He determined to show others how thrilling it was “to ride the waves.” He began to take pictures of surfers while serving in the U.S. Navy in Hawaii. He then filmed a documentary that was released in 1966. In this movie Brown followed two surfers, Mike Hynson and Robert August, on a surfing trip around the world. They surfed the coasts of Australia, New Zealand, Tahi, Hawaii, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. He introduced locals to the sport and Americans to new surf spots around the world. BACK TO SCHOOL So much for an idea. In the world in which we live, the month of August is the last month of the summer. When the month of August is over, summer will be ended. During this month our students will go “Back to School.” Here at South Main we always mark this me in two ways. First, we present Bibles to all of our first graders. We will do that in the 10:45 service on August 20. Also on that same Sunday we will have a special prayer of appreciaon and dedicaon for all of our members and regular aenders who have been called to serve in the arena of educaon. We will honor our educators, class room teachers, administrators, School Board members, and all those who serve in the auxiliary support systems for our school systems. THE ENDLESS SUMMER Bruce Brown grew up in California and started surfing in the early 1950s. He determined to show others how thrilling it was “to ride the waves.” He began to take

pictures of surfers while serving in the U.S. Navy in Hawaii. He then filmed a documentary that was released in 1966. In this movie Brown followed two surfers, Mike Hynson and Robert August, on a surfing trip around the world. They surfed the coasts of Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. He introduced locals to the sport and Americans to new surf spots around the world. The title of his film, “The Endless Summer,” was taken from the idea expressed at both the beginning and the end of the film: If one had enough time and money, it would be possible to follow summer around the world making the summer endless.

BACK TO SCHOOL So much for an idea. In the world in which we live, the month of August is the last month of the summer. When the month of August is over, summer will be ended. During this month our students will go “Back to School.” Here at South Main we always mark this time in two ways. First, we present Bibles to all of our first graders. We will do that in the 10:45 service on August 20. Also on that same Sunday we will have a special prayer of appreciation and dedication for all of our members and regular attenders who have been called to serve in the arena of education. We will honor our educators, class room teachers, administrators, School Board members, and all those who serve in the auxiliary support systems for our school systems.

CONCLUSION OF DEACON SELECTION PROCESS As summer comes to an end, we will be finishing up or concluding the process of Deacon selection in which we have been engaged since April. A group of sixteen deacons have been working with me through the summer giving prayerful reflection and consideration of the persons whom the congregation nominated. We have concluded our work that is the basis of the formal recommendation that will be brought. The process going forward will be as follows:

August 13 Presentation of Recommendation to the Deacon Group August 27 Deacon Recommendation to the Church October 1 Deacon Ordination Service for the newly elected Deacons

I am excited about the new strength that these persons will add to our current Deacon Group and the many ministries in which they are involved.

Dr. Ron Lyles

Our Student Ministry has been wonderfully blessed

this Summer! We experienced a safe, meaningful, missions driven effort with our BOUNCE mission trip in Baton Rouge, Louisiana! Our students learned through hard work and dedication that helping others in need is not only what God commands us to do, but is in fact a tremendous blessing to themselves! I’d like to thank Braden Cain, and all of the adults for their great job in leading our students on this mission trip!

XFUGE Youth Camp in Glorieta, New Mexico, was a great experience for our students and adults alike! It was a wonderful time of worship, fellowship, recreation, and growing relationships with God – all in the midst of the Lord’s beautiful creation! Each day brought something new for all to see and experience, and our Student Ministry as a whole received blessing upon blessing! I am so thankful for the incredible team of Adult volunteers who attended and assisted me for this camp experience. Wow Week is next, so continue to pray for great things in our SMBC Student Ministry!

Texas Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief Day: We had a great day at South Main with the TBM Disaster Relief volunteers as our guests. TBM trains volunteers each year and coordinates efforts to provide prompt assistance and emergency support during times of disaster. Texas Baptists have been involved in disaster relief in Texas and around the world since 1967.

Training at South Main will be Friday and Saturday, August 4 & 5. You must attend training to be involved. There is a makeup training day at FBC Friendswood on September 8. To register, please go to the website www.TexasBaptistMen.org. Click on the following links on the page: Ministries > DR Training Calendar > then either go to August 4 or September 8. Click on the date and complete the form. You can also go to our web page for the link.

#knotdating2K17 - The fourth winner of the monthly drawing received a gift basket to Freddy’s. Congratulations Bobby and Debbie McCann. The deadline for the fourth drawing is Sunday, August 6. You still have time to get your cards turned in.

STAFF HIGHLIGHT

High energy. Laugh multiplier. Speaker of truth. Serious heart for lost souls. Detector. Illusionist. These are a few things that come to mind when I think of Brian Sadler, our Student Minister of two years. On November 27, 1977, Brian felt the Holy Spirit moving in his heart. His older brother, who was already a Christian, explained salvation through Christ. Together that day, in his brother’s bedroom, they prayed and Brian accepted Christ. He was 10 years old.

One of his favorite scriptures is, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10 Recently I asked Brian a few questions and I am sharing his responses to help you get to know him better. If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why? Cheetah – because they are

amazing animals. They are absolutely beautiful and are the fastest land mammal of God’s creation, clocking speeds exceeding 70 mph!

How many siblings do you have? One older brother, Chris What’s your choice of birthday cake? Chocolate with REAL white icing! What’s your all-time favorite movie? ROCKY (Won Academy Award for Best Picture in 1976) What do you work toward in your free time? Becoming the best acoustic guitarist, I can be. I am an avid

acoustic guitarist and have been playing for 27 years, but there is ALWAYS room for improvement. What else do you like to do in your free time? Treasure hunting, golfing, or fishing! What’s the most interesting thing about you? I am an avid illusionist, and enjoy both building and

performing illusions – including some of Houdini’s greatest! You will never catch me eating watermelon! Ugh! I am actually allergic to it and become ill! What makes you smile? Thinking of my dad. Kelley Trimble
