INTRODUCTION

FABIO SEMENTILLICreative Director

I hope you’ve enjoyed an incredible first half of 2013. I can’t help but be optimistic about the next six months. So far we’ve had the most successful year for our leading competitions. We crowned the Sebastian What’s Next Awards winners, were inspired by the students who won Wella’s Student Competition at America’s Beauty Show, and look forward to awarding the Wella North American Trend Vision winners in just a few weeks. The next 6 months will take us to nearly 10 different cities across North America.

Our second annual flagship event, Connect, will gather our 500 strong, North American Creative Force for a week of relevant inspiration filled with sharing, learning and networking. This incredible week started with the third annual North American Trend Vision Awards, where we crowned our Gold Award Winners.

In addition, this year we launched Hairdressers at Heart, our effort in elevating the profession of hairdressing in North America, with support at every stage of the stylist’s career.

I kindly ask you to dedicate this year to building your profile by attending our shows, Studio seminars, and by mentoring another stylist to share your technical mastery, business building tips and professional conduct. By working together, we can all have long and successful careers.

Greetings to all of our fellow Hairdressers.

We are heading into a new season and much like in fashion and life itself, it’s always exciting to experience fresh concepts that will inspire fabulous new ideas. Take a look at what’s fresh from Wella.

New this season:

• Wella Professionals – we celebrated our winning stylists at the North American Trend Vision Awards in Las Vegas. We further explored The Sound of Color through the Fall/Winter Trend Vision collection of looks known as Soloist. If that wasn’t enough, we made mastering A-List Styling effortless by unleashing the artist in you.

• Sebastian Professionals – in order to be fearless, one must be versatile. Discover artistic versatility through creative color with Cellophanes, haircuts and styles that can be worn in a multitude of ways – perfect for those trendsetters among us.

• NIOXIN – It’s raining men. We continue to expand our design principles this season introducing men’s looks. Also, let us introduce you to our new lightweight styling products that help complete a full look.

As your Education Team, our passion is sharing our many offerings with you in a way that inspires your inner Hairdresser at Heart. We invite you to share your passion and let us customize an Education plan for you and your fellow hairdressers.

WELLA TRENDVISION

MADRID, SPAINLast October, 2,000 salon industry professionals gathered to watch 86 stylists and colorists

showcase their passion and talent at the 2012 Wella Professionals International Trend Vision

Awards. One of the largest competitions of its kind, Trend Vision celebrates the skills of

innovative stylists from around the globe who have an instinctive sense of creativity. In the

end, Philip Ferreira representing Canada emerged victorious, taking home the gold in the

prestigious Color Category.

AN ARTISTS’ JOURNEY TO THE WELLA PROFESSIONALS 2012 INTERNATIONAL TREND VISION AWARDS

“This was the most incredible experience,” said Ferreira of winning. “To be in the presence

of talent like Eugene Souleiman and Josh Wood. I can only hope to inspire young stylists to

compete in this incredible competition as they have for me. What a journey it’s been; now

another is just beginning.”

GO FOR THE GOLD “I’ve been with Wella Professionals since 1995, and the opportunities I’ve had after the win

have been incredible. First Wella flew me to LA to work on a top stylist team shoot for the

NAHAs. Then I was working with the global team in Milan on an editorial shoot for Estetica

magazine. The amount of teaching I do has increased tenfold, which I love because it forces me

to learn new things as well. The doors keep flying open and winning the gold has ignited a new

passion inside of me. I have to thank Wella for continuing to raise the bar for the industry.”

PABLO ALVARADO

“My favorite Wella product is Color Touch and Relights. Recently in one of my seminars, the salon owner was looking for a color formula that would bring back her natural gray / white hair mid-shaft to ends. Wella gives me the tools I need to be a successful educator.”

DOREEN BROWN

“I love Blondor. It cuts through the warmth in the hair. My favorite way to use Blondor is to create pops in the hair by paneling, and adding face framing highlights in the front. I also love the Natural Volume Styling Mousse cocktailed with Create Character. It allows curly hair to remain soft while defining the natural curl in the hair. I diffuse the hair with Dynamic Fix Hair Spray for a soft hold.”

MICHAEL HAASE

“Hairdressing is an attitude of many colors and shapes, each to be respected visually and conceptually in design discipline. Studying the refinement of shape and utilizing innovation, it always brings me back to education: that, is hairdressing. ILLUMINA COLOR is such a wonderful new tool for the art world of hair. The dusty rose effect of 7/43 with 9/60 is so Spring and Summer 2013, and my guests love it.”

PAUL VEGA (COLOR CHARM)

“So many favorites, but I use Color Charm Powder Lightener and Activating Lotion most often in my everyday schedule. Right now, clients are coming in with dark shades and want to go lighter without damaging their hair. In order to get beautiful results when changing into a new color, you have to remove old color. Use it on levels 6 and under to create beautiful caramel shades, and on levels 6 and up for clients who don’t want to go too light.”

OLIVER ADAMS (COLOR CHARM)

“I love Wella Color Charm Powder Lightener, because it gives you a gentle, even lift for all textures of hair. I use it on all different types of clients, because it works very fast and always gives consistent lightening.”

CAROLINE KIM (COLOR CHARM)

“I love the versatility of the Color Charm demi-permanent line. I really like utilizing the “W” series as a color glaze to add more depth and shine to the hair. The demi is my favorite product to use on my male clients to provide them with grey blending. I comb the color through the hair, making sure to gradually blend the sideburns to create a more natural look.”

“ILLUMINA COLOR is one of the newest in the Wella family of color. The new technology allows us to use the color in many ways. This is an amazingly versatile color tool for any salon, and the softness and shine make the client experiences unlike any other. I am using ILLUMINA COLOR to balance the mid-lengths and ends during retouch application, allowing the wonderful luster of ILLUMINA COLOR to add even more shine and reflection to my clients’ color.”

DANA LYSENG

“As a colorist, I have always loved deep, rich, saturated colors. If you look at my portfolio you can really see that. I came to Wella for the intensity in their color, especially the blonde and red families. My favorite product right now is ILLUMINA COLOR; I am so inspired by the softness and sheer finish of this color line.”

“My favorite Wella product is actually a series of products. I am in love with the Pyrazol P5 reds. These intensive red colors that range from level three to level 7 in Koleston Perfect and Color Touch make it possible for me to create the most vibrant, longest-lasting reds there are. Whether I am doing a single, all over process, or creating a dynamic multi-tonal and multi-dimensional red, the Wella Intensive Reds are guaranteed to come through for me.”

JUSTINE HORNICK

“Besides the amazing people and priceless relationships, my favorite product that Wella creates is Magma. I am particularly addicted to the shade /89+. I love the versatility of using it as a lifting agent for both tinted and virgin hair. It is a huge time saver for highlighting when used on its own for a cool or neutral end result.”

PAULA RUFO“Wella embodies everything I love about this industry. Wella fosters creativity and champions innovation wherever you practice your passion and perfect your craft. Wella is committed to our partnership with salons and we are empowering stylists with product innovations and competitions. I am proud to be a part of an education-driven company who provides real opportunity for hairdressers.”

SHIRLEY GORDON

“I love straight and sleek hair. This season, it’s the hot new look on the runways, and it’s becoming a popular request from women of all ages. Glossy panels of pin-straight hair with a delicate flow make a strong, yet simple statement. Of course the ultimate reward to any of these styles is my favorite styling and finishing products. I use the Flowing Form. This prepares the hair for styling. My favorite finishing products are Smooth Brilliance and Oil Reflections– mixed together.“

SEBASTIAN BELIEFSWe believe that our individualities are far too colorful to lock into one look. That’s why we never stand still, but always think ahead, feel forward, look further. Stir up the norm and rise above the conform for unlimited reinvention in hair and styling – or un-vention, as we like to call it.

THE SOURCE OF CREATIVITY

Sebastian shares techniques for cutting, styling and finishing hair based on our unique knowledge and experience:

• How to control hair as an artist, rather than be controlled by it.

• How to create hair fashion by marrying the product with the haircut.

• Push beyond the limits of experience and ability in order to invent a new culture for the future.

SEBASTIAN UNDERSTANDS HAIR BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE

Introducing Alter Ego, the Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection, a platform for reinvention, reinterpretation, and transcendent style.

The Sebastian Stylist Design Team—Marylle Koken, Anthony Cole, Omar Antonio, and Jason Fournier—has taken one cut and pushed the possibilities of one product. Together, they have re-imagined versatile style with the Alter Ego collection.

As part of the collection, each cut has been designed as a foundation. The Design Team’s process for creating these cuts required collaboration and trust with one another, to allow space for artistic experimentation and co-creation.

Highlighting one product, these cuts can be twisted and transformed on an impulse. Versatility enables you to take style as far as it can go. The Alter Ego collection takes you to the next level.

CORE TEAM

“I always say versatility is a crucial skill to have as a hairdresser. You never know

what you are going to be inspired by. There have been times when I have been

moved by the most simple whispers of inspiration, but as a Platform Artist, I

wanted to present it in a grander scale. There are also moments that I have come

across vast inspiration, but in working behind the chair, I want to translate it to a beautiful, wearable style. Having creative

and technical versatility allows me to express my vision freely as an artist.”

SASHA ZOGHI

“I think versatility is what separates Sebastian Professional as a company and me as an artist. Many hair companies put out killer work year after year. But what I have noticed as I have grown with Sebastian is that we can knock out foundationally sound haircuts that look elegant, classy and beautiful to the naked eye. It’s what’s inside that haircut that makes us different. The precision techniques that we use on the interior of the haircut, coupled with our lightweight products, allow us to transform a sleek and edgy look into something raw, fierce, and completely new to the industry.”

JOSH WAGNER

“I was asked to provide a quote for this season’s education book based on a loaded question; “What does Sebastian Professional mean to you?” Well, it means a lot to me. Sebastian Professional has encouraged me, helped develop my confidence and my creativity. It reminded me why I became a hairdresser in the first place–the artistry. Sebastian Professional allowed me to embrace who I really am deep down inside. It allowed me to break out of my shell, but most importantly, it freed me from caring about what others thought about me and to trust in myself. They say, “Everything in life happens for a reason.” I can sincerely say that I would not be who I am today without the influence of this brand.”

CHRISTINA MCCARVEREducation Manager

URBAN TEAM

“Over the course of my career, the most important piece of knowledge that I have gained is to develop versatility.

I believe that passionate hairdressers have a very unique ability to change

and improve lives. I’ve learned that with the diversification of skill, approach and

technique, I develop the inspiration to reach many more subjects to influence

and learn from.“

KRYSTEN GARIBAY

“As a stylist, versatility is the most important

thing. Nothing is like designing a style that

can be changed into so many different looks.

It’s like an illusion, at first you see one thing

and if you stare longer you see another. That

excites me, and is exactly what I love to do

with the art I create with hair.“

ANTHONY COLE

“In order to be a successful stylist, you need

to be versatile. You need to constantly change

your looks, stay current and ahead of the

trend. You have to be able to have an infinite

number of skills in your repertoire. I never

stop learning and practicing my craft. I enjoy

being versatile through color, cuts, and the

tools I use. To me, being versatile means

continually evolving, and that is part of the

fun of being a top stylist..“

MARYLLE KOKEN

“In our profession, versatility is so important.

Challenging yourself constantly helps you to

discover the infinite possibilities. Finding the

right balance is the key to equipping yourself

to be the best stylist you can be. My experience,

education, core values and willingness to do

things that may make me uncomfortable are

what set me apart from others..“

DIVA POULOS“As a creative artist for Sebastian Professional,

I seek inspiration from every aspect of life:

nature, urban city culture, Japanese fashion,

art in the park, etc. It’s my responsibility as an

artist to transform my inspiration into art in

hair fashion. Versatility has always been a key

ingredient to creating art in hair styling. As a

designer, I challenge myself to create haircuts

with edge, disconnected lines and points of

interest. It’s when I apply my liquid tools that

the magic of versatility begins. You’ll find it in

ideas, techniques and executions, all tempting

each artist to challenge themselves and ask,

What’s next?.“

OMAR ANTONIO

“It seems to me that versatility is the seed of every incredible stylist I admire. I believe

that being both capable and adaptable is at the very root of how we obtain greatness in

our industry. Whether it’s being confident and relatable so our guest feels comfortable

and free, being honed and tempered so our creativity can flow in its purest form, or being open and moldable so we can

continue to grow alongside this amazing, ever-changing world of ours. Versatility is a

beautiful thing.”

KYLE AGUON“What is my ability to express versatility as a stylist? It is my internal and external foundation to create a look by a thought, expression, or even a smell. My success comes from continuous study in the art of hair cutting, color, and design. I constantly look at how an oil painter uses textures to allow the eye to naturally see softness or ad height to see build .I have a fascination for patterns and how a seamstress uses balance in the different cuts of fabric. . This allows me more versatility in creating my senses in style. This is my sense of expression in the heart of my canvas.”

NIOXIN IS THE ONLY SALON BRAND WITH OVER 25 YEARS OF SPECIALIZATION IN THINNING HAIR:• 2/3 of American men will have some degree of appreciable hair loss by age 35. By age 50,

approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. For 25% of men, the process of

male pattern baldness starts by age 21.

• For women, fine or thinning hair is not merely an age issue. Thinning can begin at any time,

especially during periods of hormonal change, including post-childbirth and crash dieting.

Symptoms may arise simply from hair treatments or overusing heated styling tools.

“The best advice for a stylist is to partner with their clients to explain the benefits of layering different products, and to teach clients how to create lift at the base. Two of my favorite styling products that are great for layering are Bodifying Foam and Niospray Regular Hold. Light-Plex and Pro-Thick technologies are winning combination within NIOXIN styling.“

“Looking back to my days in cosmetology school, NIOXIN was the product that I associated with the SCIENCE of hair. NIOXIN showed me the importance of both scalp and hair health. Today, I am able to partner with the top stylists to train, create education, and launch innovative products. My goal is to simplify this message to give stylists like myself the confidence to customize‘ solutions for their clients.“

NIOXIN EXPERTS

“With my female clients, I really take some time to dip into my NIOXIN Design Principles. Starting with the color, I recommend going a level darker at the base to make the hair look more dense. I follow up with Cutting Principles, because everyone loves to see a full perimeter. My favorite combination when layering products is Bodifying Foam and Definition Cream. It really provides that moveable, defined body that you are looking for.“

JORDAN LOVEN

MICHELLE BENNETT

VINNIE FERRARA

“I recommend Systems 3, 4, 5 and 6 for my female clients that are concerned about hair thinning and hair loss. Systems 3 through 6 have Glyco-Shield, which safeguards skin and helps preserve hair color. I also recommend that stylists take the NIOXIN Tri-Expert class at the Wella Studios in NY, LA and Canada where you can learn how to master the right tools and techniques in color, cutting and styling for fine, thinning hair.“

DIANE STEVENS

“When working with male clients in the salon, I start with the appropriate NIOXIN System customized for my client’s hair and scalp, which opens the conversation to Scalp Renew’s Dermabrasion service. I share my personal experience of having Scalp Renew services every 4 weeks to maintain my fresh, clean scalp.“

BEKIM OSMANI

“For women, thinning hair can be devastating. NIOXIN is based on skincare and supported by some of the world’s most experienced and well-known hairdressers. I start my clients with a Scalp Renew Dermabrasion Treatment. It’s like a facial for the scalp. Next, I use the NIOXIN Design Principles of cut, color and styling to create a thicker, denser fuller-looking style. Then I prescribe the correct system and styling products for them to take home.“

KATHY JOHNS

JENNIFER YOUNG“Men like things that are easy and basic. So, if your client is hesitant to talk about their thinning issues, you can approach them from the simple side of NIOXIN. Start with Scalp Renew to kick off their NIOXIN experience. They will love the minty sensation and pampering. Use natural, multidimensional color to give dimension and the illusion of denser hair.“

DANIELLE CAPUTO“I would say that 40% of my male clients have thinning hair. The advice I give to them is to use the appropriate 3-part system every time they wash.“

“I hear most thinning hair concerns from my male clientele. I recommend NIOXIN System 5 to my medium to coarser clients. Sending them home with these products, accompanied by a haircut following the NIOXIN cutting principles, helps them gain a sense of pro-activity and confidence realizing they have fuller and thicker-feeling hair.“

JARED RICCARDI

“The woman who requests advice for Fine or Thinning Hair is a woman who has consulted multiple hairdressers for a solution. Often times, she knows only what she doesn’t want. Using the NIOXIN Design Principles for Cut, Color and Styling, we the professionals are able to provide guidance. Take advantage of Lightplex technology and finish with Niospray Regular Hold for thicker-looking hair.“

ANTHONY CROSFIELD

“Approaching a guy with confidence is key. I begin my consultation by asking him, ‘Would you like to have thicker-looking hair today?” And most men agree. I introduce NIOXIN and suggest a customized hair care regimen. At the basin, I use the system selector wheel and instantly my clients are captivated by the NIOXIN brand.“

VISION & PHILOSOPHY

80 YEARS AGOClairol Professional redefined hair color for stylists. In 1931, Lawrence Gelb introduced Instant Clairol Oil Shampoo Tint to America.

1949 marked a culmination of breakthroughs, including the introduction of Miss Clairol Hair Color Bath – an original and revolutionary product that lightened, conditioned and shampooed hair in only 20 minutes. The product paved the way for a 500% growth in salon hair color.

The 60s were focused on education. The publication of the Clairol Institute of Haircoloring’s first edition quickly became a staple reference book for hairstylists.

We continued our product innovation through the 2000s with the launch of SynAIRgy™ technology in the Beautiful Collection’s Advanced Gray Solutions. Revolutionary for its time, the unique method utilizes oxygen to develop color.

At Clairol Professional, we’ve always been about catering to stylists’ needs. Today, we continue the tradition with an emphasis on technological advancement,

innovation, insight, inspiration and education.

WE WROTE THE BOOK ON COLORWe developed the hair color industry on a foundation of professionalism and education, transforming the salon color business and liberating women to reinvent themselves like never before.
