The Story of Jamestown Note Guide
Homework: History Frame with Advertisement
Read the article on The Lost Colony of Roanoke to answer the following questions.
•Which of the 5 theories do you agree with and why?
•What else do you know about this colony?
Although Sir Walter Raleigh’s attempts to set up a lasting colony failed, many people still dreamed of living in North America. It was the experience and knowledge gained with the Roanoke colony attempts that prompted England to persist in settling in this area, and would ultimately lead to the establishment of the first permanent English colony in North America.
After the Roanoke colonies failed, Sir Walter Raleigh lost a lot of money. So, joint-stock companies were created so that people could share the cost and profit of creating a new colony. The Virginia Company of London invested in building a new colony in Virginia that would later be called Jamestown.
In 1607 Jamestown is finally settled. Located on the “James River” it was protected by land on three sides and the river would provide easy transport.
Life in Jamestown was harsh, and by 1609 many of the colonists had died of disease while others now faced what was known as the “starving time” brought on by tension between the settlers and the Native Americans and lack of skilled farmers and hunters.
John Smith forced the colonists to farm and build. He also helped re-establish trade with the Native Americans. When Smith had to return to England the colony started to fail again and the colonists actually abandoned the colony. As they sailed away, the met a ship loaded with supplies and new colonists, and Lord De La Warr made them turn around and replaced John Smith as the leader of the colony.
Peace with the Native Americans continued as farmer John Rolfe married Pocahontas. It became clear that Jamestown needed a source of profit and it became tobacco. The tobacco trade grew so large that the skilled farmers of Jamestown took on new colonists as apprentices to learn the trade. They also took on indentured servants who worked for the colonists in return for paid passage to the colony. The growing tobacco plantations caused more tension with the Native Americans…why?
In 1619 the first Africans were brought to Jamestown from the West Indies. Although they were initially treated as indentured servants, they later became slaves.
In the same year, women were sent from London as well…why?
As Jamestown grew, they demanded more freedom from their founders at the Virginia Company.
In 1619 they were allowed to elect their own leaders known as burgesses.
The group, known as the House of Burgesses met for the first time and became a model of government for future English colonies.

The New England Colonies
Puritans vs. Pilgrims Puritans vs. Pilgrims
What they have in common:
Although they both left England in search of religious freedom, they were 2 different groups.
Both groups played an important role in forming the New England colonies
Puritans vs. PilgrimsPuritans vs. Pilgrims
What was the biggest difference:
Puritans – wanted to “purify” the Church of England to get rid of all the Catholic Practices
Pilgrims – broke free from the Church of England; became known as Separatists
Primary Sources:Primary Sources:The Mayflower CompactThe Mayflower Compact
The Pilgrims fled England and went to Holland first before they decided to go to North America. The got permission from the Virginia Company to settle north of Jamestown BUT since the colonists were outside of the land controlled by the Virginia Company they had no government, so…they wrote the Mayflower Compact
