THE FOUR WAY TEST: A historyFrom the Archives of Rotary Global History Fellowship

In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test. The test, which has been translated into morthan 100 languages, asks the following questions:

Of the things we think, say or do

    Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTERFRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned

     A Story Behind

THE FOUR WAY TESTBy Darrel Thompson

More than 60 years ago, in the midst of the GreatDepression, a U.S. Rotarian devised a simple, four-part ethical guideline that helped him rescue a belea-guered business. The statement and the principles itembodied also helped many others find their ownethical compass. Soon embraced and popularized byRotary International, The Four-Way Test today standsas one of the organization's hallmarks.

Herbert J. Taylor, author of the Test, was a mover, adoer, a consummate salesman and a leader of men.He was a man of action, faith and high moral principle.

Born in Michigan, USA, in 1893, he worked his waythrough Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

After graduation, Herb went to France on a mission forthe YMCA and the British Army welfare service andserved in the U.S. Navy Supply Corps in World War I.n 1919, he married Gloria Forbrich, and the couple setup housekeeping in Oklahoma, USA, where he workedfor the Sinclair Oil Company. After a year, he resignedand went into insurance, real estate and oil lease bro-kerage.

With some prosperous years behind him, Herb re-turned to Chicago, Illinois, in 1925 and began a swiftrise within the Jewel Tea Company. He soon joined theRotary Club of Chicago. In line for the presidency of

Jewel in 1932, Herb was asked to help revive the near-bankrupt Club Aluminum Company of Chicago. Thecookware manufacturing company owed $400,000more than its total assets and was barely stayingafloat. Herb responded to the challenge and decided tocast his lot with this troubled firm. He resigned fromJewel Tea, taking an 80 percent pay cut to becomepresident of Club Aluminum. He even invested $6,100of his own money in the company to give it some oper-ating capital.

Looking for a way to resuscitate the company andcaught in the Depression's doldrums, Herb, deeplyreligious, prayed for inspiration to craft a short measur-ng stick of ethics for the staff to use.

As he thought about an ethical guideline for the com-

pany, he first wrote a statement of about 100 words butdecided that it was too long. He continued to work, reducing it to seven points. In fact, The Four-Way Testwas once a Seven-Way Test. It was still too long, andhe finally reduced it to the four searching questionsthat comprise the Test today.

Next, he checked the statement with his four depart-ment heads: a Roman Catholic, a Christian Scientist,an Orthodox Jew and a Presbyterian. They all agreedthat the Test's principles not only coincided with theirreligious beliefs, but also provided an exemplary guidefor personal and business life.

And so, "The Four-Way Test of the things wethink, say or do" was born:

Is it the TRUTH?Is it FAIR to all Concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTERFRIENDSHIPS?Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Profound in its simplicity, the Test became the basisfor decisions large and small at Club Aluminum.

At Club Aluminum in the 1930s, everything was meas-ured against The Four-Way Test. First, the staff ap-plied it to advertising. Words like "better," "best,""greatest" or "finest" were dropped from ads and re-

placed by factual descriptions of the product. Negativecomments about competitors were removed fromadvertising and company literature.

One day, the sales manager announced a possibleorder for 50,000 utensils. Sales were low and the com-pany was still struggling at the bankruptcy level. Thesenior managers certainly needed and wanted thatsale, but there was a hitch. The sales manager learnedthat the potential customer intended to sell the prod-ucts at cut-rate prices. "That wouldn't be fair to ourregular dealers who have been advertising and pro-moting our product consistently," he said. In one of thetoughest decisions the company made that year, theorder was turned down.

By 1937, Club Aluminum's indebtedness was paid

and during the next 15 years, the firm distributed mthan $1 million in dividends to its stockholders. Its nworth climbed to more than $2 million.

In 1942, Richard Vernor of Chicago, then a directoRotary International, suggested that Rotary adopt tTest. The R.I. Board approved his proposal in Jan1943 and made The Four-Way Test a component the Vocational Service program, although today it considered a vital element in all four Avenues of Sevice.

Herb Taylor transferred the copyright to Rotary Intetional when he served as R.I. president in 1954-55during the organization's golden anniversary.

The Four-Way Test is international, transcending ntional boundaries and language barriers. It knows politics, dogma or creed. More than a code of ethichas all the ingredients for a successful life in everyway. It can and will work in today's society.

Few things are needed more in our society than mintegrity. The Four-Way Test will guide those who to use it for worthy objectives: choosing, winning, akeeping friends; getting along well with others; ensing a happy home life; developing high ethical andmoral standards; becoming successful in a chosenbusiness or profession; and becoming a better citizand better example for the next generation.—————————————————
