Opthalmic medical technicians, or OpTechs are skilled allied health professionals who work under the direction of an ophthalmologist (Eye MD). The role of an OpTech in an eye care office is to gather patient information, conduct preliminary testing procedures, complete advanced diagnostic procedures, assist with surgical procedures, and capture imaging studies for diagnostic and documentation purposes.

Certification in this profession has existed since 1969 and OpTechs are in very high demand.  The Duke program has 100% job placement.following completion of the program.

The Duke OpTech program is the most affordable certificate program offered through the Duke University School of Medicine. To cover the expenses of tuition, books, campus fees, and living expenses, eligible students may benefit from financial aid through student loans or Veterans’ education benefits.

Questions about tuition and financial aid may be directed to the Duke School of Medicine Financial Aid Office at (919) 684-6649.
