Welcome to the August Edition of the Long Furrow, We hope you are enjoying this spell of fine weather, and taking the opportunity to spend time in your garden or make use of some of the villages green spaces. By now you should have received the Library consultation via the Pink Pages, please take the time to read the information sheet and fill in the response form, it is important that the Parish Council get as many of these back as possible in order to gauge peoples feelings towards our Library, we are also running the Speedwatch article again at the request of the Parish Council due to the poor response from the last issue when only 1 resident expressed an interest, Please take the time to read it, if you would like to make East Goscote a safer place by reducing speeding then your commitment would be greatly appreciated. Also of interest is a Letter sent to the Parish Council regarding the re-location of our Post Office, again, a consultation will be held to gauge Public opinion and your views on this matter would also be greatly appreciated

Kind Regards

Support Rainbows by doing 20 good deeds

Youngsters can support children and young people at Rainbows Hospice by taking on 20 good

deeds this summer holidays.

Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has launched its Do 20 for 20 campaign to

coincide with its 20th birthday celebrations this year.Throughout the summer, children are

encouraged to raise vital funds by doing 20 good deeds in return for a donation from their family.

Every time a good deed is carried out, a sticker is earned for children to complete a challenge

sticker sheet.

Katie Baxter, community and events manager at Rainbows, said: “This is a great way for youngsters

to get involved and support Rainbows, as well as helping out at home and keeping entertained over

the summer. There are lots of things they could do such as going without something, cleaning,

selling things or gardening or they may have plenty of their own ideas.

“People can donate whatever they think the deed is worth and everything raised goes towards

supporting the work of the hospice, which is the only hospice for children and young people with

terminal and life-limiting illnesses in the East Midlands. Raising £10 would pay for an hour’s worth

of care, £20 would fund one hour of physiotherapy and an hour of external bereavement support

would cost £50.

“It would be great to have the support of youngsters in the area, especially in what is such an

important year for us.”

To get involved, call 0800 952113, email [email protected] or visit www.rainbows.co.uk/

Community Speed Watch

East Goscote Parish Council are working with the

Leicestershire County Council and Leicestershire Police to monitor Speeding Vehicles in this area.

To do this we need volunteers, just like you, to help the scheme succeed.

Learn to use a Speed Radar Gun

Previously we have had successful results with over 300 cars caught speeding!

Sessions are usually 1 hour, if you have some time free to help,

Let’s make East Goscote a Safer Place

WHY I TOOK PART IN SPEEDWATCH 2013

I volunteered last year because I was concerned by the speed of vehicles around the village, particularly along Long Furrow and Melton Road.

After training I went out on my first watch with an experienced volunteer. Armed with our radar speed-gun we stood at the side of Long Furrow early one morning and very soon recorded our first offender (38mph in a 30mph zone). My concerns were more than justified when a short while later a vehicle was recorded at 57 mph: nearly double the speed limit!

The speed-gun gave a reading very quickly and operated at long distances. A reading could be taken before a driver had time to react and brake after spotting us in our hi-vis jackets. Amazingly, some drivers did not reduce speed at all; some even accelerated although already over the limit! Unless I'd experienced it I wouldn't have believed it.

During the 2013 Speedwatch 293 drivers were reported for exceeding the speed limits. 98% were travelling at speeds between 36 mph and 49 mph. The point of the campaign is not to catch drivers but to reduce average speeds around the village by persuading drivers to think more consciously about their speed on what are essentially residential roads. This year I hope we will record far fewer.

I was shocked at how little consideration some drivers had when driving on our village roads. It appears that there is always a "reason" for exceeding the speed limit but I would like such drivers to think about their responsibility when at the wheel of a potentially lethal machine. This village has a large population of elderly people and young children; both categories that cannot always respond quickly to danger or even recognise it until it is too late.

If you're thinking of volunteering I'd say "give it a try; it will open your eyes!" and you'll be contributing to road safety around the village.

And a final thought for drivers: if a journey of 5 miles at 40 mph takes 7½ minutes and reducing your speed to 30 mph increases your journey time by just 2½ minutes, are those 2½ minutes so crucial that you'd risk an accident?

If they are, why not set off 2½ minutes earlier?

Girls from Queniborough and East Goscote have held an extra-special birthday party - one to mark the 100th birthday of Brownies.

This year sees hundreds of thousands of Girlguiding members from all over the UK celebrate The Big Brownie Birthday – and our girls chose to hold their own celebration to mark the occasion.

On the 3rd May 2014 almost 100 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Leaders and Trefoil Guild members aged 5 – 75 enjoyed a beautiful sunny day at Topstones near Tilton-on-the-Hill where they tackled The Big Brownie Birthday Challenge – a specially created programme of activities that enabled them to make their own decisions, learn new skills and have fun. Challenges included yoga, go karting, cake decorating, assault course, grass sledging and hip hop dancing. The day was rounded off by songs round the campfire.

Each girl has received a special Big Brownie Birthday Challenge badge to mark her achievement.

We are desperate for new volunteers to help us continue to offer these opportunities to the girls in our village. For more information about The Big Brownie Birthday and how to join Girlguiding – the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK – go to www.girlguiding.org.uk or call Becky Needham on 07985192959.

The 5th Annual Watermead Challenge The Rotary Club of the Wreake Valley organised the fifth annual Watermead Challenge Charity Run at Watermead Park in early July. Although the date clashed with one of the football World Cup semi finals there were a record 275 plus entrants in the three and five mile runs.

The event, this year in aid of the local Syston charity, Textellis.com, set up by Richard Page in aid of his son Ellis, attracted runners of all abilities around what is an attractive lakeside course.

Race Director, Chris Battye, said: "We are delighted with the turnout and the overall success of the event. Money is still coming in but we hope the evening will have raised over £2000 for this worthwhile cause."

You can find out more about the Watermead Challenge and Rotary at www.wreakevalleyrotary.org.uk.

Many thanks

This term at Rainbows we have made as much use as possible of the wonderful jubilee playing field. Two of our guide helpers, Jade and Zara, organised an evening which involved practising catching and throwing and playing fun parachute games which the girls thoroughly enjoyed. Anna also led an evening teaching the girls some football skills.

We made trails for each other to follow by making arrows using chalk, sticks and anything else we could find on the field and took photographs along the way.

All of these activities went towards completion of the ‘Rainbows Roundabout Get Healthy’ badge which the girls completed on the last week by making mini pizzas and fruit kebabs.

On 3rd May some of the girls joined Brownies and Guides at the idyllic setting of Topstones to help the Brownies celebrate their 100th birthday. The weather was glorious as the girls tried activities such as go-karting, yoga, hip-hop, the obstacle course and the climbing wall in order to achieve the Big Brownie Birthday Challenge badge.

All of this would not be possible without funding and we would like to express our thanks to everyone who made cakes and biscuits to sell at the scout fete, you helped us to raise £136.18 which may be used by the district for other future events.

Finally Girlguiding units are run by volunteers and both Queniborough and East Goscote Rainbows require more adult helpers in order to continue running, without this we would not be able to offer our girls a fun, challenging programme. If you think you could have a positive impact on the life of young girls in our community check out our website at www.girlguiding.org.uk and click on the ‘get involved’ tab to discover the benefits of volunteering. Alternatively contact either Becky Needham on 07985192959 or myself on 07508053901.

SAVE OUR LIBRARY

You have probably received by now, a questionnaire from the East Goscote Parish Council, about the Library. What that document does not tell you is that if the Library is fully manned by volunteers, it will only cost each household in the village less than £1 per year.

We need approx 10 volunteers, which will allow each person to work no more than 4 hours per week. All volunteers will be properly trained by County Council employees.

If you are willing to volunteer on this basis, please let the Parish Council know on 2602202 with some urgency.

There should be a Will – and there is a way!

Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get

round to it or continue to put it off as something to do when they’re older. Inertia means that

7 out of 10 people die without a Will, leaving their nearest and dearest to sort out who gets

their money and property – or worse; it all goes to the Crown.

To help local people ensure they have a valid Will in place, we have arranged with twenty

four local Solicitors to reduce their Will Writing charges for the over 50’s during September

and October. A single, uncomplicated Will costs just £35 + VAT during this period which is

a huge saving of around £100 on the normal cost.

There’s been a huge response in earlier years - with hundreds of people gaining peace of

mind by writing their Will during our campaign and many generously choosing to recognise

needy and vulnerable local people by supporting our work through a legacy or donation.

Some of our solicitors are prepared to visit clients in their own home.

Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight! For details of participating Solicitors in your local area, contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233.

HOUSING NEEDS OF THE VILLAGE TO BE ASSESSED

An independent Housing Needs Survey of East Goscote is to be carried out to find out the true extent of housing need in the Parish. Midlands Rural Housing will prepare a questionnaire to be delivered to every household in the village in September. The returned questionnaires will allow a report to be written which will identify whether or not the housing needs, particularly the affordable housing needs, of local people are being met. The survey is being carried out at the request of Charnwood Borough Council with the full permission of the Parish Council.

Please could as many households as possible complete and return the questionnaire (a freepost envelope is provided) either to indicate a housing need or to pass comment on village life and housing issues. All the information is confidential and replies will not be seen by the Parish Council, the Borough Council or any other organisation.

An independent, commissioned survey will provide clear evidence of local housing need and is essential to help both maintain and protect the village and ensure local needs are identified.

Please look out for the survey in late August/early September and rest assured that the Parish Council will be fully consulted on the results and any possible options for solutions that may be required. If you have any questions please contact [email protected].

Want to try running? It is much easier to run with a supportive group than on your own. Wreake Runners are starting a new Beginners Group for both men and women. This is a ten week course starting on Tues 2nd Sept at 7pm meeting at the Hub, Roundhill College, Thurmaston. The price for the course is £15 and the aim is to progress complete beginners to being able to run 30 minutes continuously (using a walk / run program). For more information or to book a place please contact Lyndsey 07789 634722, Helen 07791 707080 or Scott 07828 674061.

ST HILDA’S CHURCH NEWS Early weeks in East Goscote and Thurmaston!

June 25th was a momentous day for me and my family as I was ‘Licensed and Installed’ by Bishop Christopher as the Team Vicar for East Goscote and Thurmaston. St Hilda’s in East Goscote was the venue with standing room only and a few resourceful people even brought camping chairs from their cars!

We received a very warm welcome during the service from many of the local voluntary and civic organisations and the congregation represented many other areas of the life of these communities. It was great to be able to meet in person during the refreshments and to thank people for a warm welcome.

So what of life and work in this community so far? As well as our regular Sunday services which are on the church notice board, I have visited the pre-school and helped out at the Messy Church which meets during term time on the second Thursday of the month at the church. It’s great fun! I have met some residents out and about and in the Cafés and the Library and joined in with the worship at Lingdale Lodge. During these first few weeks what I have noticed is that the sense of community here is strong and many people have commented that East Goscote is a lovely place to live and work.

Well what of the future? During the Licensing service I promised to proclaim the ‘Good News of the Christian message’, in other words to invite anyone to consider what Jesus’ life, ministry and resurrection means for each of us on our life journey. My prayer is that I will be able to live up to that promise and I also hope everyone will experience the Church in East Goscote as approachable, as a place of peace, consolation, of worship and celebration in the years ahead. So do please contact me by phone or email, details on the back page and church notice board, particularly if you are considering a Christening or Wedding, need to talk to a ‘Vicar’ or for anything about the Christian faith in general. I will be glad to help.

Supporting the education of the children of East Goscote

As we all get ready for the new school year it is a good time to reflect on the last year and I am pleased to report that in July we handed a cheque for £2500 to Miss Allison towards improving the IT provision at Broomfield School.

FOBS had a busy year last year and for many of the Committee, myself included, it was a steep learning curve. We introduced some new events and continued with some familiar favourites. One of our greatest successes was the new Great Broomfield Bake Off in which the four houses competed against each other to see whose bake sale could raise the most money. In all the Bake Off raised almost £450 and I was delighted to present the new Bake Off House Shield to the house captains of Broom in the end of term celebration assembly.

We plan to introduce more new events over the coming months so please do keep your eyes peeled in your childrens’ book bags and in future editions of the Long Furrow. We will be kicking off the new year with our AGM on Friday 12 September at the school. The AGM will take place from 1900 to 1930 and it will be your chance to come and find out more about what we did last year ,what we would like to do in the new school year and how you can get more involved. The AGM will be immediately followed by the Big Brain of Broomfield Quiz, a fun quiz night (just for grown ups!) and a chance to catch up with friends new and old. Tickets will be available from the school office from the start of term and the ticket price includes a drink and hot supper (so you don’t have to worry about having tea before you come out!).

Finally we would like to say goodbye and good luck to our former year 6 and hello and welcome to our new foundation children and parents!

Police Officers do their very best to tackle crime & Anti-social behaviour so please be assured that anyone found involved in this will be hunted down and punished in the most appropriate way. I wish to announce that your new Beacon Officer for Wreake Valley villages which includes East Goscote is Pc 540 Thomas Harley who re-cently replaced Pc 4330 Miranda Gent. Thomas is a very knowledgeable and experienced officer who will be tack-ling crime , ASB and local issues. We aim to keep East Goscote a very safe place to live and work. Pc Harley can be contacted by email on Thomas.Harley@leicestershire .pnn.police.uk. It is a rare and frightening prospect to be confronted by an intruder in your own home. I guess that this is something that most of us never even think about, and why should you. After all East Goscote is a very safe place to live with burglaries at a low level.

If ever you were in the situation of coming face to face with an intruder would you know what to do and would you know how the law would protect you ?. Whenever possible you should call the police on 999. The following summarizes the position when you are faced with an intruder in your home, and provides a brief overview of how the police and the crown prosecution service (CPS) will deal with such events.

Does the law protect me? What is `reasonable force`?.

Anyone can use reasonable force to protect themselves or others, or to carry out an arrest or to prevent a crime. You are not expected to make fine judgements over the level of force you use in the heat of the moment. So long as you only do what you honestly and instinctively believe is necessary in the heat of the moment, that would be the strongest evidence of you acting lawfully and in self- defence. This is still the case if you use something to hand as a weapon. As a general rule, the more extreme the circumstances and the fear felt, the more force you can law-fully use in self- defence.

Do I have to wait to be attacked ?.

No , not if you are in your own home and in fear for yourself or others. In those circumstances the law does not require you to wait to be attacked before using defensive force yourself.

What if the intruder dies ?.

If you have acted in reasonable self-defence, as described above, and the intruder dies you will still have acted lawfully. Indeed there are several such cases where the householder has been prosecuted. However, if for exam-ple: having knocked someone unconscious, then decided to further hurt or kill them to punish them; or You knew of an intended intruder and set a trap to hurt or to kill them rather than involve the police, You would be acting with very excessive and gratuitous force and could be prosecuted.

What if I chase them as they run off?

This situation is different as you are no longer acting in self-defence and so the same degree of force may not be reasonable. However, you are still allowed to use reasonable force to recover your property and make a citizen`s arrest. You should consider your own safety and, for example, whether the police have been called. A rugby tackle or a single blow would probably be reasonable. Acting out of malice and revenge with the intent of inflicting pun-ishment through injury or death would not.

Will the police believe the intruder rather than me?

The police weigh all the facts when investigating an incident. This includes the fact that the intruder caused the situation to arise in the first place. I hope that everyone understands that the police have a duty to investigate in-cidents involving a death or injury. Things are not always as they seem. On occasions people pretend a burglary has taken place to cover up other crimes such as a fight between drug dealers.

I sincerely hope that none of us are ever put in the situation of coming face to face with an intruder. I do hope that the above is of help if ever the situation arose. Be safe & stay safe,

PCSO 6507 Brian Geeson, Charnwood Police.

East Goscote Parish Council News

Library Update Library consultation- If you haven’t already filled in a library questionnaire then please could you complete the online library consultation questionnaire or bring a completed paper copy to the Parish Council office, Post Office or Library before September 5th 2014. It is important for every resident to have their input on the future of the East Goscote library.

Grass Cutting The Parish Council are to consider taking over the responsibility of maintaining all grass cutting that is owned by Leicestershire County Council. They have gradually been decreasing the number of grass cuts per year. This is possibly noticeable when we experience certain weathers as some areas of grass will be considerably longer in comparison to others. This is because the areas we are responsible for get cut more frequently. LCC would pay some funding towards this for the next 5 years if we take this over, although it will mean an additional cost to every household in the Parish Council tax.

Village Sign You may notice that our village sign may disappear for a short while, but don’t worry it will be back after it has been refurbished.

The Mound The surrounding wooden fencing to the play area on the mound is planned to be replaced this September with a new metal fence.

Speed Watch We would like to run our speed watch again, but really need some volunteers to run this alongside Parish Councillors. It will consist of a couple of hours training and then help to cover a 2 week period of 2 hourly sessions at your availability. If you are interested in helping with this then please contact the clerk Liz Pizer on 2602202.

A Village e-communication Mailing List If you would like to be included in the mailing list to receive information regarding Events, Neighbourhood Watch, and News, all you have to do is send an email to: [email protected] putting “Mailing List” in the subject line of your email.

THE GREENER GOSCOTE PAGE – AUGUST 2014

TALKING RUBBISH AGAIN The subject of refuse and recycling is usually guaranteed to get people wound up nicely. One City Council not a million miles away (I won't say which one, but not Leicester) recently got into such a pickle over contamination of its recycling collection, serious thought was being given to drastic (equals expensive) solutions. They seem to have pulled back from the brink now but it got me thinking about our situation here in leafy Charnwood.

Lots of good work has been done over the years to make our Borough greener and more pleasant when it comes to household waste but we seem to be stuck with a recycling rate of about 50%. Of course that's loads better than say the early 1990s when our recycling rate was below 1%. Also recycling rate is not the whole story – total weight of waste matters as well. But stuck we seem to be so I have been ferreting about in bins (with permission) to try to find out why. Here's what I have come up with !

STUFF IN THE WRONG PLACE That's non-recyclables in the green bin and recyclables in the black bin - both are a problem. The first leads to contamination of good stuff and the second is just a lost opportunity to get our recycling rate up where we belong. Here are some of the chief offenders:

In the Green Corner

Anything that does not belong there - the list is long so best to check Charnwood's website*.

Worst of all is food waste or containers badly contaminated with food waste.

Things wrapped up with other things – everything should be loose, ready to tip onto a conveyor.

In the Black Corner

Recyclables muddled up with rubbish because it's too messy to separate them.

Contents of combined household waste bins (e.g. bathroom, bedroom etc) bagged up together.

GREEN BIN QUICK REFERENCE – THESE AND ONLY THESE PLEASE*

Cans, tins (including biscuit tins), empty aerosols, clean foil.

Plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays, carrier bags & film and small foam containers (but not blocks).

All types of paper and cardboard, cartons (TetraPak), but not remains of last night's pizza !

Glass bottles and jars.

Next to or on top of the green bin - Big cardboard (make sure it doesn't blow away) and :

Dry batteries in a battery bag – ask the crew or use any clear plastic bag e.g. a freezer bag.

Clothes, household linen, paired shoes, handbags, soft toys in a MIND sack or any suitable sack.

COMPOST CORNER is open at The Green Place, 6 Cossington Road, Sileby for a practical insight into the Muck and Mystery that is nature's own recycling. Visit Complete Wasters website for details.
