Attention: Volunteers Needed!!!

The Elkhart Fire Department is in need of more volunteers. Currently we have 10 volunteers on our roster but due to some going back to college and others moving out of the district, there is a need to seek new potential volunteers. There are no prerequisites to joining other than to be in good medical health and at least 16 years old. Elkhart Historical Society News

The Elkhart Historical Society’s 2018 Calendar featuring “The Old Gillett Farm” is available at the Country Bumpkin or at Horsefeathers. If you have already renewed your membership, you may stop by and pick up your copy, and if you haven’t renewed, or were considering becoming a member, you may also do that at either of the above, for $20 for families, or $15 for Senior Citizen families. The Elkhart Historical Society was formed in 1988 for the purpose of keeping our history and heritage available to the village by being an active part of festivals and education. We offer dinner lectures, tours and wildflower and nature walks throughout the year, as well as the annual Candlelight Service at the Chapel in December. The annual calendar which highlights something pertinent to the village, this year features “the Old Gillett Farm.” It celebrates the Old Gillett Farm, a historical landmark, and one which was occupied by descendants of John Dean Gillett for eight generations starting in 1868. The property may sell in the near future which will mark the end of an era. The Elkhart Historical Society announces the return of Dr. Dennis Campbell at 5:30 pm on Friday, February 23rd with his newest dinner lecture entitled “A Walk Back in Time – Peoples of the Past Within Illinois.” This illustrated dinner lecture at the Wild Hare Café in the Horsefeathers Shop, Elkhart, Illinois, will talk about how Native Americans and Pioneers would have interacted with the environment and how they had to adapt

to the land and its resources. He will touch on cultures as far back as 12,000 years ago during the Paleo-Indian time, through the Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian eras, and then to the more recent Kickapoo farmers and Pioneer settlers. Dr. Campbell obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Texas Tech University with majors in zoology and geology and a PhD degree from the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) working primarily with cave animals. Campbell’s lectures are exciting and thought-provoking, whether the subject is about bats breeding, or the woolly mammoth that was

discovered by a Lincoln College student, the audience remains totally engaged. Having recently retired from 25 years of teaching various earth and life science courses at Lincoln College, his new role is Director of the College's Creekside Outdoor Center. Campbell will explain the “Boardwalk” project at Creekside, which recreates an actual “walk back in time.” You are invited to bring your own list of specific year dates of important events (at the state, country, and world levels) that you think should be labeled on Creekside's Peoples of the Past Boardwalk. The cost per person is $40 which includes the lecture and dinner featuring a choice of Beef or Chicken Pot Pie, garden salad, roll and dessert and beverage. MPHS JANUARY SENIOR OF THE MONTH

Faith Doerr, daughter of Marsha and Scott Doerr of Elkhart, has been named January - Senior-of-the-month at Mount Pulaski High School. She was selected for this honor based on the criteria of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Faith stays actively involved in many of the different sports and organizations we offer at MPHS. She has been a member of Cheerleading, Student Council, Spanish Club, and Drama Club for 4 years. She has been a member of the Softball team, Yearbook Committee, NHS, and prom Committee for 2 years. She has been a member of FCCLA for 3 years, and has been a member of Science Olympiad for 1 year.

Faith has earned multiple awards and accomplishments. She was the 2017 winner of the Memorial Day Essay Contest and got the 2017 Cheerleading Spirit Award. Her freshman year she was named Spanish 1 student of the year and World Geography student of the year. She has spent 7 semesters on the Honor Roll and received the Junior Women’s Club International Study Scholarship.

Faith plans to attend Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville to major in Nursing.

The Senior-of-the-Month program is sponsored by Johnson True Value Hardware and Conaway Handyman Service. Monthly award winners receive a $100 award paid to the college they plan to attend. They are also in the running for the $500 Senior-of-the-Year award sponsored by Illinois National Bank.
