ECLKC NewsletterHead Start Disabilities Services NewsletterIssue #5 | December 2009New ResourcesGetting a Hearing Head Start
Hearing loss is the most common birth defect. About one in every 300 babies is born with significant hearing loss, according to the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. The Center’s seven-minute video called Updating Early Childhood Screening Practices explains why babies are screened for hearing loss, how the auditory system works, how screening technology works, and how to correctly use screening equipment. The video is available in Spanish.
ECHO Initiative and Head Start The Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative updates hearing screening practices through otoacoustic emissions screening technology for Head Start children from birth through age three. This PowerPoint presentation with audio provides an overview of ECHO and the available resources, discusses how ECHO can serve Head Start programs, and outlines the expectations between ECHO and Head Start on how to plan the next steps in updating hearing screening practices.
IEP Training Modules The goal of the Head Start Center for Inclusion is to increase the effectiveness of Head Start programs in successfully including children with disabilities. The Center has just added Individualized Education Plan (IEP) training modules to its online resources. Topics include what an IEP is and how to create and use it to meet the classroom needs of children with disabilities.
