Commencement of road repair work at sector -35 and 36 of Kharghar

Kharghar Taloja Welfare Association’sefforts finally yield results

By Ryhea George

KHARGHAR: Thepersistent effort ofKharghar TalojaWelfare Association(KTWA) to get thepotholed roads re-paired has finallyyielded results. TheCity and IndustrialDevelopment Corpora-tion (CIDCO) hasstarted the road repairwork at Sector 35 and36 of Kharghar.

“CIDCO hadassured the com-mencement of roadrepair from 5thFebruary. However, asthere was no sign ofthe promise beingfulfilled even after thesaid deadline, theKTWA decided to startan andolan as thatwas the only optionleft,” said MangeshRanawade, Chairmanof KTWA. The

andolan was staged infront of CIDCO officialsin their premises. “Themembers gatheredfrom 11am till 4pm.The officials finallycomplied and theworks have beenstarted,” he added. Theexecutive engineer MrRaghuvanshi, Engi-neer Mr Panndulehave assured that thework would be com-pleted in two months.

Changing sedentary lifestyle“Health is wealth” thus goes the (old) saying. In the present

times this saying, however, seems to have lost its meaning atleast for a large section of urban populace. Leaving those in showbiz and sports, rarely do we find people giving due importance tohealth. The lifestyles in cities have become sedentary and “lateto bed and late to rise makes a man wealthy and wise” has re-placed the otherwise popular saying. The health to wealth rela-tionship is inversely proportional in the present scenario whereearning wealth if required at the cost of even health, is more prev-alent.

The health has taken backseat in today’s life, but this is notthe end but beginning of more difficult problems, sometimes evengrave than the dearth of wealth. Obesity and its associated prob-lems of heart diseases and diabetes have multiplied at an alarm-ing rate. The sheer pace at which these urban diseases are grow-ing has pressed the panic button in the urbanites. Sooner or laterthey are realizing that striking a balance between the desire toearn and requirement of maintaining a good health is mandatoryin the long term. This has led to the need for urban health carecentres, more so in environment where people have money tospend and no impulse to take care of health the natural way. Healthcare centres equipped with physical trainers and loads of import-ed machines have propped up in every nook and corner of thecity luring people with catchy advertisements. Their promise toset the things right in the shortest possible time is all the moreluring, as time is one commodity, which is scarce in the metropo-lis. Even if this service is available at an exorbitant cost.

In the days when most of the health care centres are makinghay, many spurious centres have also propped up in the neigh-borhood to have the piece of cake. They are promising wondersat nominal cost without any expert trainers or methodologies. Some have come up with magic equipments, others with wonderdrugs or wonder drinks promising to solve all health related prob-lems without any medicine or exercise. Many of such centres arefly-by-night operators who collect fee from large number of peo-ple and wind up one fine night. Also, there have been incidenceswhere more damage has been done, than any good, due to igno-rance and ill-trained instructors.

Maintaining health the natural way is the best solution. If atall, in an environment with cut- throat competition, it becomesunavoidable to pay less attention to health as a matter of surviv-al, then choosing a good reputed health care centre is the rightsolution. Also the government should formulate sound regulationsin issuing licences to these centres so that an average citizendoes not get cheated by the spurious operators.

HC panel asks Environment Department to look into JNPT mangrove ‘violations’NAVI MUMBAI: The

High Court appointedMangrove Protectionand Conservation Com-mittee has asked theState EnvironmentDepartment and Ma-harashtra CoastalZone Management Au-thority (MCZMA) tolook into the com-plaints of mangrovedestruction in JNPTarea.

E n v i r o n m e n tgroups and fisher-men’s forum had ear-lier complained to theCommittee againstmassive killing ofmangroves in the ex-pansion of JNPT’s4th Container Termi-nal. The groups havealso objected to the rec-lamation of 110 hect-ares of the sea for theproject as it could haveserious environmentrepercussions.

Acting on a com-plaint from environ-ment non-profit com-pany NatConnectFoundation, MCZMAhad earlier has askedthe Konkan Divisional

Commissioner andRaigad District Collec-tor to give “due priori-ty” to the issue and fileinspection reports.

Subsequently, ajoint inspection by the

revenue and forestteams have confirmedthat “several’ man-groves have dried updue to blocking of wa-ter flow, SandeepBhandari, a revenueofficial, said

The mangrove com-mittee at its Januarymeeting has trans-ferred the matter tothe Environment de-partment for appropri-ate action, said D Sta-

lin, a panel memberwho also heads Van-ashakti Foundation.

“As per the infor-mation given to us inresponse to our RTI ap-plication MCZMA,

while giving environ-mental clearance toJNPT, had clearlystipulated no construc-tion should be done onmangroves or withinthe 50 mtr buffer zonefrom the sea plants,”

said B N Kumar, direc-tor of NatConnect.

The MCZMA lettersigned by Sanjay San-danshiv, Under Secre-tary in the Environ-ment Department,

asked the divisionalcommissioner and thecollector to verify andtake necessary actionin the matter if any vi-olation of provisions ofCRZ notification of1991 and 2011 and Hon

High Court orders dat-ed 06-10-2011, 27-01-20120 and 17-09-2018are observed.

Citing a recent in-stance, Dilip Koli ofPaaramparik Machhi-

mar Bachao KrutiSamiti said chemicaltankers were also seenflushing out the washinto mangroves, thuschoking them. Manymangroves have driedup due to this. The

wash happens brazen-ly during the high tideperiod of full moon daysleaving many fishdead, Koli alleged.

N a n d a k u m a rPawar, head of ShriEkvira Aai Pratishtansaid, “Information ob-tained by the NGO un-der RTI Act shows thatJNPT planted terres-trial plants in lieu ofmangroves killed. Thisdoes not serve the pur-pose and the killing ofmangroves goes un-compensated.”

The fishing commu-nity and environmentNGOs have earlier op-posed the massive land-fill on 110 hectares ofthe sea and destructionof mangroves in 19.5hectares. Apart fromblocking tidal waterflow, the landfill wouldaffect the lives of fish-ermen, they said.

To begin with, oneneeds to be able todistinguish betweenfacts and opinions, and ascertain wheth-er or not the facts arebased on sufficientdata collected duringthe process of re-search. One cannotafford to makegeneralizations basedon one or two cases. The remedies for

ailments that wehear about, or weightloss tips we receive, may have worked ina couple of cases, butthat does not givethem scientificapproval.

We also tend tonormalize, or perceiveideas we have beenexposed to over theyears as ‘normal’.Just because atradition or practicehas existed forgenerations does notmake it sacrosanct. The reasons certainpractices wereintroduced at a givenpoint of time may notbe relevant in thisday and age. For

instance, decades ago, women were barredfrom entering thekitchen when theywere menstruating soas to ensure that theyrefrained fromphysically laborioustasks and got the restthey needed. Whiletimes and situationshave changed, thesepractices continue tobe followed in count-less homes even tothis day.

Most of us areunaware of our ownsocial conditioning, and do not realizehow we are subcon-sciously trained tothink in a particularmanner. Fromgender role expecta-tions to the value ofmoney to the choicesof subjects, careersand life-partners, tothe tolerance of otherreligions, races andnationalities, or evenour attitudes, preju-dices, tastes andpreferences – our

entire behaviour, infact, is a result of theinfluences that wehave had from ourearly childhood. Weact in certain waysbecause that behav-iour has been deemedappropriate, andrewarded at somepoint. We resistbehaviour that we aretold is deviant orunacceptable, andhas been punished.Yet, we do not ques-tion what is appropri-ate and what is not, because we have notbeen taught toquestion.

However, if we arenot trained to ques-tion and challenge

the information thatis given to us, we willend up believing andaccepting ideas thatmay be damagingand detrimental toour physical andmental well-being. Itis imperative that weclosely scrutinise theinformation wereceive, analyse whatwe observe aroundus, and criticallyevaluate what we aretaught consciously orsubconsciously. Mostimportantly, we needto be more responsi-ble when we dissemi-nate information andensure that we do notforward, post or shareanything and every-thing we come across– for all that glittersis not gold; and goldtoo is not alwayspure.

People eat breadmostly, which just hascarbohydrates. Nutri-tionists say thenutrient value in ruralareas down south iseven greater as manyof them consume ragi.Ragi is rich in VitaminB, fibres, protein, calcium, iron andphosphorus. It isconfirmed that idli and

sambhar are a “com-plete meal”. The riceand urad dal in idliscomplement eachother, making it acomplete protein. Thevegetables and dal inthe sambhar are goodsupplements.

The study foundthat one in fourIndians skip break-fast. Although thenumber of thoseskipping meals werefewer in Chennai,‘skimping’ (eatinginadequately) wasmore prevalent. It isreliably learnt that theeffect of skipping andskimping meals ismore or less the same.Only the intensity willbe lesser in the latter. It was also found thatin Chennai nearly 50%of the housewives, 30%of the elderly and 20%working adults haveonly a beverage forbreakfast.

Some food histori-ans believe idli wasderived from somesteamed rice prepara-tions from Indonesia. It is believed that thisrecipe was invented bythe cooks of the Hindukings who ruled someparts of Indonesia.References to themodern way of making

the idli appear inIndian works onlyafter 1250 CE.

K.T. Achaya, thefood historian, specu-lates that the modernidli might haveoriginated in theregion that is nowIndonesia, which hashad a long tradition offermented food.According to him, cooks employed by theHindu kings of thelocal kingdom mayhave invented thesteamed idli there, andbrought the recipe toIndia during the period800-1200 CE. But thistheory is being ques-tioned by modern foodhistorians.

Generally, the Dosabatter is thinner thanthan the Idli batter. This consistency isrequired to make thecrepe or thin pan-cakes. The Dosa iscrusty and crisp, whilethe Idlis are soft andfluffy.

hanged to deathThe four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape and

murder case — Mukesh Kumar Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay KumarSharma and Akshay Kumar Thakur should be hanged to death at theearliest so that men who keep treating women like sex objects may learna lesson from this incident. It’s a shame that some men keep treatingwomen like sex objects only to play with them. When will our men learnto treat women with dignity? Weren’t they born from a woman’s womb?

Mumbai cricket team is out of reckoning in Ranji Trophy

All said and done; Mumbai Cricket Team is in a bad state and theywere not in a position to scale new heights despite having the best playingconditions available in this part of the state. This year has been badfor Mumbai as they struggled from the beginning and the trend contin-ued for the 41 time Champion side. Now the chances of peeping into theknock out round of the Championship looked diminished. It is indeed yetanother inglorious season for the Mumbai side. Administrative goof-ups,failure of big guns resulted in in early exit of the domestic giants from thetournament.

The State is not doing anything good for the game as we find batsmenplunder runs at the school and university level against below averagebowling sides and once the team is pitted against stiffer opposition thewriting is on the wall. Even this year, Sarfaz Khan amazed on triplehundred and a double hundred but the team was struggling to get firstinnings lead, leave along winning matches. This season, the team suf-fered two early defeats and a solitary win by Mumbai Team is not goodenough.

When Mumbai was basking in the past glory and the other low rankedteams had other ideas and won the crucial matches rather convincinglyagainst former Champions. Just like Indian team batting is good only onpaper and the team fair badly when they play away matches just likeIndian team on overseas conditions. But this time Mumbai side failed athome as well and that is pathetic.

It is indeed a lesson for the Team Management to forget regional biasand select a team without any partiality. Again green top wicket is notfor the Mumbai team’s liking as they crumble in such conditions. Andthey are are good enough against spin as well. It is high time to revampthe side with fresh talent and look for quality bowlers rather than man-aging with military medium stuff. The coach and the captain needs to bechanged and experienced players should be brought into the reckoning. Atotally different outlook can change the mindset of the side for the nextseason. In all Mumbai’s team is facing music for the last couple of sea-sons and this time they were knocked out ratherearly. Mumbai musings continue to haunt the team.

Mumbai Ranji side is facing a ticklish situation as they were derailedby Railways first and now lost to champion side Karnataka. The pity isthat the side could not last for full four days and lost tamely for the secondtime in succession. The batting looked brittle, bowling ordinary and field-ing simply lacking the required standard. Batting failed against bothpace and spin and it was sorry state seeing the players perish in a proces-sion and no one is there to stem the rot. At the local level, batsmen amassruns in hundreds and thousands and when it actually matters, they failand could not cope up with quality bowling. Mumbai out cricket needsthorough introspection and the bowling needs to be pruned up for betterresults against tougher opposition.

Blame game has already started and there is no fighting spirit. Thekiller instinct was lacking. Mumbai team should come up with betterplaying option and the 3-5 months of monsoon rains make them lethargicand fight a losing battle from the day one. Domestic cricket is for spottingtalent and not just for putting up big scores in the lower level matches.Mumbai lack quality spinners and the pace department is also not up tothe mark. Tall and lanky bowlers should be put to test to bowl with thenew ball and more left arm bowlers should be given chance to have betteroption rather than just going through the motion.

Dr. Sahu’s 29 Yrs of Journey in making Ahmedabad Zoo the best model in IndiaBy: Vinod C. Dixit

Can anyone imag-ine that a person canleave a well-paying cor-porate job to take upthe challenge of reviv-ing a collapsed enter-prise? But Dr. R. K.Sahu, the present di-rector of Ahmedabad’sKankaria Zoo, took thisdecision 29 years ago.He left his job withTata Group to take theposition as the head ofa zoo that was deeplyburied in losses.

He joined Tatagroup and worked forthem for almost a yearin different parts of thecountry. Since child-hood he wanted towork for the welfareand conservation ofanimals and birds andthis was a very good op-portunity so he appliedfor the post of the

Head of Kankaria Zoo.He joined in 1990 afterthe death of the legend-ary Reuben David, whofounded the zoo andcontinued to work forit even after his retire-ment. There was lot ofexpectations from himto change the shape ofZoo from very bad sit-uation. He startedworking for the devel-opment of the zoo, thefirst and major chal-lenge for him was toturn the zoo into aprofit making as it wasmaking 42 lakhs lossevery year. In the year1995, he came up withthe idea of open tigerenclosures where visi-tors can see the tigersin an open area andalso tigers were givennatural surroundingsinstead of jail like at-mosphere. He also

came up with the Lionopen enclosures in2000, followed by Bearopen enclosures in 2005and also doubles storeyhospital for animalsand birds in the zoo it-self. He even came upwith the scheme wherecitizens could adopt an-imals and pay for theirdaily activities. Hecame up with the ideaof Reptile house, But-terfly Park and nowwith Nocturnal houseand Crocodile open en-closure.

He has done lot ofimprovement in the in-frastructure of the zoo.Dr. Sahu feels that Zoocan play a major rolefor better plantationand creation of betterenvironment in zoowhere animals and vis-itors both feels com-fortable in all season

especially during sum-mer. Giving Thanks toAhmedabad MunicipalCorporation he saysthat getting funds fornew infra structure isvery tough but Ahmed-abad Municipal Corpo-ration had providedspecial funds for zoodevelopment and mod-ernization of enclosuresand this has helped toconstruct NocturnalHouse.

Today, after puttingin a lot of hard work,he has not only man-aged to turn it into aprofit-making venture, but has also startedseveral welfareschemes for the ani-mals and birds there. It has been more than29 years since Dr. Sahuis taking care as theHead of the KankariaZoo and there is no

doubt that his journeyhas been remarkable.

Dr. Sahu inspiresthe Zoo visitors under-standing for wild ani-mals and spreadsawareness about theneed for conservation ofnatural resources andfor maintaining theecological balance. To-day the Kankaria Zoois the best model in In-dia. Directors like Dr.Sahu are also wellaware about the needto address growing pub-lic skepticism of ani-mal captivity, whichmeans more zoos areworking not only tomake their exhibitsbetter suited for theanimals–but also to beable to demonstratethat to their visitors.

He also keeps a reg-ular check on the qual-ity of food and its sup-

ply for animals andbirds. Most of the ani-mals and birds thathad stopped breedinghave started breedingand this is our biggestachievement. He haseven used certain tech-niques which helpthem breed. His ini-tiative with coming upwith amusement parksand water parks hasturned the zoo intoprofit making. Thisclearly shows that car-ing for animals can re-quire around-the-clockattention in some set-tings. Wildlife biologycan involve workingoutdoors in sometimesdifficult field environ-ments. Today Kankar-ia Zoo stands amongstthe best 14 Zoos in In-dia.
