THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

For a brief moment, what seems to be no more than another crying baby of a poor family “appears” for who He really is: King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The gifts he is given (prophesied in Isaiah 60:6) tell the story: gold fit for a king, incense for the worship of God, and myrrh, bitter yet precious, for the hero who will lay down his life for his people. These impressive visitors are Gentiles, not Jews. From the very beginning of his human existence Jesus is clearly not just the Jewish messiah who has come to deliver the people of Israel from foreign oppression. Rather, he is the universal king, the ruler of all, who has come to tear down the walls that divide Jew from Gentile, and nation from nation. Here is what the word “Catholic” means. The Church that Christ founded is universal, spread over the whole world, welcoming the whole human race into one nation, one family, under one King. How are YOU welcoming others into the family?

+ The three kings bring gifts to the newborn king. How can you bring your best to Jesus?

For nearly half a century, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week, which is an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the circumstances that migrants face, including immigrants, refugees, children, victims, and survivors of human trafficking. Each of our families has their own migration history, some recent and some from the distant past. Regardless of where we are or where we come from, we remain part of the human family and are called to live in solidarity with one another. Unfortunately, in our current culture, many times we do not see immigrants as people, and rather we see them as strangers, if we do. We do not take the time to know them in a significant way, as children of God, and we remain suspicious of them, or we are afraid of them. During this National Migration Week, let us all take the opportunity to reach out to migrants as a community, neighbors and friends.

Farewell and God bless you, Deacon Kyle as you continue your studies in seminary. The prayers of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish go with you as you prepare for ordination to the priesthood in May. You are a gifted teacher and we are thankful for the opportunity to walk alongside you on your journey. May the peace of Christ dwell in you richly.

Por casi medio siglo, la Iglesia católica en los Estados Unidos ha celebrado la Semana Nacional de la Migración, que es una oportunidad para que la Iglesia reflexione sobre las circunstancias que los migrantes enfrentan, incluyendo los inmigrantes, los refugiados, niños, víctimas y sobrevivientes del tráfico humano. Cada una de nuestras familias tiene su propia historia de migración, algunas recientes y otras del pasado lejano. Sin importar dónde nos encontramos o de dónde venimos, seguimos siendo parte de la familia humana y somos llamados a vivir en solidaridad unos con otros. Lamentablemente, en nuestra cultura

actual muchas veces no vemos los inmigrantes como personas, y más bien los miramos como desconocidos, si es que los miramos. No tomamos el tiempo para conocerlos de una manera significante, como hijos también de Dios, y nos quedamos sospechosos de ellos, o les tenemos miedo. Durante esta Semana Nacional de la Migración, tomemos todos la oportunidad de acercarnos a los migrantes como comunidad, vecinos y amigos.
