles. We will also be joining the

Sisterhood in a salute to Broadway dance routine.

We had an exciting outing to the Temple - Tulane

basketball game and saw the Owls easily defeat

their opponents. It is always a fun outing when we

get together. You should make sure to mark your

April 28th we are going to have a speaker from the

Jewish Museum for a presentation and a fabulous

breakfast at the amazing price of only $15.

In May we will be having our second annual Sushi

and Saki night. Last year we had a great turnout

and. Lot of fun. Keep your eyes out for the date

and signup.

It's hard to believe that we are in the midst of

planning our closing dinner. This year has flown

by. We should have a fabulous speaker lined up and

as usual a great meal. It is a great time to enjoy the

commadarie with your fellow members. So look for

the announcement and sign up.
