It was the worst manmade ecological disaster in American history. Through 26 first-hand testimonies of survivors, seldom-seen movie footage, previously unpublished photographs, and more, Burns and co-producer Dayton Duncan captured stories of heroic perseverance against enormous odds, providing a historical account of what happened and why on the southern Plains during the farming boom of the early 20th century. “It was as if nature itself had turned against them. But in fact it was the other way around: We had tried to impose our will on nature and the results were catastrophic,” Duncan explained. “The Dust Bowl was a heartbreaking tragedy in the enormous scale of human suffering it caused. But perhaps the biggest tragedy is that it was preventable,” said Burns. “This was an ecosystem — a grassland — that had evolved over millions of years to adjust to the droughts, high winds and violent weather extremes so common to that part of the country. In the space of a few decades at the start of the 20th century, that grassland was uprooted in the middle of a frenzied wheat boom. When a drought returned, all that exposed soil took to the skies, and people worried that the breadbasket of the nation would become the next Sahara desert. The Amagansett Life-Saving Station has been a unique centerpiece of Long Island history since it was built in 1902. Over the course of its history, the dedicated men who worked at the Station saved thousands of lives. In 1942, four Nazi saboteurs were found by coastguardsman John Cullen during a nightly beach patrol in front of the Station. And in 1966, the building was rescued from demolition and purchased for a dollar by Joel Carmichael whose family lived there for the rest of the twentieth century. After Carmichael’s death in 2006, the house was donated back to Amagansett for historical preservation.

The newest documentary from filmmaker Ken Burns chronicles the environmental catastrophe that destroyed the farmlands of the Great Plains in the 1930s. Dust storms of “biblical proportions” turned prairies into deserts and unleashed a massive, deadly pattern that for many seemed to herald the end of the world.

If we show the same neglect to the limits of nature now as we did then, it is entirely possible that this could happen again.”
