THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP

• The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the world’s premier jockeys’ competition, a unique event where three top riders in each of four teams - Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and The Girls - battle against each other in a thrilling six-race showdown.

• The Girls team is captained Canada’s Emma-Jayne Wilson, a Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup regular who captained The Girls to an historic win in 2015. She is joined by Hayley Turner, who has c0me out of retirement to ride at the event for the 10th time and Josephine Gordon, who is making her Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup debut.

• Brazilian-born Silvestre De Sousa, the reigning Stobart Champion Jockey in Britain, leads the Rest Of The World team, which also features leading Japanese rider Kenichi Ikezoe and South African ace Gavin Lerena. All three are making their debuts at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.

• Team Europe is captained by Frankie Dettori, who will be making his 10th appearance at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. The Italian, who is rapidly approaching 3,000 winners in the UK, is joined by two of France’s leading jockeys in Pierre- Charles Boudot and Thierry Jarnet, who are both riding in the competition for the first time.

• Joe Fanning, long-associated with the Mark Johnston stable, captains the Great Britain & Ireland team which also consists of Martin Harley, who landed the 2015 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot on Goldream and Oisin Murphy, who is retained rider for Qatar Racing Limited. They are participating in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup for the first time.

• The six races are limited to 10 runners with either two or three horses racing for each team (this will balance itself out over the course of the afternoon), and points are awarded on a 15, 10, 7, 5, 3 basis to the first five horses home (non-runners score 4 points). Subject to full fields, each jockey has five rides and the team with the highest total after the sixth race lifts the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.

• The jockey amassing the most individual points will take home an additional £3,000 plus the Alistair Haggis “Silver Saddle” trophy.

• All six races are handicaps and all will be run with identical prize money - £45,000 per race.

• There are two reserves per race, who can be utilised up to 45 minutes before each contest is run.

• Owners have a fantastic opportunity on Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Day - there are no entry fees for the races, there is prize money down to last place (with reserves that miss out on a run paid £500 appearance money) and there is complimentary hospitality throughout the day.

• Dubai Duty Free has been associated with the Shergar Cup since its inception, initially as team sponsor of the Rest of the World team and as a race sponsor. In 2006, the company became title sponsor for the first time and since 2014 has sponsored the entire event.

• The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is being run for the 16th time at Ascot. The Shergar Cup first took place at Ascot in 2000 as a jockeys’ competition. It has gone from strength to strength ever since, attracting bumper crowds year after year. It did not take place in 2005 when the racecourse was being redeveloped.

• The jockeys competing in the four-team Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will again wear full team colours at this year’s renewal. Please see the jockeys’ biographies section (pages 9-12) for further information about this year’s team colours.

• Cheerleaders will welcome the winning rider back after each race and be part of the opening and closing ceremonies.

• Each team will have an anthem for the day, played whenever they have a winner - GB&I: The Boys Are Back in Town; ROW: Rockin All Over The World; GIRLS: Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves; EUR: Ca Plane Pour Moi.

• The first two races on Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup day will be broadcast on More4, with the remaining four contests shown on Channel 4, making it the only raceday outside of Royal Ascot to be covered in its entirety by the broadcaster.

• Away from the track, the racing will be followed by the ever-popular Ascot Live - a free concert for racegoers featuring Ronan Keating, Gabrielle, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Lawson and the Music Of Queen. King Edward VII Enclosure ticket holders enjoy priority access to the front section by the stage. There will also be a fairground (included in the price of a ticket) on the Bandstand Lawns, Champagne and cocktail bars and a wide range of restaurants to visit before the music commences.

THE PRIZES

THE SHERGAR CUP

At stake for the winning team is the magnificent Shergar Cup, which depicts the mighty 1981 Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner. It was graciously provided by His Highness The Aga Khan, who owned Shergar. Points will be awarded to the first five horses to finish in each of the six Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup races as follows - winner: 15 points; second: 10 points; third: 7 points; fourth: 5 points; fifth: 3 points. If there is a non-runner which cannot be replaced by a reserve, 4 points will be awarded both to the team and jockey missing out on the ride. The team with the most points after the six races have been run will receive the Shergar Cup at the closing ceremony. If a dead-heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and shared between the two jockeys/teams. If there is a tie for the Team or Silver Saddle competitions, there will be a countback on the number of winners and the team/jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall; if they are still level, then second places will be counted, then if necessary third places and then if necessary fourth places. If they are still level, there will be joint winners. The six races are worth a total of £270,000 in prize money, paid down to 10th (last) place in all six races. With no entry fees to pay and £500 in number cloth sponsorship per contest for the Channel 4-televised races, these are the only races run during the year in Britain when every owner represented by a runner should be guaranteed to, at the very least, cover their costs.

STABLE STAFF AWARDS

Stable staff will once again benefit from special prizes worth over £5,000, more than on any other raceday in Britain. There is a £200 prize for the groom in charge of the best turned out horse in every race, while the winning lad or lass in each race will also receive £200. In addition, £100 will be given to the lad or lass leading up the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th horses (i.e. the other points’ scorers) in every race. Stable staff will enjoy free food and drink in the stable staff canteen.

RESERVES There are two reserves for every race. A reserve can be brought in up to 45 minutes before each race. Runners have to declare to run one hour before each race, at which point there is a 15-minute window in which to bring in a reserve if there is a non-runner. Reserves that do not get a run will receive a £500 travel allowance.

WINNING POST - OFFICIAL BOOKMAKER For the third year, Winning Post is the official bookmaker to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. Winning Post was established 30 years ago by Roy Holbrook with its first shop in Filton on the north side of Bristol. NEW TOTEPOOL TEAM BET LAUNCHED For the first time, totepool will be offering racegoers the opportunity to bet on the winning team at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. Adam Smith, Marketing Manager for totepool, said: “We’re starting off on a relatively small scale – the bet will be available only on-course – but we intend to promote it quite heavily at the track and are excited about it. “Customers can back a team to win the Shergar Cup. It’s a four-runner race and a bet that will last all day. The aim is to keep it as simple as possible.”

DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP RULES The competition is an international jockeys’ tournament with 12 riders taking part, three in each of the four teams - The Girls (GIRLS) Great Britain & Ireland (GBI), Europe (EUR) and the Rest of the World (ROW). All horses entered are eligible to represent one of the four teams, regardless of ownership, and to be ridden by any of the jockeys participating in the competition. The six races will be limited to 10 runners and two reserves. Reserves must travel to Ascot on the day and can be substituted up until 45 minutes before their race. Reserves who do not run will be paid £500. Entries must be made by noon on Monday, August 1. Declarations to run must be made at the 48-hour stage, by 10.00am on Thursday, August 4. The top 10 in the weights (including penalties) at the 48-hour declaration stage will run, with those horses 11th

and 12th in the weights acting as reserves.

DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP DRAW PROCEDURE The British Horseracing Authority has granted special permission to the Ascot Racecourse Executive to stage a Draw on Thursday, August 4, at which jockeys from the four competing teams will be allocated horses.

ALLOCATION OF HORSES TO TEAMS AND JOCKEYS TO MOUNTS 1. In all races, the horses selected to run will be the top 10 in the handicap.

2. Once the final fields are known on Thursday, August 4, the 10 runners in each race will be ranked from 1 to 10 by form experts/odds compilers from Winning Post, the Official Bookmaker to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. A formula has been created to ensure that each of the four teams - Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and The Girls - receives a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses and, further to that, that each of the three jockeys representing each team also gets a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses for his/her five rides.

3. Once the ranking process has been completed, the four team names will go into a ballot. The order in which they are randomly drawn will determine which set of horses is allocated to each team.

4. A second ballot will then take place. The three jockeys representing each team will be drawn at random to determine an order (e.g. The Girls 1, The Girls 2 & The Girls 3) and will then be allocated to their rides according to the set formula.

5. The allocation of rides by this method will be final. Any trainer declaring a horse to run at the 48-hour declaration stage is deemed to have accepted these conditions.

6. All owners of participating horses agree that jockeys will wear the colours of the team which they represent as part of an agreement with the Racehorse Owners Association.

GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND

Joe Fanning (Ireland, Captain) Born: September 24, 1970, Dublin. Background: Joseph Kevin Fanning was brought up in Co. Wicklow with ponies and point-to-pointers. He graduated from the Irish racing school RACE in 1986. He first worked in Ireland - as a five-and-a-half stone apprentice - for Mick Connolly in Co Kildare. He moved on to Liam Browne, as well as having a spell in England with Henry Candy. He joined Tommy ‘Squeak’ Fairhurst’s Middleham yard in Yorkshire with the intention of becoming a jump jockey, as he was fighting a battle with the scales. His first and only jump winner came on Holdenby in a Sedgefield handicap hurdle on November 14, 1989. After a bad fall at Newcastle, where he broke a bone in his neck, Fanning lost weight and subsequently had no problem in maintaining a new lighter frame. He rode his first Flat winner, also trained by Fairhurst, on Henry Will at Yarmouth on June 9, 1990. Three years later, he enjoyed the first big win of his career on Highflying in the Northumberland Plate. Still based in North Yorkshire, he rides principally for Mark Johnston. He has had seven Royal Ascot winners, all for Johnston, including Boscobel in the 2007 King Edward VII Stakes. He had great success on Goodwood Cup hero Darasim, also a Group winner on France and Germany. The best horse to have been partnered by Fanning however is probably Shamardal, the 2005 French Guineas, French Derby and

St James’s Palace Stakes victor, whom he rode to the colt’s first two successes in 2004. He has been champion All-Weather jockey twice – in 2009/10 and 2011/12. His best year was in 2012 when he enjoyed 188 British winners and he has had more than 100 successes in a season eight times. His total number of British winners is more than 2,070. Has enjoyed plenty of Group race success but yet to have a G1 victory. Martin Harley (Ireland) Born: July 9, 1989 Background: Graduate of the pony racing circuit and a native of Co. Donegal. Younger brother of trainer Shaun Harley and nephew of Paul, a former jockey who trains in Germany. Originally apprenticed to Jim Bolger, he rode his first winner at Down Royal – Proud Ruler on June 24, 2007. He moved to Mick Channon’s West Ilsley yard in 2011 and was champion apprentice in Britain the following year with 57 wins. Recorded a first Classic success on board the Channon-trained Samitar in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh in May, 2012. Appointed stable jockey to Marco Botti for the 2014 season before becoming a freelance rider at the start of 2015. Fractured four ribs and a bone in his neck at Lingfield in March 2014, but returned to the race riding just three months later. He gained two Group One victories on the Robert Cowell-trained Goldream in 2015 and has enjoyed more than 500 career winners, including three at Royal Ascot. Oisin Murphy (Ireland) Born: September 6, 1995 Background: Nephew of former jump jockey Jim Culloty, who won three Cheltenham Gold Cups on Best Mate and trained the 2014 winner Lord Windermere. Murphy began riding at the age of four and competed in pony races and show jumping. Joined Culloty's Cork yard at the age of 13 before teaming up with trainer Tommy Stack two years later. Started riding out for Ireland's champion Flat trainer Aidan O'Brien at 16 and then moved to England as an apprentice for Andrew Balding in October, 2012. First win came aboard Imperial Glance at Salisbury on June 16, 2013. Capped 2013 with a memorable four-timer on Ayr Gold Cup day, including in the feature on Highland Colori. Had a three-month spell with leading Australian trainer Danny O'Brien in 2013/2014 and gained 13 successes. Crowned champion British apprentice in 2014 after riding 91 winners. Has had plenty of race riding experience in the UAE. Was appointed second jockey behind Andrea Atzeni to Qatar Racing Ltd ahead of 2015 Flat season and became first jockey to the organisation when Atzeni returned to Roger Varian in late 2015. His best year so far came in 2015 when he had 91 British winners, but he is set to beat that total this year. Has partnered over 280 winners. EUROPE Frankie Dettori (Italy, Captain) Born: December 15, 1970, Milan, Italy. Background: the son of Gianfranco, 13-time champion jockey in Italy. Frankie (christened Lanfranco) Dettori arrived from his homeland to join Luca Cumani's Newmarket yard as an apprentice in July, 1985. His first success came on Rif at Turin, Italy, on November 16, 1986, and he rode his first British winner on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood on June 9, 1987. He passed 100 winners for the first time in 1990 when recording 141 successes and created history when riding all seven winners on the Saturday at the Ascot Festival in September, 1996. Dettori survived a horrific plane crash at Newmarket in 2000 in which the pilot was killed. He was retained by Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation in 1993, but it was announced in September, 2012, that the retainer would not be renewed. It was subsequently revealed he had failed a drugs test whilst riding in France. On December 5, 2012, Dettori was suspended from riding for six months after being found guilty of taking a prohibited substance, believed to be cocaine. He returned from his ban at the 2013 Investec Derby Festival and became retained rider for Sheikh Joaan Al Thani in July, 2013, whose horses run under the Al Shaqab Racing banner. He is married to Catherine and they have five children. His best total of British winners – 233 – came in 1994 and he has enjoyed over

more than 100 such winners in a season 14 times. He has ridden over 100 winners at Group One level and is rapidly closing in on 3,000 British wins – achieved his 2,996th on Haddajah at Chelmsford City on August 2. Accolades/achievements: British champion apprentice in 1989 and champion jockey three times (1994, 1995 and 2004). Awarded an honorary MBE in December, 2000. Celebrated his 500th Group race victory on Dabirsim in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagadere at Longchamp on October 2, 2011. He is the most successful current jockey at Royal Ascot with 56 successes. Thierry Jarnet (France) Born: March 24, 1967 Background: The son of a bar and restaurant owner in the Alpes Maritimes region of south-east France, Thierry Jarnet began working in a training yard at Maisons-Laffitte at the age of 15. He rode his first winner aboard Danini at Cagnes-Sur-Mer on February 17, 1985 and there followed spells in various yards at Chantilly and three months in America before he joined Alain de Royer-Dupre on a six-month contract. By this time he had caught the eye of the French champion trainer Andre Fabre, who offered him the job as stable jockey in 1991. He became French champion jockey in 1992 and also gained title for the next three seasons until Olivier Peslier broke his reign in 1996. He was associated with many of Fabre’s best horses of the 1990s including Subotica, Pennekamp, Tel Quel and Slickly. He split with Fabre is 2000 and became a freelance. His biggest successes in recent years have come aboard the great mare Treve, winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2013 and 2014. Has enjoyed over 2,250 career winners, including 40 Group Ones. Pierre-Charles Boudot (France) Born: December 21, 1992 Background: Son of Marc Boudot, a well-known jump trainer in Burgundy who died of a brain tumour at the age of 55 in January, 2008. He always wanted to be a jockey and attended the racing school at Gouvieux before becoming an apprentice jockey for Andre Fabre. Had his first ride at Loudeac on March 29, 2009 and registered a first win on 19 April of the same year as the Fabre-trained Pampeana triumphed at Meral. Gained a first Pattern victory when Brigantin landed the G3 Prix de Lutece in September, 2010. Made his British debut at Royal Ascot in 2011, when partnering Brigantin to finish third in the G1 Gold Cup. Registered a first Group One success on Gallante in the Grand Prix de Paris in July, 2014. Has partnered Esoterique to three G1 wins, including a first British G1 victory in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket in October, 2015. Finished third in the French jockeys’ championship in both 2013 and 2014 before securing a first Cravache d’Or in 2015, when he shared the title with Christophe Soumillon – Boudot won the final race of the year at Pau on December 31 to equal Soumillon’s 179 victories. He has had more than 800 successes and enjoys a commanding lead in the French jockeys’ title this year. Has had four rides at Ascot and is waiting for his first winner at the track. Emma-Jayne Wilson (Canada, Captain) Born September 1, 1981, Brampton, Ontario, Canada Background: Emma-Jayne Wilson is the winning-most female jockey of all-time in Canada (with 1,348 winners in North America as of August 1, 2016 - she has ridden in 9,882 North American races and her mounts have earned $65,842,020). She is only one of two female Canadian jockeys to have partnered over 1,000 winners (after the legendary Francine Villeneuve), achieving this on September 16, 2012. Wilson burst onto the North American racing scene in 2005 when landing the riding title at Woodbine, Canada. At its 167-day meet, Wilson partnered 175 winners from 1,096 mounts, becoming the first female to take the title in the racecourse’s 50-year history, and only the third ever apprentice to do so, following Sandy Hawley in 1969 and Mickey Walls in 1991. She started riding at the age of nine and soon had her heart set on becoming a jockey. Studied equine management at the University of Guelph and spent two years riding out at Woodbine Racecourse, where she caught the eye of leading agent Mike Luider. Gained her first winner on only her second ride - a horse called Ali Olah at Fort Erie, on August 28, 2004, and enjoyed an annus mirabilis in her first full season as an apprentice, recording a first Stakes victory on board Classic Stamp in the Grade Two Bell Canadian Handicap to go with her leading jockey title at Woodbine. Her

achievements on the racetrack were rewarded with a Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey (with 146 wins for the year) and an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in North America - becoming only the second woman ever to land the apprentice Eclipse award. Wilson retained her leading jockeys’ title at Woodbine in 2006 with 144 successes and received a second Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. Became the first female rider to win the Grade One Queen’s Plate, part of Canada’s Triple Crown, when scoring on board Mike Fox in June, 2007. Competed in the Hong Kong International Jockey Challenge in December, 2007, and was granted a licence to ride in the former colony the following winter. She was out of action for nearly three months following a fall at Woodbine in August 21, 2010, when she suffered a lacerated liver. Wilson made an impressive debut at the Breeders’ Cup in November, 2011, partnering Excaper to finish second behind Wrote in the Grade One Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and gained another Grade One success on Interpol in the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes at Woodbine on September 13, 2015. Since 2005, she has finished in the top 100 jockeys by earnings each year in North America, 28th in 2005; 31st in 2006; 22nd in 2007; 30th in 2008; 36th in 2009; 61st in 2010; 18th in 2011 with earnings of US$7,157,347; 30th in 2012 ; 41st in 2013, 42nd in 2014 and 64th in 2015. Hayley Turner (England)

Born: January 3, 1983, Nottingham Background: Hayley Turner, the joint champion UK apprentice in 2005, is the

most successful female jockey in British racing history. Turner was taught to ride by her mother, a riding instructor.

She started riding out for local trainer Mark Polglase, who supplied her first winner, Generate, at Pontefract on June

4, 2000. She also attended the Northern Racing College, and then was apprenticed to Michael Bell in Newmarket. She

spent 13 years riding for Bell until a split was announced in June, 2013. She announced her retirement from race riding

in November, 2015, but is returning to the saddle just for the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and has recently had

some rides in preparation. Accolades: Turner became the first woman to be crowned champion apprentice when

partnering 44 winners during the 2005 Flat (turf) season, sharing the title with Saleem Golam. She also became only

the fourth woman in Britain to ride out her apprentice claim, following Emma O’Gorman, Alex Greaves and Lisa Jones.

Her success during the 2005 season led to Turner being awarded a Lester for apprentice jockey of the year, the first

woman ever to gain that accolade. In 2008, she became the first female jockey to partner 100 winners in a calendar

year in Britain. She has ridden over 750 winners. She was awarded an OBE in The Queen’s Birthday honours list in June this year for

services to horse racing. Big-Race Wins include: Turner’s first Group One victory came in July, 2011, aboard the David Simcock-

trained Dream Ahead in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket and she enjoyed further Group One success when the Bell-trained Margot

winner in Britain and the first to win one outright as Alex Greaves’ success came when her mount Ya Malak dead-heated with Coastal

Bluff for the 1997 Nunthorpe Stakes. In 2012, she enjoyed a Grade One victory on the international stage when the Simcock-trained I’m A Dreamer landed the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington, USA. Other Details: Has acted as a pundit on At The Races and also coached the

riders ahead of the 2016 Magnolia Cup Charity Race at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP RECORD – Turner is riding in her 10th Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a joint record alongside Frankie Dettori. She took part in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 & 2015 when in The Girls team that won a thrilling victory after being beaten by a point in 2014. Josephine Gordon (England) Born: May 16, 1993, Devon Background: Josephine Gordon has always wanted to make a career out of working with horses – her mother, Cheryl, runs a 25-horse livery yard near Tiverton in Devon. After catching the racing bug by competing in pony races at the age of 14, she enlisted at the British Racing School in Newmarket at 16. Upon graduating, she joined trainer Annabel Murphy before spending two years with Lambourn handler Jo Hughes. Hughes provided her with the first winner in September, 2013 but she had to wait almost 22 months for her second success, during which time she toyed with the idea of moving to America to become a work rider. The switch to another Lambourn trainer, Stan Moore, has seen her career take off over the last 12 months. She is among Britain’s top 30 jockeys of 2016 (29 winners as of August 3 in the Stobart Flat Jockey’s championship) and is currently involved in a fierce tussle with Tom Marquand at the top of the Stobart Apprentice Jockeys’ Championship table (she is two winners ahead as of August 3 2016). Silvestre De Sousa (Brazil, Captain) Born: December 31, 1980 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Background: Youngest of 10 siblings and learned to ride on his father's farm. Displayed little desire to try making a career out of riding and left to work at his brother's furniture factory at the age of 16. It was only after a chance meeting with Fausto Durso, a jockey who suggested his size and light frame made him ideally suited to race riding that de Sousa decided to try his luck as a professional rider. Joined the apprentices' school at Sao Paolo before becoming attached to the stable of the leading local trainer. Concluded his first full season as Brazil's champion apprentice and lost his claim within 16 months of race riding. His riding career was interrupted when he broke an arm in a fall, forcing him to spend over six months on the sidelines. After struggling to make a comeback in Brazil, relocated to Ireland in 2003 to work for trainer Dermot Weld in County Kildare, where he spent two years but lacked race riding opportunities. He had a winter stint in Dubai but was on the verge of returning to Brazil or going to Argentina in 2005 but a chance meeting with one of Dandy Nicholls' staff at the Curragh saw him move to England join the North Yorkshire-based handler. His first victory in the UK was on easy winner Sonic Anthem in a maiden for apprentice riders on the All-Weather at Southwell on New Year's Day, 2006, a race in which his future

wife Vicky Behan finished third. They have a son, Ryan. He spent four productive winters riding in India and was appointed retained rider to Godolphin in February, 2012 but parted ways with Maktoum family's operation in mid-2014 despite enjoying considerable success. He has ridden as a freelance since then and became champion jockey with 132 winners in Britain for the first time in 2015. He spent the end of that year riding in the USA, partnering two winners from 50 rides. He is leading the way in the Stobart Jockeys’ Championship again this year. He has had three Royal Ascot successes and partnered over 1,070 British winners. Kenichi Ikezoe (Japan) Born: July 23, 1979 Background: Son of former jockey and trainer Kaneo Ikezoe. Grew up in the Shiga Prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan. Started race riding in 1998 and enjoyed immediate success, winning his first race just two weeks after making his debut. Enjoyed 38 wins in his first season and was awarded the JRA Jockey Award for top newcomer. Gained a first G1 victory on Arrow Carry in the Oka Sho, the Japanese 1,000 Guineas, in April, 2002. Became the youngest jockey in JRA history to claim the three-year-old Triple Crown in 2011 on board Orfevre. Rode the Japanese Horse of the Year in all of his starts in Japan, including six G1 wins – Christophe Soumillon rode the horse to finish second in the 2012 and 2013 renewals of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Gavin Lerena (South Africa) Born: July 2, 1985, Johannesburg, South Africa Background: Hails from a family steeped in South African horseracing – his great-grandfather and grandfather were both trainers, while his great-uncle Frederick Chappell was a jockey and trainer. Gavin’s uncle Spike is also a jockey-turned-trainer, while his father Tex was a top jockey in South Africa and Mauritius for more than 20 years and then chairman of the South African Jockeys’ Association. He was initially turned down from the South African Jockeys’ Academy after selectors considered that he would grow too large to become a jockey but eventually enrolled following a short spell at an equestrian academy. Rode a record 283 winners as an apprentice – eclipsing the previous best set by Michael Roberts by 23 – and won the apprentices’ title three times (2005, 2006 & 2007). Was crowned champion jockey in South Africa for the first time last year, registering 220 wins for the 2014/2015 season, including a record 42 winners in a single month in June, 2015. He has ridden in China, Dubai, Harare, Hong Kong and Mauritius. Won the Longines International Jockeys’ Championship at Happy Valley, Hong Kong, in December, 2015, capturing two races on the card. REMEMBERING SHERGAR Shergar’s name is etched in racing folklore as much for his headline-grabbing demise as for his exceptional performances on the racecourse, the most scintillating of those being his record-breaking victory in the 1981 Derby. Famously kidnapped by the IRA following his retirement to stud in Ireland, the Aga Khan’s colt was one of the finest Derby winners of the 20th century and without argument the best racehorse of his generation with a lofty Timeform rating of 140. Trained by Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year-old before finishing second to the more experienced Beldale Flutter on his only other outing in what is now the Racing Post Trophy. Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 European Free Handicap, Shergar commenced his Classic season as a 33/1 ante-post chance for the Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length victory in Sandown’s Classic Trial was followed by a 12-length demolition in the Chester Vase. Shergar lined up as the 10/11 favourite for Derby glory at Epsom Downs. He did not disappoint his supporters as he once again accelerated away from rivals to register a stunning 10-length success - the widest winning margin in the long history of the premier Classic. With the Epsom Classic in the bag, Shergar went to the Curragh and added the Irish Derby by four lengths before routing his elders by the same distance in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance contest, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an unexpected twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. The extended mile and three quarters of the world’s oldest Classic proved beyond Shergar’s stamina reserves and he could finish no better than fourth. That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. Valued at £10 million, the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud in Ireland but on February 8, 1983, hooded gunmen seized the stallion. A £2 million ransom was demanded and refused. Shergar’s fate remains a mystery.
