Happy New Year Everyone ~
It is with great joy that we announce our updated mission
statement:
We support self-awareness and ease of living and learning
through safe, simple, and effective movement.
This statement propels us into a new day in Edu-K. How does this
affect you, the members of this dynamic, ever-changing
organization? In our drawing out fashion, we invite you to
consider each word in this statement.
! Support--we support others in an open-ended manner
flowing with respect and dignity.
! Self-awareness--it isn’t about us. It is about the individual.
! Ease--this is simple, yet profound
! Living and learning--The Brain
Gym® work extends beyond the
academic environment into our
entire lives.
! Safe--everything we do is within
the realm of “is it appropriate for
the individual at this moment?”
! Simple--learners of all ages and abilities can participate at
some level.
! Effective--the anecdotes have been streaming in for over 20
years.
! Movement--everything we stand for is ensconced in
movement.
Our website will change soon to reflect this new mission. A
preview of the text is:
Brain Gym® International is a nonprofit
organization committed to the principle that
intentional movement is the door to optimal
living and learning.

THE EDU-K UPDATE JANUARY 2009
Greetings once again to our Brain
Gym® community! With 2009
already in full swing, Tips and
Tools is ready to explore the next
step of the balance process. This
month we focus on the pre-
activity, where our noticing
expands.
Done after setting the intention
for the session, the pre-activity
allows us to freeze a moment in
time; it provides a “before” picture
of our readiness to move into the
goal we have chosen. This crucial
step helps us inhabit our mental,
physical and emotional states by
gauging effort versus ease. Have
I “got it” (high gear) or am I still
“getting it” (low gear)?
Many people choose a role-play as
their pre-activity, which “pre-
creates” an interaction with
someone or something. This
could take the form of pretending
to drive a car on a busy highway,
approaching the boss about that
raise, etc. or preparing for an
important exam. The key is to
gently challenge the system with
some aspect of the goal, then
notice the details of how the body
and mind respond.
Some people, however, are not
comfortable “play-acting”, and for
them it’s best to have other active
suggestions available. In those
cases, a whole-body movement
(like dancing or swinging a tennis
racket) or coordination skill
(typing, writing, etc.) can be
equally effective.
Brain Gym ® Instructor/
Consultant Debi Peterson
(Albuquerque, New Mexico) might
ask a client to imagine that his/
her goal is across the room. Walk
towards your goal and notice how
that feels. Or she may use these
simple questions to help the client
deepen self-awareness:
• Notice a place in your body
that feels uneasy in some
way, now. • Notice what emotion you feel
in that place, now. • Notice what words come to
mind as you think about your
situation, now. • Notice where you are on a
scale of one-to-ten, now.
The Edu-K balance format gives
us a specific protocol to foster new
learning, but allows for infinite
variations in the drawing-out
process. When Brain Gym
facilitators speak from their
experience, it helps us all think
differently about our session work.
Thank you, Debi, for so
generously sharing the techniques
you use.
Next month we’ll focus on the
learning menu, and I am
particularly interested in hearing
from those of you who work with
teens. Are they self-conscious
about doing the movements? If
so, how do you get past that? As
usual, please email your thoughts
or questions to
[email protected], referencing
“Tips and Tools” in the subject
line. We love hearing from you!

Spotlight On: Total Core Repatterning (311 TCR)
This course, authored by co-founder, Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D
focuses on the recognition of primitive homolateral reflexes that
can become integrated by repatterning. It includes training in
the latest techniques for integrating primitive reflexes which may
interfere with learning and mature motor control. These tools are
useful for helping all individuals, regardless of neurological or
physiological limitations. Open to students who have taken Edu-K
In Depth., click here.
International Faculty Member, Rita Edwards shares, “In the Total
Core Repatterning course, we learn about these three reflexes,
how to check if they are still present, and how to integrate them.
Paul has combined the Repatterning techniques from Brain Gym
101 with resistance techniques which create heavy work input.
This stimulates the proprioceptive sense which enhances muscle
integration. The concept is brilliant. I have seen such amazing
changes in children and adults. This is...vital to the well being of
our clients to be fully integrated at the core. This is where
movement begins. Without core integration, you are out of
balance in many different ways.”
Pamela Curlee has been a member
of the Educational Kinesiology
Foundation since l984 and has
served on the International Faculty
since l990. She has over 3500
hours of training in Kinesiology and
has taught thousands of people
classes in Brain Gym™ 101,
Visioncircles, Optimal Brain
Organization, 7 Dimensions/In-
Depth, Practicum/Teacher Training,
Touch for Health 1-4, Switched-On
Golf, Switched-On Selling, and Five
Elements/Goal Setting.
Pamela has also been training with
Dr. Svetlana Masgutova since 2002
and has been an International
Faculty Member of the Svetlana
Masgutova Educational Institute™
since 2005. She teaches classes in
Dynamic and Postural Reflex
Integration, Life Long Reflexes
Integration, as well as Tactile
Integration.
She has had the honor of traveling
to numerous cities in the United
States and Canada as well as
teaching and lecturing in South
Africa, Singapore, Slovenia, and
Poland.
Pamela has given numerous
lectures and workshops to public
schools, conferences, trainings, and
educational settings. Her joy and
love of education creates an inviting
atmosphere for co-creation of new
solutions for old problems and
challenges.
Pamela’s BG
Story:
“In 1983 I was
taking a class
in Touch for
Health and the
teacher Patty
Steurer said,
“I have just
met the most
amazing man in California. His
name is Dr. Paul Dennison and he
has created a process that will
change the world. It is called the
Dennison Laterality Repatterning
and I must share it with you.” So
we used to practice the DLR using
14 and 42 muscles just for the fun
of it. In September of 1985, I went
to Telluride and took Brain Gym
101, which was a 6-hour class, and
then the next day I took the In
Depth class and BINGO, I was a
teacher of Brain Gym! All the
material for BG 101 was on one
piece of paper, which, by the way,
included the basis of OBO. I still
have this piece of paper. The In
Depth class included the entire
Movement Reeducation class, which
now stands by itself as a three-day
class! Actually most all of it made
sense and yet to fill in the blanks,
Patty was staying with us, giving
me a live-in tutor!
Patty brought Dr. Dennison to my
hometown to teach ALL the Brain
Gym classes over and over. Out of
nowhere, in the middle of an In
Depth class I heard a clear voice
within said, “You will do this work
full time.” I inwardly replied “Okay.”
I immediately turned to a colleague
and whispered, “ I will be quitting
my job at the college and will be
doing this work full time.” The next
day I turned in my resignation. In
1990 (after five years and 1200
hours of training) I had the honor of
becoming International Faculty.
Yes, the six-hour BG 101 class
made all the difference. I am filled
with gratitude!”

Question:
Is there any recommendation to help stop teeth grinding?
Dave’s Answer:
The Brain Gym activities are intended for educational purposes
only and meant to be used as learning readiness activities to
help the student practice sensory-motor skills for related
learning skills. They are not meant to be a treatment for any
psychological or medical condition. Individuals, parents and
teachers have reported that some participants have exhibited
improved skills after Brain Gym activities were added to their
appropriate educational program. I cannot state unequivocally
that the addition of the Brain Gym activities was responsible for
this change as these were not scientifically controlled situations.
It has been my experience and reported to me by others that
improving the sensory integration skills helps the student to do
their work a little easier and/thus reduce anxiety helping to
relieve stress indicators like teeth grinding to a lesser or greater
extent depending on the individual. This may be helpful to your
son. As always with any exercise program you should consult
with your doctor before beginning the Brain Gym program.
