ENGINE BREAK-INThe EI Tig re Snowmobile req uires a short break- inperiod before the engi ne is subjected 10 heavy 'load condit io ns. The brea k-in pe riod sho uld lastunt i l the fi rst t ankfu l of fue l is consumed.

Page 13: vintagesnow.comvintagesnow.com/Arctic_Cat_files/1981eltigre.pdf · The EI Tigre Snowmobile is equipped with a handlebar tilt feature. To adjust the handlebar, use the following procedure:

During the break-in period, a maximum of 1/2 Fig. 5throttle is recommended; however, brief full-t hrottl e accelerations and var iat ions in dr ivingspeeds contribute to good engine break-in. Afterthe second tankful of fuel (on the 5000, onetankful of a 24:1 fue i mixture for break-i n and onetankfu l of the standard 50:1 fuel mixture), thesno wmobile may be taken to an authorized ArcticCat Snowmobile dealer for a checkup. Thischeckup is at the discre ti on and the expense ofthe sno wmobile owner.

For the 5000, the break-in tankful of fuel should bea 24:1 mixture; therefore, two cans (946 ml or 32 f loz) of Arctic Cat 50: 1 Oil in 22.7 I (6 U.S. gaL) ofgasoline.

Lock Nuts 0726·330

For the 6000, t he break-in tankfu l of fuel should bethe standard 20 :1 mixture (See Gas/Oil Mixing Instructions (6000) section).

•NOTE: It is not necessary to exceed the onetankful lim itation of 24:1 gas/oil mixture

break-in in the 5000. Continuous use of a 24:1gas/oil mixture could cause spark plug foulingand excessive carbon buildup.

HANDLEBAR TILTThe EI Tigre Snowmobile is equipped with ahandl ebar tilt feature. To adjust the handlebar, use the foll owing proc edure:

1. Loosen the four lock nuts securing thehandlebar caps and block directl y above thecon sole (Fig . 5).

Every two years the co ol ing system should bedrained, flushed, and pressure tested for leakage .Take the sno wm obile to an auth or ized Arcti c CatSnowmobile dealer for this service.

DRIVE CLUTCH AND DRIVEN PULLEYThe driven pulley does not require lubrication ;therefo re, no spe cial maintenance is required bythe snowmobile own er. However, th e drive c lutc hshould be lubricated approxlrnatel y every 250miles (See Lubrication - Dri ve Clutch sec ti on). Also, the drive clutch and driven pulley should bedisassembled , cleaned, and inspected by anauthorized Arctic Cat Snowm obile dealer afterevery 1000 miles of operation or at th e end of thesnow mobi ling season, wh ic hever oc cu rs first.

• CAUTION •

00 NOT attempt to service the drive clutch and drivenpulley. The drive clutch and driven pulley must be serviced by an authorized Arctic Cat Snowmobile dealeronly. Servicing thedriveclutchand driven pulley by persons other IIlan an authorized Arctic Cat Snowmobiledealer voids the warranty.

Page 15: vintagesnow.comvintagesnow.com/Arctic_Cat_files/1981eltigre.pdf · The EI Tigre Snowmobile is equipped with a handlebar tilt feature. To adjust the handlebar, use the following procedure:

DRIVE CLUTCH/DRIVEN PULLEY ALIGNMENTThe parallel ism and the offset between the driveclutch and dr iven pulley are set at the factory.Normally, no adj ustment is necessary as long asneither the drive clutch nor the driven pulley isremoved or disassembled. However, if prematuredrive belt failure is experienced or if the drive belttu rns over, the drive clutch/driven pulley al iqnment must be checked. Take the snowmobile toan author ized Arcti c Cat Snow mobi le dea ler forthi s service.

DRIVE CHAIN TENSIONThe dri ve chain must be properi y tensioned forproper operat ion to prevent " ratc het ing" and unnecessary chain/sprocket wear . The chain tensioner in the Arcti c drive system is aut omati c;

therefore, no adjustment is required by thesnowmobi le owner/operator. Arc t ic recom mendsthat the chain , sprockets , chai n tensioner andpads be checked for wear and the chain for p'ropertension annually when preparing the snowmobilefor summer storage. To check the chain ,sprockets, chain tensioner, and pads, remove thechaln-case cover and seai and drai n the lubrica nt.If any of the components of the chai n case aredamaged or wo rn exc es s iv ely, ta ke th esnow mo bi le to an auth orized Ar ct ic CatSnow mobi le dealer for service .

ln-Llne Fuel Fil terArct ic recomm ends that the in-lin e fuel filter bechecked once a month . The in-line fuei filter islocated just before the fue l pump in let filting. Thefil ter must be clean to all ow th e fuel line totransmit the maximum amount of fuel. If t he inlin e fuel f ilter is obst ructed, fuel flow will berestricted; th erefore, the filter must be cleaned orreplaced. To remove and instal l the in-line fuelfi lter , use the following procedure :

fec t engi ne perfor mance, Arc t ic recommends thatmost changes in internal ca rbureto r ca libration(See Select ing Carbure to r Main Jets (6000) section) be made by an authorized Arct ic Cat Snowmobile dea ler; however, four external adjustmentscan be made on each car bureto r. These are th eidle speed screw, swivel adapter, choke cabletravel , and the pilot air screw (Fig. 16 & 17).

•NOTE: Since the ln-llne fuel filter is a onepiece unit, the on ly cleaning possible is to

back-flush the filter using gasoline. The in-l inefuel filter must be repl aced if damaged. Filters areavailable from an authorized Arctic Cat snowmobile dealer.

2. Insta ll the in-line fuel filter in the fuel line sothe arrow on the fi lter points toward the fuelpump.

• CAUTION •7. Rotate each swi vel adapter counterc lockwise

until no free play is felt in the thrott le cable.

9. Carefull y rotate each pilot air screw (Fig. 16)clockwise until lightly seated .

00 NOT overtighten the pilot air screwswhenseating;damage will result.

•NOTE: Due to cable "stretch", it is recornmended to check th roll ie cable tension daily

and adjust both swivel adapters as necessary.

8. Compress the throttle control lever and usingthe fingers , check the synch ronization of thepiston valves. The piston valves must reachthe top of the carburetor bores at the sametime. If one piston valve is lower than theother, rotate its swivel adapter until it is synchronized with the other piston valve. Lockboth swivel adapters by tightening the jamnuts .

The air intake silencer must be secured to the earburetors whenever tho engine is run or when the cerburetors are being adjusted. If the air intake silencer isremoved and the engine is run, a too lean condition willresult; therefore, 00 NOT run the engine with theair intake silencer removed.

1. Be sure ignition key is in the OFF positionand the parking brake is set.

2. Loosen the jam nut securing each chokecable adjuster (Fig. 17). Rotate each chokecable adjuster to obtain 1.5 mm (1/16 in.) freeplay between the choke cable housing andchoke cabie adjuster when choke iever is inthe off position : Lock each adjuster in placeby bottoming each jam nut against its brassplunger cap.

3. Loosen the jam nut securing each swi veladapter (Fig. 17).

• CAUTION •

4. Rotate each swi vel adapter clockwi se untilf ree play is felt in the throttle cable.

5. Remove the air intake silencer boots (Fig. 16).

6. Rotate each idle speed screw (Fig. 16)counterclockwise until its spring is fully extended. Rotate each screw clo ckwise untilth e screw contacts th e piston vaive; thenrotate an additionalj 1/2 turn s.

)

11. Install the air intake silencer boots takingcare that the boots are properly pos itionedand that the boots are not " folded" in the airintake silencer causing a restr iction of airflow.

12. With the snowmobile on a shielded safetystand, start the engi ne and allow it tothoroughly warm up; then "fine tune" the idlespeed screws and the pilot air screws untilthe engi ne idies smoothly at the des ired rpm(2000-2500 rpm is reco mmended).

•NOTE: If the eng ine does not start after thecarburetors have been adjusted, repeat

steps 4 and 7 because the throttle/ign it ionmonitor switch may not be correctly tensioned. Ifall throttle cable slack is not "taken up", themonitor switch will prevent the ignition systemfrom firing the spark plugs.

13. Release the parking brake.

WARNING

DO NOT operate Ihe snowmobile when any componentinthe thronle system isdamaged, frayed, kinked, worn,or improperly adjusled. If the snowmobile is operatedwhen the throttle system is not functioning properly, personal injury could result.

SELECTING CARBURETOR MAIN JETS (6000)On the 6000, carbureto r main jets should bechanged in conjunct ion with temperature andalt it ude for optimum performance (See Main Jet schart).

SPARK PLUGSThe recommended spark plugs to use on the 5000are NGK BR9ES and on the 6000 are NGKBR10EV. Correct gap is 0.5 mm (0.020 in.). Varyingterrain co ndit ions and operating usage may require spark plug s of a diffe rent heat range. For exampl e, sustained cross-country riding will usuallyrequire colder heat-range spark plugs while trai lriding or ot her cont inual slow speed operation wi llusuall y require hotter heat-range spark plugs.

Check ing Spark PlugsTo see if the spark plugs being used are of the proper heat range after the snowmobi le has beenoperated under normal driving co nditions, pull thespark plug caps off the spark plugs, remove thespa rk plugs, and examine the cond it ion of thecenter electrode insul ator of each spark plug (Fig.18).

B. LIGHT GRAY or WHITE insulator indicatesoverheating of the engine. Thi s conditionis caused by a too lean cond it ion or incorrect spark plugs (heat range too hot).

C. BLACK ins ulator indicates fuel in the combustion chamber is not burning completeIy. This cond ition is caused by a too richcondit ion , too much oil, or inc orrect sparkplugs (heat range too cold).

•NOTE: If the center electrode insulators arelight gray, white, or black and if the car

buretor adjustments and ignition timing are correct, different heat-range spark plugs may benecessary. Authorized Arctic Cat Snowmobiledealers have detailed spark plug information. Itmay be wise to consult you r dealer before changing spark plugs, as incorrect heat-range sparkplugs could cause poor engine performance orengine damage.

• CAUTION •

If only one spark plug is light gray, white, or hlack andthe other spark plug is tali or light brown, take thesnowmohile to an authorized Arctic Cat Snowmobiledealer for inspection and servicing.

DRIVE BELTThe dr ive belt transfers power from the dri veclutch to the dr iven pulley. If the belt is worn ,cracked, or stretched, maximum power will not betransmitted and the belt could also fail andtherefore must be replaced . Period ic checks (atleast once a month under norm al use) of two drivebelt specifications are essential:

1. Measure the outside circumference of thedr ive belt.

A. On the 5000, the belt should be 109-110 em(43 1/16-43 7/1 6 in.) in c ircumf erence.

B. On the 6000, th e belt should be 110-111 em(43 7/1 6-431 3/16 in.) in ci rcumference.

2. Meas ure the outside width of the dr ive bel t.The belt shou ld be 34-36 mm (1 11 /32-1 13/32in.) in widt h.

TRACK TENSIONTrack tension is direct ly related to the overall perfo rmance of the snowmobile. If the track is tooloose, it may slap against the tunnel caus ing wearor it may " ratchet" on the track drive sprockets . Ifext remely loose, the idler wheels may cli mb overthe track iugs forcing the track against the tunnelcausing the tra ck to " lock" . If the track is toot ight, premature wear may result to the wearstri ps and rear idler wheels. In add ition, a trackthat has improper tension wi ll prevent thesnowmobile ·from reaching optimum performance. Arct ic recommends that the tra ck tensionbe checked after the f irst 100 miles of operationand once a week thereafter and adju sted according to need. The track will take a "set " duringbreak-in. Because of this " set" , the track defl ection should be within a range of 13-19 mm (1 /2-3/4in.) fo r the first 100 mi les and within a range of25-32 mm (1-1 1/4 In.) thereafter.

Check ing Track Tension

ill WARNING illDO NOT attempt to check or adjusl Irack lension wilhengine running. Turn ignilionkey 10 OFF. Personalinjurycould resull from eontact willi a rolaling lrack.

1. Remove excess ice and snow bu ildup fromthe track , tra ck dr ive sprockets, and the inside of the skid frame.

2. With the fuel tan k nearly emp ty (less than 1/4full ), lay the snowmobiie on its side. A pieceof cardboard shou ld be used to protect thefinish on the hood and bell y pan.

3. Exert moderate pressure (appro ximately 9 kgor 20 Ib) at mid-span of the lower track sect ion. Measure the distance between the bottom of the wear-st rip and the inside surface ofthe track (Fig. 25). The measurement must bewithin a range of 13-19 mm (1 /2-3/4 in.) for thefirst 100 miles and within a range of 25-32 mm(1-1 1/4 in.) thereafter. If the measurement isnot as speci fied , an adjustment is necessary.

even if only one adjustment seems necessary.

WARNING

If jam nuts are not tightened properly, the adjustingbolts could loosen causing the !Jack to become extremely loose and, under some operating conditions, allow the idler wheels to climb over the!Jack lugs forc·ing the track against the tunnel causing the track to"lock". If a track "locks" during operation, serious personal injury could result.

3 . If the distan ce between the bottom of thewear-str ip and the inside surface of the tra ckis iess than specified, loosen the adjustingboits. Loosening the adju st ing bolls movesthe rear idler wheel s forward increasing th eslack in the track.

•NOTE: For maximum performance the trackmust be adjusted just tightly enough to pre

vent "ratcheting" during hard acceleration orbraklnq.

4. Check track ali gnment (See Track Al ignmentsec tion).

30

TRACK ALIGNMENTProper tra ck alignment is obtained when the rearidler wheels are centered between the track dri velugs. Excess ive wear to the idler wheels , dr ivelugs, and track wi ll oc cur if t rack is improperlyali qned . Arctic recommends that the track ali gnment be checked on ce a week or whenever thetrack tension is adj usted.
