The Archives Theyear2020willberememberedasthe“YearofCovid”–ayearinwhichourlivesweredisrupted,weshelteredinplace,worshipservicesweresuspended,andshutteredofficesabounded.OurDiocesanofficeswereclosedfromMarchuntilJune15,andmostofthestaffwereabletoworkfromhome,viathemiracleoftheInternet,Zoomandremoteofficecapabilities.

However,sincetheArchivescouldnotbetransported,thosemonthswereslowforthisoffice.Ofcourse,therewerenoresearchers,andquestionswereatastandstill.Beforeandaftertheshutdown,theArchivescarriedonasnormal.Emailsreceivedwereonaparwiththeyearbefore,aswerestaffrequestsforinformation.Thenumberofresearchersandphonecallswasnearlyhalfthenumberreceivedin2019.EvenwiththeclosureoftheArchivesandthestate-wideshutdown,nearly300requestsforinformationwerepersonallyanswered.Icontinuedtowriteabi-weekly“FromtheArchives”articleforthediocesanE-News.OneseriesfocusedonthetraditionallyAfricanAmericanparishesthroughoutthediocese,andanotherontheresponsesofseveralbishopstothequestionsofrace,inclusionandCivilRights.Therewerearticlesabouttheflupandemicof1918,anditsrelationshiptotheCovidpandemicof2019-2020,andthediocesanresponsetotheFirstWorldWar.FollowingthepassageofaresolutionatDiocesanConventiontoallocate$1,000,000.00towardreparations,Iwroteanarticletracingthehistoryofthediocese’scommitmenttothetopicofTruthandReconciliation. RossHerman,arecentgraduateofTowsonUniversity,beganvolunteeringintheArchivesinJuneof2020,takingonthetaskoftranscribingandaccessioningsomeofthethousandsofretrievedstolenlettersbelongingtothediocese.AnexhibitaboutthehistoryoftheCathedralwasmountedinthePeabodyRoomoftheDiocesanCenter. Asalways,theGarnerRanneyArchivesdependsuponthegenerosityofitspatronsforitscontinuedexistence.DonationsmaybemadeviatheBishop’sAnnualMinistriesAppealorsenttotheArchives.OnehundredpercentofthedonationgoesdirectlyintotheArchivesFundandisusedsolelybytheArchives.WiththerenewedinterestinparishesresearchingtheirownhistoryinrelationshiptoslaveryandJimCrowlaws,theArchivesisrecognizedasastartingpointforseriouslydiggingintothepastinthepursuitoftruth.Ourhistoryisimportanttoourfuture.

Weapprovedhousingallowancesfor2021forclergyemployeesoftheDiocesanCenter.

Wearecontinuingtostudyclergycompensation,analyzingitbygender,race,andcongregationalsize.Additionally,wearecontinuingouranalysisofhowclergycompensationintheDioceseofMarylandcomparestosuchcompensationindiocesescomparabletoMarylandthroughdiocesandynamics/sizeorlocation.

Development Likeeveryoneelseinthedioceseandinourcongregations,2020compelledustorethinkthewaysweconnectwithoneanother.WhentheCOVID-19pandemicbegan,manyofourprocessesandtheprogramswesupportthroughtheBishop’sAnnualMinistriesAppealweredisruptedand/orpostponedduetohealthandsafetyconcerns.Nevertheless,justassomanyothersadaptedtheirprocedurestofitthecircumstancesofthepandemic,wewatchedourmanydiocesanministriesadapttofilltheneedscreatedbyCOVID-19.

InourLatinxministry,theRev.MargaritaSantanaandtheRev.LewBradfordbeganafooddrive,providingfoodtohundredsofindividualsinneedeveryweek.OurSuttonScholarsprogramwentvirtuallastyearandprovidedacademictutoringtohighschoolstudentsinadditiontothecoreprogramcurriculum.Ourreadingcampshostedsociallydistantbookgiveaways.Wehavebeensoproudtowatchourministriesadaptandgrow,andweareespeciallygratefulfortheslowreturntohybridandin-personactivities.

Despitethepandemic,weraised$191,000fortheBishop’sAppeallastyearand$173,000fortheSuttonScholarsHighSchoolEnrichmentProgram.Inayearwhereeconomicinstabilityledtochallengesinfundraisingacrossthenation,wearegratefulforthecommitmentofyou,ourdonors,tokeeptheseprogramsafloat,especiallygiventheimpacttheyhadonmanycommunitiesinneedduringthepandemic.

In2021,weshiftedthelanguageofourBishop’sAnnualMinistriesAppealtobettercapturetheindividualstoriesandtestimoniesofthepeopledirectlyinvolvedinandimpactedbyourmanymeaningfulministries.Inresponse,wehaveseenariseinengagementinourstoriesandinterestintheworkourministrieshavebeendoing,whichhasalsoledtoanincreaseingiving.Sofar,wehaveraisedover$135,000forthe2021Appeal.Additionally,wehaveraisedover$208,000separatelyforSuttonScholars,thanksinparttonewfoundationsliketheTruistFoundationfortheirsupport.Thankyou!Thankyou!Thankyou!

IntheFallof2020,wewentvirtualforourSuttonScholarsfundraiser.Initially,wehadplannedtohostanin-personeventinMayatPortCovington,Baltimore,butCOVID-19eliminatedthatpossibility.Instead,wegotcreativeandranalivestreamedfundraiserthroughYouTube,whereweraisedagenerous$42,000fortheSuttonScholarsprogram.

ThisyearhasbeenbookendedbygreetingsandfarewellsinourDevelopmentOffice.InJanuary,wewelcomedMartinScarboroughtotheDevelopmentOfficeasourDevelopmentAssociate,replacingClaireScarborough,ourDevelopmentAssistant.TheRev.CharlesCloughencontinuestoofferhisconsultationonPlannedGivingthroughourtaskforceandasneeded.TheRev.RockSchulercontinuestoprovidevaluableconsultationaswellasbeingoursuperbgrantwriter.ThisNovember,ourDevelopmentDirector,Ms.KathyGrayson,willberetiringfromherroletofocuson

herfamilyandbeginanewchapterinherlife.Wewillgreatlymissherinsight,vision,andthepassionforourdonorsthatshehasbroughttoourofficethesepastfive-plusyears.ShehasbeenresponsibleforcultivatingtheremarkableteamofdevelopmentprofessionalsinourofficeandtheadvisoryboardofourSuttonScholarsprogramaswellasthePlannedGivingTaskForce.Thelegacyofherhardworkwillliveonlongafterherdeparture.AnewDirectorofDevelopmentwillbeselectedinthecomingweeksandwillworkcloselywithKathythroughthistransition.

Sutton Scholars High School Enrichment Program The2021SuttonScholarsHighSchoolEnrichmentProgrambeganitsseventhyearofoperationinthesamewaythe2020programended…virtually.Tomaintainconnectionswithourscholarsduringthepandemic,webeganbi-monthlyvirtualmeetingswithmentorteamswhoengagedthescholarsinavarietyofon-linediscussions,games,andotheractivities—evenafewcookingclasses—tohelpboostthespiritsoftheyoungpeoplewhowereexperiencingalllevelsofscreenfatiguefromon-lineschooling.Movingclosertothesummerprogrammingandaspandemicrestrictionsbeganslowlyliftingandwiththeavailabilityofvaccinations,wewereabletodesignahybridprogramwhichallowedthescholarstomeetthreedaysinpersonandonedayvirtually.Despitethemanyobstaclesthepandemiccreated,ourscholarsparticipatedinafullsix-weeksummerprogramthatwasoverwhelminglysuccessful.Oneofthemostsignificantobstaclesfacedfortheprogramhasbeenrecruitmentofnewscholarswhichisdirectlyattributedtothepandemicandtheinabilitytomeetwithschoolcounselors,principalsandstudents.In2020,nonewscholarswererecruitedwhichresultedinacohortgap;in2021therewillbeincreasedfocusonrecruitmentofboth9thand10thgradersinordertocompensateforthelossesexperiencedin2020.Effortstoexpandscholarrecruitmentwillbeoneoftheprimarygoalsduringtheupcomingyear.Despitethemanyobstaclesthepandemiccreated,SuttonScholarshadaveryproductivesummerprogram.Asinpastyears,thescholarsfocusweeklyonthesethemes:communicationskills,leadershipskills,toolsforsuccess,financialliteracyandbuildingabetterBaltimore.OneweekisdedicatedforthescholarstospendtimeatourClaggettCenter.Mondayswerethedesignatedvirtualprogramdaywhenscholarswereengagedinmotivationaltalks,cohortmeetings,groupreflectionsandend-of-sessionjournalingtime.TuesdaythroughThursdaywerein-personsessionsatMercyHighSchoolwherethescholarsengagedininteractiveenrichmentactivities.WeeklyguestspeakersincludedthepresidentofSt.Mary’sCollege,Dr.TujuandaJordan;aW.E.B.DuBoisGriotstoryteller;acertifiedpublicaccountant;twoMarylandlegislators:statesenatorAntonioHayesandstatedelegateMarlonAmpry;retiredBaltimoreCitypolicechiefMelvinRussell;andothertheme-relatedspeakers.Aswell,forthefirsttime,GuardianBaltimore/TheMovingHistoryDancecompanyengagedourscholarsinaweeklydanceprogramthatfocusedonteachingAfricanAmericanhistorythroughthelensofjazzandswingdanceroutines.Theworkofthedancecompanyprovidedthescholarswithadifferentopportunitytobuildconfidenceandleadershipskills.Theirhardworkresultedinawonderfuldanceroutineattheclosingprogram.

InpreviousyearstheSuttonScholarsprogramhaspartneredwithYouthWorksBaltimoreinorderforourscholarstoearncriticalincomeinsupportoftheirfamilies.Onceagain,pandemicrestrictionsandnewchanges/criteriatotheYouthWorksprogrammingmadeitimpossibletocontinuethepartnership.Instead,withapprovalfromtheSuttonScholarsAdvisoryBoardandcriticalsupportfromtheStandingCommitteeandfundingfromDiocesanCouncil,allourscholarswereabletoreceiveastipend.Withoutthesestipends,manyofourscholarswouldnotbeabletoparticipatefullyinthesummerprogramming.Thecosttounderwritethesestipendsissignificantbutacriticalandimportantaspectofbeingabletoengagethescholarsinwork-readinessandjob-skilltrainingactivitiesdesignedandincorporatedwithinthesummerprogramcurriculum.Thissummer,thetimeatClaggettwascrucialforourscholarsafterayearandahalfofisolationandsocialdistancing.Forthefirsttime,thescholarsspentafullweekatClaggettandthefocusduringthistimewassimplytohaveFUN.Andfuntheyhadwhileengagedinavarietyofteambuildinganduniquelearningexperiencesthatincludedtheropescourse,kayaking,swimming,biking,artsandcrafts,andmanymorecampexperiences.ItwasbyfarthebesttimeourscholarsexperiencedatClaggett.Duringthisyear’sclosingprogram,thescholarswerehonoredtowelcomeactorHillHarperasthekeynotespeakerwhowasdynamicandengagedthescholarsactivelyduringhispresentation.SpecialthankstoRev.NevaBrown,directorofcommunityengagementandrecruitment;Ms.AngelaWhitehead,administrativeprogramcoordinator;andMr.AdamBarner,associatefortrainingsandbenefits.Aheartfeltthankstoallofourmentorswhoselflesslygiveoftheirtimetoourscholarsonamonthlybasisandforallofourinstructors,instructoraides,andothervolunteerswhomakeourprogrammingsuccessful.

EpiscopalDioceseFund

1. InMarch2020,thepresidentoftheUnitedStatesdeclaredanationalemergencyduetotheCovid-19pandemic.Thepandemichadfar-reachingsocial,economicandfinancialimplicationsfortheentireworld.Thepandemiccontinuesandatthistime,thelong-termeffectontheoperationandfinancialstatusoftheDiocesecannotbedetermined.

2. InApril2020,theDiocesereceivedaloanintheamountof$518,000underthePaycheckProtectionProgram(PPP)ofwhich$352,000wasallocatedtotheDioceseand$165,000was

allocatedtotheClaggettCenter.Theproceedsareincludedinrevenuesfor2020sincetheloanhasbeenforgivenanddoesnotneedtoberepaid.

3. AsshownbelowtheEpiscopalDioceseFundendedtheyear2020withrevenueonacashbasisof$4,858,000comparedto$4,696,000for2020.

4. Thecongregationalallocationswerelowerin2020ascomparedto2019duetothepandemic.Miscellaneousrevenuesarehigherin2020ascomparedto2019becauseofthe$352,000PPPloanproceedswhichwereforgiven.

RESOLVED,thatthe236thConventionoftheDioceseofMaryland,meetingvirtuallySeptember12,2020,duetothenovelcoronavirusthatcausesCOVID-19,suspendtheRulesofOrderandadoptthetemporarilymodifiedrulesasoutlinedbelow.

ModifiedRulesofOrder

1.ThedailysessionsoftheConventionshallbeopenedwithDivineService,orappointedprayersatsuchhoursasmaybeappointedbythebishopandtheCommitteeonArrangementsforeachConvention.

2.TheConvention,uponitsfirstassembling,shallbecalledtoorderbythebishop,oriftherebenobishop,or if thebishopbeabsent,bythepresidentof theStandingCommitteeorbysomememberof thatbodyappointedbythoseofitsmemberswhomaybepresent.

3. When the president takes the chair everymember shall be seated and remain uncovered until themembersshallhavelefttheConvention.

4. EachmemberoftheclergyentitledtoaseatintheConventionshallregisterbycheckinginremotelyusingapproveddigitaltechnology,andthenameshallbecheckedagainstarolefurnishedbythebishoporotherecclesiasticalauthorityofthediocese,whichroleshallbeevidenceoftherightofthemembersoftheclergytoseatsuntiltheConventionshallhaveformallyactedonthequestion.

EachLaydelegateshallalsoregisterbychecking inremotelyusingapproveddigital technology,andthenameshallbecheckedagainstarolepreparedfromthecertificatesreceivedfromvestries.TheLaydelegateswhosecertificateshavenotyetbeenforwardedtothesecretarynotbeeligibletobeseated.IfbymeansofsuchregistrationaquorumofbothOrdersappear,thepresidingofficershallannouncethefact,anddeclaretheConventionisorganizedandreadyforbusiness:

Eachmemberoftheclergyandlaydelegateshallfurthermorebeconsidered“present”withseat,voiceandvoteuntilthebishopconcludesconvention.Providedthatwheneverit isnecessarytocalltheroleoftheClergyandLaydelegatesthesurnameonlyshallbecalledexceptwheretheremaybetwoormoreofthesamename,inwhichcasetheyshallbedesignatedbytheadditionoftheirChristiannames.

5. In case of the absence of the bishop, or of a vacancy in the Episcopate, the person who called theConventiontoordershallannouncethatthereisaquorumpresent.TheConventionshallthenproceedtoelectapresidentaccordingtotheSeventhArticleoftheConstitution;whoshall,sosoonastheelectioniscompleted,takethechairanddeclarethattheConventionisorganizedandreadyforbusiness.

6.Thefirstbusinessafterthedeclarationismade,eitherbythebishoporthepresident,shallbetheelectionofaSecretaryandanAssistantSecretary.TheChairshallthenappointtheCommitteesmentionedintheOrderofBusiness.TheChairshallalsoappointallothercommitteesfortheappointmentofwhichnootherprovisionismade,unlessotherwiseorderedbytheConvention.

Votesmaybecastinadvanceofconventionthroughelectronicregistration,butthoseresultsmustberatifiedafterconventioniscalledtoorder.Votesonresolutionsmaybecastinadvance.Anaffirmativevoteofatleastthree-fourthsofeligiblemembersshallberatifiedas“passed”withoutdebate.

7.Whenanymemberisabouttospeakordeliveranymattertotheconvention,themembershallgaintheattentionofthepresidentinthesubscribedmanner,andwithduerespect,addressthepresident.

8.Iftwoormoremembersshallariseatthesametimetospeak,thepresidentshalldecidewhoshallspeak.

9.Nomembershallspeakmorethantwiceinthesamedebate,norlongerthanfiveminutesatonetime,withoutleaveoftheConvention.

At theconclusionofanyspeech, thepresidentalone,oranymemberof theConvention, if themember’smotionissupportedbyatleastfourseconds,maycallforavotewithoutdebateonaproposalforarecessofConventionsothatthemembersmayinformallyconferanddiscusstheissuesofthedebate.Ifpassedbyatwo-thirdsmajorityofthosepresentandvoting,themembersoftheConventionwillformsmallgroupsfortenminutesattheendofwhichdebatewillresume.

10.Nomotionshallbedebateduntilthesamebeseconded,and,ifdesiredbyanymember,reducedtowritingandreadbytheSecretary.

11.Whenamotionismadeandseconded,noothermotionshallbereceived,excepttoadjourn,tolayonthetable,topostponetoacertaintime,topostponeindefinitely,tocommitortoamend;andmotionsforanyofthese purposes shall have precedence in the order herein named. If a motion to lay on the table anamendmentbecarried,thematterbeforetheConventionshallbeproceededwithasifnosuchamendmenthadbeenoffered.Themotionstolayonthetableandtoadjournshallbedecidedwithoutdebate.Themotiontoadjournshallalwaysbeinorder,ifthemoverhasthefloor.

12.Whenaproposedamendmentisunderconsideration,amotiontoamendthesamemaybemade.Noother amendments shall be in order, but a substitute for both amendmentsmay be received, which, ifadopted,shalloperateasanamendmenttotheoriginalproposition.Nopropositiononasubjectdifferentfromtheoneunderconsiderationshallbereceivedundercolorofanamendmentorsubstitute.

13. If a question contains several distinct propositions, the same shall be divided at the request of anymember,andavotetakenseparately,exceptthatamotiontostrikeoutandinsertshallbeindivisible.

14.Allquestionsofordershallbedecidedbythepresident,withoutdebate;butanymembermayappealfromsuchdecisions,andonsuchappealnomembershallspeakmorethanonce,withoutexpressleaveoftheConvention.

15.Whenanymemberrisestoapointoforder,thememberwhohasthefloorshallbeseateduntilthepointoforderisdecidedbytheChair.

16.Aquestionbeingoncedetermined,shallstandasthejudgmentoftheConvention,andshallnotbeagaindrawnintodebateduringthesession,exceptwiththeconsentoftwo-thirdsoftheConvention,uponamotiontoreconsidermadebyamemberwhovotedwiththemajorityandsecondedbyamemberwhoalsovotedwiththemajority.

17.Noquestionsshallbetakenonanyreportunlessuponamotiontoprintorrecommitit;butreportsshall,asofcourse,lieuponthetable.IfacommitteedeemanyactionoftheConventiondesirable,itshallbeitsdutytopresentinwritingsuchresolutions,acts,orcanons,asitmaythinkitshouldadoptwhichonlyshallbesubjecttotheactionoftheConvention.Everyactwhichdividesaparish,or inanywayaffectsparishboundaries,shalldistinctlysetoutthenewboundarieswhichitisintendedtoestablish.TheConventionwillnotactuponanyproposedresolution,act,orcanonwhichdoesnotconformtotheprovisionsofthisrule.

18.Allelectionsshallbebyballotunlessotherwiseordered;thevotesoftheClergyandLaityshallbecountedseparately,butthevoteshallberegardedasajointone,andtheelectionshallbedecidedbyamajorityofthewholenumberofvotestakentogether,exceptwhereavotebyordersshallberequiredundertheprovisionsof theConstitution. Nominations fromthe floorshallnotbeallowable.AfteropportunityaccordingtotheOrderofBusinesshasbeengiventonominationforanyelection,ifthereshallbenogreaternumberofnomineesthanthereareplacestobefilledintheelection,onmotionunanimouslyadopted,thesecretary or some other person designated in the motion may be instructed to cast the ballot of theConventionforthepersonorpersonssonominated,andsuchpersonorpersonsonaballotsocastshallbedulyelected.

If after nominations are made, an election by ballot of the members of the Convention is required todetermineachoice,theelectionshallbepostponed,unlessotherwiseordered,untilsuchhourasmaybeappointedfortheelectionintheOrderofBusiness,andthesecretaryshall,beforethehourappointedforsuch election, have prepared for the use of themembers in voting official ballots containing names ofnominees.Ballotsmaybeprintedorprovidedthroughsecureduseofelectronicdevices.

19.ThepresidentshallappointachieftellerandsuchadditionaltellersasarerequiredfromtheClericalOrderorfromcommunicantsingoodstandingasdefinedinCanon2170,andneitherthechieftellernorsuchadditional tellers need be delegates to the Convention. After the clerical and lay votes shall have beencountedbytherespectivetellers,thetellerfirstnamedbytheChairshallcombinetheminonejointballot,whichthetellershallpresenttotheConvention,readingoutthenamesofthepersonsvotedfor,thenumberofclericalandlayvotesforeachseparately,andthesumtotalofvotesreceivedbyeachperson.TheChairshallthenstatetotheConventiontheresultofthejointballot.Ifafterthefirstballotallvacancieshavenotbeenfilled,amotionmay,thenorafteranysucceedingballot,beentertainedfortheunanimouselectiontothevacancyorvacanciesstillexistingineachorderthenomineeornomineesofthatorderwhohavereceivedthehighestnumberofvotes,butlessthanamajority,ontheprecedingballotandthesameshallbedeclareddulyelected.Ifalternatesarenecessary,then,amotionmaythenbeentertainedfortheunanimouselectionasalternatesineachordersuchnumberofthosenomineesineachorderhavingthenexthighestnumberofvotesonthelastfullballotandthesameshallthereuponbedeclareddulyelected.

20. The Bishop’s Annual Address shall be given at such time as may be designated by the bishop, theCommitteeonArrangements,andthedispatcherofbusiness.

21. Resolutions shall be brought to the floor of the convention in the order in which the ResolutionsCommitteedeemsexpedienttothebusinessofconvention.Noresolutiontoreceive,acknowledge,affirmorreaffirmanactofapreviousGeneralConventionorconventionoftheDioceseofMarylandwillbebroughtforthforconsideration.

22.Amajorityoftwo-thirdsofthemembersshallberequiredtosuspendanyRuleofOrderorshallmakeanychangeintheOrderofBusiness;but“OrdersoftheDay”maybeintercalatedintheOrderofBusinessbyamajorityvote.

23.“Robert’sRulesofOrder”shallbetheparliamentaryguidesinallcasesnotprovidedforintheforegoingrules.

Becauseofthepandemicwereallyarelamentingandwalking“throughthevalleyoftheshadowofdeath”(Psalm23),butwearen’tstayingthere!Webelievethatlightovercomesthedarkness,loveovercomeshatredandracismandviolence,faithovercomesfear,lifeovercomesdeath,andthepastwillnotshackleusfromlivingandthrivinginthepresent“now”.Wewillnotonlygetthroughthisatsomepoint,wearegettingthroughthis,rightnow.Whataboutthefuture?Well,Iamnotgoingtopaintarosypictureforyouaboutwhat’sgoingtohappen.Theroadbeforeusisnotgoingtobeeasy.Therewillbesuccessesaheadaswellasmanyfailures.Someofourchurcheswillnotmakeitinthetransitionfromthepasttothepresent,andonintothefuture.Togetbacktotheearlierquote:Iwillnotmakepredictions;Iwillnot“makeupstoriesaboutthefuture.”(Beenthere,donethat.) ButIcanhope.Icandream.Icanenvisionafuturethatisnotyet,butyettocome.Whatareyourhopesanddreamsforyourcongregation?Don’tlosethosedreams...workforthem!Dothehardworknecessaryforyourdreamstocometrue.Ineachofourcongregationsthereissomeheavyliftingthatneedstobedone.You’regoingtohavetoputyourbacksintoit,mypeople;thesearecriticaltimes.AsCanonScottSlaterstatedatourlast(almost)biweeklyclergyandwardenszoommeeting:weencourageallclergyandlayleaderstodoonenewadaptivepracticeinthenext90daysforyourchurchcongregation.Itdoesn’thavetobebig;itdoesn’thavetochangetheuniverse.Itcouldbestartinganewbiblestudy,anewworshipserviceorliturgicalpractice,anewpastoralcareteam,oranewneighborhoodinitiative.Iknowit’shardrightnowtothinkofdoinganythingelsewhenperhapsyou’retiredandfatiguedeithermentallyorphysically.Butdon’tgiveupnow.Youwillfindthatyouronesmallneweffortwillenergizeyouandyourcommunity–notdepleteit.Church,wehavebeenherebefore.TheChurchofJesusChristforthepast2,000yearshasgonethroughmanypersecutions,famines,plagues,wars,depressions,financialruin,andcountlesssetbacksineveryage.TheDioceseofMarylandwentthroughafewyearsofnotbeingabletofullyfunctionasaworshipingcommunityduringthedevastatingGreatInfluenzapandemicof1918-1919,whichkilledsomewherebetween20and40millionpeople.Ithasbeencitedasthemost

devastatingepidemicinrecordedworldhistory.We,asaChurchsurvivedthat,andwewillsurvivethisone.GodhasnotleftusnowanymorethanGodwouldabandonGod’speopleinanyage.

13Singforjoy,Oheavens,andexult,Oearth;breakforth,Omountains,intosinging!FortheLORDhascomfortedhispeople,andwillhavecompassiononhissufferingones.14ButZionsaid,“TheLORDhasforsakenme,myLordhasforgottenme.”15Canawomanforgethernursingchild,orshownocompassionforthechildofherwomb?Eventhesemayforget,yetIwillnotforgetyou.16Behold,Ihaveinscribedyouonthepalmsofmyhands;yourwallsarecontinuallybeforeme.

(Isaiah49:13-16) Insummary,myfriends,inthisannual“stateofthechurch”addressthatthebishopistogiveeveryyear,IwantyoutoknowthattheEpiscopalDioceseofMarylandisaliveandwell.Allbutafewofourcongregationshavefiguredoutsomewaytoofferworshipeitheronlineoroutsideinperson,orboth.Ourdiocesancommitteesaremeetingandfunctioningwellgiventhecircumstances.Ourstaffisworkingveryhardtohelpyoumaintainyourministries.Inshort,theHolySpirithasequippedallofusinthediocesewitheverythingweneedrightnowtobetheChurch.Wemaypreferthingstobedifferent;wemaywantmorepeopleandmoreworshipservicesandpeopleandtechnologyandmoney,butthereisnothingwelack.Whatyouareseeingtoday,inthisfirst-everonlineZoomdiocesanconvention,isREALCHURCH. Allowmenowtotakeamomenttosaywhatapleasureitistosharemyepiscopalministrywithmypredecessor,BobIhloff+,asmyassistingbishop.Thiswasnottheplan,asyoucanimagine,whenIputoutasearchforanassistantbishopwhomightfitinwellhere,atleastforafewyears.ButwhenBishopBobandIstartedtalkingaboutit,andheofferedtohelpinanyway,alightbulbwentoff!Whynothim?TheStandingCommitteeagreed,andsosinceJanuaryofthisyearthethirteenthbishopofMarylandandthefourteenthbishopofMarylandhavebecomeagoodteam,andweenjoyworkingtogether.Iliketothinkthatifyouhaveanyquestionsatall,betweenthetwoofusyou’llgetonegoodanswer!Thankyou,BishopBob!Andthankyoutoallthosewhoputthemselvesforwardasnomineestoourvariousdiocesanofficesandcommitteesanddidnotwin.Weareallgratefulforyourhumility,courage,andvulnerabilityinofferingyourservicetoGodandtheChurch.Andaheartycongratulationsandgratitudeforthosewhoranandwon.Allofyoucandidatesmayfindthatthosewhowonmaysometimesfeelliketheygottheshortstraw,andthosewholosttheirelectionsmayendupwithwidersmilesthanthosewhowon.Butournotionsofwinningandlosingareonlyfromourfinitehumanpointofview.WhatreallymattersisthatwetrusttheHolySpirittohelpusfindwhatwearesupposedtobedoingintheChurchatthistime.WeareallcalledtofollowandserveChristinsomeway,andwejusthavetostumbleintoit.
