Basic terms
SPL - Sound pressure level dB - Decibel. An exponential unit of
measurement equaling 1/10th of a bell named after Alexander Graham Bell.
Sound waves - Sound radiates outwardly in a spherical pattern and is absorbed by the ear and recording devices as a wave.
Amplitude - volume. Frequency - pitch.
Basic terms - continued
Velocity - sound travels through the air at 68˚F at approximately 1130 feet per second. The speed increases as the temperature rises.
Cycle - one complete excursion of a wave.
Period - The time required to complete one cycle.
Basic terms - continued
Hertz - A unit of measurement of the number of frequency cycles occurring in one second.
Compression - An area containing higher than normal sound pressure.
Rarefaction - An area containing lower than normal sound pressure.
