Kara: Every time I hear you on the radio, every time I read something about the Egyptian in the newspaper, every time I see mention of the theatre online or receive an automatic email with calendar information, I think to myself that I really need to let you know what an amazing job you've done for that fine old theatre. You are blessed, of course, with a supportive and connected board, and also with a cadre of volunteers who are dedicated and enthusiastic -- but, still, the lion's share of a lot of the work that gets done is done by you -- and done so well! ABOUT the Director: Kara, our Executive Director/Theatre Manager usually takes this spot to offer her perspectives on The Egyptian and its operation. For this issue, we are borrowing her newsletter inches instead, to gratefully acknowledge Kara’s leadership and commitment to the Egyptian Theatre over the past four years. Kara:

Every time I hear you on the radio, every time I read something about the Egyptian in the newspaper, every time I see mention of the theatre online or receive an automatic email with calendar information, I think to myself that I really need to let you know what an amazing job you've done for that fine old theatre.

You are blessed, of course, with a supportive and connected board, and also with a cadre of volunteers who are dedicated and enthusiastic -- but, still, the lion's share of a lot of the work that gets done is done by you -- and done so well!

I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet and greet you back when you were vis-iting here and applying for the job as executive director. I can remember so well our delight and amazement that someone with your credentials, your ex-pertise and your enthusiasm wanted to join us in maintaining and enhancing the Egyptian.

Although it's likely most of us are accustomed now to your excellent work, we're no less amazed and I'm positive, even more delighted, that you decided to join us, and to become a member not only of the theatre community, but of the larger Bay Area community, as well.

You've done so well, Kara. I'm so glad you're here!

It’s Not Just Movies, Folks!

June 20th marks the four year anniversary of The Egyptian’s grand re-opening. Since that day the theatre has been the chosen venue for a wide variety of events. These include live performance concerts, comedy shows, major fundraisers, weddings, birthday parties, employee appreciation parties, memorial services, public meetings and town halls, employee trainings, educational workshops and, on otherwise shuttered Sunday mornings, services conducted by a local church congregation.

Entertainment for the public has ranged from amateurs to professionals in all genres of music and perform-ance art: rock, classical, jazz, dance, theater, burlesque, comedy and the list goes on. Local public school bands, choirs and private student performers have shared their talents. We even had a gentleman propose to his special lady during a scene from her favorite movie!

The good news is that these varied multi-use opportunities at the Egyptian help to contribute to the thea-tre’s positive financial bottom line. “Applause!”

Yes, there still are the movies as there have been for ninety three years. Nonetheless, it’s been gratifying to see the theatre being used the way the ETPA intended – as a multi-use gathering place where people can have fun and participate in a living part of local history.

The Farmer’s Market is in full swing on Wednesdays during the summer months in downtown Coos Bay with the Egyptian crew of Al and Jan Ellis, Karen Robb, Brian Leigh and Patrick Stack ready to celebrate and promote the theatre. These terrific ETPA Board mem-bers and volunteers offer guided tours, sales of a brand new line of Egyptian products, free organ music by Paul and Lee from noon to one o’clock and a casual meet and greet at-mosphere of new and old memories shared. You’ll find the familiar Egyptian membership cart set up on Broadway under the Egyptian canopy/marquee— you are more than wel-come to stop by and say hello!

Kudos to ETPA Director Brian Leigh who con-structed and hung the fine product-display shelf above the concessions counter in the lobby. Thanks to ETPA Director Laura Fisher for think-ing of it! Recent live performance staging and design has been impres-sive. Thanks to ETPA Director Jeremy Conway for his talents.

Final Resting Place – the Wurlitzer Pipe Organ has been lowered a total of 7” thanks to Directors Paul Quarino and David Engholm. A 3 ½” drop came from the removal of the fourth manual (extraneous). The final 3 ½” were achieved by seating the organ platform on the floor rather than on wheels. This should give patrons better visibility.

Thanks to long-time Egyptian supporter and mover and shaker Coos Bay na-tive Scott Goodman (now of Portland), who orchestrated a free community showing of the documentary, DOLORES, in conjunction with COFLT (Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching), the South Coast ESD and the Coos Hispanic Leadership Committee. The evening was well-attended with several informational displays representing local educational groups and with breakout sessions afterwards at 7-Devils Brewery.
