Regan McEvoy stated that, “You’re a

human and humans make mistakes.”

She is saying that making mistakes is

normal, and that there’s nothing to be

ashamed about. Adi Steele encourages,

“Run faster, leave your worries on the

that if you try hard enough and do the

best you can, you can be successful. So

there’s no need to worry about what’s

to come or what people are going to

think about you. Austin Glover says,

“You’ll be fine. Just try your best. You

can do it!” He wants you to know that

you’ll be fine and everything will turn

out the way it’s supposed to. Even

though Mr. Whipple isn’t an ambassa-

dor, he wishes to say a few things, such

as, “You have already failed 100% of

the shots you didn’t take.” He’s saying

that you will be overcome with the feel-

ing of regret for the things you didn’t

Mrs. Ressa has a wonder ful husband and they

have been married for 19 years. She has three amazing

children. She has two sons and a daughter; they all are

sophomores in high school. Her two sons are adopted from

Guatemala. She said “ that having three children all the

same age is like having triplets with different birthdays.”

She has a dog, Guinea -pig, and three rabbits. She has two

favorite holidays, Christmas and Thanksgiving. These are

her favorite holidays because she gets to she her family

from all over the country. She likes Christmas because she

likes the long break. She reads and makes jewelry in her

spare time. She likes all sweets especially ice-cream. She

came to Syracuse Arts Academy because she had some

neighbors that came here and they really liked it so she

came her too. She said “ I was an aid for the school last

year and I choose to teach math because I really like math

and I wanted to teach other people too.” If she were to

teach another subject she would teach personal finance. If

she were to teach another grade beside the seventh graders,

she would teach high school students math.

Mr. Matty worked at Utah Connections Academy be-

fore he became the vice principal of Syracuse Arts Academy.

This year, he is planning to change the culture of the school.

He wants to do what is best for the students at SAA.

In, Jr. high, he did plenty of activities. He was a part

of musicals, choirs, bands, and sports. The sports he played

were soccer (right striker), baseball, racquetball, tennis, bas-

ketball, volleyball, track, and gymnastics (favorite event is

the floor).

Mr. Matty’s words of encouragement for all students is

“Tough days come and go. Don’t let one moment ruin your

life.” He wants everyone to know that he is there for all stu-

dents.

Mr. Pfister was raised in Round Up, Montana. As a Jr. High

and High School student he loved to play sports like track, football,

and basketball. He was a SBO class president his senior year. Mr.

Pfister’s favorite color is navy blue.

Before he came to Syracuse Arts he worked in the weber

school district for 32 year. He was also principals and teachers at oth-

er schools. He even taught a woodshop and metal making class!

Mr. Pfister wants to let all the students know that education is

important and to trust your teachers, administration, and parents.

Mr. Pfister is the new principal and Mr. Matty is the new vice principal this year at Syracuse

Arts Academy. They are so excited to be with us. Many of the students, parents, and even

teachers have not gotten to know them very well yet, so the newsletter decided to do an inter-

view with both of them.

Page 7: THE DRAGON’S PUFF › pkbwRZpe5...much more fun to watch the kids run, rather than me waddle.” This is more than enough reason to join a team here at S.A.A, but if cross country

“A charging horde of red descending upon the masses. We have one of the biggest cross coun-

try in the state for Jr.High, and it is so much fun when we show up and everyone looks at us and goes

“ugh”. Having 20 on their team, while we have over 100 on ours. It’s fun.” This is what coach and

teacher, Lance Hislop said when asked what he wanted the team to look like this year for cross coun-

try, boys and girls teams. Mr. Hislop is not only the Geography teacher, but also, keyboarding, and

coaches the cross country team, and was willing to give up some of his time in order to give his input.

Kylee Sales and Lorynn Hamblin were the two individuals interviewing Mr. Hislop. The questions

included things like; why is it important to join a team, his promises from being on the team, his pre-

vious year’s accomplishments, and those for this year, and the requirements to be on the team. His an-

swers are as follows.

“Cross country is such an important sport to be a part of because not only does it not have cuts,

but it will prepare you for other sports as well as having the potential to keep you healthy your entire

life.”

As many of us know, when Mr. Hislop makes a promise, he intends to keep it, this was his

promise for cross country. “I can promise you’ll improve, and you’ll feel good as long as you try your

best this season. Although this can be a very fun sport but, it can be challenging in the first couple

weeks until you are in shape.”

Mr. Hislop is also very competitive and had the following to say about his previous accom-

plishments and what he hopes for this season. “Our boys’ team has won 3 or 4 regions and 2 trophies

for state, while the girls have 6 regions and 2 state trophies. This season, we are playing against the

best team in the nation, Mount Ogden, so, I’m hoping to have both boys and girls teams in 2nd for re-

gions. Unfortunately, there is no state competition this year.”

Just as well as any other sport at S.A.A., anyone running on the team, cannot have any F’s or

U’s from the previous term or the ongoing term, as well as a required physical. The same amount of

payment is also required for every sport, the initial 45$ payment and a 10$ for a shirt that is yours to

keep at the end of the season.

As a final note, Mr. Hislop left with an outstanding, too good to share idea, “I’m very glad we

have the kids to compete instead of the coaches, because we have so much more competition, and it’s

much more fun to watch the kids run, rather than me waddle.”

This is more than enough reason to join a team here at S.A.A, but if cross country isn’t really

the best fit for you, here’s a list of coming up sports (Excluding girls soccer, which is going on cur-

rently) and the coaches. Hope to see you out on the field!

Girls Volleyball- Sarah Reed (head coach and a teacher) Jessica Farnsworth (Assistant and a teacher)

Girls Basketball- Roxanne Shipman (head coach and a teacher) Meredith Hals (Assistant)

Boys Basketball- Adrian Duren (head coach) Dave Henson (Assistant and a teacher)

Girls Soccer- Henry Tran

Boys Soccer- Melissa Miles and Rob Miles

Baseball (boys only) - Haylee Velesquez (also a teacher)

Did you hear that one of the lunch ladies has six toes and the janitor always wears a hat because he has

snakes for hair. The chatter in the hallway reveals one of the ninth grade boy’s has secret super powers. Did

you know one of the Science teachers can fly? I heard that they will start serving ice cream bar for lunch

every Friday. Last week someone overheard the secretaries talking about how Donald Trump is going to

visit the school and that Hillary Clinton is going to stop by and bring everyone cookies. A couple of the sev-

enth grade girls were overheard saying they saw one of the cheerleaders at Rush over the summer and when

her hair gets wet it turns blue! October is almost here and Black Island Farms is open, speaking of which

did you know the people that work there are actually werewolves and every full moon they turn, and reap

havoc on the nearby neighborhood! On one of my usual trips to the Fizz I heard a couple of kids talking

about how the building was haunted. At night after it closes the soda machines turn on and spray every-

where and the lights flicker, chairs fly across the room! More news from the upstairs hallway reveals there

will not be fall break for any student who has missing assignments. They will be required to stay at the

school until all of their work is turned in. The gossip from the locker room is, one of the jocks has a funky

fungus growing in between his toes that’s a nasty shade of green. A couple of the guitar students were

caught talking about how Mr. Whipple used to be a rock star but decided teaching was more important than

the fame. One of the eight grade girls overheard two of the math teachers talking about how they are Roller

Derby doll’s on the weekend. Did you hear that Mr. Matty is secretly a Ninja? I have been listening and I

cannot believe all of this, but maybe it’s true?

Shakespeare Competition

This will be our third year competing in the Utah Shakespeare Festival Competition. Ms. Burke

has been working hard to help our students be more involved with performing the works of Wil-

liam Shakespeare. Students audition and are chosen to represent Syracuse Arts Academy as part

of our Shakespeare Team. Our 2016 Team is: 7th--Issac Allred & Taylor Sachs; 8th--Jaz Burke,

Andrew Bayn, Abby Fielding, Brooklyn Shearer, & Michael Painter; and 9th--Cassie Rat-

liff. Students will compete with monologues and scenes against students who travel from all over

the country to compete in the festival. They also will have the opportunity to attend workshops

with professional Shakespeare instructors and performers. The competition will take place in Ce-

dar City the weekend of October 7-9th. We wish them the best in the competition this year!

Thanks!
